Father’s Day is bittersweet for Ole Miss assistant Dan Werner, single dad molded by football, tragedy

OXFORD, Miss. There's something about the road that can make a football coach whole. Down each stretch of highway lies hope, whether it's a huge game or a prized recruit or a better job.

Dan Werner knows the road as well as anyone, both as a program-builder and as a part of a BCS championship team. He has been conquering the road all his adult life; he was the son of a football coach. The road is in his blood.

Werner was the quarterbacks coach on the 2001 Miami Hurricanes team that some argue is the best college squad of all time. He was a part of three national-title staffs at Miami, which set him up for other chances, including the biggest chance of all the opportunity to be a head coach.

The road took him to FCS member Northwestern State (La.) early in 2009, where he took an offensive coordinator's job that might have led him to his first head-coaching job in a long career. Maybe, after 25 years, the road could make his career whole.

Then one morning on the road, his phone rang. He picked it up, and he stared in shock.

He had to turn around.

Mississippi offensive coordinator Dan Werner and his son Ian. On that February day three years ago, and on many days afterward, Dan Werner made a choice. It was not the choice a lot of coaches would make. It was not the kind of choice we're used to hearing about from big-time coaches.

It was far different from the choice Bobby Petrino made when he got on a motorcycle with a woman young enough to be his daughter. It was not like the choice Urban Meyer made when he quit his Florida job, then un-quit the next day. It was not like the choice your favorite coach makes when rather than going home, he sleeps on the couch in the office, remote control in his hand.

Werner did not make the kind of choice coaches make when they want to be successful at their jobs. Instead, he made a choice he knew probably would end up costing him the job he always dreamed of.

Dan Werner met Kim Hadder in 1993, at a party in Ruston, La., where he coached at Louisiana Tech. He immediately was impressed. She was a nanny for a new coach, and she knew football. That was going to be crucial if he was going to spend any real time with her.

Words You Will Never Hear a Life Coach Say

Man: Hello, Im calling to inquire about your life coaching services. Ive been in corporate America for 18 years and Im ready for a change. I dont like working in an office atmosphere. Back in high school and college I loved to paint, landscapes mostly, and Id like to get back to that.

Life Coach: Well, what are you waiting for? Get yourself an easel, a palette and a brush and set yourself up on Main Street on a nice, sunny day. Quit that job. Put on some old comfy clothes. Get painting!

****

And there you have words said by no life coach ever.

Yes, thats right. Im stating it unequivocally.

OK, maybe there is a scenario where it could happen.

Man: Hello, I just won the Lotto. I already paid off my mortgage, have accounts set up for my kids college education, am set for retirement, helped some relatives in need, and have given to some charities near and dear to my heart. Im still working in corporate America, but Im ready for a change. Back in high school and college I loved to paint, landscapes mostly, and Id like to get back to that.

Life Coach: Well, what are you waiting for? Get yourself an easel, a palette and a brush and set yourself up on Main Street. Quit that job. Put on some old clothes. Get painting! Do you really even need me?

Man: Well, I was thinking more along the lines of creating a plan to get back to my art. Maybe learn how I can apply it using new technology.

Life Coach: Ohhhhhhhhhh. Yes, of course. I can help you with that.

NBA finals notebook: Coaching comparison

"There are different approaches to being successful. We can all learn from everybody," Fisher replied. "Phil is regarded as one of the greatest coaches in sports history. Scotty is still early in his head-coaching career and possibly could be on his way to being considered one of the best coaches. His approach is different, but I've learned a lot since I've been here in how to manage people and manage players.

" ... (Brooks) has an unbelievable ability to have a sense of where (Thunder players) are. Maybe the advantage for him is that when these players were drafted, he was right there from day one. He's been with these guys for four years."

Fisher's responsibility: During the NBA lockout, players like Kevin Durant and LeBron James killed time by playing flag football and in charity basketball events. The 37-year-old Fisher didn't have time for flag football. As president of the NBA Players Association, he was involved for months in the negotiation of a new labor agreement.

"For obvious reasons, we all had a vested interest in trying to find a way to get basketball back onto the floor and out of the conference room," Fisher said. "I think we all should be proud of our efforts, but most appreciative of the (fans) - sticking with our game and coming back once we did resume play. ... You can't get this anywhere else. You can't find LeBron on another channel. There's not a Kevin Durant on other programming. That's what makes this really special."

Wade credited: Miami's Dwyane Wade was asked repeatedly Wednesday about where his body is at health-wise, and if his age - 30 - is beginning to show.

"I still have something in me, I have some left in me," Wade said. "I wish it was possible to stay at the same athleticism as I was at 24, but that's not possible."

Wade was 7-of-19 from the field Tuesday, scoring 19 points and dishing out eight assists. But on a night when the game's other stars - LeBron James, Durant and Russell Westbrook - were all playing at a higher level, his performance drew criticism.

Thunder players said they viewed no differences in Wade's game. Instead, they credited their defense for forcing him into a subpar effort.

"Everybody's defense is geared to not allow them to be superheroes, so to speak," Fisher said. "I think he is just as capable and always will be of putting up big numbers."

Durant reflects on Rucker game: On Wednesday, Durant was asked what he remembered about the night in August when he put on a streetball show at Rucker Park in New York, scoring 66 points and dazzling onlookers.

Oilers should consider AHL’s Jon Cooper for coaching job

Posted: at 7:17 pm

without comments

Jon Cooper used to stand before the bench as a lawyer, now he stands behind one.

And if he used to defend people, nobody has to defend his record as a hockey coach.

Everywhere he coaches, he wins. Midget AAA in Michigan, junior in two different leagues, in the pros with the Norfolk Admirals in the American Hockey League. Hes a rising star.

Would the Edmonton Oilers ever hire Cooper? Who knows?

He grew up in Prince George, went to school in the U.S. on a lacrosse scholarship, worked on Wall Street, then got his law degree and opened his own practice, before hockey took over his life and he decided to do it full-time about nine years ago.

At the least, the Oilers should be interviewing the young bright coach.

The Oilers are keeping their coach search ultra secret, although one of the leading candidates, Brent Sutter, has not had an interview with Oilers since working the bench for Canada at the world championship in May. Oilers team president Kevin Lowe was Canadas general manager.

Oilers associate coach Ralph Krueger, who could very well be the front-runner because he knows the team and the players, is still waiting for a decision, too.

As for Cooper, his team just won the AHL championship in Norfolk, Va., 28 wins in a row in league play from Super Bowl Sunday on, and they finished it off with 10 straight wins in the playoffs, winning 43 of their last 46 games. He hasnt been told that another team wants to talk to him, but, while he loves working for the Tampa Bar Lightning and is grateful for the opportunity to coach their farm club, surely an NHL feeler will come. If not the Oilers, then the Washington Capitals, also looking for a head coach.

My name is hot right now because of what weve done and how we did it, but I havent formally been contacted by anybody, Cooper said.

Peninsula coaching icon retires

For the past few years, whenever the season ended for the Peninsula High School baseball program, Marco Malich seemingly had a decision to make.

In May, after he guided Peninsula back to the Class 3A state playoffs, Malich realized it was time to let someone else do the job hes done for 33 years. He officially announced his retirement last week.

I wasnt going to retire until I got the program back into contention, Malich said. At the end of the season, I realized where we were. Ive got a great team coming back, so I thought the next guy that takes over, it wont be easy, but they still should be in contention and hopefully get to state again.

Malich leaves Peninsula as one of the winningest coaches in Washington high school baseball history. According to the Washington Baseball Poll a website run by former coach Lem Elway his 19 victories in 2012 give him 439 for his career.

Malichs teams won 13 league championships and reached state 12 times, including a second-place finish in 2006.

But its not only the wins that people surrounding the program will remember.

First of all, hes a great guy who loves kids, said Pete Weymiller, who has assisted Malich since 2002. He treats them like men and helps them develop into men. Hes just a real gentle soul and a real nurturing guy.

Weymiller, whose son Alex plays for Peninsula, said it was a shock to hear Malich was retiring, even though it was something hed mulled for a few years.

I just really admire him for stepping aside; a lot of guys wouldnt, for whatever reason, Weymiller said. He felt like there could be somebody who could take the team to the next level.

Peninsula Principal Tim Winter said he was interested in finding Malichs replacement as quickly as possible so they could work with players during the summer.

Wiedmer: Farewell fete fitting for Fanning

Posted: at 3:26 am

As she had for as many Mays as she could remember, Sharon Fanning-Otis headed to Marco Island, Fla., last month for a week's vacation.

However, there was one very important difference for the Scenic City native who's spent the better part of the last four decades of her life coaching women's basketball at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Kentucky and Mississippi State.

"For the first time in 37 years I didn't bring along a day planner," said Fanning-Otis, who retired as the MSU coach earlier this spring after 17 seasons, then swiftly joined the school's Bulldog Club as a fundraiser.

Not that she thinks her life now needs no advance planning.

"I won't be getting up at 4:30 in the morning in October anymore for early practices, but I've worked hard all my life and this is going to be another tough challenge, especially the first year," she said. "But I'll be 60 next year, and this seemed like a good time for a change."

Longtime friends Wanda Albritton and Roz Crownover figure it's a good time to honor Fanning-Otis, who grew up as Sharon Cable, starring in every sport she played at City High School.

So this Sunday afternoon -- Father's Day -- they're hosting a reception in her honor at 1 p.m. at the Chickamauga Fly Bait and Casting Club in Soddy-Daisy.

"I know it's Father's Day," the guest of honor said. "But there were always a lot of dads at our games to watch their daughters, so maybe they'll come to this, too."

Anyone coming to the reception will have a chance to salute the woman who just might be the best female athlete in our city's history -- a marvelous basketball, volleyball and softball player who unfortunately came along too early to benefit from Title IX until she began to coach.

"I loved every sport. I loved competing," Fanning-Otis said Monday from her Starkville office. "In fact, if there had been more opportunities in softball back then, I'm not sure I wouldn't have thought about coaching softball. I played it for 20 years and I loved it."

Stephen Ross promises improvements to Miami Dolphins, Sun Life Stadium

Posted: at 2:23 pm

without comments

Dolphins season-ticket holders on the Monday evening conference call with franchise owner Stephen Ross should have no doubt: Ross likes to roll with the new.

New look for the Dolphins stadium, new look for the Dolphins uniforms, new coaching staff, new results leading to new game times. And, yes, not the old Dolphins fight song.

Taking that last part first season-ticket holders brought up the fight song more than anything else Ross insisted he retains a distaste for the banjo-strummed ode to the early 1970s Dolphins (later ripped off by the late 1970s Houston Oilers). The songs exposure in Sun Life Stadium will be limited to Dolphins scores while the teams ahead with Jimmy Buffets Fins blaring after other Dolphins scores.

The one thing I never liked from Day One was the fight song, Ross said. I guess thats part of the privilege of ownership, but I understand the fans like it, so that will continue to be our policy.

As far as that team on the field, Ross responded positively when one season-ticket holder proposed a fashion makeover for the Dolphins.

I totally agree with you, Ross said. Were looking at all of that.

The Marlins went for new threads upon leaving Sun Life for Marlins Park. Dolphins CEO Mike Dee said that departure could allow for some other changes to 25-year-old Sun Life Stadium.

The Dolphins want to move the sideline stands closer to the field, something that should please fans who have spent 25 years sighing that even a full house in Miami Gardens doesnt rock with an intimidating feel the way the Orange Bowl could. Dee claimed Sun Life has the largest seat-to-field distance in the NFL.

Ross reiterated the Dolphins drive to make improvements to Sun Life that would satisfy the NFL enough to bring Super Bowl L to South Florida. He mentioned the concept the Dolphins showed the NFL two years ago, a stadium canopy that would keep the fans dry on rainy days (such as Super Bowl XLI) and in the shade on sunny ones.

I think by the end of the summer, well have some plan to present to you and the league, Ross said. Its never going to be an enclosed stadium. Nobody in Florida wants to be in a dome [for football].

COACHING LIFE: The unique saboteur

Posted: at 2:23 pm

without comments

A friend OF MINE once wrote a poem which he recited at one of my seminars.

It ended with the words, I am unique, just like you. Even in our uniqueness we have commonality. Uniqueness is a gift. It is from our uniqueness that we derive our distinctive competencies. We could all be lawyers, teachers or coaches and still avoid poisoning our spirits with feelings of inferiority that lead to jealousy and competitiveness. To put it plainly, No one can do you like you no one! It does not matter how many people carry a similar job title.

It is for this reason that I get passionate about helping others leverage their uniqueness, since so many use it as a barrier to success. We make ourselves so different from the others that we sabotage our lives as we recite one excuse after another as to why we cannot accomplish what others have.

There is a fine line between reasons and excuses and the truth is that the creative energy spent on pummeling ourselves into irrelevance could be spent noticing, celebrating and putting ourselves into productive action.

So how exactly does one sabotage oneself with their uniqueness? First, you find someone who has been as successful as you desire to be, usually in your professional field. You then launch a desire to be as successful as that person. Then you start to lay the groundwork and start feeling pretty good about what you are planning to create, but then you hit a snag. You realize that this project, career or business is going to cost you more money than you anticipated.

Now be mindful that this single factor is the reason you are experiencing a snag you are still competent and still have a deep desire to achieve your goal. But then you allow that one snag to trigger a chain reaction of limiting thoughts which sound something like this: I cant make that much money!

They are smarter than I am. It is surprising to me that they are so successful, If I did not have to work part-time, I would be better at this.

If I lived in America . . . . They have connections. I dont.

My complexion is different.

They have been in this field longer.
