The Intergeneration Deaf Education Outreach Project - IDEO JSDF TF 099058
TERMS OF REFERENCE Facilitator/Trainer for Baseline Survey
Project: Intergeneration Deaf Education Outreach Title: Facilitator/Trainer for Baseline Survey Report to: Project Manager
BACKGROUND:
The Intergenerational Deaf Education Outreach Project IDEO is implemented by World Concern Development Organization (WCDO) in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) through four years (2011 2015) in four provinces of Hanoi, Thai Nguyen, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City. The Project is funded by the Japanese Social Development Fund, entrusted to the management of the World Bank.
Project Goal: To assist young deaf children to integrate into mainstream society, by piloting an innovative joint family and institution-based delivery system comprising screening, family support, and preschool services.
Main Objectives/Components:
Component 1: Demonstrating joint family-institution pre-school education for deaf children and developing essential knowledge base The component aims to create affordable ways of helping families with a deaf child via a 5-fulltime-person Family Support Team (comprising of two deaf "Family Mentors", one sign language teacher, one hearing teacher of the deaf children, and one hearing communication facilitator/interpreter) placed in each of the six centers/schools countrywide. In each selected center/school a model classroom will be established and resourced for use during training and to try out checklists and procedures, etc. The program will provide deaf children with early opportunities to acquire sign language in parallel with the ongoing opportunities to learn to speak through speech therapy and build up their parents knowledge and confidence about their children's capacity to communicate, learn and engage with a wider community.
An essential knowledge base will be established to support training, monitor the efficacy of educational approaches for young deaf children, conduct demonstration of program mechanisms and outcomes, and devise assessment tools for language development of the child. This knowledge base will provide information on preschool deaf education from local and global sources within Vietnam, and also support the use of research-based knowledge during decision-making processes about educational placement and communication for deaf children.
Component 2: Developing professional human resources for pre-school deaf education This component aims to train deaf adults to become family educators, hearing signing people to facilitate communication between hearing and deaf people in family and school settings, and hearing teachers of deaf children to assess and accommodate student language needs so that together they can provide effective preschool readiness services for deaf children and their families. This component will support the demonstration model in Component 1 to form Family Support Teams (FST). There will be the involvement from various international and national experts in training and supervising the activities.
Boulder yoga instructor Joan Zalk pleads guilty to running Chihuahua alongside car

Joan Renee Zalk (Boulder County Sheriff's Office)
A Boulder yoga instructor and acupuncturist accused of running a Chihuahua outside her car as she drove it down the street pleaded guilty to misdemeanor animal cruelty charges last week.
Joan Renee Zalk, 30, was sentenced to a one year deferred sentence and 100 hours of community service as part of the plea deal. The deferred sentence means the misdemeanor will be wiped from her record if she stays out of trouble for the duration of the sentence.
Zalk had been scheduled to go on trial in June on animal cruelty and menacing charges.
Witnesses told police in September 2011 that Zalk was driving a Toyota Camry at 10 to 15 mph along Moorhead Avenue as a small dog on a leash ran alongside.
According to the police report, Zalk also told a witness who confronted her, "Excuse me, I have a gun in my car. Do you want me to get it?"
As part of the plea deal, prosecutors dropped a menacing charge related to the gun allegation.
Zalk told police she was pet-sitting and was simply giving the dog exercise.

Yoga-studio owner on mission to help others

Kathleen Hines said she is on a journey to help people. She doesn't know exactly where that will take her, but right now, it has landed her in a new yoga studio in northeast Phoenix.
"A dear friend of mine asked me, 'What would you like to do for the rest of your life?' I said, 'I don't know.' He said, 'I'm going to be your partner in whatever business you decide.' "
That business is called Yoga Because, and Hines is vice president of the studio, at 32nd Street and Thunderbird Road, in a shopping center anchored by a Safeway grocery store.
"The Safeway is such a strong anchor. We've got street visibility and a lot of walk-by traffic," Hines said.
A yoga enthusiast, Hines decided to turn her passion into a career. The north Phoenix resident is working on her training to achieve a master level.
"The initial heart of the business isn't so that I can have a job, but so I could give to the community," she said.
Yoga has become much more mainstream since Hines was first drawn to it about 12 years ago, she said.
"It is a growing business," she said. "It's important to keep moving and working through restoring emotions in your body and making space for beautiful things. I think a lot of people are really knowing the value of yoga."
Yoga Because has 13 instructors and offers 42 classes a week, each 75 minutes long. After the first free class, prices vary from $13 per class for seniors to $110 a month for unlimited classes. The studio is at 3131 E. Thunderbird Road, Suite 15-A, Phoenix.

Top Four Yoga Tattoos

Several yoga tattoos exist, and many yoga instructors have tattoos as well. They all have meanings, and the instructors that chose to be inked with such beauty did so for a reason. I will point out the top four yoga tattoos, pointing out the meaning behind each one.
#1 Peacock tattoo
The peacock tattoo is beautiful, and there is a yoga pose (asana) called the peacock pose. This interesting bird is a symbol of an esteemed status in Chinese symbolism. In Buddhism the peacock symbolizes extensive awareness. Furthermore, in Christianity the peacock's circles or "eyes" within the feathers of the tail stand for the eyes of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit watching over faithful believers.
Carol Tessitore, a yoga instructor, displays her peacock tattoo and says that it is representative of personality -- at once "showy" and "skittish." Believe it or not, this work of art cost over 2,000 dollars and took more than 25 hours to complete.
#2 Lotus flower tattoo
First and foremost, the lotus is a plant within the water lily family, and in Greek mythology the lotus flower is said to cause a marvelous and bewitching forgetfulness upon eating it. The lotus flower also represents purity and divine birth. Different colors have different meanings. The white lotus is symbolic of a complete purity of ones mental state, as well as spiritual completeness. The red lotus stands for love and passion. The blue lotus is said to represent control over the senses and the ability to comprehend. The pink flower is the greatest of all lotuses, usually kept for the most godlike in Buddhism. Last but not least, the purple lotus is considered mystical.
Lula Trainor, another yoga practitioner, has the lotus tattooed on her chest and says, "It attracted me because it grows in muddy dark water and emerges into the light, and I thought that would be kind of cool."
#3 Yin Yang tattoo
In Chinese Yin Yang stand for flattering forces of nature, such as fire and water, representing how one is not supreme over the other. There are several varieties of Yin Yang tattoos that one can choose to get.
#4 Elephant tattoo

Tom Shawhan has been successful at coaching, but not retiring from it

May 18, 2012 - Lone Star Football League (LSFL) Rio Grande Valley Magic By CHRIS ARDIS of yourvalleyvoice.com
McALLEN - When Tom Shawhan accepted a scholarship to play football and to wrestle at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, he saw it as a chance to enjoy, for four more years, the sports he loved. Then, with his bachelor's in pre-med, he would leave the pads and the mats behind for medical school. But life has a funny way of leading us down a different path than the one we planned.
Shortly after entering UNO, Tom's dual-sport scholarship was amended to a single sport, football, because the coach wanted this defensive end to focus only on the gridiron. That wasn't the only path that was diverted. During the summer between his sophomore and junior year, Tom coached a basketball team of fourth through sixth graders for a Christian league at the YMCA.
"I realized I loved coaching," Tom said. He loved it so much that he returned to UNO and changed his major from pre-med to physical education.
Shortly after he graduated from college, Tom went to watch the Omaha Mustangs, the city's first semi-pro football team, practice. The team's coach approached him and asked, "Would you like to play for us?" Tom tried out and made the team. (The team is now the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League.) It was a summer football league, and Tom played with the team for two years.
Now a college graduate, Tom worked as a substitute teacher for one semester. Then he got a call from Lawton Bronson Consolidated School District in Iowa. Lawton, Iowa has a population of roughly 1,000 and Bronson, 300.
"Three days a week, I would teach p.e. to seventh through twelfth graders," Tom said, "and two days a week I'd teach kinder through sixth. I coached football, wrestling and track at the high school and drove the team bus."
Tom later moved to South Sioux City High School in Nebraska. There, he met Coach David Lee. When Coach Lee left to South Sioux City to become a principal, Tom assumed the position of head coach.
Tom and his wife, Donna, missed Omaha, so they headed home. Tom became head coach at Omaha Bryan High School. He didn't stay long at Bryan. Deciding he needed to take a break from teaching and coaching, Tom took a job as manager at a McDonald's.
"The entire year he was at McDonald's," Donna said, "former players kept going in there and asking him, 'When are you coming back?'" Tom knew he couldn't stay out of coaching for long.

Seaton Delaval woman to carry Olympic torch
Posted: at 5:19 pm
A WOMAN who has dedicated her life to coaching disabled sports stars has been chosen to be a Paralympic torch bearer.
Archery expert Helen George from Seaton Delaval was selected to carry the flame for her tireless work in supporting the Paralympic archery team who will represent Great Britain at this summers games.
Her leg of the torch relay will start after the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics at Stratford and before the Paralympic games begin on August 29.
Helen, 67, said: I am so happy to have been chosen. It is extra special to me because I will be carrying it from Stoke Mandeville in Buckinghamshire, which is where my career in archery all began.
After a career in the Womens Royal Air Force, Helen took up archery on a whim after her husband Tony, 64, joined a local club when they lived in the South of England 20 years ago.
She then spent a weekend as part of the support team in Stoke Mandeville for the World Championships in the early 1990s which gave her the archery bug.
She said: Tony took up archery but it just took over and its our life now and all our friends are archers. Stoke Mandeville is where Paralympic sport really started and its a fabulous place so to carry it from there makes it really special.
Following the couples move to the North East she joined the Killingworth Archers and represented the county before an injury forced her to give up the competitive side of the sport.
My doctor said I would have to give up so I started on the coaching, added Helen. Ive been working as a team leader and running courses for soldiers coming back from Afghanistan and Ive met some incredible young people.
She now personally coaches Paralympic hopeful, GB archer Katy Murray, who will take part in this summers games.
