Fitness Pros on Their Favorite Rest-Day Activities

Just like it took me a bit to get into the home workout groove when gyms closed, I also had to work at establishing a healthy rest-day schedule.

Once I discovered the at-home workouts I actually liked, and after my resistance bands and dumbbells arrived in the mail, I got in the habit of intensely working out every single day which isn't ideal because I wasn't giving my body the proper time to recover and repair. I was potentially setting myself up for an injury and stunting my own fitness goals.

Just because I could do a workout in the comfort of my own living room with just a click of a button, doesn't mean I should do so every single day.

After some reading on establishing a workout routine for my goals, I finally got it down and now look forward to my days off from exercise. I turn off my alarm clock so I can wake up naturally, with help from the sun peaking through my curtains. I try to spend my rest days as digitally unplugged as possible, too truly "resting" in every sense of the word. Sometimes I go for long, leisurely walks, other times I kick back on the couch and read through a few chapters of a new book.

Getting my routine in order made me start wondering what fitness pros do on their rest days, so I reached out to five experts from Pilates instructors to certified personal trainers to find out.

For Mercedes Owens, a Chicago-based Barry's instructor, time spent with a good book always makes the list oh, and some puppy bonding time, too, of course.

"My favorite rest-day activity is spending a couple of hours at the park with my dog, Leia, and a good book. I almost always keep a lineup of love stories, family dramas, and thrillers. Right now I'm reading Commonwealth by Ann Patchett and A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum," Owens says.

CorePower Yoga senior master trainer, Anthony Chavez makes self-care a priority on rest days. "I cue up whatever show I'm currently obsessed with on Netflix, then grab myself a treat (glass of wine on some days or Oreos whatever I'm craving!). Give yourself permission to 'take off your life' and rest in ways that are self-indulgent. Rest is just as essential as exercise is for vibrant, human health, which is why it's so important to me!"

But Chavez still incorporates movement on rest days, too just in a different way.

"Second favorite rest-day activity is to incorporate stretching and body work. We all work so hard in the gym and at work. Carving out dedicated time to deeply stretch your muscles and connective tissue by doing some yin style poses actually helps me sleep better, which in turn promotes better recovery. Body work can also be getting a massage or investing in something like the Hypervolt by Hyperice to help breakdown and massage muscles when you can't get an appointment from your favorite body worker! Ultimately, lean into doing things that fill you with joy and allow you to fully rest and reset," Chavez says.

Light activity like walking, hiking with his dog, and yoga is an essential part of Mindbody Fitness Expert and NASM-certified personal trainer Keegan Draper's rest days, too.

"I never truly take a complete rest day," Draper says. "I don't believe that taking a day to just lay around is the best for our body, or for recovery, so I always like to do some light physical activity. It's easy to do, gets me out in the sunshine with the vitamin D, and is a nice way to meditate/clear my mind. This also helps get my heart rate above resting and helps get oxygen and nutrients spread out to the muscles that need them the most. I can still manage to get my daily steps in, too!"

For Pure Barre teacher, Shantani Moore, spending time at the beach and spinning poi is one of her favorite things to do on rest days, but Moore also mentions strolling around her neighborhood with tea at sunrise.

"I'll even silence my phone sometimes or just turn it off entirely," Moore says. "It's so important to unplug and have that time to reset. I try to take a different route each time to keep it fresh, and sometimes I get some of my best ideas while I'm out!"

Sometimes, though, Moore mentions that rest days mean doing absolutely nothing: "Wake up, brush my teeth, hit the couch, and just veg. I think doing nothing gets a bad rep sometimes. When you're so physically active and on your grind most of the week, it's important to give yourself time to just eat hummus and binge Queer Eye. I mean, what else would you do on your day off?"

Where Will Peloton Be in 5 Years? – Motley Fool

You've probably seen television commercials for its products even if you're not terribly familiar with the company's fiscal performance. Peloton Interactive (NASDAQ:PTON), maker of web-connected fitness equipment, has made sure consumers know what its brand is all about. That marketing effort may even be the key reason Peloton shares have performed so well since the company went public in September. Enthusiasm can be infectious, sometimes in unexpected ways.

Investors who anticipate that Peloton will still be turning heads five years from now the same way it does today, however, may want to adjust their expectations. Indeed, the stock's highest-growth days may already be in the rearview mirror.

To its credit, Peloton's equipment addresses two of the health and fitness industry's biggest challenges.

First, it offers a true gym-like experience at home, complete with a personal workout leader and a virtual class of fellow Peloton treadmill and exercise bike owners. Even when tired and distracted consumers might be ready to skip a session, a feeling of community may keep them engaged.

Second, at-home exercises equipment saves time. Users don't have to drive to and from the gym and then wait for apparatus to become available. A workout can be started in finished in a few minutes.

The combination of these two solutions translated into equipment sales of $420.2 million during its most recently completed quarter, and subscription revenue of $98.2 million. The company believes subscriber growth and subscription revenue persisted into the current quarter, which will be reported on Sept. 10. The unique challenges of getting and staying fit in a world upended by COVID-19 has certainly accelerated Peloton's growth.

The odds of Peloton Interactive maintaining its current degree of interest and buzz into 2025, however, are low simply because the company's equipment and technology don't address three other big challenges for the fitness industry.

Chief among those challenges is consumer fickleness.

The idea of simplified fitness inspires well-intended plans today. As is the case with any fitness regimen, discipline and commitment are the ultimate key. Not many people have a whole lot of it. The numbers vary from one study to the next, but most research on the subject suggests that between half and two-thirds of paying members rarely if ever actually step foot in their gyms.

Again, Peloton addresses part of the challenge -- the "gym" is at home. Accessibility isn't necessarily the impasse, however. As fellow fool Nicholas Rossolillo explained of a Gallup poll taken late last year, about half of all fitness tracker owners said they were only "somewhat helpful," which could suggest that consumers don't fully utilize those purchases. Other studies suggest about half of all activity trackers stop being used within a matter of months.Those wrist-worn devices are an even more accessible path toward better fitness than Peloton equipment is, and many consumers won't even consistently wear them for more than a few weeks.

Another challenge that could slow Peloton's growth is the price point. The company's exercise bikes start at a retail cost of around $2200. Treadmills go for more than $4000. There's a market for high-end fitness equipment, but not a huge one, although the company offers financing plans to make its products more affordable.

The company is reportedly answering the call. Peloton CFO Jill Woodworth said last month that a cheaper treadmill was in the works,and there are also whispers that the company is working on a rowing machine. Those products may simply materialize at a later time.

It would be a strategic shift with some tricky nuances though. Namely, lower-cost equipment would pit it directly against better-established names like Nautilusand NordicTrack. It's also unsurprising to learn that other equipment makers are moving into the subscription-based fitness routine market. Mirror and Tonal are just a couple of the names aiming at Peloton's subscription customers, and any of them could eventually undercut Peloton's subscription prices in a big way.

Finally (and in the same vein), Peloton doesn't offer a follow-on purchase that would make sense for existing equipment owners to add to their collection. Sure, there may be some consumers to add a rowing machine and/or a treadmill to their exercise bike. Money and room become something of an issue for the average consumer though.

The irony is, a currently unprofitable Peloton Interactive may be out of the red by 2025. It's lost $160 million through the first three quarters of its fiscal 2020, but it's not difficult to see where things are going. Guidance for a top line of more than $1.7 billion this year is only a start. Five years from now, recurring and profitable subscription revenue could boost the top line in a big way.

The bigger and better Peloton gets between now and then, however, the more competitions steps up and copies its products with cheaper versions. In the meantime, a stock priced at more than 13 times the company's trailing sales suggest the best-case scenario is already priced in.

Bottom line? Peloton may still be the premier name in the business come 2025, but fitness equipment is a tough business. Just ask Nautilus, Schwinn, and Icarian Fitness, all three of which effectively drove one another into bankruptcy in the early '90s by chasing into the same fitness craze that took shape in the late '80s. The industry just doesn't lend itself to defensive moats. Peloton's only moat right now is the brand name's prowess, and that's cost the organization nearly $400 million in marketing and sales spending this year... about one-fourth of its revenue. The company can't spend like that forever.

Machine Gun Kelly tightens his grip on his kettlebells and fights to straighten his back, finally standing tall after a three-second battle with gravity. Hes midway through his last set of offset-stance deadlifts during this Friday workout, legs wobbling as he struggles to stand upright.

And then he does one more, because he isnt quitting now. These workouts are critical, forging mental toughness and explosive athleticism. As you might guess given his over-the-top moniker, MGK (real name: Colson Baker) is prone to over-the-top statements. I have no desire to just be a muscly version of myself, he says. Its the moments onstage that will define my live-performance legacy.

Its also the moments onstage that MGK loves, but both body and mind have to be ready to survive them. Hes planning to go on tour as soon as concerts are allowed again (his next album, Tickets to My Downfall, drops September 25), and hes also flexing his acting muscles, including in the new Netflix sci-fi thriller Project Power (streaming August 14). His music lies somewhere between that of blink-182 and 50 Cent, and every gig is a blend of rock, hip-hop, and calisthenics: He climbs rigging, hangs by one leg, leaps on and off speakers, and basically never stops moving. And he wants to do more.Im looking for the next thing, he says,where people will think Im a Terminator onstage and say, That cant be human. (See? Over-the-top.)

So five days a week, the six-foot-four, 180-pound 30-year-old works with Los Angelesbased trainer Nic Shimonek. Before they met, MGKs training amounted to pickup hoops at a neighbors house. Then nearly two years ago, he was contacted by Shimonek on Instagram and noticed that he worked with Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes.

The universe, I trust it, MGK says. If it leads me to click on somebodys name, there has to be a reason. Shimoneks workouts push MGK to develop muscle and stamina. He typically does two upper-body sessions and two lower-body sessions weekly, with an active recovery day in between. Today hes fighting through a total-body blast. Before the deadlifts, he did incline presses with Fatbells, basketball-shaped weights that alleviate the wrist pain he has from years of playing guitar.

Now hes battling through pushup shoulder tapsand casting occasional glares at Shimonek. He has a love-hate relationship with everything we do, the trainer says. He hates a lot of things that we just have to grind through. But he loves what it does for his body.

MGK and his band frequently perform for longer than their contracts mandate, sometimes staying onstage for two hours.

When you physically feel good, mentally feel good, he says, we want to play more. He also puts in late nights in the studio working on more music.

Aside effect of his hard work: He may add some action-hero muscle, too. One of his final moves in this session is a seated row with explosive Jammer arms, an exercise that helps his posture. But MGK loves how it focuses on his massive back tattoo, which the paparazzi routinely shoot. The more I see pictures of my back, the more I want to add muscle to it, he says, to change the landscape of how it looks over time.

Hes already changed plenty about his body, and he hopes people notice. Im not Dwayne The Rock Johnson, he says. But people should look at me and think, If this guy can get into the gym, I can, too.

Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, then shift your left toe to lineup with your right heel. Lift your left heel. Lower into a squat; stand back up. Thats 1 rep.

So we are half way through the 10 fundamental laws of health and fitness, and moving on to number 6, 7, and 8 this week.

Sometimes when we start getting fit again we get too focused on the scales and really approach getting fit too seriously. Do yourself a favour, set a goal, walk away from your scale, tape measure, and mirror, and go play! Take a class, sign up for a race, explore, meet new people, and challenge yourself. There is so much we can do when getting fit and active. I would really encourage you to play a sport, or at least have people to train with if at all possible. I go for a run with Brian Maher, Thos Hayes, and James Ledingham every Sunday. Not only is there great craic on the run, it makes the time fly. If it is rainy or you are not feeling it, it is great to have someone to keep you accountable.

The take away message here is eat healthy food, exercise often at a good intensity with others, and getting fit will take care of itself.

You need to have at least a 30 day plan that you follow. No exceptions. You cannot succeed if you are making it up one day at a time. I have an Excel spreadsheet of all my training sessions, including intensity and duration for the next month. This is vital. You need to write down your plan in advance, and preferably have a training partner on the same plan so that you are accountable to each other.

Make a discipline of writing out a plan at the start of each month and then sticking to it. This will help you to progress your training safely, allow you to plan appropriate rest, and finally take daily decision-making out of it. If you just 'wing it' every day then you will find that you talk yourself out of training a lot. Set the plan, and then follow through. Remember the 5 Ps - Poor Planning leads to Pretty Poor Performance.

It reduces sprains and strains in your back, shoulders, hips, knees, and neck, and helps protects bones, muscles, joints, tendons, and ligaments. We can turn back the clock but only if we take measures to improve our flexibility and functionality.

MANSFIELD After 10 weeks of being on pause, the Strive to Thrive contest will resume on Aug. 10 and close out the final three weeks of the competition.

In March, the competition came to an abrupt and unexpected halt due to COVID-19 shutting down many facilities, gyms included.

While Gov. Mike DeWine allowed gyms to reopen starting May 26, OhioHealth Ontario Health & Fitness Center did not reopen until July 22.

Being part of OhioHealth, they were looking at the larger picture for the hospital system itself, and during the time that we were shut down a lot of our staff were redeployed to assist with other things that were going on in the hospital like temperature checks at the doors and just helping with a lot of those other kinds of things that weren't really positions or jobs that needed to be done, said Carol Mabry, program coordinator for the Ontario Health & Fitness Center.

The Strive to Thrive competition will resume with seven contestants, two officially dropping out due to not wanting to put their families or themselves at risk.

Contestant Eddie Gallo cant wait for the contest to resume after successfully getting his diabetes under control with the help of the competition.

It's gonna be tough, I think, he said. You don't have to have that initial soreness and stuff all over again that youve already gotten accustomed to, so it'll be a little adjustment. Ill just be glad to get back to the gym and have that opportunity to use the equipment and be with (his trainer) and have a little bit of insight and encouragementhopefully keep things on track for the rest of the year.

The weight loss competition inspired by NBCs The Biggest Loser consists of weekly personal training sessions, nutritional education and group competitions. One major difference, however, will be that no one will be eliminated.

All contestants have received personal training sessions, a FitBit and a free membership to OhioHealth training facilities from Jan. 6 to (now) Aug. 24. An overall winner will be named based on his/her body composition analysis using OhioHealth's InBody 230.

Contestants were given the option to take a yoga or spinning class during the Strive To Thrive March community event.

The winner will receive a year-long membership to OhioHealth training facilities.

Gallo has never been interested in winning and already plans on getting a gym membership if he loses due to being more comfortable and active in that setting.

Ive got a little bit of equipment at home but it just seems like there's too much going on, or something that distracts you or somebody else's schedule intervenes and we don't really have the time to dedicate to doing it at home, Gallo said. So its almost like that thing where you need to go to that other place to make yourself be accountable for making it worthwhile. Its one of the reasons I've missed the gym so much during that time.

Below are the contestant standings the last time measurements were taken on March 15. We'll update the standings with the remaining contestants the week of August 17.

Since reopening the gym, Mabry shes seen an increase in membership and even their personal goal of reaching 100 visits a day.

We rolled out with a small schedule. We have to limit the (group class) sizes to nine people, so that we can make sure everybody's able to socially distance. But we definitely saw an increase just the last couple of days once classes started back up, versus the week and a half prior.

Although the competition wont get to end the way they pictured, Mabry is excited to get the remaining contestants back on track.

We're thrilled that the fitness center is reopened and that people are starting to come back in and that most of the Strive contestants are going to be coming back in to get back on track or continue on their journey, because some have done a good job, Mabry said.

My daughter tells her clients, You have to invest the same love and compassion for yourself at the start of your transformation that would to your own daughter if she was in your shoes."
