Pru Life UK income jumps 33% in 2011

MANILA, Philippines - Pru Life UK, the Philippine life insurance arm of London-based Prudential plc, showed a 33% growth in 2011, boosted by increased sales.

In a statement, Pru Life UK said its total gross premium income in 2011 reached P10.4 billion, from P 7.8 billion in 2010. Total gross premium income is the premium income earned (first year, single and renewal years), gross of reinsurance, for the period.

"Our improved performance was brought about by recruiting more financial advisers and increased productivity. We recruited over 1,000 agents in 2011. Furthermore, there was significant growth in the business brought to us by brokers," Pru Life UK President and CEO Antonio De Rosas said, in a statement.

De Rosas also attributed the companys continued growth to its aggressive recruitment strategy, training and coaching programs for financial advisers. The company also launched innovative products such as the Pru Link Exact Protector, a revamped version of one of Pru Life UKs bestselling unit-linked or investment-linked products, the PruLink Exact Plus.

Meanwhile, Prudential plc said its Asian life insurance business became the single largest contributor to the group International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) operating profit, accounting for 34% in 2011.

Asian life insurance excluding Taiwan has grown from 12 per cent of Group IFRS operating profit in 2007 to 34 per cent in 2011. The nominal amount has nearly trebled in three years from 257 million to 709 million, said Prudential plc Group Chief Executive Tidjane Thiam. The heart of our strategy remains Asia, where our positive momentum has been maintained in 2011, with total IFRS operating profit up 30 per cent and a cash remittance to the Group of 206 million. Asia is generating both growth and cash and our focus on the fast-growing markets of Southeast Asia continues to pay off, he said.

Prudential plc, through Prudential Corporation Asia, has life insurance operations in Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, India, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Thailand and Korea.

Olmsted Falls star Steve Gansey enjoying D-League coaching stint at age 26

Posted: at 2:03 am

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Former Olmsted Falls High School coach Pat Donahue is not the least bit surprised his former star player, Steve Gansey, is the head coach of the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA Development League at the age of 26.

"He was always a student of the game," said Donahue, who is teaching but no longer coaching at Olmsted Falls. "He was always interested in how the game was played, why things were done. Steve was the kind of kid who was always into basketball. He was one of the guys willing to work on his game. He always wanted to put more time in. He has taken that right to the coaching ranks."

Gansey returns to Ohio on Wednesday night when the Mad Ants, 11-31, visit the Canton Charge, the Cavaliers' D-League team that is 24-18.

"I knew I was going to be a head coach at some time in my life," Gansey said. "If I said I knew it was going to be at 26, I'd be lying to you. It's a great opportunity, and I'm having so much fun."

After starring at Olmsted Falls, Gansey played at Cleveland State. When Mike Garland was fired, he transferred to Ashland and played for Roger Lyons. He'd already figured out his playing career wasn't going to last much longer, and he wanted to have fun and experience the college life.

He got an internship at Priority Sports and Entertainment in Chicago, run by agent Mark Bartelstein, who represented Steve's older brother Mike Gansey, now a seasonal assistant in basketball operations with the Cavs. A stint at USA Basketball followed before Gansey took a job as an unpaid volunteer to long-time Fort Wayne head coach Joey Meyer two years ago. He was promoted to the first chair last year when former Cav Vitaly Potapenko took a job with the Indiana Pacers. Then he took over for Meyer, the former DePaul coach, when the team started 5-10 this season.

"The best part is that I'm in the head coach's shoes," he said. "You don't really know how you're going to do things until you put on those shoes and become that guy. It's a lot different sitting six inches to the left or the right.

As young as I am, anything that I'm going to endure in my life in the next couple years, I have this to look back on. I will make mistakes, but hopefully not the same mistakes. It has been a great learning experience and a great opportunity.

I would like some more time and some more opportunity to work with these guys. I just wish our season wasn't ending here pretty soon."

Gansey is drawing on everything he learned from Donahue, Garland, Lyons and Meyer. Donahue, he said, taught him how to compete.

Adams: LO wrestlers thank coaching staff

The Live Oak wrestlers would like to thank their coaches, as only they can, for an outstanding 2011-12 season.

The Acorns crowned the schools first CIF state champions in senior Amy Fearnside and sophomore Isaiah Locsin, who also won Central Coast Section titles, placed a program-best fourth in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Tournament while producing three individual-title winners Tyler Pederson, Johnathan Robles-Rials, Locsin and won a share of a third straight dual-meet crown in their first season as part of the BVALs elite Mount Hamilton Division.

This, from a team that took sixth in the C level West Valley Division four years ago, led Live Oak athletic director Mark Cummins to write, We are very proud of our wrestling program at Live Oak. Our coaches do a tremendous job with our student athletes both on and off the wrestling mat.

The programs success is as much a credit to the wrestlers as it is to coach Robert Fernandez and his top-flight staff of Armando Gonzalez, Armando Gonzalez Jr., Martin Gonzalez, Adin Dueas, Dan Locsin, Papa Mitch Collins, Wade Katsuyoshi, Raul Alvarez and Tumendemberel Zuunbayan.

The following are excerpts edited for brevity from letters written by the Live Oak wrestlers to their coaches, thanking them for the many, molding experiences they shared together.

I would love to thank all the coaches for the wonderful year. Without all of them, we wouldnt have done nearly as much as we did. (Coach Locsin) made everyone stronger with his Yoke Fit. Armando Gonzalez Jr. and Adin Dueas just graduated from wrestling in college, so they brought even more technique.

Coach Armando Gonzalez treats everyone on the team as if they were his own kid. He works hard to ensure that were the best we can be in wrestling and in life. The team is blessed to have a coach like him.

Coach Robert Fernandez is fun and cool, but when it comes to business, he is all seriousness. I want to thank him for a great high school career.

- Tyler Pederson, senior co-captain

College of Charleston coach Bobby Cremins retires

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) Bobby Cremins said this time he is stepping down for good.

Nearly two months after taking a medical leave of absence from the College of Charleston men's basketball team, an emotional Cremins announced Monday he was retiring from the game.

But he struggled to get the words out.

The coach's voice cracked and he fought back tears as he addressed players, friends and administrators on the floor of TD Arena, the Cougars' home court.

''With the blessings of my family, my team, staff, friends, and the College of Charleston, I have decided to retire as our coach,'' Cremins said.

The 64-year-old Cremins announced on Jan. 27 that he would miss the rest of the Cougars' season and later said he was physically exhausted. Cremins went on an indefinite medical leave of absence but said his condition was not life-threatening.

College of Charleston athletic director Joe Hull said at the time that he planned to speak with Cremins over the next few weeks to determine it the coach will be out even longer.

''It was unfortunate what happened to me in late January. I didn't like what happened and I'll never know why,'' Cremins said. ''Our bodies sometimes send us signals, so we have to listen. The silver lining is that my staff, led by Mark Byington, my team, my school, they had my back and they responded in a special way.''

Ten days after his initial announcement, Cremins said on Feb. 6 that he ''had no gas'' and that his players knew. ''They could feel it.'' He added that while his energy level wasn't where it needed to be, he was ''definitely feeling a lot better'' at that time.

Under Byington, the Cougars finished the season 19-12 and were knocked out of the Southern Conference tournament in the first round for the first time since joining the league in 1998.

Bayne brings experience to coaching Titans

Posted: at 1:37 am

without comments

Brett Bayne has been around baseball most of his life. He began playing baseball at the age of 5 in his hometown of Palatine. He even plays as an adult in a competitive league in his hometown during the summer. So it was no surprise that when a coaching position opened on the Titan baseball staff, he jumped for it.

Bayne, a Western Illinois graduate and current English teacher at MRHS, has been the JV coach for the Titan softball team for four years and compiled a record of just below .500 in his four years. Several of his players made the jump to varsity as underclassmen and that can be accredited to his coaching.

I am big on hustle. I will bench a kid if I feel they are disrespecting the game by not hustling, Bayne said. Im also a big team guy. We win as a team and we lose as a team.

Bayne joins head coach Chris Schwarz, who is in his second year as head coach of the Titans.

Coach Schwarz has done an excellent job of instilling a solid foundation here at M-R, Bayne said.

Bayne will be the head coach of the JV team and an assistant to Schwarz on the varsity. Bayne said he has already set goals for his JV squad.

We want to have a winning record, he said. In addition I want to make sure I have equipped the kids with the skills to perform well at the varsity level.

Bayne is also optimistic about the varsity squad.

After seeing what they can do at practice, I would be scared if I were the other teams in our conference, Bayne said. We have a pretty deep squad.

Overall Bayne is excited for the opportunity to bring success to the baseball program at M-R.
