Jerry Sloan Should Not Take the New York Knicks' Coaching Job
Posted: March 20, 2012 at 1:37 am
COMMENTARY | What have we learned from the Mike D'Antoni experiment with the New York Knicks?
Coaches who can't handle media and fan pressure to win a championship now can not sit on the sideline of the basketball team in the biggest NBA market.
Also, if the star player, in this case Carmelo Anthony, doesn't get what he wants, New York is ready to make any change to make his life better. Anthony didn't want to do what D'Antoni asked him to do on the court, so he didn't. Instead of the front office backing their coach, it took sides with Anthony; the player they made a blockbuster trade with the Denver Nuggets to acquire right around this time last year.
This led to D'Antoni leaving the Knicks. If he didn't quit, he surely would have been canned in a matter of weeks.
Ex-Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan has been mentioned in filling the shoes left by D'Antoni that Mike Woodson is temporally sizing. If the former long time coach of the Jazz (1988-2011) took the job, the same kind of situation would happen.
In my mind, Sloan is a far superior coach to D'Antoni. He has won 1,221 games for a winning percentage of 60% compared to D'Antoni's 388 wins and 53%. Sloan has coached in far more overall games than D'Antoni so it isn't fair off of numbers, but Sloan was never surrounded in the controversy D'Antoni has been in his shorter career.
Not only was D'Antoni in the fire with New York for most of his three and a half seasons there, but he was roasting in Phoenix (2003-08) when the Suns didn't play any defense and couldn't get to the finals with arguably a top five point guard to ever play in the NBA: Steve Nash.
Even though I think Sloan is a better coach and would improve the Knicks from their current slumber, Sloan would get the axe or quit in a short time span as well.
Sloan didn't quit because of fights or quarrels with his two superstars - Karl Malone and John Stockton - but left Utah in 2011 when Deron Williams shared words with him. In a press conference around the time he resigned from Utah, Sloan said "I've had player confrontations for as long as I've been in the league. My energy is not as high as it used to be."
If Sloan didn't have the energy a year ago with a small market team, how is he going to have the energy now as coach of the gaudy and well followed Knicks? He wouldn't.

End of an era: Stansbury retires

STARKVILLE -- After 28 years in college basketball -- including 22 years at Mississippi State University, 14 years of which he served as head coach of the men's team -- Rick Stansbury decided to do something else with his life.
"It's time in my life to start a new chapter (and) step away from coaching," Stansbury, who will continue to work at MSU in an as-yet undetermined capacity, said Thursday. "And I'm ready for it."
On March 13, 1998, Stansbury took over the head coaching position at MSU. And he proceeded to become the became the school's all-time wins leader, the ninth-winningest coach in league history, with 11 post-season appearances.
"A lot of coaches can stay at one spot too long," Stansbury said. "I don't want to be one of those coaches. I want to be able to do things and make decisions to step away from this, when it's my decision."
MSU Athletic Director Scott Stricklin and Stansbury both stressed its was the Bulldogs coach's decision to walk away from the program, with two years remaining on his contract, which was scheduled to pay him between $1.4 million and $1.5 million per season.

ANN ARBOR: Life experience laid groundwork for Entrepreneur of the Year (with video)

John Rotche, president of the Belfor Franchise Group headquartered in Ann Arbor, believes that life is made up of a series of building blocks, which, in his case, raised him to the level of being named the 2012 Entrepreneur of the Year by the International Franchise Association.
Before reaching that distinction, Rotche's days involved some heavy lifting that spanned from recovering fully from an injury that left him a quadriplegic at the age of 18, to establishing two successful national franchises from a business that began out of his daughter's bedroom.
"It's the highest honor in franchising. What I'm probably most proud of is the class that I'm with -- Fred De Luca, founder of Subway; Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino's; Bill Marriott," Rotche said. "The tough thing is that only my name is on the trophy. We have over 200 franchisees' names that should be on that. We have the corporate staff whose names should be on that. So, I accepted the award on behalf of them."
One reason Rotche believes that he and his team won the award is for the success of his two franchises: DUCTZ, the nation's largest air duct cleaning and indoor air quality company with more than 175 locations, and a national service team of world traveling contractors to clean mechanical systems, particularly after major disasters; and HOODZ Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning, which began in 2009 and now has more than 150 locations.
Another reason Rotche believes he was recognized is for starting "Franship"-a mentorship program for the IFA to assist people working in the field of franchising.
The Ann Arbor resident's ability to overcome adversity was tested early in life when a football injury left him unable to walk and accept the spot he had earned on the University of Michigan's football team. However, Rotche said that experience opened up an opportunity for him to be part of the coaching staff under the late Bo Schembechler.
