Working up a sweat: It could save your life

Physical activity that makes you puff and sweat is key to avoiding an early death, a large Australian study of middle-aged and older adults has found.
The researchers followed 204,542 people for more than six years, and compared those who engaged in only moderate activity (such as gentle swimming, social tennis, or household chores) with those who included at least some vigorous activity (such as jogging, aerobics or competitive tennis).
They found that the risk of mortality for those who included some vigorous activity was 9 to 13 per cent lower, compared with those who only undertook moderate activity.
"The benefits of vigorous activity applied to men and women of all ages, and were independent of the total amount of time spent being active," said lead author Dr Klaus Gebel from James Cook University's Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention.
"The results indicate that whether or not you are obese, and whether or not you have heart disease or diabetes, if you can manage some vigorous activity it could offer significant benefits for longevity."
Co-author Dr Melody Ding from University of Sydney's School of Public Health, said the results indicated that vigorous activities should be more strongly encouraged in clinical and public health guidelines.
The current advice from the World Health Organization -- and health authorities in countries including the US, UK and Australia -- is for adults to accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week.
"The guidelines leave individuals to choose their level of exercise intensity, or a combination of levels, with two minutes of moderate exercise considered the equivalent of one minute of vigorous activity," Dr Ding said.
"It might not be the simple two-for-one swap that is the basis of the current guidelines," she said.
"Our research indicates that encouraging vigorous activities may help to avoid preventable deaths at an earlier age."

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to top form last weekend with five goals against Granada, and he is now urging his supporters to get themselves into shape.
The Real Madrid forward has not been at his best this year, but turned things around with a stunning display on Sunday, during Real Madrid's 9-1 win.
And the Portuguese star, and World Player of the Year, took to Twitter to share his celebrations with his many followers, posing with a bike and encouraging them to start riding.

The five words people dread hearing from their friends

Fossicking for problems in other people's lives isn't friendship.
"But how are youreally?" It was the second time my recent acquaintance had asked how I was. I'd never noticed how intrusive they were - those five little words.
I'd answered "fine" the first time. Not "fine" in that emotionally brittle sense that really means I'm-anything-but-fine (and-if-you-really-cared-you'd-know-it-already). I'd meant it in the neutral sense of "everything in my life is pretty ace right now and 'fine' just about covers it".
But apparently she knew better. She was sure I was concealing something.
Her brow furrowed and she tilted her head to the side in a way that said "We both know that's not true and you're only fooling yourself."
It's done with such conviction and consistency that I inevitably leave every interaction wondering if I am indeed fooling myself. Maybe I'm too deluded to realise my life really does suck and I just need a 'good' friend to guide me to my pit of despair so that I may wallow in it.
Over the years, I've had similar conversations or versions of it with people who insist on treating each and every social interaction as if I were lying on a couch with a box of tissues. Call it the 'Opraheffect': the invasion of therapy culture into every nook and cranny of life.

One Mind, One Consciousness – when spirituality meets …
Posted: at 1:42 am
his distinguished Texas physician, deeply rooted in the scientific world, has become an internationally influential advocate of the role of the mind in health and the role of spirituality in healthcare. Bringing the experience of a practicing internist and the soul of a poet to the discourse, Dr. Larry Dossey offers panoramic insight into the nature and the future of medicine.
Upon graduating with honors from the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Dossey worked as a pharmacist while earning his M.D. degree from Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, 1967. Before completing his residency in internal medicine, he served as a battalion surgeon in Vietnam, where he was decorated for valor. Dr. Dossey helped establish the Dallas Diagnostic Association, the largest group of internal medicine practitioners in that city, and was Chief of Staff of Medical City Dallas Hospital in 1982.
An education steeped in traditional Western medicine did not prepare Dr. Dossey for patients who were blessed with "miracle cures," remissions that clinical medicine could not explain. "Almost all physicians possess a lavish list of strange happenings unexplainable by normal science," says Dr. Dossey. "A tally of these events would demonstrate, I am convinced, that medical science not only has not had the last word, it has hardly had the first word on how the world works, especially when the mind is involved."
The author of nine books and numerous articles, Dr. Dossey is the former Executive Editor of the peer-reviewed journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, the most widely subscribed-to journal in its field. The primary quality of all of Dr. Dossey's work is scientific legitimacy, with an insistent focus on "what the data show." As a result, his colleagues in medical schools and hospitals all over the country trust him, honor his message, and continually invite him to share his insights with them. He has lectured all over the world, including major medical schools and hospitals in the United States --Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, the Universities of Pennsylvania, California, Washington, Texas, Florida, Minnesota, and the Mayo Clinic.
The impact of Dr. Dossey's work has been remarkable. Before his book Healing Words was published in 1993, only three U.S. medical schools had courses devoted to exploring the role of religious practice and prayer in health; currently, nearly 80 medical schools have instituted such courses, many of which utilize Dr. Dossey's works as textbooks. In his 1989 book Recovering the Soul, he introduced the concept of "nonlocal mind" -- mind unconfined to the brain and body, mind spread infinitely throughout space and time. Since then, "nonlocal mind" has been adopted by many leading scientists as an emerging image of consciousness. Dr. Dossey's ever-deepening explication of nonlocal mind provides a legitimate foundation for the merging of spirit and medicine. The ramifications of such a union are radical and call for no less than the reinvention of medicine.
