Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County

NLSLA operates ten Self-Help Legal Access Centers across Los Angeles Countythe largest network of self-help centers in California. Piloted by Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, the NLSLA Centers have helped close to a million people access the courts during the past decade. The Centers are staffed by NLSLA advocates, legal services partners staff, dedicated volunteers, and Justice Corps students.

The Centers provide guidance to litigants:

Self-Help Centers are located at Courthouses in Antelope Valley, Compton, Inglewood, Long Beach, Pasadena, Pomona, San Fernando, Santa Monica, Torrance, and Van Nuys.

Through no fault of their own, purely for financial reasons, too many members of our community have found themselves locked out of our civil justice system when they most need help with family law matters, health and housing problems, and consumer, small-business or employment disputes. For these residents, Neighborhood Legal Services and the Self-Help Legal Access Centers they operate are the key to the courthouse door, and Im very proud of what theyve been able to accomplish over the past 15 years.

Zev Yaroslavsky, Los Angeles County Supervisor

Funded by the County of Los Angeles and the State Bar of California Legal Services Trust Fund.

Client Story: Self-Help Center Empowers Grandmother in Custody Case

When Louise Reaves daughter could no longer take care of her own young child, Louise knew she could give the three-year-old girl a stable, loving home. But she soon found herself unable to navigate a time-consuming, financially debilitating custody case.

I was going through a hard time emotionally, financially, she said. I just didnt know what to do.

Thats when Louise remembered hearing about a place at the Van Nuys Courthouse that helps litigants through the often-overwhelming process of family law matters. At the center, Louise worked with a Neighborhood Legal Services attorney who helped her get a guardianship. Now, her granddaughter is thriving in a safe, healthy environment.

It was like an angel that just dropped out of the sky, Louise said. God sent me an angel to get through this. And now everything is ok. Its a good feeling to know that there is help.
