Coaching changes: The other March Madness

GREENSBORO, North Carolina - What do Martin Newton, Scott Stricklin and Eric Hyman, among others, have in common?

They're all Division I athletics directors in search of a new head basketball coach.

Coaching changes: The other March Madness.

One meeting with your boss and you're done. At some places. Others can take longer.

If you're not here, or at one of the seven other sites for the second and third rounds of the NCAA Tournament, you may be nowhere.

Do you think Rick Stansbury would've "retired" Thursday after 14 years as head coach at Mississippi State if this weren't the third straight year he missed the dance? If he hadn't failed to advance beyond the first weekend in each of his six NCAA appearances?

Would South Carolina have swallowed Darrin Horn's hefty buyout if he'd gone to the tournament at least once during his four years there?

How much easier was it for Newton to end Jimmy Tillette's 15-year tenure because the coach's back-to-back NCAA trips came more than a decade ago?

Anthony Grant made his own coaching life a little easier by pushing Alabama through its series of injuries and suspensions and into the field for the first time in his three years in Tuscaloosa. He'll gather a little more capital here today if the Tide can take down Creighton. He also might start to show up on the radar of other schools. If he's not already there. Looking at you, Illinois.

Different schools with job openings have different needs. Samford's Newton, Mississippi State's Stricklin and South Carolina's Hyman will be fishing in different ponds, but they should have something in common beyond the ability to hand someone the keys to a Division I program.

Italian family brings wonderous circus 'community' to Beirut

Posted: at 3:14 pm

BEIRUT: For the Togni family, the circus is more than a career, it is a way of life.

Their genetically transmitted adventurous spirit has brought them for the first time to Beirut, with the collaboration of the Italian Culture Ministry and the Lebanese Tourism Ministry, to present the National Italian Circus Il Florilegio.

The term Florilegio is Italian for bouquet, meaning a collection of the best numbers according to general assistant Isabelle Gillier.

Livio Togni has been in the circus business his whole life, as his father, grand father and those before them were.

The roots of this circus can be traced back 130 years he proudly stated. This circus is our life, we have created a closely knitted community that is now our home, and as we travel we live collective strong experiences that bring us even more together.

Il Florilegio was crowned the National Italian Circus in 1938 by decree of King Victor Emmanuel III who was famous for his love of entertainment.

As for today, Livios sons Steve and Max have taken over the torch, the first being the star of the show and the second being the director. Steve graduated high school in Italy and went on to study accounting until he was 19 years old, while still touring with his family during vacations. He also started coaching tennis at a young age, but no matter what he did with his life, he could not tame his urge to follow in his ancestors footsteps and surrender to the magic of the circus life.

My brother and I are the sixth generation to take over the circus, how could I not carry on this dynasty? he asked.

I especially love the contact I have with the animals. Contrary to what many people think, they are not my slaves, they are my partners and friends, we share a strong bond Steve said as we were touring the animal area in the back of the marquee.

And as we approached the tigers cage where three beautiful creatures were lying peacefully, Steve lifted his hand to the thick steel bars. The male tiger, biggest in size, quickly approached to greet him as he gracefully stood up on his two back feet and placed his front paws on the cage as if to hug his friend and trainer.

Ingle coaching tree extends to new generation

Posted: at 7:09 am

Its said that timing is everything, and Israel Ingle can attest to that.

Five years ago, Ingle, the son of former Kennesaw State mens basketball coach Tony Ingle, was hired to restart the program at Gordon College, which had been dormant since 1993.

When I was coaching at Kennesaw State, the elder Ingle said, I suggested to the (Gordon) president that they should restart the basketball program and hire one of my assistants to get it going.

After all, Tony Ingle had a successful history with Gordon, a junior college in Barnesville, about halfway between Atlanta and Macon. He coached the Highlanders from 1985-88 and led the team to a 28-10 record and region runner-up finish in 1988.

By the time Gordon reinstated mens basketball, Ingles assistants had found other jobs. Instead, the administration turned to the next-best candidate.

They interviewed Israel while he was still a senior in college, the elder Ingle said. Hed been around basketball his entire life, so they felt he was ready for the responsibility, and so was I. In fact, he had the coaching job before he had the diploma.

Israel Ingle had followed his father around as Tonys coaching career unwound, from Gordon to Alabama-Huntsville to BYU and, finally, Kennesaw State. Israel even played four years for his father at Kennesaw State and was part of the Owls 2004 NCAA Division II national championship team.

The hire proved to be the right move for Gordon as Ingle has guided the Highlanders (26-7) on a 13-game winning streak and their first trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I National Championship, which begins Tuesday in Hutchinson, Kan.

Its the first trip to the national tournament for Gordon in the programs on-and-off history of more than 50 years.

Behind the play of Jarvis Williams (18 points per game, 10.3 rebounds per game) and all-region selection Ryan Fleming (11 points, 4 assists), Gordon finished second in its Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association standings and got past Waycross 60-57 in the first round of the GCAA tournament March 6.

DALLAS and JACKSONVILLE, Fla., March 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --U.S. Preventive Medicine today announced a new strategic development collaboration with Qualcomm Life Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, for functionality enhancements to Macaw, the company's award-winning mobile health & fitness app, as well as for accelerated integration with the numerous wireless devices, monitors and sensors that are part of Qualcomm Life's 2net Platform and wireless health ecosystem.

Macaw powered by The Prevention Plan, was launched in December 2011 as a full-feature app combining calorie, nutrition and activity tracking, health assessment, education, and game theory to motivate healthy behaviors. Enabled by Qualcomm Life, Macaw is designed to become the ultimate digital health monitor, integrating with wireless devices, monitors and sensors, as well as other popular health and fitness apps, creating a dashboard of health metrics all in one convenient app.

"The mobile health marketplace is exploding with health apps and wireless devices, all providing unprecedented data about a person's individual biometrics and health status. The challenge is that consumers can easily become overwhelmed with data. Through our collaboration with Qualcomm Life and integration with the 2net Platform, we are building Macaw to serve as the ultimate personal health monitor to collect all the disparate data and present it to the user in a meaningful, actionable way," said Christopher Fey, founder, CEO and chairman of U.S. Preventive Medicine.

According to Rick Valencia, vice president and general manager of Qualcomm Life, "U.S. Preventive Medicine has a proven track record with The Prevention Plan, of helping consumers improve their individual health risks and lead healthier lives. Qualcomm Life is pleased to be working with U.S. Preventive Medicine on the development of Macaw to translate this success to the mHealth environment. Through our strategic collaboration, Qualcomm Life and U.S. Preventive Medicine can transform consumers' health data into actionable health intelligence that may enable them to live healthier, longer, more fulfilling lives."

Unlike other available health and fitness apps, Macaw is based on the clinical science of preventive medicine and is universally designed for people who exercise regularly as well as those who are novices when it comes to physical activity. Macaw currently syncs with the Fitlinxx Actiped+ all-day activity monitor, and WorkSmart Labs' weight loss and fitness app, Noom Weight Loss.

Additional features for members of The Prevention Plan include:

Macaw was named "Hot for the Holidays" by CTIA and "Top App" by industry experts and consumer voting at the recent "Mobile Apps Showdown," a competition held in conjunction with the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Tuloso-Midway grad put USA ahead of coaching career

Posted: at 5:44 pm

without comments

There's a story on the brim of the boonie Coach Steve Snyder sometimes wears to football practice.

It's patriotic story of sacrifice and service. It's told in the patches firmly sewn in place U.S. Army. Airborne. Snyder.

At the height of the U.S. war on terror, Snyder put his teaching and coaching career on hold and enlisted in the Army National Guard, eventually serving a year-long tour of duty in Iraq.

He finished college and was already working as a coach at Saenz Elementary School in Alice when he was deployed to Iraq in 2006. It was a huge sacrifice, but Snyder said serving his country in its time of need was a privilege, and most importantly, his responsibility.

"It was just something I felt I had to do," he said about enlisting later in life. "Pretty much everything that was going on in Iraq I felt the need to help out. I felt like my country needed me."

In Iraq, the 1992 Tuloso-Midway High School graduate was a gunner in an Airborne infantry unit. His role was to man 240 Bravo and 50-caliber machine guns in a turret on military vehicles. He didn't have to perform a combat jump, but he did assist in removing prisoners of war on helicopters.

Snyder said by enlisting at a later age, he was able to serve as a leader and mentor to younger troopers, a role he gladly embraced.

"I believe I helped," Snyder said. "I feel like my country needed a helping hand. It needed leaders to help our soldiers. I met up with guys just like me who had already been to college and had their degrees and still wanted to help. Their objective was just like mine to help our soldiers."

After high school, where he was a quarterback and free safety for the Warriors, Snyder went to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. After graduating, he began coaching at Coastal Bend Youth City, a charter school in Corpus Christi.

When the U.S. war in Iraq began to intensify, Snyder felt compelled to act. He enlisted in 2004 and after training, his first deployment was as part of Operation Jump Start, a mission in which national guardsmen assisted U.S. Customs and Border Patrol in guarding the U.S.-Mexican border.
