Doing strength-based yoga poses, like Chair and Warrior II, can help you build and maintain muscle mass.

If you're not too familiar with yoga, you might think it only makes you more flexible, but the truth is, incorporating yoga into your daily routine can increase your strength too.

"Mostly yoga is better known for its flexibility and balance," says registered yoga teacher Ashish Painuly. "But incorporating strengthening poses in [your] yoga practice tones muscles, connective tissues and hypermobile joints all over the body, which in turn, reduces the risk of injury [when practicing] advanced yoga poses."

In fact, a July 2011 study published in the International Journal of Yoga shows that a regular yoga practice helps not only relieve stress and anxiety, but it can also help build muscle mass and maintain strength, which can protect you from conditions, such as arthritis and back pain.

If you're looking to gain more strength from your yoga practice, Painuly recommends beginners start with two to three yoga sessions a week, ranging from 30 to 60 minutes depending on your fitness level. However, if you're a seasoned yogi and have a consistent practice, Painuly recommends incorporating strength-based yoga poses in your regular routine for four to five days a week.

"Some poses can't be perfected in one day they need consistent practice, where it's common to repeat the pose several times," Painuly says. "Practicing strengthening poses regularly helps to maintain a healthy and natural body posture, prevents the loss of muscle mass and improves bone density, which reduces the risk of osteoporosis."

Ready to get stronger? Here are seven yoga poses that will help soothe your body and mind, strengthen your muscles and leave you feeling accomplished at the end of your practice.

Baba Ramdev’s yoga act on elephant draws lawyers’ notice, saying it was an act of cruelty to the animal – India Legal

Posted: at 11:57 am

without comments

New Delhi (ILNS): A lawyers notice has been sent to yoga guru Baba Ramdev and the Director of Elephant Rescue Center Churmura (Mathura) by advocates of Agra district for an act of cruelty against an elephant on which the Baba was trying a yoga posture. The Baba fell down during his act and has been reportedly hurt, but the notice was for the well-being of the elephant.

Advocates Narendra Sharma, SP Bhardwaj, Gagan Sharma, Rajveer Singh and Rakhi Chauhan have sent this notice jointly, considering the act as cruelty against the animal under the Wildlife Protection Act.

The lawyers said that millions of people follow the yoga practices of yoga guru Ramdev, the founder of the Pantjali Yoga Peeth. The yoga guru has violated the Wildlife Protection Act by doing yoga on a creature that has place as a symbol of speech and religion.

The government prohibits the use and demonstration of organisms/animals kept in the special category (and exploitation) for commercial activity. There is a provision for punishment and fine on the violation. The director of Elephant Rescue Center Churmura has also not discharged his duties. Animal cruelty has been promoted, which is a dangerous message for wildlife and society.

The notice warns against taking legal action if there is no proper reply within seven days.

What Is Face Yoga and Does It Work? – Everyday Health

Posted: at 11:57 am

without comments

You know that exercise keeps you looking and feeling your best. But can extending workouts to your face have similar effects?

Possibly. Thats the idea behind face yoga, a growing trend that claims to deliver skin-lifting effects without surgery, needles, or even expensive skin-care products. While many people have been shelving their usual facials and procedures in favor of staying home and minimizing their risk of contracting COVID-19, some have turned to face yoga as a DIY approach to younger-looking skin.

RELATED: 5 Reasons a Skin-Care Routine Is Good for Your Mental Health

First things first: Face yoga doesnt involve the usual shavasana or Downward-Facing Dog poses youre familiar with from your yoga practice. Yoga is just a catchy way to say facial exercises that move the muscles on your face into certain positions kind of like yoga for your body. The idea is that performing these exercises will keep your face looking toned and young, lifting areas that are sagging and drooping, and trimming years from your visage.

The aim is to create a moment of self-care where you improve blood circulation for a healthy glow and reduce stress and tension in your face, says Elsa Jungman, PhD, a scientist, microbiome expert, and proponent of facial yoga based in San Francisco.

Most people hold tension in their faces, whether through facial expressions or too much time in front of a screen. All these daily activities cause patterns in how we use our face and the specific muscles we recruit, Dr. Jungman says. This is why we want to focus more on releasing and softening our faces to let go of these patterns and any held facial tension.

RELATED: Is Blue Light Harming Your Skin Health?

Facial yoga is said to help counter those effects. According to two popular programs, Happy Face Yoga and Face Yoga Method, face yoga helps to:

Some dermatologists say theres some truth to these claims. The goal of face yoga is to increase the blood and oxygen supply to your skin, which improves the life of the cell, says Deborah Longwill, DO, a board-certified dermatologist atMiami Center for Dermatology in Florida and cofounder ofDoctor's Daughter Skincare. This leads to glowing and rejuvenated skin.

Lucy Chen, MD, a board-certifieddermatologist with Riverchase Dermatology in Miami, also says you could reduce visible signs of aging by toning the muscles through specific facial exercise training.

It should be noted, though, that there isnt much research about facial yoga or facial exercises. The most promising and most-often-cited support comes from research published in March 2018 in JAMA Dermatology. In the study, a group of participants ages 40 to 65 performed facial exercises for 30 minutes a day for eight weeks. Then for 12 more weeks, they practiced the exercises three to four times per week. At the end of the 20 weeks, the study participants saw improved upper and lower cheek fullness. They also looked younger at the end of the study, with two dermatologists estimating the participants average age was 50.8 years old at the start of the study and 48.1 years 20 weeks later.

You shouldnt expect drastic changes, though. The JAMA Dermatology study authors noted that their participant sample was small and the results were modest. And keep in mind that face exercises wont alter the texture of your skin, according to Harvard Health, though moving and stretching scarred skin through face yoga can lessen the appearance of scars.

RELATED: 6 Yoga Poses for Glowing Skin

Leaning on face yoga as your go-to anti-aging regimen may backfire, too. Some experts say contorting your face in these ways can actually lead to more wrinkles.

Many facial wrinkles for example, crows-feet, laugh lines, and forehead wrinkles result from repetitive facial muscle activity such as frowning or smiling, Dr. Chen says. Some question whether routinely pulling your face and exercising those muscles could create wrinkles and fine lines.

Think of Botox, which works by freezing the muscles in the face in order to minimize the appearance of wrinkles. With face yoga, youre doing just the opposite, and if done too aggressively or incorrectly, Chen says facial yoga may actually accelerate signs of aging.

Not to mention, sweaty hands carry dirt, oil, and bacteria that can clog pores and cause breakouts. In fact, the American Academy of Dermatology Associationrecommends not touching your face to help prevent acne.

Want to give it a try? Here are five exercises used in the JAMA Dermatology study. Jungman recommends practicing for five to 10 minutes each day to start, eventually working your way up to 15 to 20 minutes per day as part of your skin-care routine and self-care practice.

‘Outdoors, animals, yoga all good things’ – The Times

Posted: at 11:57 am

Marsha Keefer |Beaver County Times

SOUTH BEAVER TWP. A group of yoga devotees unrolled their mats in preparation for a class Saturday morning.

Are there any animals that you might be afraid of? Anybody afraid of chickens or turkeys, goats, sheep? asked Lisa Marie Sopko.

Its not the usual introduction to a yoga class, but this wasnt a usual class.

In fact, most of the people who attended the nearly 45-minute Yoga With the Animals session came not only for exercise, but to interact with animals thatgrazed in a bucolic pasture at Kindred Spirits Rescue Ranch.

Sopko, with husband John, owns the 20-acre, nonprofit farm thats been a sanctuary for neglected, abused, or abandoned animals for more than a year.

Proceeds from the first-time event will go toward building a multi-use barn to serve as temporary emergency shelter for humane officers statewide to house hoarded or neglected animals or as a pop-up shelter for animals needing housing due to natural disasters.

Animals were introduced gradually with Kevin, a Zebu steer; Zoe, a miniature horse; Saylor, a Nigerian dwarf goat; Scout, a donkey; Bluebell, a Nubian goat; and Pepper, a turkey among the first.

Im not exactly sure how its going to go, Sopko told participants. I expect that theyre (animals) going to be very interactive.

And she offered cautionary advice, especially when yogis engaged in downward and upward dog poses: Keep your eyes out for the animals that have horns as they could interpret those positions as a challenge.

If you see something running toward you, just stand up, she said.

Not to worry. The animals were respectful and decorous. As more were introduced mostly goats they were more interested in nibbling weeds, grass and low-hanging tree leaves on the pastures perimeter.

But Kevin was curious and sidled next to Marcy Rudolph of Baden.

It was pretty awesome, she said, as the cow, rescued last year at a horse auction, bent its head toward her.

She and niece, Sarah Westover of South Beaver Township, both practice yoga and love animals.

We dont really get farm life very much so its just nice to do something thats really unique and seemed really fun, Rudolph said.

Westover said she knew it was the right decision as soon as they arrived: Several animals in an enclosure ran to the fence to greet them.

This was great, Rudolph enthused. I would totally do this again.

Would definitely do it again, echoed Westover.

Natosha Durr of Chippewa Township came with her 10-year-old daughter Alianna. Both practice yoga.

Alianna has seen YouTube videos of yoga with goats.

Shes been wanting to do a goat yoga so this is a good mix of the two, Natosha said.

Ill probably have a goat or animal on my back, Alianna said hopefully.

The pair enrolled because its a good cause, said Natosha.

The event was a family outing for Brandy Woods of North Sewickley Township and her daughter, Maura, 4; mother Sherry Eiler of Darlington; and sister Candice Sprecker of Baden.

Maura loves animals, her mom said, and exercises around the home with us.

Im trying to support her, Eiler said of Sopkos animal rescue efforts. Shes a neighbor and I try to support her.

Its just a lot of fun watching them move about, Woods said of the animals. Well do as much as we can do to support what she (Sopko) does. Its really a great thing.

As yoga instructor Kristen Hannan of Pittsburgh guided participants through various poses, roosters crowed, horses whinnied, sheep bleated, and donkeys brayed.

Outdoors, animals, yoga all good things. Thats what we want, said Jen Stratakis of Robinson Township, reflecting on the pastoral peacefulness.

Yoga is moving your body in time with your breath. Its physically healing, its mentally calming, and adding the animals to it is like pet therapy, if youre an animal lover, of course. Theres soothing presence…Its fun having them interact with us as were moving our bodies and enjoying this beautiful day.

Leah Younkins of Moon Township thinks animals can sense the benefits we get from yoga the calming and it helps to calm them.

Elyse Mancini Ross of Brighton Township practices yoga but has never done so with animals.

I love yoga, I do lots of yoga, but I wanted to connect with the animals, she said, just to have the feeling of peace come through you with the animals, just connected with nature and the universe. Yoga just sweetens the pot. It feels really good.

Beth Newman of Mars was especially moved by the days event. She and Sopko have been friends since their middle school days. Newmans 20-year-old daughter Gabby, who aspired to be an equine veterinarian, spent the summer as an intern at Kindred Spirits Rescue Ranch.

On Aug. 5, three donkeys escaped a pen. In an attempt to herd them back, Gabby took an off-the-road vehicle in pursuit. Somehow the ATV rolled over on nearby Cole Road and Gabby was killed.

The days hence have not been easy for Newman, but shes bolstered by Sopkos plans to build the new barn and dedicate it to Gabby.

Lisa and I, were both people of faith and we both think that there needs to be something positive about it (Gabbys death).

It has to be Gods idea and Gods timing, but something good is going to come out of it and we think it would be wonderful to build another barn so she can help more animals, said Newman.

This whole farm she (Gabby) just loved it. I can just see her here. Everywhere I go is just an image of her so every time I come here its kind of like being with her, said Newman, as tears welled in her eyes.

I havent cried for a few days and when I say cry, this is just tearing up, she said. She loved every single animal. She knew all their names and their histories. She was the only one who could tell the difference between all the sheep.

As for the new barn being dedicated to her daughters memory, Newman said I cant imagine anything Gabby could want more. She just loved animals.

Sopko hopes to break ground this month on the new barn estimated to cost $62,000. So far, about $30,000 has been raised. She said 39 people registered for Saturdays event that cost $25.

Im pleased with the turnout, she said. Its wonderful. I had expected maybe 15 to 20 people.

Sopko said shed love to repeat the event again and again and again. I think its going to be something thats so great for the people as well as the animals.

HOW TO DONATE

Those interested in donating to the new multi-purpose barn to be built at Kindred Spirits Rescue Ranch in South Beaver Township that will serve as temporary emergency shelter for humane officers statewide to house hoarded or neglected animals or as a pop-up shelter for animals needing housing due to natural disasters can do so via website, Facebook or check.

Visit the website at kindredspiritsrescueranch.com or Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/KindredSpiritsRescueRanch.

Checks, made payable to Kindred Spirits Rescue Ranch, can be mailed to 500 Hodgson Road, Darlington, PA 16115.

Benefits of yoga and meditation The Elm – Washington College Elm

By Jensyn Hartzell

Sports Editor

Yoga and meditation have become increasingly popular over the last few years. People of all ages have taken up these hobbies for various reasons.

Yoga is a combination of stretching, calisthenics, and breathing exercises that works muscles and can reduce stress. Meditation focuses on mental strength and sharpness along with breathing exercises.

While they are two different activities, meditation is commonly used in yoga.

According to Yoga Basics, a website dedicated to yoga, yoga was developed by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in Northern India over 5,000 years ago.

Today, yoga classes and teaches can be found everywhere, and most likely with a waiting list. It has become so popular that there are unique classes with animals, partners, and children.

According to the Harvard Medical School, Hatha is one of the most popular styles [of yoga today]. Hatha yoga focuses on pranayamas breath-controlling exercises followed by a series of asanas yoga postures and ends with savasana a resting period.

Asanas include poses like downward dog, locust, and bridge. By holding your body in these positions for a set amount of time, it strengthens muscles and improves physical balance.

When holding yoga poses, it is recommended to focus on breathing and attempt to relax your body as much as possible. This is where yoga meets meditation.

The Harvard Medical School also said that yoga has been proven to lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar along with losing weight.

I began doing yoga during quarantine because I was bored, but now I do it almost every day, said sophomore womens volleyball player Courtney Maxwell. It really does reduce my anxiety and make me feel refreshed.

Anyone can pick up yoga, all that is required is some open space and a yoga mat. There are plenty of online videos and apps to help newbies get started.

Meditation does not require any equipment, but a brain and some time. It is best known for reducing stress in daily life and continuously keeping people positive.

Meditation can last for as little as five minutes or as long as hours. A person is required to sit still, close their eyes, and control their thoughts.

According to Healthline, meditation can also enhance self-awareness, lengthen attention spans, reduce age-related memory loss, potential fight addictions, and improve sleep.

Also according to Healthline, there is focused-attention meditation, which is a concentration on a single object, thought, sound, or visualization, and open-monitoring meditation, which encourages focusing on self-awareness of personal thoughts, feelings, or impulses.

Both yoga and meditation are easy to incorporate into daily lives. It is completely up to you how much time and energy is put into these new hobbies.

They are also easy to begin. There is no need for background information or amazing athletic ability; both hobbies were created to better yourself at your own pace and level.

By including meditation and yoga in a daily routine, a person will see positive results in both their physical and mental state.

Five meditation and yoga techniques to calm your soul and help you sleep better – The Indian Express

By: Lifestyle Desk | New Delhi | Updated: October 15, 2020 8:00:05 pm Training your mind to focus on pleasant imagery helps you to actively move away from negative thoughts and emotions, inducing a feeling of tranquility. (Source: Pixabay)

It is a well-known fact that most people suffer from sleep-related issues. In the last few months, as the pandemic has assailed, people have been all the more anxious and sleep-deprived. The daily stress of handling a job, taking care of personal responsibilities, planning for an uncertain future has taken a toll on many lives, also causing some physical and mental health issues.

Mindhouse, a mental wellness service offering platform providing a variety of guided meditation sessions and techniques stresses on the importance of adequate sleep. It says that over a period of time, insufficient sleep can take a heavy toll on the immune system, potentially setting you up for a number of different illnesses and ailments.

As such, the platform suggests five simple meditation and yoga techniques to help induce a state of deep calm; read on.

Progressive muscle relaxation

This exercise has been used by doctors since the 1930s to treat insomnia and to provide symptom relief for conditions like headaches and digestive disturbances.

ALSO READ |AYUSH ministrys Yoga Break protocol resumes

The technique involves tensing and releasing various muscle groups, one after the other, based on the premise that the physical relaxation induced by PMR can lead to a calmer state of mind, and in turn, better sleep.

Body scan meditation

As the name suggests, this technique is centred around meditatively scanning your entire body, to identify sensations of pain, or discomfort. This helps increase awareness of our own body, allowing us to develop greater insight into the causes behind these uncomfortable and unwanted sensations.

Visualization

Arguably the most expansive technique on this list, visualization is only limited by your own imagination. Training your mind to focus on pleasant imagery helps you to actively move away from negative thoughts and emotions, inducing a feeling of tranquillity, and significantly enhancing your overall mental well-being.

ALSO READ |Chronic stress has been hypothesised as potential risk factor for hypertension

4-7-8 breathing

Also known as Ratio Breathing, it is one of the many different rhythmic techniques that help put your mind and body in a relaxed state. The basic concept involves inhaling through the nose as you count to 4, and then to 7 and then exhaling as you count to 8.

Mindhouse recommends starting off with 4 cycles of this pattern and slowly working your way up to 8.

Yoga positions

There are various restorative yoga postures that help relieve stress, such as the reclining bound angle, the wide knee childs pose, and the reclining hero pose, which can set you up for a good nights sleep. They help diffuse tension thats accumulated in various parts of the body, such as the hips and hamstrings, and help to improve blood circulation in your feet.
