Transhumanism

Having fouled Earth with the works of their modern substitute for religion, science and technology, liberals imagine they can build a perfect world in outer space by means of science and technology that are now more advanced than they were in the past, or so it is boasted. It is what NASA has been about since the agencys inception. The effort has been joined in recent years by billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos with space projects of their own financed by them. However, there is a fly in the liberals ointment.

It is that their planned perfect world would be inhabited by imperfect human beings, men and women who are often irrational, some to the degree that they persist in holding to the preposterous notion that a Palestinian peasant two thousand years ago was God, and all of them subject to emotions which can be unruly and lead to messy situations. This, despite liberalism with its belief in the perfectibility of man, having long ago replaced religion as the core around which the life of society is lived.

Some very rich and powerful men, not to speak of scientists and technologists of like mind, think there is now a solution to the problem (as they see it) of human imperfection. It is called transhumanism. Perhaps you have heard of it. The literature of transhumanism is quite extensive. Heavily funded foundations promote it. References to it show up regularly in mass media. Persons under forty are apt to talk about it at social gatherings when they want to appear to have intellectual interests.

Like Christianity ever since the so-called Reformation shattered the unity of the Faith, sectarian differences exist within transhumanism, but all its adherents believe in, work toward, or otherwise support an undertaking of the kind that could only be conceived in a post-Christian age like ours: melding human beings and computers. The idea is to upload artificial intelligence (A.I.) into men so they will become, transhumanists say, more than human. Christians would say it will make them, if successful, less so, but were not going to get into that here.

Not all Christians would say it anyway. Although most transhumanists are atheists, they recognize the Jesuit paleontologist Teilhard de Chardin as a precursor. To anyone looking for clarity of thought and expression the woolly verbiage of Teilhards writings make them difficult to read, but it is possible to get his drift. It appeals to the kind of Catholics who strive to reconcile truths taught by the Church with science and technology in order to rationalize their dependence on machines to transport them, cool them, make things for them, entertain them, keep them alive in some circumstances, do more and more of their thinking for them.

Being a paleontologist, Teilhard was a great believer in evolution. What he envisioned, decades before the development of the internet and worldwide web, was all machines linked in a network by which, and in which, human minds would merge, all consciousness becoming unified so that it would eventually break through the material framework of Time and Space and arrive at what he called Omega Point the Divine, Christ. Of course at that point human beings would not be as we know them and as they have always existed.

Julian Huxley, the famed British eugenicist, was a close friend of Teilhard, but a non-believer. In a 1951 lecture he presented a secularized version of Teilhard: Such a broad philosophy might perhaps be called, not Humanism, because that has certain unsatisfactory connotations, but Transhumanism. It is the idea of humanity attempting to overcome its limitations and to arrive at fuller fruition

Oh, those irksome limitations! (i.e., irrational beliefs and emotions.)

Many transhumanists see Christian belief in particular as positively threatening. Simon Young, one of their leading thinkers, has written: The greatest threat to humanitys continued evolution is theistic opposition to Superbiology in the name of a belief system based on blind faith in the absence of evidence.

Perhaps the most influential transhumanist thinker is Ray Kurzwell, a director of engineering at Google. A book he wrote in 1999, The Age of Spiritual Machines, is a kind of bible of the movement. The twenty-first century will be different, he said therein. The human species, along with the computerized technology it created, will be able to solve age-old problemsand will be in a position to change the nature of mortality in a postbiological future.

Change the nature of mortality? He means his spiritual machines will live forever, their bodies incorruptible, immune to disease and decay. To acquire knowledge, all theyll have to do is upload it effortlessly to their brains.

Kurzwell calls the point in evolution where this happens Singularity. It is analogous to Teilhards Omega Point.

Some transhumanists, including Kurzwell, talk about resurrecting the dead. Theyll do it, they think, using the DNA we all leave behind. This is where space travel comes back into the picture, though in a way unforeseen by the men who launched NASA: What with the dead being brought back to life and everybody living forever (as spiritual machines), it wont take long before Earth really is overpopulated. Migration to other planets will be necessary.

The billionaire Elon Musk identifies as a transhumanist. Besides developing the Tesla electric automobile, he is best known for Space X, a project for developing reusable rockets with a view to their eventually transporting men and material to Mars for human colonization of the Red Planet. (Since there is no oxygen on Mars, vehicles on the planet will have to be powered by electricity. Hence the Tesla.)

Peter Thiel is another billionaire transhumanist and financial angel to enterprises like Future of Humanity Institute and Singularity University. Although he was given a speakers slot at last years Republican National Convention, he is less well known to the public than Elon Musk. Born in Germany and now a citizen of New Zealand, he was a co-founder of PayPal and early investor in Facebook, is openly gay, a huge fan of Tolkein (he says he has read Lord of the Rings more than ten times), was a member of the Libertarian Party until 2016, and seems to have an unerring instinct for placing himself where power and influence can be had. His membership on the Steering Committee of the Bilderberg Group shows that. So did his being named to the executive committee of Donald Trumps transition team after Trump won last Novembers election (he had contributed $1.25 million to the Trump presidential campaign). It is known that he is a partner of Jared Kushner in one of the latters investment operations. Oh, he also describes himself as a Christian but acknowledges that his beliefs are not orthodox. His financial contributions to transhumanism are weighted toward life-extension and age-reversal projects. (At one point, pre-PayPal, Thiel was a speech-writer for William Bennett when the former drug czar and U.S. Secretary of Education was marketing himself as a morality guru with books like The Book of Virtues and The Childrens Book of Virtues, but grew tired of the job and quit before the public learned that Bennett was a compulsive gambler who had blown millions of dollars at Las Vegas casinos.)

The defense of civilization requires vigilance, but guarding against treachery from within is hard. Western Christian civilization has been undone by leaders who were really Judases, beginning with the priests, bishops and princes who led millions out of the Church at the time of the Protestant revolt commonly called the Reformation. They were followed by the Revolution which first overthrew Christian government in France in 1789 and has continued to unroll so that it does not now exist anywhere. More recently there were the culture wars, which Christians could never have won, not with the weight of modernity against them.

Why? The Judas factor again. Christianity demands sanctification for entrance into Heaven; and self-denial, self-abnegation, self-discipline are requisite to it. Too many modern Christians, faith and belief run out of them, including belief in Heaven except maybe as a place where everybody will go anyway, have preferred self-aggrandizement instead. What they want is all that will make things easier for self or, better yet, enhance it. What could do that to a greater degree than the promise of immortality, especially immortality without pesky emotions and irrational beliefs to mar its perfection?

The trouble is that only a computer could see such a state of things as perfect.

Footnote: Transhumanists argue among themselves as to whether the right of anyone to stay human, especially for religious reasons, should be respected and protected. If these people ever exercise more power and influence than they already do, the argument will probably prove pointless. When most remaining Christians arent Christian enough to face life without the benefits of modernitys existing appurtenances smartphones, processed foods, automobiles, television, air-conditioning, etc., etc. how many will choose Heaven in whose existence they can believe only by faith over the scientific certainty of life in the here and now forever and ever?

The year was 1907. The freedom movement in India was gathering momentum. Its leader was detained by the police. The poet Tagore once again paid him a visit and declared: You have the Word and we are waiting to accept it from you. India will speak through your voice to the world, Hearken to me!

Years ago I saw Aurobindo in the atmosphere of his earlier heroic youth and I sang to him: Aurobindo, accept the salutations from Rabindranath. Today I saw him in a deeper atmosphere of a reticent richness of wisdom and again sang to him in silence: Aurobindo, accept the salutations from Rabindranath!

How does one describe or speak about such a personality? Sri Aurobindo has been called a scholar, a literary critic, a philosopher, a revolutionary, a poet, a yogi and a rishi. He was all these and much more. To have even a glimpse of the true Sri Aurobindo, we have to turn to the Mother: What Sri Aurobindo represents in the world's history is not a teaching, not even a revelation; it is a decisive action direct from the Supreme.

In fact, Sri Aurobindo declared, in no uncertain terms that nobody could write his biography and added: Neither you nor anyone else knows anything at all of my life; it has not been on the surface for men to see.

But he was not altogether averse to this effort and even made corrections when some biographers made the attempt. In the process the veil that hid the divine mystery was lifted a little.

On the first anniversary of September 11, 2001, Barbara Marx Hubbard surfaced as a speaker at the Quasquicentennial Lecture Series on the Future of Higher Education at Texas A&M University. The college newspaper The Aggie Daily quoted Hubbard as stating that the world was at an evolutionary crossroads and that we have equal power to destroy ourselves or create and transform ourselves into something greater. The title of her lecture was A New Evolution for the Future of Humanity: 9/11 a Wake-up Call for the Next Step in Human Development. Hubbard was also quoted as saying, This generation in the next 20 years will be a deciding factor in human evolution. None of us know how to guide a planet through this; there are no experts. She warned that Humanity must realize that we are on the threshold of fulfilling our greatest aspirations but we must consciously take hold of that evolution or perish. Higher Education may be the first step toward that next state on the path toward evolution rather than destruction.1

Barbara Marx Hubbard, however, did have a plan on how to guide a planet through this. Even as she spoke to this Texas audience she was being promoted as one of the featured prophets at an upcoming New Age Prophets Conference in Palm Springs, California.2 The website describing the conference stated that Hubbard was a modern-day prophet who had a spiritual blueprint that could help guide the planet through its present crises. The blueprint was what she had channeled from her Christ and recorded in her book The Revelation: A Message of Hope for the New Millennium. So, while she was telling the Texas A&M group that none of us know how to guide a planet through this, she had already written a book on the subject and was about to give a scheduled talk at an upcoming Prophets Conference entitled THE PLANETARY AWAKENING: How our generation can transform the world. By presenting herself to the Texas A&M audience as a futurist and an educatornot as a New Age leader channeling ChristHubbard was being less than straightforward about her spiritual agenda. She was telling her Texas audience that humanity must consciously take hold of its evolution or perish, but she wasnt disclosing what that really meantspiritually evolve according to the dictates of her New Age Christ or be killed! Accept the New Age/New Gospel teachings of the New Spirituality or be handed over to the selection process. She didnt tell them what she had received from her Christ and written down over twenty years ago: how the defective, self-centered part of humanity that refuses to evolve by recognizing that God is in everyone, will have to be sacrificially killed for the higher purpose of world peace:

No worldly peace can prevail until the self-centered members of the planetary body either change, or die. That is the choice. The red horse is the destruction during the birth process of those who refuse to be born into God-centered, universal life. They cannot go backward to the womb; they cannot go forward to the new heavens and new earth. They must surely die, or change.

It is a free choice. Evolution is good but it is not nice. Only the good can evolve. Only the God-centered will survive to inherit the powers of a universal species. Evolution empowers the horseman upon the red horse to kill that which cannot love God above all else and his neighbor as himself and himself as the son of God.

This act is as horrible as killing a cancer cell. It must be done for the sake of the future of the whole. So be it; be prepared for the selection process which is now beginning.3 [bold added]

We have no choice, dearly beloveds. It is a case of the destruction of the whole planet, or the elimination of the ego-driven, godless one-fourth who, at this time of planetary birth, can, if allowed to live on to reproduce their defective disconnection, destroy forever the opportunity of Homo sapiens to become Homo universalis, heirs of God.4

Meanwhile, Barbara Marx Hubbard continues to gain credibility in todays unsuspecting and undiscerning world. In the spring of 2003 she appeared on a PBS television series entitled Closer to Truth: Science, Meaning and the Future. Introduced as a world renowned futurist, citizen diplomat, social architect, and global politician, Hubbard participated in panel discussions with an astrophysicist, a public policy expert and other renowned specialists.5 As she took part in the discussions concerning ethics and civility and community in the New Millennium, a copy of her book describing the selection processThe Revelationlay on the table in front of her.

In 2005 on the fourth anniversary of September 11th, Hubbard was presented with a prestigious Peace Builders Award in Washington, D.C. Featured speakers at the conference included Marianne Williamson, former news anchor Walter Cronkite and Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich. Hubbards acceptance speech was entitled Peace Through Co-Creation.6 This woman, who described death by the selection process, was now being hailed as a Peace Builder in our nations capital. The prophet Isaiah warned that the day would come when evil was called good and good evil.

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter. (Isaiah 5:20)

Barbara Marx Hubbard has proven through the years that she has powerful connections in the world. Working closely with New Age activists like Marianne Williamson, Neale Donald Walsch, Congressman Dennis Kucinich and countless others, Hubbard has been carefully positioned to play a key role in the emerging New Age/New Spiritualityparticularly in the field of spiritual politics. As Hubbard and her New Age colleagues continue to gain credibility in the world, they will do everything in their power to popularize, politicize and ultimately legalize the ideas and teachings of their New Age God and Christ.

Hubbards Christ warns that only those who are not self-centered or separatewho see God in everyonewill evolve:

[T]he fundamental regression is self-centeredness, or the illusion that you are separate from God. I make war on self-centeredness.7 [bold added]

The species known as self-centered humanity will become extinct. The species known as whole-centered humanity will evolve.8 [bold added]

Sadly, many high profile Christian leaderswith perhaps the best intentionsuse the word self-centered to describe a persons emotional or spiritual state. For example, Saddleback pastor Rick Warren describes self-centeredness as the root cause of all of our problems. He writes:

Self-centeredness is the root of practically every problemboth personally and globally.9

Because Rick Warren describes self-centeredness rather than sin as the root of all the worlds problems, he inadvertently presents a New Age worldview rather than a biblical worldview. In using the word self-centeredness rather than sin he has unwittingly adopted the language and the worldview of the New Age Christ rather than the language of Jesus Christ. For example, he used the words self-centered or self-centeredness fourteen times in his best selling book The Purpose-Driven Life.

Obviously there is no inherent problem with the term self-centeredness, or in using it as a figure of speech. However, to indiscriminately use words that have deep New Age meaningwithout any warning about that New Age meaningis to play right into the hands of the New Spirituality and the New Age Christ. In these perilous times in which we live, it is so important to know how words are being spiritually defined by those who would try to undermine the Christian faith through their schemes and devices and semantic traps. It can be very confusing when evangelical leaders like Rick Warren are sounding a little too much like Barbara Marx Hubbard.

ADAM MICHAEL BREWER: Hey guys. I've got an idea for you called Meditation 101. Let's say you're in the middle of your workday and things get a little crazy, a little hectic. It's starting to feel like it's getting out of control for you. Something you can do is actually get away from it all in a very simple way. If you happen to be in an office that has a door, shut that door, close off as much noise as you can. Perhaps turn off your cell phone. Let's say you don't have an office with a door. Maybe you find a stairwell, maybe you go to your car. But find a place where you can create a little bit of stillness. Once you're there, what I want you to do is kind of sit upright, right? We want to be at attention without tension. Place the palms on top of your thighs, and the palms can either be down, or they can be face up, whatever feels most comfortable for you. And then all I want you to do is shut your eyes and just start to focus on your breath. We want to take a nice deep inhale, and a nice full exhale. A lot of times when we get stressed, what we actually do is hold the breath. And so in this meditation what we're focused on is bringing that breath back to our body, so that we can really fully enliven the brain and get us back to clarity. So it might look a little something like this. Now, perhaps even set an alarm clock for that, or a time clock, where you do two to five minutes if you've never done this type of thing before. If you can do this, I'll tell you what's going to happen is, you'll come back to your workplace and you be able to be a little more responsive, rather than reactive, to all the stuff going on around you.
