Get your sweat on! Aerobics and Zumba instructor Angela Watson will get your heart pumping and your feet moving to the beat. Classes are held in Kingstree and Hemingway and can be tailored to fit any age and athletic ability. Photo by Michaele Duke

She may be petite and she may be soft spoken but get her up on that stage and youll be steppin your way to a healthier physique. Angela Myers Watson has been teaching aerobics for 15 years and her following continues to expand. On the evenings she teaches, Watson is moving 20-plus ladies, men and kids who enjoy an hardy hour-long workout; and the do it without killing themselves.

Aerobics strengthens your heart and lungs and can also help lower your cholesterol, reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes, improve your immune function, and lower your blood pressure. Watson began her career in fitness by accident. I was asked to give a class and thats how it started, said Watson. She teaches aerobics and Zumba, both of which she is certified. She teaches the classes at the Williamsburg Recreation Center on Monday to Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. On Monday and Tuesday she leaves Kingstree and heads to the Chavis One Stop in Hemingway, where she takes up her craft for another hour.

Bertha Myers has been taking the senior class for five years and she doesnt plan on quitting anytime soon. Before I started the class my breath would be like shorter, said Myers who happens to be Watsons mother. Now I have plenty of energy.

I just enjoy coming out and we have Bingo after class on Mondays.

Senior citizens classes (age 50 and up) are held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday through Thursday with Wednesday class devoted to stretching. The seniors not only enjoy a good workout, theyre treated special.

Sometimes we have movie night, sometimes we take them to the mall, said Watson. But thats not all.

Once a year they get together and go on a bus tour or a cruise. Weve been to Jamaica, weve been to Mexico. We went to Pennsylvania to the Sight and Sound Theater. Theyve been all over.

Watson said she wants to expand her instruction. I want to do yoga but I want to spice it up because we do things in the morning, she said. We call it yoga flavor because I stretch them and I make them move. I like to add my own little touches. Whats even sweeter, all the classes are free.

Aerobics Vs Zumba! This workout will burn more calories – Businessinsider India

Aerobics and Zumba, both are popular choices among people who want to stay fit and lose weight.

Even though both can be dubbed as high intensity work outs, there has been a debate over which exercise form helps in losing weight and shedding calories faster.

While some feel aerobics involves lot of movements and helps in getting rid of the stubborn fat, many people vouch for zumba as it also strengthens the core.

Traditional workouts can get a bit mundane and repetitive, and there hasn't really been an alternative that is both fun as well as a big calorie-burner. That's where zumba comes in. The Latin-dance inspired group workout has been embraced by 12 million people in 125 countries and has been taken very well by Indians. It keeps you active and burns calories quite effectively as compared to other forms of workouts, said Gurgaon-based fitness expert Shalini Gulati.

However, fitness experts say aerobics gives more strength and has lots of cardio involved. The music is more of a fast beats which does not involve a high low beat its steady fast beat.

Aerobics to keep fit – Tembisan

Members of the community during an aerobics session at Sam Hlalele Community Hall.

Professional dancer and fitness instructor Tebogo Malunga offers aerobics classes for youth, adults and veterans at Sam Hlalele Community Hall next to Tembisa Plaza from Monday to Thursday.

The classes are held from 5pm to 6pm.

Malunga, the founder of Bodycom Fitness Club, started the aerobics classes in an effort to help locals keep fit and lose weight.

He said his club strives to encourage members of the community, churches and schools to live a healthy lifestyle through exercising and eating healthy.

Malunga said he started the club in 2014, hoping to change lives in the community by fighting drugs, alcohol and chronic diseases.

I enjoy giving lessons to the community and most people who come and join us push themselves hard to get used to the idea of exercising. Eventually they make it a point not to miss a session. I am proud of them because they give me courage and they are eager to try new routines, said Malunga.

Malunga is encouraging locals to join the class, as he says staying active is vital.

Regular exercise helps seniors with blood circulation, mental health and physical strength, especially as they are more prone to get diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as obesity. Keeping fit should be part of everyones daily routine. I encourage people to eat healthy as this also plays a major role in physical health, added Mr Malunga.

Bodycom Fitness Club is targeting young people from 18 to 35 years, adults and elderly people.

Aerobics, resistance training and tai chi can boost brain health in the elderly – Hindustan Times

Posted: April 25, 2017 at 10:40 am

without comments

A combination of both aerobics and resistance exercise can significantly boost brain power in people aged over 50, claims a new review.

Carried out by researchers from the University of Canberra, Australia, the new research is the most comprehensive review of the available evidence to date, with the team looking at 39 studies published up to the end of 2016.

The team analysed the effect of various types, intensities, and durations of exercise on the brain health of the over 50s, including aerobic exercise, resistance training such as weights, multi-component exercise that combines both aerobic and resistance training, tai chi, and yoga.

Cognitive abilities assessed in the review included overall brain capacity, attention, executive function (mental process which help achieve goals), memory, and working memory (processing information in the short-term).

The results showed that aerobic exercise significantly improved cognitive abilities, with resistance training having a significant effect on executive function, memory, and working memory.

For those wondering how much they need to do, the team found that a session lasting between 45 and 60 minutes, of moderate to vigorous intensity, and of any frequency, had a positive effect on cognitive function.

In addition, these positive effects were seen no matter what the current state of the participants brain health.

The team also found that tai chi helped improved cognitive abilities, supporting previous findings. The team did point out however that the analysis was based on just a few studies and the findings would need to be confirmed in a larger study, although the results do suggest that exercises such as tai chi could provide benefits for those who are unable to do more intense forms of physical activity.

The team now believe that the evidence from their review is strong enough to recommend prescribing both aerobic and resistance exercises to improve brain health in the over 50s.

The findings can be found published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Rutherglen’s Throwback Thursday: Aerobics in Burnhill, music prizes at Stonelaw and a night at the darts… – Scottish Daily Record

We start this week's look back in time with some high energy routines.

The Reformer reported that there was an aerobics craze sweeping Burnhill in April 1993.

The sports centre hosted many youngsters who were eager to try step aerobics, and the event proved so popular that the classes were set to be held on a regular basis.

The day featured youngsters trying out pom-pom classes as well, aided by a techno music soundtrack.

Music of a different sort had featured at Stonelaw High 10 years previously.

A group of pupils there had been hitting the right notes in April 1983.

For three senior girls, Jane Brotherston (17), Wilma Henderson (16) and Helen Stewart (17) all from fifth year, sang Mozarts aria Say Ye Who Borrow, and attained extremely high marks at the Cambuslang Music Festival.

Wilma was first, Helen second and Jane third.

Second year Gillian Henry was first in the junior section of the singing contest.

Pictured are (from left) Wilma, Helen, Gillian and Jane

Lastly, we stay with 1983, where a group of local women had been in top flight.

The Bower Bar in Rutherglen had held a darts competition over the Christmas period.

Coming out on top was Kate Monahan (right), who won a trophy for her efforts.

Runner-up was Martha Friars (left), while pictured in the centre is Nan Brannigan, the manageress of the Bower bar.

COCONUT CREEK (CBSMiami) For anyone recovering from knee or hip replacement surgery as well as back pain, physical therapyis as close as your neighborhood pool.

CBS4 Meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez discovered a group of retirees in Coconut Creek who keep moving in order to stay fit and healthy, plus theyre happily recovering from painful conditions at their community pool with regular water aerobics classes.

Finding a suitable fitness routine once you reach the golden years can be a challenge, but for Patty Snyder and her class, there is no excuse when it comes to staying healthy.

I usually say my formula for the day is combine the air temperature and the water temperature, and if its over 150 degrees, were having a class!

CBS4 met Patty, a volunteer water aerobics instructor and her group through our Moving U Campaign. Many members of the group have overcome health obstacles and now use water aerobics as a way to keep themselves moving every morning at the Township Aquatic Center.

Ive had double knee replacements and this was the best exercise and a couple of other ladies have had knees replaced, hips replaced, we have had cancer survivors, they all say its the best way to exercise, explained Patty.

Patty is a retired high school math teacher who began the class as a student. When the previous teacher couldnt continue, Patty jumped in.

I guess the teacher in me just came through because I didnt mind calling the exercises, we tried giving me a day off on Wednesdays and calling it wacky Wednesdays where they each had to name one of the exercises, but I found some werent coming on Wednesdays because they were afraid to call it, explained Patty. So I said okay Ill take it over again. And I did give them homework, they had to go on the computer and find exercises.

Holly Rose is also a volunteer water aerobics instructor who has been teaching for over 20 years. She is recovering from a hip replacement surgery and said deep water aerobics is an important part of her physical therapy.

I feel normal in the water, I do. You keep your aerobic rate up, youre steady on your feet, its a wonderful exercise. You dont sweat like land, land hurts sometimes. Water doesnt hurt; its good for every part of us.

Patty and Holly participate in daily classes, weather permitting, from 9:00-10:00am at the Township Aquatic Center in Coconut Creek.

City refinances Yacht Club, approves water aerobics classes Port … – Port isabel south padre

ByDINA ARVALOPort Isabel-South Padre Press editor@portisabelsouthpadre.com

During a special meeting of the city commission Wednesday, the City of Port Isabel unanimously approved the re-funding of a loan on the Yacht Club, the formation of a water aerobics class at the community pool and passed several resolutions opposing proposed state legislation.

First up was a re-funding of a variable interest Texas Leverage Loan on the historic Port Isabel Yacht Club. Its been going up it was two-point-something (percent interest) when they first got the loan, its up to 4 percent now, City Manager Jared Hockema explained to the commission.

As such, the Economic Development Corporation (EDC ) hired a financial adviser to explore refinancing options and were able to secure a lower interest loan at a fixed rate. They have been able to secure a purchaser at a 3 percent fixed rate, so its a savings, of course, from what were paying right now, Hockema said. The lower interest rate would generate a savings of more than $100,000 over the life of the loan, he said.

In other news, a suggestion from a resident ultimately spurred the Commission to approve the offering of water aerobics classes at the Citys public pool.

A social fitness programme was conducted for the monks of Tango monastery on April 8.

The programme was initially started by the Ministry of Health to promote the importance of physical activity at the work place and to reduce non communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, among others.

The aerobic session is included in the programme. Aerobics is a physical exercise that includes rhythmicaerobicexercises with stretching and strength training routines. Besides boosting the immune system, it also helps in regulating blood pressure and cholesterol. A dietary plan is provided to the participants apart from the exercise.

Fitness trainer, Dorji Tsheten of Dosten Consultancy Service, said that it was observed that the monks do not get much physical activity in their daily lives and so he approached the principal of the monastery to talk about the health benefits of aerobics.

The programme is currently being conducted at the Ministry of Works and Human Settlement, an Anim Dratsang, Gidakom hospital and the Anti Corruption Commission.

Due to the lack of funds, the programme is being carried out mostly in Thimphu. Dorji Tsheten said that he is interested to introduce such social fitness programmes in all the 20 dzongkhags in the future.
