Bernie: Simple life just fine for Hitchcock
Posted: at 11:03 pm
At this stage of his life, Ken Hitchcock claims he's an uncomplicated man. This belies his previous image as an intense, restless and occasionally volatile coach. The Hitchcock soul has endured plenty of torment through the years, but he's 60 now, and people change.
When he took over as Blues coach on Nov. 7, Hitchcock had to find a home for his new wife Corina and their two pugs, Billy and Buster. Their choice was a condo in University City, near Delmar and I-170.
"It's been exactly what I wanted: simple," Hitchcock said. "On one street, I have my whole life. I have the barbershop, the Starbucks, the dry cleaners, and the grocery store. I have everything on one street. That's how I like to live my life, on very simplistic terms."
Since hiring Hitchcock, the upwardly mobile Blues have moved into a much better NHL neighborhood.
An elite NHL neighborhood, where the residents have an impressive trophy case, always leaving room for a Stanley Cup.
True to his code, Hitchcock has kept things simple on the ice by implementing a north-south, tempo-based, pesky-forecheck style that best utilizes the Blues' roster.
Saturday night at Scottrade Center, the traditionally hard-luck Blues missed out on a chance to clinch first place in the Central Division in front of their passionate home fans, inexplicably losing 5-2 to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
As it turned out, the Blues managed to clinch later Saturday when Chicago defeated Nashville in overtime. It isn't the way the Blues wanted to lock in first place in the Central for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, but we'll take it.
The Blues have flattened out late during the regular season, going 3-3-3 since March 13. They've been at least temporarily bumped from the top spot in the Western Conference, with Vancouver holding a one-point lead over the Blues with three games remaining for each team.
The Blues must raise their game to make noise in the Stanley Cup playoffs, but that's another conversation for another day. It's special to win the Central, easily the NHL's toughest division.

BUCHANAN Michael Harris knows what its like to grow up with parents that are less than supportive. Because of that, Harris struggled with confidence and finding his calling in life. But a series of events in life brought him into life-coaching classes. And now as a certified life coach, the Buchanan resident is helping others discover their passions and instilling them with confidence and guidance to pursue them. I see myself as an encourager more than anything else, Harris said. They need to know the lies they were told as kids that you cant do this, you wont amount to anything in this world arent true. Its my job to get them past that garbage. Thirteen years in the making, Harris is launching his life coaching business in Buchanan, Succeed in Life LLC. For now, the business is located in the Rubicon Computers Building, 122 E. Front St., although Harris has plans to expand. He envisions 12 centers throughout the Michiana area for life-coaching sessions and seminars. Succeed in Life focuses on growth in all aspects of life, including personal, financial, career, relationship, business and physical growth. Harris also has plans for a childrens growth division. He says all divisions of the company are rooted in Christian morals and principles. Im not an expert in any of those areas, Harris said. But Im about giving guidance and encouraging people. Harris, who formerly hosted a radio program in Phoenix about succeeding in business with honesty, says he wants to help en- trepreneurs and potential business owners. Statistically, 75 percent of all working Americans are just two paychecks from bankruptcy, Harris said. My passion is helping these people to succeed. Harris used to work as a training coordinator in the Naval Reserve, helping people determine their career goals and how to get there. The life coaching came as an extension of that, said Harris, explaining that his programming can be fit for anyone. It doesnt matter if youre unemployed, underemployed or making $100,000 a year and know that you should be doing something else, Harris said. Harris plans to offer group coaching seminars and one-on-one sessions. He also has a childrens program, centered on a product called Piano Wizard, which helps children grow musically and in self-esteem. There will be a week- long grand opening for the company 1 to 5:30 p.m. today through Thursday and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Halls baseball field dedicated to Bob Polston
Posted: at 1:44 am
Bob Polston spent countless hours during the golden years of his life at the Halls High School baseball field.
Polston mowed the grass. Worked the pitcher's mound. Dragged the infield. Critiqued the team and his son, Doug, Halls' baseball coach since 1988, while sitting behind the backstop.
Almost until his death last August at age 77, Bob Polston was a fixture at the field, which was dedicated as Bob Polston Field during a ceremony Friday before the Red Devils' 7-6 victory against Morristown East.
"It's a special day for me and my family and this community," Doug Polston said. "The man dedicated over 50 years of his life to the high school youth in this county. This is something the community wanted to do, and if (Bob) knew about it, he'd scoff at it a little bit, but I'm proud of it."
Bob Polston, a 1952 graduate of Joelton High School in Middle Tennessee, spent 21 years coaching football and baseball at East High School, Austin-East High School, and Rule High School. He was KFL Coach of the Year in 1969, '71, '73, and '76.
After his coaching career, Polston served 27 years as athletic director for the Knox County School System before retiring in 2004.
Even before retiring, Polston spent plenty of time around the Halls baseball program and even more time once he retired.
"It's a good thing it happened with them dedicating the field, but there's never going to be another person like Bob," said Zach Lawson, a 2006 Halls graduate and currently assistant baseball coach at Gibbs. "He just meant so much to everybody that's been through here. He was a great person and this is a good thing they did for him."
Among those attending the ceremony were Bob Polston's wife, Dorothy; his sister, Sarah Anderson of Joelton; and his daughter, Kathy Arnold of Strawberry Plains.
Dorothy spent years working in the Halls concession stand while Bob watched from his spot behind the backstop, where a memorial and plaque with his name stands.
Program Addresses Failure to Launch Syndrome – Released by Forte Strong
Posted: at 1:44 am
Saint George, UT (PRWEB) March 31, 2012
Forte Strongs failure to launch program for young men reaches new success with its experiential approach to life coaching. Young men are becoming more motivated, active, happy and educated.
Recent studies show that young men are becoming less and less involved in society. They are experiencing a larger substance abuse rate, more mental health issues and a suicide rate 5 times that of young women. They are also trending a lower graduation rate, poorer scholastic performance and lower career acquisition post college. All of these elements may be contributing factors to the failure to launch syndrome so many young men are currently experiencing. Forte Strong, a premier failure to launch program specializing in the life coaching of these young men (18-26) and is taking the issue to heart. They provide a short term residential approach to coach these struggling young men to independence. Some of the key elements of the program involve enrolling into some form of higher education, personalized strength assessments to build confidence and self esteem, and a unique experiential education curriculum where students learn by doing.
Matthew Arrington, co-founder of Forte Strong explains, Young men just learn differently than women. Because they learn differently they need a different approach than the one society has set up for them and thats where Forte Strong comes in. We know how to coach these young men to success. We show them how to develop the confidence, the strength and the life skills they need to be successful in the real world that they can use for the rest of their lives.
Part of Forte Strongs experiential education approach involves participating in internships, job shadowing, community involvement, service projects, personal safety courses (CPR & first aid), higher education, international leadership treks, and much more. In an uncertain world Forte Strong gives young men the ability to rise to the challenge by developing their character, both internally and externally. They also provide free coaching for life even after their students have graduated the program which is unheard of in this industry.
Forte Strong is a failure to launch program specializing in the life coaching of young adult men. Forte Strong is also a national leader in providing skill development, leadership training, and life coaching for young adults ages 18-26. Their unique strength based coaching allows their students to accelerate their lives to independence in a shorter amount of time than most programs.

Bettendorf coaching legend in hospice care
Posted: March 31, 2012 at 12:55 am
Merv Habenicht first endeared himself to Bettendorf and the Quad-Cities straight out of college more than 50 years ago.
In that time, hes touched dozens upon dozens of lives as an educator, a football coach and a quality human being.
Some four months after being diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis a disease which causes scar tissue to overwhelm lungs preventing oxygen from being transferred to the bloodstream Habenicht was moved into hospice care last week.
Also afflicted with Alzheimers disease for the past year, the 77-year-old Habenicht is expected to live for another week or two. Evelyn Habenicht, his wife of 58 years, encourages friends to come and express their appreciation and love.
The response has just been fantastic, Evelyn Habenicht said. And Im not surprised.
Merv Habenicht won 228 games, five state championships and 10 Mississippi Athletic Conference titles in 29 seasons as head football coach at Bettendorf. He resigned following the 1999 season when he retired after 40 years of teaching at age 65.
Since exiting as coach, Habenicht continued to be a visible figure in the high school football community. He served stints as an assistant coach at Davenport Assumption, United Township and Davenport North in the few years following his departure from Bettendorf. In 2007, he served as a volunteer assistant with the Quad-City Steamwheelers.
Even through last fall, the Quad-City Sports Hall of Fame inductee regularly attended the weekly Davenport Grid Club luncheons.
To anyone who knew him, Habenicht was about much more than wins, though he didnt especially like losing.
When kids needed a father figure, that was what he did, said John Lavelle, who assisted Habenicht from 1976 to 1996. Sometimes it used to drive us crazy because hed get kids out for football that didnt fit our mold.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: After career low point, Pitino back on top
Posted: at 1:31 pm
Louisville head coach Rick Pitino is back on top of the college basketball world again almost three years after an extortion case and highly publicized sex scandal. (Gerald Herbert / Associated Press)
A changed man? At this Final Four, no doubt.
But not for the reasons most people assume.
"We live vicariously through these kids," Pitino said Thursday. "I'm having the time of my life."
Almost three years after an extortion case exposed the messy details of his private life and left his buttoned-down reputation in tatters, Pitino is on top of the coaching world again. Louisville is back in the Final Four for the first time since 2005 after what undoubtedly is one of the finest coaching jobs of his career.
The fourth-seeded Cardinals (30-9) were riddled with injuries during the season and skidded into the Big East tournament just two games over .500 in conference play, including four losses in their last six games. But the Cardinals ripped off four wins in as many days and haven't cooled off yet. They play top-seeded Kentucky on Saturday.
"We definitely feel like we're the team that's not supposed to be here," point guard Peyton Siva said.
Think of the big names in college coaching, and Pitino always was near the top of the list. He was the first men's coach to take three schools to the Final Four, starting with a scrappy, undersized, 3-point shooting Providence team 25 years ago.
He won an NCAA title with Kentucky in 1996.
And with his finely tailored suits and natty shoes, he gave the schlumpy look of college coaches a much-needed makeover.

Kansas' Manning takes coaching job at Tulsa

NEW ORLEANS -- Danny Manning's last game as a player at Kansas ended with a national title. He hopes his last game as an assistant coach for the Jayhawks does, too.
Manning has agreed to become the head coach of Tulsa, joining Barry Hinson as the second assistant from coach Bill Self's staff to announce their departure during the week of the Final Four. Both coaches will assume their new duties after Kansas is done in New Orleans.
Danny Manning has shaped Kansas into one of the nation's best programs at developing post players. He's proved he's more than ready for his next challenge at Tulsa, writes Jason King. Story
The Jayhawks play Ohio State in the national semifinals Saturday night.
"Right now my focus is on Kansas and its participation in the Final Four," Manning said in a statement released by Tulsa on Thursday. "We've worked extremely hard to get to this point, and we want to keep it going for another few days."
Tulsa officials are planning an introductory news conference next week, and the notoriously media shy Manning managed to slip away from practice Thursday unnoticed.
His move comes after Hinson, the Jayhawks' director of basketball operations, accepted the job at Southern Illinois. He was introduced Wednesday before rejoining Kansas in New Orleans.
Jamie Squire/Getty ImagesDanny Manning, right, has earned a reputation as one of the elite coaches of big men. He helped mold Thomas Robinson into one of the nation's top players and a lottery pick.
"We've been fortunate. We had two guys get jobs yesterday, and I don't know how much that happens," Self said Thursday afternoon at the Superdome. "The big thing for me is when I told those respective schools, I said, 'I'm fine, but let's do it now. I don't want the rumors and to have to lie and say you haven't taken a job. Hey, let's get it out of the way now.'"
