How to build and keep your team motivated during uncertain times – ITProPortal

Posted: at 9:50 am

The environmental and economic challenges of 2020 have leaders scrambling to keep their teams focused, motivated and above all else, healthy. During disruptive times, its easy to fall into ineffective work streams by taking on too much or failing to clearly communicate objectives. Spending time and energy on tasks that fail to return positive results or growth kills motivation. Today, most teams are busier than ever, rebuilding 2020 plans -possibly more than once - or taking on more responsibility due to reduction or delay in resources. Working towards a constantly moving target makes staying motivated nearly impossible.

It may sound simple, but maintaining open and constant communication and setting smart KPIs the most effective way to keep your team on target and progressing. Even bad news communicated is better than no news communicated - and can help rally support from all levels to get back on track or pivot from an ineffective strategy. Leaders today must communicate over and above (almost to a point of annoyance), especially with limited face to face interaction that leaders previously relied on to accomplish goals.

Most leaders stabilized their strategy and their teams are producing at an appropriate level, allowing them to turn their attention back to business growth and building their teams. Like everything else this year, recruiting practices require a process shift. Lack of in-person interviews makes it more difficult to gauge a candidates personality and cultural fit within an organization - which is more important than ever. Its critical to hire candidates who can hit the ground running.

Leaders should pay just as much attention to a potential employees work ethic, values and cultural fit as they do their work experience and ability to meet the job requirements. Leaders recognize the importance of having a workforce with a shared set of values and culture. As businesses navigate through current disruption and plan for a post-Covid-19 world, they must be prepared for implications on their teams engagement. The onset of the pandemic tested many companies cultures and demonstrated that those committed to supporting a strong company culture and values prior to the crisis were more easily able to weather the storm. So how can business leaders create this level of team engagement?

Organizations must quickly adapt during crisis, accepting new ways of working, communicating and servicing clients. With a nimble workforce that is always prepared to pivot, even at the eleventh hour, companies can continue to thrive even in times of crisis. If your company lacks this agility, take the opportunity to re-evaluate your culture and examine how you can future-proof your workforce.

Dedicate yourself to developing a culture that embraces change. A good leader values growth over comfort, so inspire your team to do the same. Remember that for some employees embracing change can be a challenge. In our comfort zone we feel experienced, knowledgeable and in-charge, whereas we can be anxious and resistant during uncertain times. As a leader, realize that nothing is permanent except change. If you can do that, employees will be ready and even excited for what will come or what they might learn when the change happens.

Reward employees when they make rapid, informed decisions. These star employees are vital in fast paced industries and in times of crisis. When you reward employees for their ability to act decisively and implement plans without delay, you increase their confidence and eliminate future hesitation. That will help you create a flexible, confident, authoritative workforce which will be the cornerstone of success during difficult times. Invest in training and inspire confidence among your employees - and your workforce will respond with the business overarching goals in mind.

Encourage a team-first mentality. The feeling that everyone on the team is in this together will help your organization weather the toughest situations. We are more powerful together than we are on our own. While competition is healthy in most environments and can bring out the best in some individuals, it can be disruptive to have hyper competition within teams during difficult situations. Leaders must cultivate a team culture and hire accordingly, so the business can reap the rewards of a collaborative workforce. When employees work together to achieve a common goal, they feel a sense of ownership and pride in the team and companys shared achievements. Teamwork, efficiency, motivation and creativity also reduce employee burnout. Strong teams are able to continue producing quality work under pressure, maintain momentum and continue delivering business value.

Inspire employees to make bold, brave moves. While some employees are naturally confident and self-reliant, other employees might need more reassurance by their managers. Make it a priority to inspire employees to be more self-assured and you can increase productivity and creativity. Welcome ideas from across the workforce, from both senior and junior staff members. When employees understand that those who make calculated data driven decisions succeed faster than those who are very risk-averse, they will be more willing to share new ideas that may challenge the status quo.

Ensure that you are not hiring people who think just like you. Diversify the pool of employee backgrounds and experience to drive creativity and innovation. Building a team of employees with both deep technical expertise and critical thinking skills across various disciplines gives companies a competitive edge; a team of divergent thinkers with unique perspectives results in fresh ideas and inventive new ways to improve services or products. Invest in curating a team with diverse training and backgrounds, retain top talent and you will outpace and out-innovate organizations not following suit.

Hire people who treat clients, partners and colleagues with the respect they deserve. Be a champion for this behavior and ensure that managers and business leaders do the same. Lead by example to create an inclusive, positive work environment where employees feel valued, supported and nurtured.

Instill a culture that values talent and hard work. Ensure your employees understand they are valued for their ability to do the job well, and are not limited by their previous training. Give everyone in the workforce the opportunity to grow personally and build a career, regardless of their background and skill set. Give employees the chance to explore new skills and exceed expectations in a workplace that rewards talent, good work and a positive attitude.

Dedicated leaders who invest in company culture create united and engaged teams that enhance workforce productivity and - in turn - company growth. Keeping a sharp focus on personality, cultural fit, and diversity benefits not only your employees, but the company itself. Employees will be empowered and thrive in this environment driving creativity and innovation.

Remember, company culture is not just a checkbox it should be a shared set of values that transforms and drives the workforce and benefits the business. If you commit to strong company values now, you will create a resilient workforce that will continue to prosper through periods of blue skies and crisis.

Unlike 2016, polling this year suggests Democrats more motivated by Supreme Court than Republicans – CNN

Posted: at 9:50 am

I should point out that while it could shift in the days and weeks to come, polling initially shows that former Vice President Joe Biden's voters have been more likely to be fired up about Supreme Court selections and that voters overall trust Biden more on a Supreme Court selection. A new Marquette University Law School poll paints the landscape well. Nationally, it finds that 59% of Biden voters say that appointing the next Supreme Court justice is very important to their vote. Compare that with only 51% of Trump voters. This finding matches what we saw in a CNN/SSRS poll last month. In that poll, 78% of Biden backers told pollsters that nominating the next justice was extremely or very important to their vote. That compared with 64% of Trump supporters. (It was 47% Biden supporters and 32% Trump supporters who said it was extremely important.) Compare these numbers to what we saw heading into the 2016 election. The final CNN/ORC poll in that cycle showed that 58% of Trump supporters said that nominating the next Supreme Court justice was extremely important to their vote, while only 46% of Hillary Clinton voters said the same. In the 2016 exit poll, Trump beat Clinton by a 15 point margin among those who put Supreme Court appointments as the most important factor to their vote.

In other words, it seems, at least initially, that unlike in 2016, a Supreme Court nominating fight could be more of a motivating factor for Democrats than Republicans.

Of course, this election is going to be fought in the swing states and it's going to be fought over the few voters who are still persuadable at this stage.

Biden was more trusted to pick a nominee in the average of all three states by a 53% to 41% margin. That was actually larger than his average lead against Trump in the horserace of 50% to 41% in the three states.

But perhaps more interesting is what the New York Times found among persuadable voters (i.e. those who said they could change their mind or were not backing either Biden or Trump). They preferred Biden to pick the next nominee by a 49% to 31% margin.

And among those voters who might not vote (i.e. those who said were less than very likely to cast a ballot), Biden led Trump by a 52% to 23% margin on who would be better at picking the next Supreme Court justice.

In other words, it seems that if the Supreme Court is a motivating factor for voters in these key swing states, it'll be more likely to get voters out for Biden than Trump.

Of course, this is just a preliminary look before voters knew that there would be another Supreme Court vacancy during Trump's first term in office. There are a number of complicating factors that could shift things.

Will Biden lose his edge on the Supreme Court, if Democrats try to block that nominee? Maybe, although I'm at least somewhat skeptical of polling on this issue.

Although a majority of Democrats (61%) were for expanding the size of the Supreme Court in the Marquette poll, a majority of independents (56%) were against it.

The bottom line is there's a lot we still don't know. The days and weeks will clarify, but for now the polling indicates that the topic of filling a vacancy helps Biden not Trump.

Italians divided over whether Black mans beating death was motivated by racism – The World

Posted: at 9:50 am

Willy Monteiro Duarte was born in Rome to parents from Cape Verde. He had just become an Italian citizen, and at 21 years old, was an aspiring chef at a hotel in a town near Rome.

All of that ended on Sept. 6when he tried to break up a fight and instead was beaten to death himself.

Related:This Liberian Italian beatmaker uses music to tackle racism in Italy

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte attended Duartes funeral earlier this month, and hundreds marched in a candlelight procession to call for justice for the young Black man. Two white brothers were arrested in Duartes death and have been charged with murder, while some believe they should also be charged for committing a hate crime.

The incident has exposed a deep divide among Italians over whichcrimes should be considered racially motivated.

In this case, based on the facts that we know, we do not know, in the end.

In this case, based on the facts that we know, we do not know, in the end, said Giulia Perin, an attorney with the Italian Association for Juridical Studies on Immigration, adding that there needs to be concrete evidence of racist motivations to be considered a hate crime.

This could be done if, for instance, we know at that instant that the boys were shouting, You are Black, or something, but thats not the case.

Related:Black and South Asian communities find solidarity in fight against racism

Others say Duartes death is evidence of growing fascism in Italy, pointing to the hobbies and interests of the brothers accused of Duarte's killing. Gabriele Bianchi, 26, and Marco Bianchi, 24,were into bodybuilding and mixed martial arts. They have pleaded innocent.

Fascism in Italy has this history of the cult of the male body, of the strong body, of the strong myth of Rome that ruled the world and so on a myth of domination, said Marcello Maneri, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Milan Bicocca who studies race and power.

These people [the two brothers] acted like they owned the community," he said. They wanted to patrol their territory. In the end, I think when they saw this Black guy, they thought, We are the people who must control this territory, not him.

And thats a fascist instinct, he said.

Fascism, as it was developed and implemented and experienced here in Italy, had a very racist dimension to it.

But fascism, as it was developed and implemented and experienced here in Italy, had a very racist dimension to it, said Judith Sunderland, the Milan-based acting deputy director of Europe for Human Rights Watch. Sheargued the brothers' behavior can be fascistic and racist.

Related:Video of police beating Indigenous chief fuels ongoing anti-racism protests in Canada

Sunderland said that while Italian law enforcement requires clear-cut indications to declare an attack racially motivated, thats not how racism often works in reality.

And it's unfortunate that so much of the conversation has revolved around this insistence on, Its not racism. It was all these other things, but it absolutely wasn't racism, she said, because that means that people aren't ready for the kind of reckoning that is necessary in order to really address systemic discrimination and racism in our society.

Last week, Duartes family released a statement saying they didnt want their sons death to be used as a political tool to talk about racism or fascism. They wrote: Willy was the victim of cruelty and unjustified ferocity, which had no color or race.

I understand. I think I can understand, said Ariam Tekle of their statement. Shes a daughter of Eritrean immigrants, and her 2017 documentary,Appointment to the Sailors (translated to English), explored the lives of children of immigrants in Italy.

Related:Somali Americans share in the grief and pain over George Floyds killing

Tekle doesnt know the Duarte family but speculatesthey were trying to fend off racist attacks online. She believes if Duarte had died in the US, there would be a larger mainstream discussion about racism.

For me, its obviously a racist act, she said. Its a bit dangerous saying it isnt racist because it is.

And, as long as Italians dont recognize racism, she said, they wont be able to address it.

A contact-tracing app won’t work if people aren’t motivated to use it: AI expert – Montreal Gazette

Bengio sounded pessimistic when asked about the chances of Quebec choosing MILAs COVID-19 application.

Its out of my hands, he said. If they want to make a decision, they should send us a sign soon. I think they will take the federal app. From a political point of view, the advantage is that the federal government has already taken the risks with the app. It wouldnt be a controversial decision.

In the meantime, with a second wave of infections now gathering strength, the researcher is bracing for a difficult autumn.

As a citizen, Im worried, he said. I have a mother who is elderly and could easily get the virus. As a society, I think were taking this a little lightly. I see people walking down the street who are not respecting distancing. The discipline we had back in April has pretty much melted down.

Twitter Remembers Placing Random Bets with Universe to Motivate Themselves, Everyone Can Relate – News18

Posted: at 9:50 am

Wishing on a wishing star? | Image credit: YouTube

People find weird ways to self-motivate. Some use the practice of self-rewards while others trust the judgement of the wide and wise universe.

Placing a bet with the universe is something almost everyone does, whether they believe in spirituality or not. Something like, if A happens, then B will happen. Or when you have to make a choice in life, say choosing between subject C and D and you might place a completely arbitrary bet with the universe to make a decision?

If yes, then youre not alone. A number of people on Twitter are finding this tweet about such random bets very relatable.

A user named Shreya asked Tweeple if they ever place random bets with the universe like if I can throw this pen into that drawer Ill get an A on my assignment?

She asked if it was just her who did that.

Turns out, no, she definitely isnt the only one. Soon after her tweet, hundreds of people replied how they felt exactly same. The tweet received over 4,000 likes.

Many reciprocated their own versions.

One user wrote, This is how Ive gotten through every MCQ exam ever, if the person in front of me looks to the right in the next 10 seconds the answer is C. this may not be the best idea for exams but if the universe is on your side, who cares?

Only way I make decisions, if this ball of paper lands in garbage then, I will get increment at work, another response by a user who put all their faith in their aiming skills.

This superstitious user also used the universe bets for clues about exam. Putting the phone on charging then whatever % will be it charged at the time i will see it will be my % in exams. God how stupid I was

Here are some more reactions-

Cant say thats safe but okay.

Those who are rooting for their favorite IPL teams should listen to this advice.

ST. BONAVENTURE Even now, over two months after the official announcement, the reality of its situation still stings.

The St. Bonaventure mens soccer team would have been six games into its 2020 season by this point. It would have been on the cusp of starting an anticipated Atlantic 10 campaign in earnest. At 4 p.m. today, it would have taken its home turf at the Marra Athletics Complex for a game against Little 3 rival Niagara.

Instead, it will enter its second week of full team training, one that might be punctuated with, at most, an intrasquad scrimmage. Instead, mainly, it continues to be patient.

Bona knew by mid-July that it wasnt going to have its regularly-scheduled fall season, that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it would have to wait until the spring of 2021 for its next chance to play for real. And though that news was far more expected than it was for teams last March, making it a bit easier to process, it was still a massive blow.

It still meant no in-season soccer for guys who likely couldnt recall their last fall without it.

IM THINKING about my players, sixth-year Bona coach Kwame Oduro said during a phone interview last Thursday. I want them to have the same experience I had in college, and be good men, be good players, hopefully play after and do whatever they want. So for me, its all about them. In this generation where I think kids are more fragile, when a big change like this happens in your life, its pretty hard on some kids.

And yet, as any number of collegiate and scholastic athletes have, impressively, been willing and made to do, theyve tried their best to maintain a positive outlook in the face of such trying circumstances.

For Oduro and the Bonnies, that means spinning it thusly: Their 2020 campaign now runs a full year rather than just the fall semester.

Two years ago, Bona had only two weeks of preseason practice, and no games, before having to open, on the road, against No. 6 Louisville. Still, it fared well, scoring first and giving the Cardinals everything they could handle before bowing 2-1. Now, given the leagues decision to push the season into next spring, itll have put an entire semesters worth of work in before playing that first contest.

What people dont know is, all these big programs, theyre bringing kids in for summer camps; theyre there months before everyone else is, Oduro noted, and the rule says you can train, you can play, as long as youre doing camp. And so these guys are always ahead of all of us.

So in defense, maybe this catches everybody up. All the small schools like us, maybe we have a chance now to catch up and get our players a little more organized and ready against these big schools.

AS PART of its return-to-play action plan, Bona, as with the schools other athletics programs, has reacclimated in phases.

Initially, players had to quarantine for two weeks before returning to campus and turn in a negative COVID-19 test both prior and upon their arrival. In Phase 2 (after being cleared to begin workouts on Aug. 31), Bona was able to hold non-contact workouts in 10-player pods, which, according to Oduro, was like going back to summer camp, fun stuff, where youre doing things with the ball. Now in Phase 3, which began last week, the Bonnies are back to holding full team workouts with contact, playing and training the way were supposed to, Oduro said.

And so far, hes pleased with his teams progress.

After the first week, it was a little tough, because I think they were just excited to be back back on campus and with a ball, he acknowledged. I think (last week) was excellent. Theyve been going after it, theyre playing like we actually have a game this coming week. So thats awesome.

Looking ahead, he added: The next phase after these couple weeks is hopefully we can scrimmage teams, some friendlies around us if were allowed or able to to play teams (within the region) as a way to keep our guys motivated.

MOTIVATION, at this point, it seems, would be the biggest question mark.

The Bonnies dont have that Niagara game to look forward to today, nor the home coup within their home conference slate: a Saturday, Oct. 10 game under the lights against Duquesne. Without that carrot, and with both the pandemic and uncertainty still very much in the picture, perhaps they dont go quite as hard as they normally might. Maybe, right now, there are as many bad days as there are good.

But that hasnt been the case, Oduro insisted.

Obviously, we thought about that as a staff and were very glad that the motivation hasnt diminished, he said. In the end, youre Division I athletes. This is what they do, this is what theyve been doing their whole life. They want to compete, they want to play. So our job as coaches is to always try to put something in training to make sure theyre motivated.

Starting this week, Bona will stage a once-a-week intrasquad scrimmage, where its up to them to see if they can figure it out tactically, and a prize will be awarded to the winning team. Anything, Oduro said, that will help to keep it hungry.

Its all with the idea of selling to his Bonnies that this campaign has become a marathon rather than an eight-week fall sprint.

If youre a new player coming in, its actually great for you because now you get to be with your teammates, train and understand our principles, how we play and learn that, so that when it is a real game, you have a better understanding, Oduro said. Whereas before, you get two weeks and if you havent figured it out, sorry, its too late, were already in the middle of the season.

Were looking at a full-year season. What we learn now is only going to benefit us in the spring. Maybe thats the best way of doing it. Its a full year, so lets learn, lets play, lets enjoy it now, and then when competition comes, we all know our duties and our roles.

Xis motivations behind LAC standoff and why China has been hyperactive since 2017 – ThePrint

Posted: at 9:50 am

Text Size: A- A+

New Delhi:The changes made by the Narendra Modi government in Kashmir in 2019 and the claim that India was going to grab Aksai Chin may have been the reason behind the Chinese reaction in Ladakh, said ThePrints Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta in episode 574 of Cut The Clutter.

In the episode, Gupta decoded the motivations behind Chinas war-games and dissected the new details that have emerged on the Chinese military build-up along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), and how this could be Beijings efforts in carrying out psychological warfare.

Citing a report by US-based think tank Stratfor, Gupta noted that the Chinese, since 2017, have been upgrading their military infrastructure along the entire LAC and not just Ladakh.

This report says that the Chinese probably became hyperactive since the Doklam standoff, even though it happened in 2017.

New Delhi and Beijing were locked in an over-two-month standoff in 2017 in the China, Bhutan and India tri-junction at Doklam.

Also read: India, China say wont send more troops to Ladakh frontlines, agree to avoid misunderstandings

In the past few years, China has focused on improving its logistics along the LAC.

Their investments are also exaggeratedly inclined towards enhancing air power. This was done in two ways they built three new air bases and improved all existing air bases by hardening shelters and making space for more top-of-the-line aircraft.

According to Gupta, this is because it has been believed for a long time and quite rightly, that when it comes to the Tibetan frontier, India has an advantage in the air.

Most of the Chinese air basis are on the Tibetan plateau or Aksai Chin and are quite high already. At that altitude, a high performance aircraft cannot take off and land with their full complement of weaponry. So, there is a warlord penalty for operating those altitudes. Whereas all the Indian airbases are in the plains, he added.

All this infrastructure is being placed because China cannot afford many soldier casualties, argued Gupta. He explained that when a nation moves up on the value chain in terms of per capita income, its ability to accept casualties becomes less.

As a country becomes richer, its ability to take casualties becomes less and China has the additional problem of two generations of single child families, he explained. Therefore, the Indian approach now is inclined to be that the Chinese can be tied down in a war of attrition, which can cost them casualties.

While this is a sound strategy, Gupta cited Lt. Gen. H.S. Panag who argued that close combat on the ground is now pass. It is the twentieth century and the Chinese would like to fight on other planes.

Gupta explained that these Chinese air defence systems are directed towards denying India space within its own airspace.

Also read: 5 maps that tell you all you want to know about India vs China in Ladakh

I am guessing the Chinese motives behind heavy investments in air assets, air defence, helicopters and drones could also be psychological warfare, Gupta noted.

This is also the Chinese approach now because they are looking at a situation where they can achieve some kind of an objective without suffering casualties.

Something to look out for is the plenary of the Chinese Community Party in mid-October where President Xi Jinping has to speak, said Gupta. We will have to guess whether he wants to speak there as somebody whos settled with India and withdrew forces and de-escalated, or he wants to be there as someone who is claiming that he put India in its place.

In order to understand the motivations behind Chinese approach, Gupta warned that one mustacknowledge that the Chinese are notirrational.

One thing we have seen is that the Chinese dont want to combat on ground and want to fight in another dimension. Number two is that the Chinese were not surprised by the Indian response, he said.

They knew how India would react, especially after Doklam, which isnt even in Indian territory.

The Chinese could also be raising the costs of status quo for India. If India wants it borders as they are amid a standoff, they will have to spend money on more equipment, buy more supplies, order more Rafales (fighters). It will upset the defence budget, he said.

It will also make you shift emphasis from your Navy to the Army and divide your forces on a permanent basis between Pakistan and China frontier. So LAC could become the new LoC (Line of Control), Gupta added.

China could also have been upset by the events of 5 August 2019 in Kashmir and Indias activism in Doklam. So, maybe China could be joining hands with Pakistan in one theatre where they can collude and push India into some resolution on Kashmir that India cant sustain.

Another possibility could be to keep India stretched everywhere from Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh to Uttarakhand. They could stretch India out, which means really maximise the costs of maintaining the status quo on the borders, Gupta noted.

The Chinese motivations behind raising the status quo for India could be that President Xi Jinping actually wants a border settlement.

Gupta explained, Maybe Jinping actually wants a border settlement. And hes probably saying, look you got used to the status quo for 60 years. I dont think its workable. Let us get together, take a package deal and sort it out.

But at the same time, Jinping wants to come from a position of strength.

Motivated Bhullar back in action – The Hindu

Posted: at 9:50 am

Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar is set to return to action after more than six months as he tees up at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open this week.

The nine-time winner on Asian Tour, and one-time winner on European Tour, Bhullar last played on the Tour in March at the Malaysia Open.

Also in the field is Shubhankar Sharma, who got back to action with the Hero Open, the second event on the UK swing after the European Tour re-started in June.

Bhullar, whose sole win on European Tour came at the Fiji International in 2018, plays with Englishmen Ashley Chesters and Steve Brown.

Shubhankar plays with Dane Joachim Hansen and Englands David Law at the Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort in Northern Ireland.

Bhullar, who reached Europe earlier this week, said, I am really excited to get back on tour.

But I think this break was very much needed for me. I am feeling more motivated and ready for the tour.
