'Zen doodling' the downtown Staff report MorganHillTimes.com |

Forty-five members of the Morgan Hill Zen Doodle Club decorated 72 10-inch wood tiles with various images as part of the Downtown Art Zen Doodle Project, which is currently on display for the next six months at the Third Street Promenade in Downtown Morgan Hill. The project was funded through a grant from the City of Morgan Hills Placemaking Mini-Grant Art Program, which offered small grants of $500 to $10,000 for artists and community groups interested in engaging with the downtown in a creative manner. Co-chairs Sandra Dunie and Nancy Domnauer organized the art undertaking with a theme of Healthy Living In Morgan Hill. The local club is a group of community members, ages ranging from 7 to 70 years old, who meet monthly to enjoy zen doodling, a meditative drawing art form.

A Listmania! list by T. Davis (South Bend, IN USA) Share with friends The list author says: "I'm definitely not a fitness expert, but step aerobics helped me lose 35 lbs. and have the most toned legs (and even arms a little) I've ever had. I love the extra calorie burning and sculpting the step workouts offer. This list is just what I've got in my current rotation so far. I hope to keep adding to it as I find new step workouts." 1.Simply Step: Classic MovesDVD ~ Gin Miller The list author says: "Wow! Don't let the basic moves fool you. Higher intensity options and an increased step level turn this into a 60-minute sweat fest!" $19.95Used & New from: $4.86 (105 customer reviews) Create your own Listmania! with this product 2.Kathy Smith - Power Step Workout [VHS]VHS Kathy Smith The list author says: "This is probably my favorite of the Kathy Smith step workouts in my rotation." It's actually sort of circuit training with two toning segments with hand weights. Very challenging, but worth the effort." $7.67Used & New from: $0.01 (90 customer reviews) Create your own Listmania! with this product 6.Step AerobicsDVD ~ Gilad The list author says: "I don't care what anybody says, I love exercising with Gilad. Zero." $11.00Used & New from: $0.16 (15 customer reviews) Create your own Listmania! with this product 17.Jane Fonda's Step and Stretch Workout [VHS]VHS Jane Fonda The list author says: "Multiple short step routines are easy to follow and the instructors are friendly and sincere." $17.89Used & New from: $1.81 (32 customer reviews) Create your own Listmania! with this product 18.Jane Fonda's Step Aerobic and Abdominal Workout [VHS]VHS Jane Fonda The list author says: "Despite its age still a good workout. Vigorous exercise helps people live longer: Study

Posted: at 1:48 am

MIAMI: Vigorous exercise, the kind that makes you sweat, get red in the face and breathe hard, may be better than moderate exercise when it comes to living longer, researchers said Monday.

The study by Australian researchers is based on more than 200,000 adults over age 45, and is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine.

The study participants were followed for more than six years.

Those who did jogging, aerobics or competitive tennis -- vigorous exercise for 30 percent of their weekly workouts -- had a mortality rate that was nine to 13 percent lower than those who did moderate exercise, like swimming, social tennis, or household chores.

"The benefits of vigorous activity applied to men and women of all ages, and were independent of the total amount of time spent being active," said lead author Klaus Gebel from James Cook University's Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention.

"The results indicate that whether or not you are obese, and whether or not you have heart disease or diabetes, if you can manage some vigorous activity it could offer significant benefits for longevity."

Currently, the World Health Organization urges adults to do at least 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week.

But the current research suggests that given the choice, people should opt for some higher intensity exercise if they can, and if their doctor agrees, the study authors said.

"Our research indicates that even small amounts of vigorous activity could help reduce your risk of early death," Gebel said.

"For those with medical conditions, for older people in general, and for those who have never done any vigorous activity or exercise before, it's always important to talk to a doctor first."

Vigorous exercise better than daily stroll for long life

Study found vigorous activity offers 'significant benefits for longevity' Jogging, aerobics or competitive tennis was better than gentle exercise Health bodies should change their guidance to recommend tough exercise Even people with diabetes and obesity benefit from breaking into a sweat

Working up the occasional sweat while exercising in middle age will help you live longer than just going for a daily stroll, research suggests.

A major study found those who undertook even the odd period of vigorous activity were more likely to avoid an early death than those who stuck to only moderate exercise.

Even those who have heart disease or diabetes would benefit from exercise that makes them puff and sweat, researchers said although they warned them to consult a doctor first.

The findings call into question NHS guidelines which suggest the recommended weekly 150 minutes of moderate exercise for adults is just as good as 75 minutes of vigorous activity.

Healthy Living: Trampoline parks offer fun fitness alternative

Posted: at 1:48 am

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Trampoline parks are offering options when it comes to making fitness fun.

Parents are jumping at the chance to be a part of Air-robics at Air U in Shreveport.

Marissa Tavantana Diaz has been teaching trampoline aerobics at Air U since the class started about a month ago.

"The first couple of times, I'm not going to lie, it really is a different kind of workout. But overall it's great, said Diaz. It's a lot harder than regular aerobics, because you're constantly moving and it's actually a full body workout versus aerobics.

The class is much different than a typical aerobics class.

We do circuits and we do suicides and we do sprints and triceps and biceps and sit ups. We do everything."

Mary Catherine Ackel has been taking the class since it was first offered. She said she was glad she how has more alternatives to stay in shape.

"I hate running on a treadmill. I felt like it was so boring and I wanted to find something new and different to do that would keep me interested," said Ackel.

Air U offers trampoline aerobics class every Monday and Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. They also have child care during this class.
