Integral yoga – Wikipedia
Posted: at 9:48 am
Integral yoga, also called supramental yoga, is the yoga-based philosophy and practice of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother (Mirra Alfassa). Integral yoga finds all life conscious or subconscious a yoga, defines the term yoga as a methodised effort towards self-perfection by the expression of the secret potentialities latent in the being and highest condition of victory in that effort - a union of the human individual with the universal and transcendent existence which is seen partially as expressions in humans and in the cosmos. As a yoga idea, that Spirit manifests itself in a process of involution. The reverse process of evolution is driven toward a complete manifestation of spirit.
According to Sri Aurobindo, the current status of human evolution is an intermediate stage in the evolution of being, which is on its way to the unfolding of the spirit, and the self-revelation of divinity in all things. Yoga is a rapid and concentrated evolution of being, which can take effect in one life-time, while unassisted natural evolution would take many centuries or many births. Aurobindo suggests a grand program called sapta chatushtaya (seven quadrates) to aid this evolution.
Contents
Sri Aurobindo finds that there are two extreme views of life, The materialists & The Ascetics
The Materialists: He finds materialists would only accept the existance of matter or force and deny anything else, & would in their argument find anything which is not knowable (that which would escape once thought and speech) as inert or a passive, silent Atman, an illusion or a hallucination, this affirmation by the materialists is based on the association of the real with the materially perceptible, and becomes the basis of his assumption on all his arguments. Which Sri Aurobindo finds cannot give a impartial reasoning. Due to the above notion the materialists would refuse any further inquiry, thus never having a satisfied understanding. He recommends that the only way to reconcile the materialistic mind with the other truth would be to cross over the layers of inner consciouness either by objective analysis of life & mind as to matter or by subjective synthesis and illumination, arrive at a state of the ultimate unity without denying the energy of the expressing multiplicity of the universe. He finds that the current World is in a state of rationalistic materialism, & finds that this rationalistic movement has served human kind in a positive way, by purifying intellect from the dogmas, superstitions clearing path to a better advancement of Humanity.. Sri Aurobindo finds that root of this Scientific movement to be a search for knowledge, due to this root the movement would not come to an halt & it's progress is a sure sign that it would carry forward in reaching the other part of knowledge which vedantins had found in a different way..
The Ascetics: would only accept spirit/Atman and terming the remaining as mechanical unintelligent substance or energy, leading to believing the reality to be an illusion of senses. Sri Aurobindo finds when the mind retracts from external activities and has experience of silence, a powerfull convincing experience that only the pure self or non-being is real leads them to disregard the outer world. he finds this as an revolt of spirit on matter which was made famous by Buddhism affirming that it is impossible to find a solution in the world which is termed to be dual in nature, but to escape into Nirvana, Brahmaloka or Goloka as beyond. He finds that this apporach is slowly comming to an end and had it's importance as the part of evolution, but is quite different than what was present in vedic period.
Sri Aurobindo terms the Integral yoga to hava a commprehensive approach not rejecting both the ways and towards what vedantins had affirmed. and affirms that not only the eternal spirit which inhibits a body as the divinde but also matter to be divine.
Spirit or satchitananda is the Absolute, the source of all that exists.[web 1] It is the One, having three aspects: Sat (truth), Citta (consciousness, awareness), and ananda (bliss, happiness).
Involution is the extension of Spirit, the Absolute, to create a universe of separate forms. Being manifests itself as a multiplicity of forms, meanwhile becoming lost in the inconscience of matter.[10] The first manifestation of Spirit in the process of involution is as Satchitananda, and then as Supermind, the intermediate link between the higher (Spirit) and lower (matter, life, and mind) nature.[11]
According to Aurobindo the world is a differentiated unity. It is a manifold oneness, that generates an infinite variety of lifeforms and substances. The lifeforms and substances are stretched out on a wide range, from physical matter to a pure form of spiritual being, where the subject becomes fully aware of itself as spirit:
Above Mind proper lie various higher levels of Mind, which ascend toward Spirit.
Through evolution Spirit rediscoveres itself as Spirit. Evolution follows a developmental trajectory from the original inconscience of matter into life, to mind, and then to spiritualized mind, culminating in The Supermind or Truth Consciousness.[14] Evolution is teleological, since the developing entity contains within itself already the totality toward which it develops. It is not a mechanistic or deterministic teleology, but a "manifestation of all the possibilities inherent in the total movement."
The goal of Integral yoga is to become aware of the Divine, to integrate the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of ourselves, and to manifest the Divine at earth. According to Sri Aurobindo, all life is Yoga, while Yoga as a sadhana is a methodised effort towards self-perfection, which brings to expression the latent, hidden potentialities of being. Success in this effort unifies the human individual with the universal and transcendental Existence. Integral yoga reunites "the infinite in the finite, the timeless in the temporal and the transcendent with the immanent.
Sri Aurobindo discerns three types of being, namely the Outer being, the Inner being, and the Psychic Being.
The Outer Being includes the physical, vital and mental levels of Being, which characterises our everyday consciousness and experience. It includes several levels of the subconscient: a mental subconscient, a vital subconscient, and a physical subconscient, down to the material Inconscient.[web 2] Integral Yoga involves going beyond this surface consciousness to the larger life of the Inner Being, which is more open to spiritual realisation.
The Inner Being, or Subliminal, includes the inner realms or aspects of the physical, vital and mental being. They have a larger, subtler, freer consciousness than that of the everyday consciousness. Its realisation is essential for any higher spiritual realisation.
The Inner Being is also transitional between the surface or Outer Being and the Psychic or Inmost Being. By doing yoga practice (sadhana), the inner consciousness is being opened, and life turns away from the outward to the inward. The inner consciousness becomes more real than the outer consciousness, and becomes a peace, happiness and closeness to the Divine.[21]
The Psychic Being is Sri Aurobindo's term for the Personal Evolving Soul, the principle of Divine spirit in every individual.[note 1] The Psychic is the "Innermost Being",[note 2] the permanent being in us that stands behind and supports the physical, vital and mental principles. It "uses mind, life and body as its instruments," undergoing their fate yet also transcending them.[24]
In Integral Yoga the goal is to move inward and discover the Psychic Being, which then can bring about a transformation of the outer nature. This transformation of the outer being or ego by the Psychic is called Psychicisation; it is one of the three necessary stages in the realisation of the Supramental consciousness. This Psychic transformation is the decisive movement that enables a never-ending progress in life, through the power of connecting to one's inner spirit or Divine Essence. The Psychic begins its evolution completely veiled and hidden, but grows through successive lifetimes, and gradually exerts a greater influence, taking on the role of spiritual Guide.[25]
Central Being refers to the transcendent and eternal spirit, as opposed to the incarnate and evolving Soul, which he calls the Psychic Being. Sometimes it refers to both of them together as the essential spiritual core of the being.[26] The Central Being "presides over the different births one after the other but is itself unborn" (ibid p.269). This transcendent Central Being or Spirit is also designated as the Jiva or Jivatman, although the meaning of these terms in Sri Aurobindo's philosophy differs greatly from that of much of conventional Vedanta (especially Advaita Vedanta)
The levels of being ascend from the inconscient to the Supermind.
Inconscient Matter is the lowest level of involution. Spirit is still present in the inconscient: "The Inconscient is the Superconscient's sleep."[web 2] The Inconscient is also the instrument of the Superconsciousness which has created the Universe. According to Satprem, the Inconscient lies at the bottom of the physical subconscient,[web 2] and "life emerged [...] at the border between the material inconscient and the physical consciousness [...] in our body.[web 2]
The physical, vital and mental levels of being contain both a subconscient and a subtle or subliminal part.
The subconscient parts are the submerged parts. It contains "obstinate samskaras, impressions, associations, fixed notions, habitual reactions formed by the past." According to Satprem, there are several levels of the subconscient, corresponding with the different levels of our being: a mental subconscient, a vital subconscient, and a physical subconscient, down to the material Inconscient.[web 2]
According to Aurobindo, the body is partly a creation of the inconscient or subconscient. According to The Mother, the ordinary, false consciousness, which is common to material body-consciousness, is derived from the subconscient and the inconscient. According to Aurobindo, the outer being depends on the subconscient, which hinders the spiritual progress. Only by living in the inner being can this obstacle be overcome.
According to Sharma, the subconscient is "the inconscient in the proces of becoming conscient." It is a submerged part of the personality without waking consciousness, but which does receive impressions, and influences the conscious mind. According to Sharma, it includes the unconscious mind which is described by psychologists like Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, though it includes much more than the unconscious of (Freudian) psychology.[note 3]
The subtle or subliminal is the subtle, higher counterpart of the subconscient. According to Sharma, "it has an inner mind, an inner vital being, and an inner subtle physical being, wider than man's consciousness." It can directly experience the Universal, and "it is the source of inspirations, intuitions, ideas, will [...] as well as [...] telepathy [and] clearvoyance."
The gross body commonly referred to in yoga constitutes mainly of two parts the material physical body (annakosha) and the nervous system normally refer to as vital vehicle (Prana kosha) in Integral yoga.
The Physical level refers to both the physical body and the body's consciousness. The body is just as conscious as the vital and mental parts of the being, only it is a different type of consciousness. The Physical not only shades upwards to higher ontological levels, but also downwards into the Subconscient.[note 4]
The Subtle physical is Sri Aurobindo's term for a subtler aspect of the physical nature. This has many qualities not found in the gross physical nature. In The Agenda, The Mother often refers to it. It might be compared to the etheric body and plane, or even the astral body and plane. The term "subtle physical" is used to distinguish it from gross (sthula) or outer material physical.[note 5]
The Vital level of the being refers to the life force, but also to the various passions, desires, feelings, emotions, affects, compulsions, and likes and dislikes. These strongly determine human motivation and action through desire and enthusiasm.
Unlike Western psychology, in which mind, emotions, instincts, and consciousness are all lumped together, Sri Aurobindo strongly distinguishes between the "Vital" and the "Mental" faculties.
In addition to the individual Vital faculty, Sri Aurobindo refers to a Vital Plane or Vital world, which would seem to be partly equivalent to the Astral Plane of popular occultism and New Age thought.
Mind proper is the conceptual and cognitive mind. Mind is a subordinate process of the Supermind. It is the intermediary stage between the Divine and the mundane life. It works by measuring and dividing reality, and has lost sight of the Divine. It is the seat of ignorance, yet it is still capable of an upward ascent toward the Divine.
Unlike Western psychology, in which mind and consciousness are considered the same, Sri Aurobindo strongly distinguishes between the "Mental" and the "Vital" (emotional) faculties, as well as between Mind and pure Consciousness. Sri Aurobindo in part bases his concept of the Mental on his reading of the Taittiriya Upanishad, the mental being (or perhaps just the Mental Purusha) is the mano-maya-atma - the self made of mind (manas).
For Sri Aurobindo, Mind or the Mental being is not simple and uniform, but consists itself of various strata and subdivisions, which act at different levels of being. These various faculties are described or variously referred to, usually in obliquely or in passing, in some of his books, including Savitri, which has poetic references to many types of Mind.[45] In his letters answering questions from disciples, Sri Aurobindo summarises the characteristics of the various levels of Mind.[46][note 6]
Above mind proper lie various higher individual levels of mind, namely the Higher Mind, Illumined Mind, Intuitive Mind and Overmind, which ascend toward the Spirit, and provide a higher and more inclusive vision of reality:
Supermind is the infinite unitary Truth Consciousness or Truth-Idea beyond the three lower planes of Matter, Life, and Mind. Supermind is the dynamic form of Sachchidananda (Being-Consciousness-Bliss), and the necessary mediator or link between the transcendent Sacchidananda and the creation.[52]
Humans are stuck between matter and Spirit, due to the habits of personality and partial awareness, which arise from Ignorance.
Humans are accustomed to respond to certain vibrations more than other. These customs develop into one's desire, pain, feelings, which are all a set of habits. This crystallised set of habits becomes one's personality. This is normally believed to be "self". The appearance of stable personality is given by constant repetition and recurrence of the same vibrations and formations.
According to Aurobindo, humans face three basic problems:
The fundamental cause of falsehood, error and evil is Ignorance. Ignorance is a self-limiting knowledge, which arises with exclusive concentration in a single field. According to Aurobindo, human notion of good, bad & evil are uncertain and relative.
Unlike other Yoga practices Integral yoga does not propose any kind of physical asanas, breathing techniques or external movements. It is more psychological in nature, with internal reflection and self analysis & correction as main tools of development .
The main practices or approaches are divided into
The limitations of the present being can be overcome by the Triple transformation, the process in which the lower nature is transformed into the divine nature. It consists of the inward psychicisation by which the sadhak gets in contact with the inner divine principle or Psychic Being; the spiritual transformation or spiritualisation; and the Supramentalisation of the entire being.[note 9]
Psychicisation is a turn inward, so that one realises the psychic being, the psychic personality or Divine Soul, in the core of one's being. The Divine Soul serves as a spiritual Guide in the yoga, and enables one to transform the outer being.[59] It may also help avoid the dangers of the spiritual path. There is an intermediate zone, a dangerous and misleading transitional spiritual and pseudospiritual region between the ordinary consciousness and true spiritual realisation.[60]
Psychisiation consists of three methods. In "consecration" one opens oneself to the Force before engaging in an activity. "Moving to the Depths" (or "concentration") is a movement away from the surface existence to a deeper existence within. "Surrender" means offering all one's work, one's life to the Divine Force and Intent.[61][62] Guided by the evolving divine soul within, the sadhak moves away from ego, ignorance, finiteness, and the limitations of the outer being. It is thanks to this guidance by the Divine Soul that the sadhak can avoid the pitfalls of the spiritual path.
As a result of the Psychicisation, light, peace, and power descend into the body, transforming all of its parts, physical, vital, and mental. This is the Spiritual transformation, or Spiritualisation, the concretisation of the larger spiritual consciousness. It is equivalent to "enlightenment", as found in Vedanta and Buddhism.
Aurobindo asserted that spiritual aspirants may pass through an intermediate zone where experiences of force, inspiration, illumination, light, joy, expansion, power, and freedom from normal limits are possible. These can become associated with personal aspirations, ambitions, notions of spiritual fulfilment and yogic siddhi, and even be falsely interpreted as full spiritual realisation. One can pass through this zone, and the associated spiritual dangers, without harm by perceiving its real nature, and seeing through the misleading experiences. Those who go astray in it may end in a spiritual disaster, or may remain stuck there and adopt some half-truth as the whole truth, or become an instrument of lesser powers of these transitional planes. According to Aurobindo, this happens to many sadhaks and yogis.[63][64]
Supramentalisation is the realisation of the Supermind, or Supramental consciousness, and the resulting transformation of the entire being. Psychicisation and spirtualisation serve as necessary prerequisites for the Supramentalisation of the entire being.[65]
The supramental transformation is the final stage in the integral yoga, enabling the birth of a new individual, fully formed by the supramental power. Such individuals would be the forerunners of a new supra-humanity, grounded in truth-consciousness. All aspects of division and ignorance of consciousness, at the vital and mental levels, would be overcome, and replaced with a unity of consciousness at every plane. And even the physical body transformed and divinised. A new supramental species would then emerge, living a supramental, gnostic, divine life on earth.[66]
Aurobindo describes several results and different stages depicting the stages of development in integral yoga, called together the sapta chatushtaya, "seven quadrates."[web 3][web 4][note 10] It consists of:.[web 3]
Aurobindo had a strong influence on Ken Wilber's integral theory of spiritual development. Wilber's Causal and Ultimate stages closely resemble Aurobindo's higher mental stages, but Wilber lumps together levels of Being, types of Being and developmental stages.

The Autobiography of Barbara Marx Hubbard
Posted: at 9:45 am
A STORY OF THE RISE OF AN EVOLUTIONARY WOMAN
Barbara Marx Hubbard is an Evolutionary Woman. She has offered and developed the new worldview of Conscious Evolution as the fundamental context for the next stage of human evolution. She has written eight books and 195 volumes of Journal begun in 1948 to be communicated over Deepak Chopras ISHAR, a new communication system and archive for evolutionaries. She founded and led the Foundation for Conscious Evolution since 1993 and is the co-chair of the Center for Integral Wisdom, cofounder of the Association for Global New Thought and the World Future Society, a member of Evolutionary Leaders Group, the Club of Budapest and more.
Evolutionary Women fall in love attracted by shared purpose to fulfill their greater destiny.
In 1951, Barbara married artist Earl Hubbard. They met in a small caf on the left bank in Paris in 1948 where she was on her Junior Year abroad from Bryn Mawr College.
Earl came in, a handsome American, and sat opposite her at the little wooden table. The chestnuts roasted in the fire. The November day was cold. She had been trying to be an existentialist, to believe there was no deeper meaning but what she gave it. She wore her beret, smoked Gaulois and had half a bottle of red wine for lunch. She was depressed. Soon she gained her courage, smiled, offered him some of her wine and asked him her fundamental life question: What do you think is the meaning of all our new scientific, technological, industrial power that is good?
He amazed her by saying, I am an artist seeking a new image of man commensurate with our powers to shape the future.
He told her that when a culture loses its story, it loses its greatness. We lost our grand narrative. We could no longer believe in the Renaissance story of progress after the two world wars, the holocaust, and the loss of millions of lives. At that time in Paris the worldviews were existentialism, nihilism, absurdism, materialism. No one at the Ecole des Sciences Politiques where she was in school had any hope, yet she was innately hopeful. But about what? That was her question.
Earl enthralled her. He told her it was up to the artist to help humanity find its new story. As he spoke it flashed through her mind, Im going to marry you. And she did!
They married in 1951 in New York City and had five children. She wrote and edited several books with Earl, including The Search Is On, in deep morning breakfast dialogues as they sought to understand the next step in human evolution as a cultural humanity now being born into the Earth/space environment.
Gradually, she realized that something profound was missing in her life. She loved her husband, her children and was following all the requirements of the 1951 women: Get married, have as many children as possible and care for your husband and home. She did it all with love, yet she became deeply depressed, feeling she was literally turning into stone.
Inspired by the great American dream that we are seeking life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, she set out to discover who was happy in Lakeville, Connecticut. To her dismay, she found a sort of mildew of depression coating the comfortable lives of this exurban community. Something was missing. What was it?
During the 1960s she found the answer through Abraham H. Maslows Toward a Psychology of Being. As a psychiatrist studying wellness rather than illness, he discovered that all Self Actualizing happy, beneficent people had one thing in common: Chosen work they found intrinsically self rewarding and of service.
He advised everyone to Be bold. Do what attracts you.
What attracted her was Dr. Maslow, so she was bold, called him up, asked him for lunch, and he came!
That was the beginning of her emergence as an Evolutionary Woman. It happens when the woman learns that her depression is a signal for something more to be expressed, and learns to say YES to the impulse of attraction within her. The something more begins to be revealed.
At the lunch, Dr. Maslow gave her a list of 300 people, his Eupsychian Network of Good Souls, that he had collected over a lifetime. Many of them became founders of the human potential movement. Her YES had brought her in touch with the newly emerging network of evolutionary transformation.
She returned from the New York luncheon determined to transform her life with this precious list. She wrote a letter to all three hundred people, asking them what they thought was The Next Step for the Future Good. She offered to publish their key responses in the Center Letter, which she created herself.
In the early 1960s she read Teilhard de Chardins The Phenomenon of Man. She was thrilled to discover evolution has a purpose. For billions of years it has been moving from single cell, to multi-cell, to animal, to human and now to us. The inner drive, the consciousness force, the divine in nature had a direction toward higher consciousness, purpose and more complex of synergistic order. The epiphany was the amazing realization that the direction of evolution and her own are one.
The Evolutionary Woman gains a new identity. She is the universe in person. Her passion to grow, to love more, be more, create more is the Eros of the Universe itself animating her.
Teilhard intuited the next stage of evolution. Before the Internet, he declared that the noosphere, the thinking layer of Earth would one day get its collective eyes. When enough love and creativity entered that field of the planetary nervous system, (now growing rapidly through internet, Facebook , Twitter, etc.), people would be changed, not one by one, but all at once. He called it the Christification of the Earth.
Barbara was deeply excited. In some intuitive way she realized that it was her mission to help the noosphere get its collective eyes and to help the nervous system of the planet to be filled with innovation and love. She realized it was like the nervous system of a new born baby, about to wake up a new planetary consciousness. A vocation of destiny was born. She yearned to become a communicator of evolutionary potential.
Evolutionary Women are animated by a unique expression of the Impulse of Evolution as their own calling to evolve.
Through the great Indian Sage Sri Aurobindos magnum opus The Life Divine, she learned that the impulse of evolution, the supramental genius of evolution was arising in evolving humans. At some point, he prophesied, we would become Gnostic Humans, a new species, beyond the animal/ human life cycle.
Evolutionary women often feel we are not getting older but getting newer. Something new is being born in us.
Then came Buckminster Fuller. He told us that Space Ship Earth came without an operating manual, so that we would have to learn how to guide the system. He informed us we have the technology, resources and know-how to make the world work for allif we learned synergy and cooperation.
These four great pioneers, with others, laid the foundation for the Evolutionary movement. She had learned the evolutionary code. Evolution has direction, purpose and intent. The intent is more consciousness, creativity and love by means of ever-greater complexity or synergy.
She discovered that this was her intent. She and the Impulse were one.
She became a conscious Evolutionary Woman!
The next great breakthrough for her emergence was meeting Dr. Jonas Salk in the early sixties. She read something he had written on a Theater of Man, wrote a piece on it and sent it to Jerry Piel, editor of the Scientific American and on Jonass board. Jerry gave it to Jonas, who called Barbara one sunny day in the fall in New England. She had had her fifth child, and was sitting on the lawn with them all in the sun.
The phone rang, Mrs. Hubbard? This is Jonas Salk. The minute she heard his voice she realized something new had happened. Even though she didnt know it then, he was an evolutionary man. It was coded in his voice exciting, inviting, charged with vitality.
He said, Mrs. Hubbard, You have written my vision better than I could have. We are two peas in the same genetic pod. Can I take you to lunch?
She said yes!
He came the next week to drive her from Connecticut to New York. It was a magnificent fall day; the apple orchard sparkled with red and gold, the sun burned warm on the grass. The doorbell rang. Her heart skipped a beat; she opened the door to him. He smiled that incredible magnanimous, sexy smile and said: Mrs. Hubbard, this is the Garden of Eden.
Dr. Salk, she said, Youre right. Im Eve and Im leaving! He looked started. It started her too.
During the ride to New York she told him everything that was wrong with her: Her love of the future, the yearning to do more, the sense of deep vocation, a vital task that she was to perform.
He said, Barbara, this is not what is wrong about you. This is what is right about you. You are a mutant! And I will introduce you to the few others I have been able to find in 25 years. This was the next step in the emergence of an Evolutionary Woman.
She had met another evolutionary being. The Evolutionary Impulse became self aware in her.
He turned up the frequency of the inner code of evolution within her by resonating with it with his own being.
She wrote in her Journal in 1964:
This Christmas of 1964 is the best of my life, not because I have achieved my ideals, but because the problem of identity has disappeared. I can never again say, as I once did, in my own eyes Im nothing, for, as all people are, I, too, am the inheritor of the evolution of the ages. In my genes are the generations. Every cell in my body identifies me with the great and terrible adventure of inanimate to animate to human and every desire of my being sets me passionately to work to further the rise of humanness out of humanity. I am what was and what will be. If I am nothing, life is nothing; that it cannot be and be.
The rise of the Evolutionary Woman is awakened by the incarnation of the Impulse of Evolution as ones own inner drive to become ones unique self.
Your life purpose becomes the unique expression of the irreducibly beautiful impulse of creation as Marc Gafni writes in Becoming Your Unique Self.
With this often comes the disruption of past life pattern of the exclusive role of wife and mother, housekeeper and caretaker. The Evolutionary Woman is not seeking to be equal to men in a dysfunctional world, but to join with men and women to participate in the emerging world.
One day her husband Earl was speaking in a talk she had arranged for him. She stood behind a tree and wept. He came to her and said, Darling, why are you crying?
She dared to say, Earl, I want to speak too! Her heart sank. She knew it would hurt him.
He was crestfallen. Then I cant make you happy. Thats true, she said, No one can make another happy.
She told him she had to go forth and tell the story her own way. He said, Barbara, Im the genius. Youre the editor. She nodded, with tears of love, but there was no going back. They didnt know how to grow the relationship as younger people often do now.
The Evolutionary Woman is not merely a co-equal. She is a co-creator, becoming a new archetype. The Feminine Co-Creator. She is incarnating the impulse of evolution as her own passion to create, motivated by the Creator within her to become a co-creator with the divine. She is moving toward the next stage of human evolution as a conscious co-evolutionary.
Barbara sadly had to ask for a divorce. After loving each other, having the five beautiful children, writing and editing his books, cherishing his paintings and securing a major show at the Gallery of Modern Art, she realized that she had to go forth and tell the story herself.
Lt. Col John J. Whiteside entered her life. He was Chief Officer of Information in New York for the Air Force. He loved the book she edited for Earl called The Search is On and spread it to the news media and the generals of the Air Force. In it he had declared: We are being born as universal humans.
John told her he had been totally committed to covering the Apollo program live, sensing it had great meaning, while others were reporting, as he told her, as if they were telling the story of the birth of the Christ child, as to how much the infant weighed and the labor conditions at the Inn.
John said, Now I know why I wanted it to be covered live. It was a birth!
The Evolutionary Woman becomes aware that we are entering a new stage of evolution, not only personal but collectively.
Barbara was alive with the aspiration of a universal impulse of creation, as though she was being born anew.
John told her that if she attempted to make her husband the spokesperson for her mission, she would fail. So she took the radical step as an Evolutionary Woman to break out totally from the role of wife of and mother.
In 1970, as an Evolutionary Woman, she became a new kind of mother.
She told her 9-year-old son that his mother was a pioneer and that she wanted him to come too. He wrapped his little arms around her and said, We know Mom that you love us. You are doing what mothers are meant to do. You are creating a future for your children. I want to come with you.
And so it was, She and Earl separated. John had told her that if she tried to make Earl the voice for her mission, she would surely fail. That was the key. She could not let that happen.
They were divorced in 1970. She moved her five children to Washington D.C. Her sister lent Barbara her home, the Greystone Mansion in Rock Creek Park, as she and her husband, Wayne Barnet had moved to Stanford University where he was teaching law.
Together John and Barbara founded the Committee for the Future in 1970 to bring positive options for the future into the public arena for decision and action.
One day he took her to meet the head of CBS news.
Tell him the news, he said to Barbara. She said, smiling, knowing how strange it would sound to him: The news is humankind has been born into the universe.
He looked at John as if he were crazy. But then he nodded, Its true, he said, but we cant say it.
Why not, Barbara asked. He shook his head.
Gradually they developed a powerful new global Earth/Space Human Development Goal: New Worlds on Earth, New Worlds in Space, New Worlds in the Human Mind. The idea was that after the lunar landing we should have a social lunar landing, guiding the military/industrial complex toward a new evolutionary goal to restore the Earth, free the people, and explore the infinite regions of spirit and the universe beyond our mother planet, as later written up in her book Conscious Evolution: Awakening the Power of Our Social Potential.
They went to meet with Congressman Olin Teague of the Science and Technology Committee of the US Congress and told him about the new Earth/Space goal. He said ruefully, Barbara, I completely agree with you. But we cant do it in the Congress. There is no way for the various committees to come together to look at any long-range goal. YOU DO IT!
Amazed, John and Barbara considered how to do it. They began to speak of the goal to business leaders, politicians, and space scientists. They all agreed it was good but said the others would not get it. She went to see Mr. Rockwell of Rockwell International in his giant office. Mr. Rockwell, she said, Why dont you call together a design team to design the first Earth/Space Human Development program. He looked stricken. He nodded and said, Barbara I totally agree with you, but I wont do it.
Why not?
Because I would lose our defense contracts.
So that was it.
Evolutionary women do not avoid technology, they attempt to guide it. High Love and High Tech merge for the New Culture of Humanity.
Johns son went to Southern Illinois University.
They were invited to a conference there called Mankind in the Universe. Earl was addressing the student body in the arena, which was like a prize fighting ring with thousands of seats surrounding it. Elegantly dressed he was totally out of phase with the ragged students in long hair and blue jeans. His speech did not go over well. He called for heroism in the age of the anti-hero.
Subsequently, Barbara had spent time in small meetings with students; however, it was a time for the radical rejection of society by students. One of the students raised his hand and asked: Why do you want us to continue 25,000 years of failure?
An older man, a professor, arose in towering wrath directed at this question. You would have kept us in the caves! You wouldnt even have dared step into the light.
Barbara began to say in a gentle way, that man had not failed, that we are a young species at a point of transition. Now it is possible for the first time to overcome those terrible lacks such as poverty and disease. Our new tools might transform the ignorance that has forced us into destructive behavior so that we might become a new species
Each one of us is needed.
The longhaired, blue-jeaned, twenty five year old snickered at her. She stared at him and said, Did I hear you snicker?
He sank into his seat.
How dare you snicker at humankind? How dare you condemn the effort of the past? Do you have any idea of the struggle that went into the development of the human species? Barbara spoke like a mother defending her family.
The Evolutionary woman has faith in the evolution of humanity no matter what a mess we are.
The next morning Professor Tom Turner, director of special projects for Buckminster Fuller asked John and Barbara to sit with him on the stage. In the audience were several hundred people who had attended various sessions of the seminars. Earl was there too. Tom looked like a soft, comfortable dolphin. He said, We would like to make a recommendation that Barbara Marx Hubbard run for the nomination for the presidency of the United States on the Democratic ticket. Her role would be to carry the options for the future into the public arena.
She was stunned; yet amazingly, felt it was a good idea.
The Evolutionary Woman accepts the reality that she is needed for the evolution of the whole culture.
Earl was deeply distressed and said it would kill him if his wife ran for president.
So she did not do it for his sake but felt disappointed.
From the Southern Illinois experiences Barbara and John realized that some new process was needed. Whenever they discussed the idea of New Worlds on Earth, New Worlds in Space, or New Worlds in the Human Mind, a businessman, for example, would say, Yes, I get it but the labor unions wont. Or a politician would get it and say that the public would never accept this new potential.
In a flash of insight John decided to put apparently opposing forces in a wheel to actually experience each other directly. He said you couldnt make progress when one person is the speaker and everyone else is sitting in a row. There needs to be a new social structure, he declared.
He drew a new diagram and put functional areas of any social body in the inner circle of the wheel-like pieces of pie facing each other; sections for production, environment, and government, with a coordinating hub in the center where each sector could match needs and resources.
He added a satellite at the growing edge of the wheel to represent new capacities, as in the biological revolution, the physical sciences, psychologies of growth, and information sciences. Finally, there was a far-out satellite for unexplained phenomenon: the intuitive, mystical, and psychic experiences if the human race.
John decided to put a television in every section, with a central open mission control where everyone could see everything at once. People could begin to see themselves as one living organism. Yes, John told her, We can broadcast the meetings live and call it the New News.
Evolutionary Women are inspired by the male creative genius.
She realized he was giving the people their own nervous system. It was the noosphere getting its collective eyes! They called the conference process SYNCON for synergistic convergence. The purpose was to get the broadest possible cross section of people to form task forces in each sector. Each person or group was asked three questions:
What do you want to create?
What to you need to create it?
What do you want to freely give to others?
Then there is the chance for vocational networking. Vocational arousal occurs. People are excited to help each other. Instead of win/lose conflict, the process changes to how much and with whom can you co-create to get more of what you want. People merge with corollary but apparently conflicting functions, like environment and business, looking for common goals by matching needs with resources.
Finally each sector restates its goals, needs and resources in the light of the potential of the whole system. The students removed the walls between sectors of the wheel. Participants met in an Assembly of the Whole. A sense of social love infused the group. When astronaut Edgar Mitchell came in he said: If there had been a spiritual Geiger counter it would have gone off the charts. We called it The All Walls Down Ceremony.
Barbara realized some new form of self-governing process was being born here. This was the beginning of a more synergistic democracy.

What Does Vegan Mean? – Vegan.com

The best way to explain the vegan concept is to quickly define what vegan means, and then look at how and why the word came into existence.
A vegetarian diet is commonly understood to forbid meat and fish, but to allow both eggs and dairy. The word vegan takes this concept to the next level, cutting out every item of animal origin. Vegan refers to anything thats free of animal products: no meat, milk, eggs, wool, leather, honey and so forth. Your sandwich, your shampoo, andyour car seats are examples of itemsthat couldbe vegan.
Veganism carries at least three potential advantages:
Can you become a vegan through diet alone? Absolutely, since, as we will see in the next section, vegan was originally defined purely in dietary terms.
A handful of vegans(sometimes abrasively) insistthat veganism is not merely a diet, but extends into every corner of your lifestyle. In other words, you dont get to join theveganclub until you go beyond food to purge your life of leather, wool, and animal-derived cosmetics. Oftentimes, these vegans are doing the animals a grave disservice by definingthe vegan concept in the most rigid andexclusionaryway possible. These are people would love torevoke your vegan membership card if they find out you havent yet taken your 10-year-old leather winter boots to the thrift store.
The entire question of who gets to call themselves a vegan is annoying and not worth much attention. Rather than think ofveganism as an identity, its wisest to use it as a concept that can inspire you to remove animal products from your life, wherever you can easily do it. And its almost always easy.Oftentimes, its not readily apparent whether a given food or cosmetics ingredient comes from animals, so you can use our animal ingredientslist to familiarize yourself with the most common animal-derived substances.
No matter the degree to which you ultimately embrace the vegan concept, it makes sense tobeginyour transition by emphasizing dietary choices. After all, unless you buy a new fur coat every winter, the overwhelming majority of animal useassociated with your life almost certainly arises from yourfood choices.
To learn more about vegan living, check thesecompelling advantages of a vegan diet, as well as our our information onmaking an easy transition. You can learn everything you need to quickly and easily go veganby reading just one or two bookscheck out But I Could Never Go Vegan!orThe Ultimate Vegan Guide.
Donald Watson coined the termvegan in 1944 in Great Britain. Heres Watson from that year, in the first issue of The Vegan News, proposing that his readers either embrace the word, or come up with a better one, as the basis for a new social movement:
We should all consider carefully what our Group, and our magazine, and ourselves, shall be called. Non-dairy has become established as a generally understood colloquialism, but like non-lacto it is too negative. Moreover it does not imply that we are opposed to the use of eggs as food. We need a name that suggests what we do eat, and if possible one that conveys the idea that even with all animal foods taboo, Nature still offers us a bewildering assortment from which to choose. Vegetarian and Fruitarian are already associated with societies that allow the fruits (!) of cows and fowls, therefore it seems we must make a new and appropriate word. As this first issue of our periodical had to be named, I have used the title The Vegan News. Should we adopt this, our diet will soon become known as a VEGAN diet, and we should aspire to the rank of VEGANS. Members suggestions will be welcomed. The virtue of having a short title is best known to those of us who, as secretaries of vegetarian societies have to type or write the word vegetarian thousands of times a year!
Watsons article was immensely important, but he kept it short, since he only sought to cover what vegan means, and why the word deserved to be coined.
The questions of why and how to go vegan require much more space to properly answer, and over the years these answers have grown fuller and more compelling, as the wisdom of the vegan concept has grown more evident. These topics are covered at length in our Why Choose Vegan? and How to Go Vegan pages.
Finally, you may wish to explore the history of plant-based eating and veganism. If you want to discoverhow veganism went from an obscure World War II-era concept to one of the most influential ideas surrounding diet and food politics, check out A Vegan History: 1944-2010.

Common Themes in Romanticism, The Enlightenment, and the …
Posted: at 3:41 pm
When considering three major movements in world civilization and history; Romanticism, the Enlightenment, and the Renaissance, one theme that runs throughout is that of rebellion. More specifically, this rebellion in all three movements was against past traditions and each of these periods in history was geared toward eradicating old ways of thinking. While the reasons for rebelling against the old social and artistic order vary for each of these movements, the fact remains that all three were successful at changing many aspects of society and all each movement has had an enormous impact on history and artistic expression.
Romanticism was a movement that took place in Europe throughout the latter part of the 18th century. This period in history was a direct rebellion against many of the artistic and societal values of the previous era, which was the Enlightenment. While the Enlightenment movement focused on ideas of reason, rationality, and empiricism, romanticism went the complete opposite direction and explored new ideas about emotions and beauty. The main part of this rebellion was centered around the notion that not everything could be coldly rationalized and that beauty and aesthetics were important parts of existence. Although it was in direct opposition to the Enlightenment, romanticism as a movement did also build off of some of the new ideas that were part of that period such as a renewed interest in the individual. Romanticism was a movement in history that went one step further and began to focus on individual experience as well as the human brainmostly as it related to feelings and personal thoughts. In general, however, it could be easily argued that without the Enlightenment movement there would not have been romanticism, mostly because the former had to exist for the rebellion in ideas to take place.
The Enlightenment, a movement in Western history that came just before romanticism, was itself a rebellious movement that developed out of a prior period that emphasized ideas such as religion. In addition, before this period, there was more weight given to speculations about god and the natural order of things whereas with the Enlightenment empiricism became one of the core ideas. During the Enlightenment movement new rebellious ideas about the nature of mans connection to the universe as well as the concept of the individual with natural rights emerged. These were rebellious notions, especially since before this time people viewed themselves as part of a hierarchy based on many religious and social notions such as class. Science and observation were at the forefront of this movement and many thinkers of the time wished to know the truth through their own experience and process of experimentation and hypothesis. This period in artistic history was a rebellion against the old order because before many people were content to believe in disprovable truths, such as the nature of the heavens or of things such as weather or medical phenomena. Although the Enlightenment sought to keep people rational, this would not be enough for later rebellious movements such as Romanticism, where people began to look behind facts and closer into the individual experience.
The Renaissance was a rebellious movement as well but not in the reactionary sense that the previous two movements in history discussed here were. This is because the Renaissance was more like an explosion in knowledge and learning that caused a huge intellectual shift throughout Europe, especially since it came on the heels of the advent of printing processes. What is, however, rebellious about this period is that it saw so many new ways of thinking and doing things. Artists, writers and philosophers were breaking out of the dark ages" and allowing themselves to experiment with new ideas. Men such as da Vinci were engaging with topics such as art, medicine and technology just as writers were finding new ways to tell stories or represent truths about their time period. What is most interesting about this movement is that it is in many ways the most rebellious since it saw so much change yet much of this change seems almost organic. It was rebelling against anything in particular but the changes were so vast and sweeping that it was the ultimate rebellious movement in Western civilization. Without the many new developments that arose out the of the Renaissance the world might never have experienced successive movements such as those discussed here.
Without rebellion there can be no history; time would just go on without anything to mark off significant or important periods. In these three movements it is possible to detect a string of rebellions that led to major intellectual shifts. It all started with the ultimate rebellion in thinkingthe Renaissance. After the Renaissance, new ideas, particularly about science and experimentation, went on to inform the events of the Enlightenment. After this, thinkers during the era of romanticism picked and chose some of the ideas of these previous movements and developed their own new, rebellious, and unique understanding of the world. In sum, all intellectual movements that influence history are part of a grand chain of rebellion and it seems that this will always be the case if history is any teacher.

The Best Online Master’s in Education Programs for 2018
Posted: August 25, 2018 at 11:43 am
1 Johns Hopkins University RANKING SCORE 80.51 COST % ENROLLED ONLINE 47% LOCATION Baltimore, MD
Although its School of Education wasnt formally established until 2007, this Baltimore university has a century-long history of community engagement through education. As early as 1947, Johns Hopkins has offered flexible, part-time programs to working individuals in surrounding urban communities. An early pioneer in womens education, the School of Education today grants over 500 degrees every year through traditional, online, and hybrid programs, including several online masters of education tracks.
Students earning a masters of education online can select from three programs offered in a fully-online format: education in health programs (MEHP), education studies, and technology for educators. Each concentration is a collaborative effort between the School of Education and another department or organization, such as the International Society for Technology and Education. However, all are built around one core curriculum. Program lengths range from 33 to 39 credit hours, and most students graduate in approximately two years. Some programs have highly specific prerequisite conditions for acceptance, such as the educational studies track, which offers two additional concentrations for members of Teach For America and TNTP. Current corps members and alumni of Teach For America may select the first concentration, which focuses on leadership in education. The 39-credit TNTP program takes approximately two years to complete, and is open to TNTP fellows from any state who are teaching in a school at the time of application. Focused on evidence-based teaching in the medical field, the MEHP concentration is available exclusively to individuals who hold an advanced degree in health-related professions.
Although tuition for most of Johns Hopkins online courses is significantly less than their traditional counterparts, fees for the MEHP tend to be higher. All distance learners, however, are eligible for (and encouraged to apply for) financial aid and scholarships.

The University of South Florida, located in Tampa, has more than 40 years of experience teaching physical education, and its phys-ed curriculum can be delivered online through a combination of reading and practice. The universitys college of education and school of physical education and exercise science created its online masters in education with working teachers in mind. The program functions best when the theories participants learn can be put into practice immediately. Students do much of their studying in virtual classrooms, but USF also expects them to carry out projects in actual schools. The university offers the degree in two tracks: one for individuals with a current teaching certificate and one for those without.
USF structured the 30-credit curriculum of its masters in physical education around a core of eight required classes, including one action-based research project taken as the final class. Students select two electives to round out their program. Most of the required work relates to instructional design and learning assessment, but degree seekers also gain a foundation in research and mentoring. Electives touch on subjects like adaptive phys-ed, sports psychology, sports in society, and grant writing.
Because courses follow no designated sequence, participants can enroll any time and amass credits quickly, moving through the curriculum asynchronously. Students can earn their diplomas in two years by taking two classes at a time. USF designed much of the coursework to be project-based. Students spend time studying on their own, applying their ideas in action projects, and then reporting back on their observations.
USF has three start dates per year. Applicants should have a bachelors from an accredited university with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The university does not require students to submit their GRE or Miller scores. Students who live in the 16 member states of the Southern Regional Educational Board pay in-state tuition. USF also offers an array of other online masters in education, including a special education degree.
