Peter King: Five reasons Parcells would consider coaching Saints; mail

Sean Payton and Bill Parcells are close friends from Payton's time working on Parcells' Dallas Cowboys staff.

AP

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- At the NFL meetings every year, there's a Monday night reception with a band (Adele seemed to be the flavor of the evening last night) and most of the coaches, owners, GMs, league people and media mixing it up. At this little soiree, I got one question about 18 times: "You think Bill Parcells would come back?''

I do, under the right circumstances.

I covered Parcells for four years as a Giants beat writer for Newsday in the '80s, and have known him well since then. I watched a spring training game with him in Jupiter, Fla., on Monday. And so I've spoken with him about the Saints situation at some length. And there may never have been circumstances more right than these for Parcells to get back on the sideline.

Five reasons why:

1. It's a 10-month job. Nine-, maybe, by the time Parcells would take over. Parcells, who will be 72 on opening day, insists on a one-year contract with ESPN because he doesn't want to be pinned down for longer than that.

2. It's with a legitimate Super Bowl contender. He's had Phil Simms and Drew Bledsoe, who were very good quarterbacks, but never a quarterback who's the complete package playing at this high a level as Drew Brees. It's a passing league. He knows he'd be able to basically cede control of the offense to Brees and offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, sit back, and watch them put 30 points on the board most weeks.

3. He really likes Sean Payton. He'd be doing Payton a solid.

4. The money's good, or should be. Parcells owns horses and likes money.

Auriemma On Coaching Kids These Days

Posted: at 1:12 am

without comments

I asked Geno Auriemma on Saturday whether coaching 17-year-old girls was different now then it was 10 years ago, when he was young, perhaps filled with more energy, etc.

I have less patience for these guys now than I did when I was 30-something, Auriemma said. I used to try and see things from their standpoint. Now I am like a lot of old people [he is 58] that dont really give a crap about anybody but themselves.

Have you ever been to a place where I am signing autographs? Well, there will be nine 8-year-olds in line and some 75-year-old will just knock the kids over to get an autograph. Theyll just bulldoze the kids thinking you know what, Im 75 and I dont have much time left and you have the rest of your life so get out of my way.

Im getting to an age where I have less patience. Ive been doing this for 30 years and if I do something, then do it. Dont look at me and ask why. When I was 35, I would say OK and then explain why we want to do [something]. So is there a difference in me? Yes, I guess I just have less patience and they have less of an attention span. That is not a good combination.

Im trying to teach them to have more patience, better concentration for longer periods of time. And theyre testing my patience.

Hallsville makes coaching change

By Rus Baer

Sunday, March 25, 2012

John Morris was hired in May of 2005 to build a high school football program at Hallsville.

After almost seven years laying the foundation, the 38-year coaching veteran was voted out of his coaching and administration position last month by a 4-3 vote of the school board.

"My career has consisted of starting programs, restarting programs and putting life back into programs," Morris said. "Sometimes you have to make decisions that aren't the most popular in the world, but they're the best for the program.

"I don't do politics. I do what I think is right and make decisions on what I think is right, and if there are negative consequences, then I accept those consequences."

In four varsity seasons, the Indians won only one district game against winless Southern Boone in 2008 and compiled an 8-32 mark. The past two seasons, Hallsville finished 3-7 after winless district slates against state-ranked powers Centralia, Macon and Brookfield.

With the playoff format changing next season and Hallsville moving to the Tri-County Conference, Morris was looking forward to the next step of the Indians' excavation.

"The thing that upsets me more than anything else is I poured my life into this thing, and we were coming," Morris said. "We were getting close.

"Even if I'm the only one that thinks so, I think I've built a hell of a foundation for a pretty good program."

Kevin Haskin: Grandpa Roy living another dream

Posted: March 25, 2012 at 6:22 am

ST. LOUIS A life-altering experience doesnt necessarily prevent someone from living the dream.

Roy Williams was in his ninth season coaching basketball at Kansas when his overriding goal was shattered.

His Jayhawks, saddled with just one loss all season after a funny bounce at Missouri, lost in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament to Arizona. A 34-2 record, Williams best win percentage in the 15 seasons he spent at KU, ended in unforeseen heartbreak.

And I thought, what else can I do? Williams recalled. And so at that point, I changed my dream of life, so that I could live long enough to coach my grandchildren in Little League baseball and basketball.

* * * * * * *

Until then, Williams desperate desire was to win a national championship at KU.

He never did so, yet as he spoke Saturday about the Midwest Regional final in which he will coach North Carolina against Kansas for a berth in the Final Four, Williams was in many ways the same ol Roy who coached the Jayhawks.

Yet in the past tense.

The opportunity to reminisce allowed Williams to touch on a variety of topics. Among them:
