Sudden changes forcing business owners across the state to adapt and quickly – Concord Monitor

Posted: March 29, 2020 at 2:42 pm

Across New Hampshire, the COVID-19 virus has taken a heavy toll on a wide variety of businesses, but at the same time created fresh opportunities for some and prompted others to refine their operations in ways that may enhance their futures.

Hardest hit have been the restaurants and bars ordered to close by Gov. Chris Sununu. Other businesses, providing personal services incompatible with social distancing, have followed suit.

Heather Brownell chose to close Salon H. in Gilford.

I have a lot of older clients, she said, and I got nervous.

She said hairdressing is not a necessity, and although some of her regular patrons called for appointments, I closed down to be safe for myself, my family and my clients. Brownell said that social distancing and hairdressing are a bad fit and everybodys health is most important. Questioning why hairdressers and tattoo artists had not yet been ordered to close as of last week, she said Im very shocked.

With like motives, Brooke Swanson also closed Salon 603 in Gilford. She explained that her husband works at Lakes Region General Hospital, and she could not risk exposing herself to the virus and placing him at risk as well.

Closing wont hurt me for two weeks, she said, and after that I will reevaluate.

Like Brownell, she stressed that doing her part in preventing the spread of the virus was her foremost concern.

Although most retailers have continued to operate as the number of customers has dwindled, many have taken steps, especially expanding their use of e-commerce, to continue trading across the widening divide of social distancing.

At the Gilford Country Store, which stocks clothing and novelties evocative of the Lakes Region, Kathy Tognacci, who also operates outlets in Meredith and Wolfeboro, said this is definitely tough.

She said that she has closed her store to walk-in traffic and turned her energy to increasing online sales. Her inventory features the work of some 40 local and regional artisans, whose earnings have also dwindled with the slump in sales. And she regrets having to let go or reduce the hours of employees.

Tognacci said the only positive aspect of her situation was the timing of the dislocation.

For us, March and April are down times, she said, explaining that the bulk of her sales occur in the Christmas season and between May and October, when the population swells with seasonal residents. She said if the crisis stretches into the summer, were in trouble, but there is nothing more I can do.

Michael Hermann, owner of Gibsons Bookstore in Concord, said after cutting his hours of business and the hours of his employees, he closed the store to the public. He said he applied to the New Hampshire Department of Employment Security to supplement the wages of employees through the WorkShare program, which provides unemployment compensation to those whose hours have been reduced by between 10 and 50 percent.

The plan is intended to enable employers to avert layoffs and retain employees. In addition, shifts have been adjusted to enable employees to work from home. We want to keep people healthy, in reserve and our team intact, Hermann said.

Hermann said the store is taking orders by phone and online and filling them by mail and offering curbside pickup.

The virus has solved Concords parking problem for the time being, he remarked, adding, were doing between 50 and 100 mailings a day and seem less like a retail store than a distribution warehouse.

The American Booksellers Association provides a platform for booksellers to post their stock online, he said. Weve filled orders from Washington state, Texas and Massachusetts.

At the Innisfree Bookstore in Meredith, Casey Gerken said she is following much the same strategy.

Were at Mill Falls Marketplace, which has shut down, she said, so no one is coming in. She said she has tailored her shifts to limit the exposure of her employees and, like Gibsons, is taking orders by phone and online. But, along with curbside pickup and mailing, Gerken has put a twist on the bookmobile by providing what she called free front porch delivery within a handful of zip codes.

In Manchester, Fortitude, a health club and fitness center, operated since 1990 by Lisa Maria-Booth, is like several similar facilities that have reached outside the bricks and mortar to provide virtual exercise regimens.

Were live-streaming classes with Zoom, she said, explaining that members sign into the meeting through the app. We had 200 people in the first two days and offer 14 classes a week, Maria-Booth said. Were sitting sweaty and happy.

Since the classes are virtual, she said anyone can join in, no matter where they are. Weve had a guy from Colorado and another from Rhode Island, she said.

The service is free to members and available for a small fee to others.

Maria-Booth said she renamed the business Fortitude eight years ago and now has reinvented it, fulfilling the promise of the christening. The COVID-19 crisis is my time to make sure the community remains healthy in mind, body and spirit, she said.

Streaming live has enabled her to keep her staff employed and her membership engaged.

Well come out of this stronger on the other side, she said.

Mark Guerringue is the publisher of The Conway Daily Sun and among the owners of The Laconia Daily Sun as well as The Berlin Sun, which publishes twice a week.

All three papers are free, generating their revenue exclusively from advertising sales, and altogether profitable. He described the newspaper business as an industry in decline, with lots of marginal properties and anticipated a shock like this accelerates the trend.

The migration of advertising, especially classified ads, Guerringue said, has steadily migrated from print to digital media, sapping the revenue of traditional newspapers.

Its tele this and tele that, he said, suggesting that the pace of migration may quicken in a soft economy and some of the advertisers wont ever come back.

At the same time, he said that from an editorial perspective, newspapers enjoyed more credibility than much of the digital media.

The COVID-19 crisis, Guerringue said, could further erode advertising revenue, as businesses trim advertising budgets to reduce operating costs, fail to pay their bills or turn to digital media. Newspapers, in turn, could find themselves choosing between a print medium with its known, if flagging, revenue stream and a digital platform where the advertising fees are relatively lower. These are big decisions with big risks, he said.

As for manufacturers, at Graphicast, a producer of precision metal components for original equipment manufacturers, Val Zanchuks highest priority is keeping his 25 highly skilled employees in sound health and on the job.

Were booming, he said, running flat out making essential stuff for medical equipment and seeing no sign of stopping. Everyone wants more stuff sooner.

Zanchuk said the firm serves a niche in the product universe by making precision parts in low volumes between 3,000 and 5,000 is our sweet spot for some 10 to 15 customers, and they are all manufacturers of medical equipment and appliances, for which Graphicast is the sole supplier.

He said that while one metal supplier had shut down there are no problems with our supply chain and only a little bit of uncertainty.

Zanchuk said he reconfigured the shop floor to keep his employees eight to 10 feet apart.

Were following all the protocols, he said. We sent one elderly employee home, and were taking everyones temperature.

The shop is currently operating four days a week, 10 hours a day, with a voluntary overtime program. We want to ensure our people and their families stay healthy, he said.

Shortly after Andrew White of Comptus Inc., a maker of environmental sensors and transmitters, was named New Hampshires Exporter of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration, COVID-19 set the world on its heels, knocking his plans for the year for a loop.

Speaking from his garage in Thornton, where the company operates, he said that the year began well as the first quarters financial performance topped the same period a year ago. But, with the appearance of the virus, sales flattened and supply chains were backlogged.

China is a large market for us, White said.

The firms products measure and transmit weather and climatic conditions air temperature, barometric pressure, solar radiation, rainfall and wind speed with a number of commercial and industrial applications. However White stressed that the company was exploring developing markets in countries where both fragile environments and economies are most vulnerable to extreme weather and climate change.

White said the company had planned to mount an expansive marketing initiative in 2020, highlighted by appearances at trade shows in Hong Kong, Canada, Central America, London, Nigeria and the Cook Islands, halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand in the South Pacific.

We booked and paid for the travel, White said, and there are six to nine month delays. Were at dead standstill for the time being.

For the moment White is not alone.

Two residents in Washington County were diagnosed with the disease, The Three Rivers Public Health Department said. Three individuals in Sarpy County and one in Cass County also have tested positive, in addition to a woman in her 30s in Madison County. Four more cases were confirmed in Douglas County, as well.

Resolve to read more and reap the benefits – Helena Independent Record

Posted: at 2:42 pm

It may be tempting to curl up on the couch and turn on the television to unwind, but research indicates that reading is one of the best workouts for the brain. The World Health Organization says that doctors diagnose nearly 10 million new cases of dementia each year. With so many people understandably concerned about any and all cognitive issues related to aging, the search is continually on to find ways to strengthen the mind's muscle. It may be as simple as picking up a book.

According to the online health and wellness resource The Healthy (www.thehealthy.com), reading has been associated with language reception in the left temporal cortex of the brain. When this part of the brain processes written material, neurons begin working hard to transmit information. Research conducted by Stanford University indicated that MRI scans of people who are deep into a Jane Austen novel showed an increase in blood flowing to areas of the brain that control both cognitive and executive function.

When the brain is working efficiently, it may be less prone to some of the issues that can cause a decline in memory and brain function. Research published in the journal Neurology found frequent brain exercise through reading lowered mental decline by 32 percent.

Of course, the benefits of reading extend beyond the physical. Literary fiction can help people be more empathetic. Getting lost in a book and the characters' stories makes others more relatable. Reading has the potential to help a person understand what people are thinking, offers research published in the journal Science.

Posted: at 2:42 pm

CLEVELAND While gyms and fitness studios throughout the state have closed, theres still a lot of ways to get up and move.

Mary Sorma, the head trainer at Tremont Athletic Club, said since Governor DeWine ordered them to close their doors, theyve received a lot of inquiries about at-home workouts.

We've had a lot of people reach out you know, just cabin fever, and dealing with anxiety right now, she said. Knowing that exercising is an amazing way to boost their immune system, so they're saying I want to keep up with my routine and I want to maybe even start exercising more now that I have this time at home.

Sorma and other trainers have been holding daily online classes for people via Tremont Athletic Clubs website and on the gyms Instagram account @tremontathletic

Movements that you can do at any level and anywhere, she said.

Theyre joining a slew of other fitness studios offering virtual classes and workouts.

Orange Theory Fitness posts an at-home workout every morning on its website and on its instagram @orangetheory

You dont need to be a member to access it.

If yoga is your thing, Core Power Yoga adds new classes weekly to its website

They will be free until, at least, the end of March.

Peloton has started offering a free 90 day subscription trial of its at home workout app

FItOn is another app that is free offering workouts like dance, HIIT, and yoga.

The Freeletics app offers body weight workouts for free.

Sorma said you dont need a gym to get a good workout in, you just have to be creative.

You can use your counter top in your kitchen, put your hands on there, do some incline push ups. You can use your body weight. You can use your couch, find a step, a table, do some step ups do a squat going down to it, she said. Use things around your house. If you don't have weights, use gallons of water, gallons of bleach, a broomstick to do some mobility or do some stretches for yourself, as well.

Or, just get outside and get some fresh air.

Motivation at Its Best! – RiverBender.com

Edwardsville - Edwardsville Community Unit School District schools are doing all they can to stay connected to their students. Outside of the typical e-Learning that is occurring daily, the teachers and staff are finding creative ways to keep their students motivated and engaged.

At Edwardsville High School, the English Department has put together fun good morning videos and primary school teachers are reading bed time stories to their students using Zoom. Another teacher video conferenced her students at lunchtime so they could eat together. Some teachers are taking attendance by having their students find the best meme of the day regarding E-Learning and share it with others in their class through a secure learning management system.

But one of the most creative ways District 7 teachers are letting their students know that they are thinking of their students is with Neighborhood Parades. These parades are typically led by the school mascot and teachers follow, in their cars, of course, in decked out cars with motivational sayings. With big waves and even bigger smiles, the parade visits all of the neighborhoods in the school attendance area. The families are notified in advance so that their children are prepared to wave back, blow kisses and hold up their own motivational signs for their teachers. The love between the children and teachers is so apparent, said Cathie Wright, Director for Curriculum and Instruction. No one is pleased with our current situation, but our students and teachers are using every opportunity to show each other how much they miss being in the classroom.

New London man motivating youth through online reading – theday.com

Posted: at 2:41 pm

New London Hello everyone, this is Mr. Booker. And Im really excited about the book were about to read today.

Its how longtime educator, motivational speaker and New London City Council member Kevin Booker Jr. begins each installment of his newest video series, "Read and Learn with Mr. Booker," on Facebook at bit.ly/MrBookerFB.

The series is part of Bookers one-man effort to make the lives of others just a bit easier during the coronavirus pandemic, when kids are out of school. Joined by a cast of stuffed animals, Booker said his goal during each book reading is simple: motivate students to continue their learning.

I believe its crucial to keep our students engaged and reading while they are at home. They get a little restless and we have to continue motivating them on the importance of education, of reading and writing, he said. I want everyone to have equal access to a high-quality education and way of life. Reading opens doors for children to be successful and productive members of our community.

Seated alongside Leo the sloth and Olivia the owl, Booker used a fireplace in the empty dining room of the Green Room Restaurant on Bank Street as a backdrop for a recent reading of I Am Enough by Grace Byers. For the older children, he has been reading chapters from the "Crunchy Life" series by Glen Mourning.

Green Room owner Jonai Phillips was impressed and said Booker was making the rounds downtown and had stopped in to ask about how the restaurant is faring and what he could do to help.

I think its great, Phillips said. I mean, no one knows how long the kids will be out of school. The kids are probably driving their parents crazy. Kids are always on the internet anyway and theres a lot of weird stuff out there. What hes doing sounds relatable. He has really good energy.

Bookers settings change daily and have included his car because, he tells viewers, you can read anywhere.

His introduction to each book typically starts with a hand washing and beat boxing, or vocal percussion, something he said hes been doing since age 6, a creative outlet to help him connect and engage with others.

Booker said along with the educational aspect of the readings, he is offering himself as a role model for community youth.

He grew up in a working-class neighborhood of Hartford in what he said was a loving, multigenerational home where parents, grandparents and members of his community served as his role models.

He said he sees New London in a similar way, a place filled with leaders invested in the community, and that helps motivate him. When asked about who in the community inspires him, he ticked off a list of more than a dozen people, from school board President Regina Mosley to former City Councilor Martin Olsen, calling them devoted, selfless and committed.

Booker has been an educator since 2002 and taught middle school and high school, is an adjunct professor at Asnuntuck Community College and volunteers at New London elementary, middle and high schools. Before schools canceled classes, he was regularly reading to third-graders, and performing morning announcements at Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School. Hes a guest lecturer, member of the Anti-Defamation League and board member of the Interdistrict School for Arts and Communication. He is the founder of Booker Empowerment LLC, teaching public speaking and leading diversity and leadership workshops.

Booker has made himself known to the New London community through initiatives like Ride with Councilor Booker, meeting a group at the New London train station for a ride on a SEAT bus through the city to hear ideas and concerns.

He has performed a third-shift ride-along with police, donned turnout gear with firefighters and completed Disaster Institute Training with the local Red Cross chapter.

The social distancing part of the coronavirus scare is an especially cruel mandate for Booker, who under normal circumstances is as quick with a friendly embrace as he is with his smile.

I never thought in my lifetime I would experience anything like this. Its hard, he says with a laugh. Its just the world were living in.

Hes continued his outreach in the virtual world, releasing an ongoing series of videos spotlighting people during Womens History Month, such as Chien-Shiung Wu, known as the first lady of physics, and former University of Connecticut basketball superstar Diana Taurasi. Hes done similar videos for Black History Month.

He is planning a regular series highlighting small New London businesses and continues to post motivational videos that include rise and shine and positive bedtime prayers.

What else can he do? His most recent Facebook post asks Need Support Shopping? Hes asked anyone over the age of 65 in need of groceries or other household items to call him. Hell do the shopping.

There is a quote my uncle shared with me when I was younger that I live by, When you see a problem, that is why God created you.

Three ways to stay motivated and get things done while at home – UT Daily Beacon

Posted: at 2:41 pm

You may be unmotivated now that you are a student at Zoom University, location: your bedroom. However, this does not mean that it is time for your drive to falter.

Although we are forced to do our classes online, we cannot become lax about our school work. The semester is still going, full speed ahead, and for most classes, the syllabi have not changed very much in regards to the amount of work we are doing.

This means that it is imperative that we get ourselves together in order to actually accomplish things while at home. Here are a few suggestions on how to better your chances of getting back to somewhat of a normal school schedule.

Get into a routine

When we were at school, we had a set routine in place. We went to our classes physically and had certain things we did at specific times of the day. However, now that we are at home, while our classes may be at the same times, we likely have much more free time.

That being said, it will not do us or our mental health any good to sit in bed all day just doing school work or sleeping.

This may be the only things we feel like doing, but we have to take the initiative to get into a routine. This will add some variety to the day and hopefully make it so that the days dont all just lump together.

I suggest waking up at a reasonable time, as you probably already have to do this because of classes, and setting aside specific times to do things.

For example, from 9-12 you may do your school work, and then from 2-3 you may decide to take a walk around the neighborhood or do some form of exercise, and later from 4-5 it may benefit you to do something that isnt school related to enrich your mind such as reading or making art.

Avoid the bedroom

Although this is easier said than done, Ive found that I am much more likely to get things done at home if I stay away from my bedroom.

In our minds, our bedrooms are where we sleep and are in a restful state. This is not the type of environment that we need to be in when trying to be diligent in doing our school work.

If possible, going to a different area of the house will help when it comes to motivation. You will no longer be in the sleep mindset and will be more likely to do your work rather than be tempted to take a nap.

Also, if youre unable to go to a different room, at least try to get out of bed. If you have a desk, that is obviously a prime spot for school work, but if not, even sitting on the floor is better than sitting in bed.

Get dressed

This one may seem the simplest, but it can end up being the hardest of all.

It is incredibly easy to stay in our pajamas all day now that we dont have anywhere we actually have to go. However, getting dressed will nine times out of ten make you feel better and more motivated to get things done.

Once again with the sleep mindset, although we are comfortable in our lounge clothes, they cause our minds to believe that we are going to sleep soon.

Your clothes do not have to be uncomfortable, but simply dressing in what you would have worn to regular in-person classes will have a substantial effect on your motivation and drive toward school work.
