Writing Center hosts relaxing write-in event to destress – North Wind Online

Rachel Hauch creates paper snowflakes to hang up as decorations for the write-in on Tuesday and Wednesday. The write-in is designed as a time for students to work on their final papers in a fun and productive environment, but also as a way to inform students about the location of the Writing Center.

Katarina Rothhorn, Features Editor November 30, 2021

As the 2021 Fall Semester comes to a close and professors assign final papers, the Writing Center receives increased traffic and students looking for feedback on their many essays. To help relieve some stress from frantically writing students and provide a fun space for them to work on their projects, the Writing Center is hosting a write-in after hours.

Students are going to need help with exams and sometimes during exams, the Writing Center can be super busy, Lena Ostergren, a tutor in the Writing Center, said. [We wanted] to have an event where people can feel comfortable and if they need to ask quick questions while theyre writing something they can.

The Writing Center Write-In will offer hot chocolate, cookies, games and music for people interested in working on their papers, discussing thesis ideas or just hanging out. The event will start at 6 p.m. and run until 9 p.m. on both Tuesday, Nov. 30 and Wednesday, Dec. 1.

We really just want it to be a welcoming space where students can get projects done. I know sometimes its hard in dorm rooms and even in other public spaces at this time in the semester, Rachel Hauch, assistant director of the Writing Center, said. So we thought itd be fun to invite students to come here to work on those projects, and then hopefully theyll want to come back next semester.

The Writing Center normally allows for drop-in tutoring sessions, but in this last week before finals, they see people on an appointment based schedule only. Making an appointment can be daunting for some students, especially if they have never been to the Writing Center before.

I wanted to just have a space where the Writing Center could be there because sometimes its hard to get the motivation to sign up for an appointment, Ostergren said. I think people will need help and it will be nice to have a comforting environment for that help.

This event is also a way for the Writing Center to improve awareness of their location and services. After COVID-19 forced tutoring appointments to be online, many students were unaware of the Writing Centers presence on campus or simply did not want to put in the effort of editing their paper with another person in a virtual setting.

Now that classes are back in person and the Writing Centers somewhat hidden location in 111G Harden Hall is open, they are hoping to attract more students.

[We are] raising awareness for the location of the Writing Center where its at and letting students know that were here and were here to help, so hopefully next semester, theyll feel more comfortable coming back, Hauch said.

While there will be a few tutors available at the write-in, the goal of the event is not to provide intensive help with students essays. If anyone is looking for more one-on-one assistance with their paper, they can make an appointment by emailing [emailprotected].

The write-in is designed as a comfortable work and hangout space with free snacks and other people to bounce ideas off of or get feedback from.

Its gonna be a super fun event and be very welcoming to anybody, even if you are not even working on writing and just want to come in and sit down and grab some snacks, Ostergren said. You can just talk and chat about different stressors and itll be a good time.

While holiday music and cheer fill the radio waves and shopping malls in the weeks leading to the end of the year, stress and procrastination dominate college campuses. Research papers and group projects that have been distant thoughts all semester have due dates only days away and the familiar, unsettling feeling of anxiety rolls over campuses like thick coastal fog.

Although no substitution for hard work exists, we have techniques that can help make your final weeks of the semester a success.

The first step in making it to winter break is reviewing your syllabi and taking inventory of what assignments you have left to complete. Whether you like to create a digital checklist, a highly detailed entry in your bullet journal, or a collage of post-its, write out all outstanding work and organize by the assigned due date.

Often getting started is the hardest part of accomplishing any looming project. By knowing exactly what you have to do and by when, youre already one step closer to being done. Focus on accomplishing one task at a time rather than the list in its entirety and be sure to treat yourself while you cross assignments off your list.

Everyone can benefit from a little help here and there, especially during the holiday season. Dont be hesitant to speak up or seek the resources that you need.

If youre concerned about an upcoming exam or need additional help in understanding a concept from class, schedule a free tutoring appointment with tutors from the Student Success Center.

If you have anxiety about going back home for the winter break or simply just need to get something off your chest, schedule an appointment with the Counseling Center.

If you need help finding sources for final papers or want another set of eyes on your essay, contact the librarians at Payson Library or schedule an appointment at the Writing Center.

Carve out time from your study schedule to practice some self-care. Whether you make time to be with the people who bring you joy, participate in a Board event, or snuggle in for a relaxing evening of baking and movies, the most important thing is that you do it.

Exercise, sleep, and proper nutrition are also key to self-care but are often overlooked during this time of year. Get some fresh air, go for a walk, and take in the scenery before you head home for break.

Cramming for exams can only accomplish so much; your brain needs rest. Aim to get at least six hours of sleep before final exams or project presentations to help you feel and perform your best.

Remember that finals week is only a small fraction of time in your life. You will make it through, just as you have every other challenge youve faced. Dont be too hard on yourself; youve got this.

Mental health and the holidays – Seymour Tribune

Posted: at 1:44 am

Mental Health America of Jackson County ALIVE Coalition members include, from left, Kate DuBois, Melanie ONeal, Lin Montgomery, Molly Marshall, Heather VonDielingen and Becky Bujwid.

Elvis Presley sang about having a blue Christmas and actually, its perfectly normal to feel that way.

It can be the over-booked social calendar, deadlines at work, the loss of a loved one, dreary winter days, shopping or other things that make us feel down.

According to the American Psychological Association, 38% of people surveyed said their stress increased during the holiday season, which can lead to physical illness, depression, anxiety and substance misuse. The reasons given: lack of time, financial pressure, gift-giving and family gatherings.

To make matters worse, the National Alliance on Mental Illness reports 64% of individuals living with a mental illness felt that their conditions got worse around the holidays according to mcleanhospital.org

To address mental health and the holidays, a few members of the ALIVE coalition gathered on Monday at the Community Agency Building in Seymour to discuss the topic.

The coalition was formed in the fall of 2018 under the umbrella of Mental Health America of Jackson County. ALIVE stands for awareness, listening, informative, vigilance and engaged. The group typically meets once a month.

The common denominator of the group is the desire to reduce the suicide rate in Jackson County.

Thats what brought them all together, said Melanie ONeal, executive director of Mental Health America of Jackson County.

Besides ONeal, other mmbers include Becky Bujwid with Centerstone; Lin Montgomery, public health coordinator for the Jackson County Health Department; Molly Marshall and Heather VonDielingen with Purdue Extension Jackson County; Emily Sommers, a counselor at Jennings County High School; and Kate DuBois, an assistant principal at Emerson Elementary School.

At our last Zoom meeting, Becky was saying how the holidays can trigger a lot of memories for people and the last year-and-a-half has been so hard on our community and our whole world because of COVID, ONeal said. Theres going to be a lot of families celebrating their first Christmas after either COVID-related deaths or other deaths in their family.

ONeal said just start by reaching out to your circle of family and friends and asking what they are doing this holiday season.

Life gets so busy that sometimes we might not stop and think about someone who is widowed and lives alone and their children are grown or live out of state, ONeal said. Even talking to friends and family about church services that are going on over the holidays is a great way to reach out to meet other people in your community and have some connectiveness.

Around the holidays, people can also feel overwhelmed by everything they need to get done, so ONeal encourages people to dissect their day.

If you are feeling like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders, think about what you need to have done, lets say between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and write it down, she said. Lets get to 1 oclock then we can reassess what you need to do between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., then youre doing baby steps and can check things off on your list to make it feel a little less overwhelming.

She went went on to say, just listening to some relaxing music can be therapeutic, just having it on in the background while you are doing something else can make a difference.

Montgomery said mental health is part of public health and they are there supporting and encouraging people and part of that is emergency preparedness.

If people need a reason to go talk to the lady up the street, we like to encourage neighborhoods to make that link to see if those individuals might need something in an emergency, Montgomery said. Such as a weather emergency, like if theres a lot of snow predicted, do they have heat, food, do they need their drive shoveled or anything else.

Marshall said making our way through a health pandemic, its especially important to take good care of ourselves now and through the holiday season.

The days are getting shorter, so its more of a challenge to get outdoors during the daylight hours, she said. But going out for fresh air is always beneficial, even when its cold out.

With the proper jacket, hat and gloves, you can go outside and take a 10- to 20-minute walk. Afterwards, youll be surprised how good you feel, Marshall said.

When its cold and dark out, its a little more tempting to sit around in the house, but around this time of year, a fun activity would be to park your car, walk around neighborhoods and look at Christmas lights.

She said disconnecting from social media is a good idea sometimes too, because more screen time often leads to us comparing ourselves with others and it takes away from our in person connections.

While taking a break from social media and the internet, take time to read a magazine or a book to see things from another perspectives as a kind of escape, she said.

Bujwid said theres so much pressure to have the perfect Martha Stewart Christmas.

I decided a long time ago that I did not have 50 people that work for me that could do all the decorating in my house and do all of the baking for a perfect Christmas, she said So I decided to just do the best I can and that was a real revelation for me.

Bujwid said she deals with children and families and theres the added pressure of buying gifts and getting the latest games or toys.

Luckily weve got the Shop with a Cop program and the Sertoma Christmas Miracle helping to help ease some of that pressure for the families who are trying to get their kids everything they want, she said. Sometimes families just have to tell the kids they cant afford some of those things, but they can have something else instead.

This time of year can be especially hard for people that live alone and people might not realize that, Bujwid said.

Maybe ask around or think of someone you know who is by themselves that you could ask over and could use some family time, she said. Just that time of togetherness can really mean a lot, just to be included.

For anyone struggling with depression this holiday season or just not quite feeling like yourself, there is a complete list of mental health providers in Jackson County listed on the Mental Health America of Jackson County website, mentalhealthamericajc.net. There are also a variety of mental health screenings that can be accessed through the website.

Brooke Burke Shares Her Top Wellness Tips for Relaxing and Feeling Her Best – Prevention.com

Posted: at 1:44 am

without comments

At 50-years-old, Brooke Burke recognizes the importance of prioritizing mental health and wellbeing. These days with a fitness program (including an app that is chock full of guided workouts and meditations), shes easing into a more open world post (or during) COVID-19. Her top takeaway from the past 18-plus months? The importance of self-care.

I think its been a real conscious shift thats been necessary, to be honest, she says of the ways in which the pandemic has changed the pace of the world, forcing us all to slow down. We still have to figure out how to balance that stress and stress of that togetherness again.

Burke, a certified breathwork teacher, a paid spokesperson for supplement brand Tru Niagen, creator of wellness app meets fitness program Brooke Burke Body (BB Body), and mother of four, leans heavily on her self-care ritual to manage stress.

My favorite part is taking five minutes in the morning to set yourself up, to crush your day, to balance stress. Taking a little me time, she says. With her new holiday program, Burke is emphasizing mindfulness, even sharing some meditative playlists to just to kind of go inward and go inside and take a moment for yourself. Thats a big part of mindful fitness for me, and everything that we do on my app, is connecting those dots body, spirit, soul, she tells prevention.com. We have to take time for ourselves.

The one thing, besides meditation, that she credits with keeping her mind clear during these stressful times? A simple soak.

I create home spas, which is...epsom salts and flowers from the garden. I light a candle, I know how to check out of my world on a stressful day and sort of reset. So I think for women thats a really really important part of just managing all of the things that we do.

She doesnt waste her time with luxe, overly produced bath salts, either. Instead she opts for simple over-the-counter Epsom salts. I buy basic generic inexpensive Epsom salt, its the same stuff. And then Ill put lavender drops or eucalyptus drops in my bath, Ill light my favorite candles.

Pure Eucalyptus Oil USDA Organic Essential Oils

$11.95

Dermatologists and physical therapists have long lauded Epsom salts for their restorative properties. While Epsom salt is a type of salt, its very different from the stuff you sprinkle into your soup. The salt, scientifically referred to as magnesium sulfate, is known for its healing properties. When dissolved into a bath, it can help relax muscles and gently exfoliate the skin, Ana Cristina Laureano, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist at Scherl Dermatology in New Jersey, previously told Prevention.

At the end of the day, Burke says these Epsom soaks (which she does weekly), can really change the way you go about your day. Its about music lighting, the warmth, and the recovery of Epsom salt, and you know Epsom salt will also reset your mood, she says. Im a big believer in that reset.

Im a big believer in that reset.

And it's clearly working for Burke. We can't wait to add a weekly soak to our self-care routine rotation.

The 20 Best K-Pop Albums of 2021 – PopMatters

Posted: at 1:44 am

without comments

K-pop is a very busy niche to keep up with as there are seemingly countless active groups and soloists, and some even put out more than one EP or LP per year. The odds that a year will go by without good music in K-pop are very low. With so many releases, there has to be somethingfor everyones taste.

From experimentation that entices the interest of casual listeners to formulaic repetition that K-pop fans love, 2021 was a year with a lot of satisfying K-pop. Among all that talent, its only right that our list of Best K-pop albums (which includes EPs and LPs) features no less than 20 works by K-pop idols and a few R&B or indie artists that are changing the landscape for pop as well.

SHINees Lee Taemin may have gone into an artistic hiatus (due to his compulsory military enlistment), but he left listeners good music to enjoy until hes back. Advice is less impressive than Taemins previous solo works, but its still a great example of the unique finesse the singer and dancer brings to K-pop. Taemin proves his versatility in tracks like the doo-wop, R&B Strings, and the synthpop Sad Kids; and his qualities as an entertainer in Advice.

When a songwriter and music producer is also a recording artist, theres always a song that they cant decide if they pitch it to another artist or keep for themselves. For example, the classy Unnatural, recorded by the group WJSN, was penned by a songwriter and music producer who also releases her own music: Song Heejin. But judging by her solo debut, Soda, Song has saved some goodies for herself too.

For example, tracks like Question Mark and Get Outta My wouldve also sounded amazing if recorded by a girl group such as MAMAMOO or Red Velvet, respectively. But we can only be happy that Song Heejin recorded them and released Soda. Shes really good singing soft contemporary R&B (Dirt), as well as in upbeat tracks (Dancing in the Moonlight). Tylenol is the apex of the songs experimentation. And the funky, smooth homonym track is one of the most refreshing summer releases of 2021.As a songwriter and as a recording artist, Song Heejin is a name to keep an eye on.

Bambi, a solo work by the EXO member Baekhyun, is a sultry and elegant set of R&B and neo-soul songs. Baekhyuns vocal range almost steals the spotlight from the beautiful melodies. The falsettos in Bambi and All I Got will give you goosebumps. Baekhyuns sentimentality is on the edge in Cry for Love: Every time that I cry / My tears dont ever dry, he sings. Baekhyun reaches great heights with his voice in Bambi; but in spite of how intense these songs are, theyre still smooth and provide a relaxing feel. Its a short EP, yet its rich with emotions and executed to perfection.

The sixth album by singer and songwriter Younha, End Theory, is an emotional piece of art. Highlight is, indeed, one of the highest points of End Theory, and Stardust is a dreamy pop ballad that can make you feel as if youre floating adrift in the universe. The new-age-inspired song Here is so majestical that it deserves to be experienced at an opera theatre or ballet. Younhas soft, high-pitched vocals imprint the right emotion that each composition deserves, making End Theory a graceful experience.

Sometimes an introduction to a song is so good that its a waste that it isnt a full track. When that happens, the following songs must keep the listener just as interested. Thats the case in Border: Carnival, the second EP by the boy group ENHYPEN. Intro: The Invitation is a gloomy alt-rock / new wave track that sets the scene for the trip ENHYPEN takes on a disturbing yet exciting trip, with few moments to breathe in and relax (like the cute Not for Sale).

Border: Carnival is, most of the time, a seductive fusion of R&B, dance, moombahton, and reggaeton. The tracks in between the first and last dont have the same dark edge as the bookenders. Still, its music that grabs you by the neck and drags you to deeper depths: the emotional turmoil in Drunk-Dazed, the burning desire in Fever, the warmth from falling in love in Not for Sale.

Trap beats and rock guitars combine in the production of Mixed Up. It creates contrast with the airy Outro: Wormhole, whose lyrics are metaphorical of ENHYPENs journey through different states of consciousness. Though its the last track, the lyrics hint at new beginnings: And when we wake at this tunnels end / What vision awaits?

Coping with Seasonal Affective Disorder During Another Pandemic Winter – Healthline

Posted: at 1:44 am

without comments

As the days get darker and temperatures dip in most areas of the country, many Americans are beginning to feel the effects of seasonal affective disorder, or SAD.

SAD is a type of depression that typically comes on in the fall and winter months. It leads to mood changes and other symptoms of depression.

Its an annual decrease in mood and can lead to feeling lethargic, difficulty sleeping, poor appetite, and weight loss explained Adam Borland, PsyD, a psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic. Some people experience agitation and anxiety, and it really stems from the change in weather, the lack of sunlight, and the cold dreariness in certain areas of the country.

SAD is quite common. The National Institute of Mental Health reports millions of Americans have SAD, though many might not know they have it.

Experts say, as we approach another pandemic winter, seasonal affective disorder is once again being compounded by COVID-19 anxiety for many Americans.

If were already feeling down, then we add to it the prospect of another winter in which [COVID-19] is still an issue, thats a recipe for depressive episodes and for heightened anxiety and panic, Borland said.

Most Americans are still reeling from the events of the past year and a half. The staggering death toll of more than 773,000 people has left countless grieving families in its wake.

Theres also the lasting effects of social isolation, financial upheaval, and the collective stress of being on edge for so long.

And while the United States is in a much better position than last winter with the COVID-19 vaccine and current rollout of booster shots, the uncertainty of where the pandemic is heading can make the mental anguish seem never-ending.

Especially with the ambiguity of where we are now as a society, it can be hard to know where we have to continue to be cautious as compared to where we can be more at ease than we were last winter, said Jessica Stern, PhD, a clinical psychologist at the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at NYU Langone Health.

In a vicious cycle, SAD can make it even more difficult to cope with COVID-19 anxiety.

Seasonal affective disorder can lead to a sluggishness or lowness that can even further decrease motivation to engage in healthy habits, like eating healthy, staying active, and managing stress, Stern said.

If youre feeling the double whammy of seasonal affective disorder and pandemic anxiety, experts recommend the following coping mechanisms that can help ease symptoms of both.

Having some semblance of a daily routine is very important, especially when things seem overwhelming, Borland said.

What I mean by that is having small, achievable goals to work toward each day, he explained. So for someone who, as soon as they open their eyes in the morning, they start to feel overwhelmed by all the demands on them, identifying those small goals and crossing them off their list can make a big difference.

These goals can be as simple as taking 10 minutes out of every morning for deep breathing and stretching.

Thats not a huge goal, but its something to cross off the list, Borland explained. So you attended to yourself for 10 minutes, and now youre a bit more charged to start the day.

Phototherapy, or light therapy, is a recommended treatment for seasonal affective disorder. It involves sitting or working near a light therapy box, which mimics natural outdoor light.

Borland encourages his patients get a little creative with it.

I have one patient who uses their light therapy and combines it with listening to some relaxing music, and they visualize that theyre at the beach, he said.

Studies show that physical activity can improve mental health and overall well-being.

As I tell my patients, exercise doesnt have to mean going to the gym or taking a fitness class, Borland said. Its really just any type of physical activity that you can get, [like] taking a walk, doing some exercise at home, using a quick YouTube workout video those all count.

Surround yourself (in-person or virtually) by people who support you, inspire you, or are just fun to talk to, Stern said.

If youre feeling stressed or overwhelmed, lean on that social support system to help you get through tough times.

Probably one of the most important coping tools is not keeping things bottled up, but sharing with your loved ones how youre feeling, Borland said.

A proven way to help ease symptoms of depression and anxiety, mindfulness meditation encourages people to slow down their thoughts and breathe deeply.

What that does is really help us focus on the present moment, Borland explained. We are so good at thinking about the past and worrying about the future, that we often miss the present moments.

If you have trouble controlling your thoughts and getting into a meditation practice, Borland recommended starting with small goals.

The expectation is not that you turn your brain off, but I like to think of it in terms of volume, he said. So if you feel like your brain is at a nine or a 10, in terms of volume the expectation is that doing some deep breathing is just going to turn it down a little.

The expectation is not that youre going to go from a nine to a one. And if thats the expectation, thats where people get frustrated, he added.

Having plans for enjoyable activities can help ease day-to-day stresses.

While COVID-19 has limited options over the last year and a half whether thats because of fears of becoming sick or financial strain even making small plans can be helpful.

Plan fun activities for yourself, regardless of how small they may seem to you, Stern suggested. This could include doing a wine tasting from home, creating a weekly movie and dinner night, or building a fort in your living room.

Theres a reason it feels so good to rewatch your favorite sitcoms or revisit beloved holiday movies each year.

Movies, TV shows, stand-up comedy segments that you know and love can bring a sense of comfort and familiarity, Stern said. Have a few of your favorites on standby whether that means holiday classics that you love or a TV series you can binge.

You can even pair it with your favorite recipe or takeout food and amp up the nostalgia, she suggested.

‘Startup Wife’ Satirizes Tech Culture And Boardroom Sexism From Experience – NPR

The Startup Wife, by Tahmima Anam

What happens when a woman conceives of and creates an app and then her husband becomes the face of the startup that monetizes it? That's the question Tahmima Anam set out to answer in the satirical novel, The Startup Wife.

The novel centers on Cyrus and Asha, who co-found a social media platform that customizes ceremonies and rituals for people who aren't religious. Asha came up with the idea, but it's Cyrus who's credited as the visionary behind the company. The novel was inspired in part by Anam's own experience as a tech outsider who unexpectedly became immersed in the world of startups.

"My husband and I were going to be academics. I mean, I was going to write novels and he was going to be a professor of Chinese philosophy," she says.

Then Anam's husband invented an app and launched a music tech company. "And I feel like the whole journey has been one of discovering the world of startups, sort of from an outsider's perspective," she says. "And that's exactly what Cyrus and Asha do."

While writing the novel, Anam had fun imagining a range of far-fetched tech startups including a company called "EMTI" which sends subscribers an empty box which they then mail back with unwanted items. She even had a friend create a website for the fake company.

"Occasionally, when I've been talking to people in the startup world, as a joke, I will just give them the website address and not tell them that it's fake," Anam says. "For some reason, [EMTI] has been the one that people are most interested in investing. That's kind of like a little joke that I sometimes like to play on people."

On the company Asha and Cyrus create, which helps design rituals for nonreligious people

Tahmima Anam is also the author of a trilogy of novels set during and after the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.

The platform is called "WAI," ... which stands for "We Are Infinite." And what it is, is a way for people to connect via rituals. So you go on the app and you tell it the things that mean something to you, your favorite cartoons, the food that you love, what's meaningful to you, important experiences that happen to you in childhood. And then you ask for a ritual. You say, "I want to get married." For instance, in the book, there are these two classicists that get married. So they have a Homerean wedding ceremony and that's what the platform gives you. And then you get to connect to other people via those rituals. So it's kind of an anti-social media [company] "social media" in the sense that you're not talking about superficial things. You're connecting via the rituals that give your life meaning. ...

I'm not a religious person myself, but I can see how having a kind of organizing construct can be so relaxing in the world where there are so many uncertainties and giving people something to hold on to, giving [them] these kind of moments of punctuation in your life where you're looking forward to something, the baptism of your child, a bar mitzvah. ... So I thought, wouldn't it be great if we could give atheists the same kind of scaffolding that religious people have?

On her protagonist Asha making her husband the CEO, which makes him kind of a prophet

There is a real irony there, because people are obviously joining WAI because they want an alternative to organized religion, and then there they are worshipping a male visionary messiah, [a] prophet, basically. And I think the other irony is that Asha ... who creates the app and who does all the coding, and it's really her idea, when it comes down to it, she says to Cyrus, "No, you be the CEO. I'm just a coder. I'm going to sit in the background," and she lifts him up and she thinks to herself, towards the end of the book, "I literally created a platform that makes the entire world worship my husband." She does that. And this is an exaggeration of what we all sometimes do when we love someone, we lift them up. But she just does it to an absolutely intense, kind of huge, massive, exaggerated scale.

On the way some tech founders see themselves as visionaries

I think the tech world promotes the idea of the male visionary. If you think about all the people who are now basically in charge of our lives, it's mostly a series of white men, whether it's Elon Musk who's going to take us to the moon and create all the cars that we're going to be driving in the future, or Mark Zuckerberg. I mean, we may not worship them as people, but we're so dependent on them. And when it comes to male founders raising money when they're in front of the venture capitalists, I do think that there is a strong bias towards the male visionary CEO.

On being on the board of her husband's startup

I've been on the board of the company from the very beginning, and I obviously had no experience of the boardroom. And I really enjoyed thinking about writing this book the entire time that I was on that board, because one of the great pleasures of being a writer is that you get to put all of your experiences somewhere. So anytime someone cut me off or ignored me or didn't take me seriously, I thought, I'm going to write that down. So it was a way of processing that experience, which was very new for me and sometimes quite challenging, because the other half of my life was sitting quietly in a room and writing books, which had nothing to do with the startup world until I wrote this book. ... Imagining this novel was a great way of processing the actual experience I was having, both sitting on the board watching people interact with me, but also watching the changes that my husband was going through as he went from being a sort of quiet academic to being everyone's boss.

On calling out sexist and racist language when she hears it

There is so much sexist language embedded [in the business environment.] ... So, for instance, men will commonly say, "Well, they're already pregnant, they might as well have the baby," when they're talking about someone who's so invested in you, they're just going to give you more money or something like that. Or they'll say, "We should open the full kimono," which is both sexist and kind of racist. ... I think we need to be able to say out loud that language means something and a joke, even in the most kind of flippant way, is a representation of our actual values. So I hope that I can be more like Asha and less like the me that was just silently filing things away from my book.

On growing up in Paris, New York, Bangkok and Bangladesh

If you had asked me this, I don't know, 30 years ago, I would have said it was really awful because I could never maintain friendships for more than a few years. I think looking back, it was such a formative experience for me. And I would say the experience that was the most meaningful was when we moved back to Bangladesh. ... We were living in all these countries and [my parents] kept saying to me, "We're just going to go home. We're not going to stay here. We're not going to stay in New York. We're not going to stay in Paris. We're going to go home. We're nationalists. We have to go back and do something for our country." And when I was 14, we did exactly that. We went home and my father started an independent English daily newspaper, not politically affiliated, which was very unusual at the time. ... So it was very tricky to not ever be in one place for very long. But I think it certainly had a lot to do with why I became a writer.

Sam Briger and Seth Kelley produced and edited this interview for broadcast. Bridget Bentz, Molly Seavy-Nesper and Beth Novey adapted it for the Web.
