The move is likely to have an impact on the long awaited appointment of permanent principals.

In a major blow to Delhi University (DU), deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia has decided to discontinue financial aid to 28 colleges, including prominent ones such as Gargi College, Kamala Nehru College, Sukhdev College of Business Studies, Shaheed Rajguru College, Maharaja Agrasen College and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College.

Citing unchecked corruption breeding in the university by not forming governing bodies in the 28 fully and partially funded colleges, Sisodia tweeted the guideline and said, "Have ordered finance department to stop funding for Delhi government funded 28 Delhi University colleges, as DU is not willing to form governing bodies for last 10 months."

"I cannot allow unchecked corruption and irregularities to be sustained on Delhi government funds in the name of education," Sisodia tweeted, sending the varsity officials in a panic.

Calling the move political, DU dean of colleges Devesh Sinha said, "The university has been following guidelines to formulate the governing bodies with due caution. The governing bodies are scrutinised thoroughly by our executive council by including representatives from all cited fields like education, law, media and sports."

He added that the university has assured the Delhi government by writing to them and ensuring that governing bodies in the government-run colleges will be constituted by August.

The move is likely to have an impact on the long awaited appointment of permanent principals and faculty members. Currently, due to the absence of governing bodies, nearly 26 colleges of the varsity are being run by officiating or "acting principals".

The government funds 28 colleges of DU, out of which 12 are fully funded and include Maharaja Agrasen College, Sukhdev College of Business Studies, Shaheed Rajguru College, Maharaja Agrasen College and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College.

The government also partially funds 16 colleges by providing 5 per cent of the financial aid, which includes Gargi College, Kamala Nehru College, Institute of Home Economics, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College (morning and evening) and Sri Aurobindo College (morning and evening).
