Butts, Gorilla Aerobics, and a Boring Winner: Everything That Happened At the Wonderfully Absurd Eurovision Song … – SPIN

The annual spectacle of the Eurovision Song Contest brings a much-needed shot of absurdity-tinged sincerity to pop. Each year, countries from all over Europeas well as more far-flung territories like Israel and, as of 2015, Australiasend songs that they feel represent their countrys pop zeitgeist to go head-to-head against each other, putting themselves at the mercy of home viewers and expert juries.

On Saturday, the 61st running of Eurovisionwhich spans months of local decision-making, regional competitions, and lots of pop hits and missescame to a close in Kyiv, Ukraine. At the end of the nearly four-hour, 26-entrant pageant, the winner was a simple song, simply sung. Portugals Salvador Sobral emerged victorious with Amar Pelos Dois, a sleepy, string-assisted ballad about finding lost love that was written by his siser, Luisa. (Luisa and Salvador sang the song as a duet for the show-closing victory-lap performance, which at least added a smidge of tension to the occasion.)

For Eurovision, which so often blends national traditions with a theatricalspirit, Portugals victory represented a shift of sorts. Sobrals impassioned railing against disposable music during his surprised acceptance speech was a bit bizarregiven Eurovisions long historyof foisting incredible songsand ones that are far lessself-serious thanSobrals balladon the pop consciousness.French louche Serge Gainsbourg penned France Galls y-y delight Poupe de cire, poupe de son, which won the competition in 1965 for Luxembourg. Swedish pop titans ABBA made their global breakthrough with the love-as-war confection Waterloo, which conquered the competition in 1974. Finnish pomp-metal revivalists Lordis 2006 entry Hard Rock Hallelujah brought together pop craftsmanship, metallic pizzazz, and hulking costumes. Loreens skyscraper-vaulting Euphoria, the 2012 winner for Sweden, reaches EDM-pop heights that the likes of David Guetta and Zedd are still trying to match years later; ditto Norwegian Margaret Bergers goth-tinged I Feed You My Love, which lost that year to Danish singer Emmilie De Forests not-bad Only Teardrops.

Saturdays competition had its own pop high points, too. Francesco Gabannis entry for Italy, Occidentalis Karma, was a slight piece of electropop elevated by its staging as an actual, and gorilla-inclusive, aerobics class; Robin Bengtssons Max Martin manqu I Cant Go On, the entry from (obviously) Sweden, was marred by an unfortunate use of freakin' in its chorus, but was goofily performedwith treadmills; the home team entrant O. Torvald offered an alternate-universe fate for Linkin Park on Time; Armenia fused modern dance with goth on its entry, Artsviks Fly With Me; and Hungarys Joci Ppai, on Origo, threw down a Roma rap. A couple of songs hewed a bit too closely to current pop trendsGermanys entrant was so reminiscent of Sias EDM-leaning work that it could have been called Titanium (Alloy), while Spains entry, Manel Navarros Do It For Your Lover, came off like an unholy union between Ed Sheerans aw-shucksiness and Sugar Rays island breeziness.

Funnily enough, the nights best song straight-up was a ballad that was stripped down in the manner of its winner; City Lights, the simmering Belgian entry, showed off the steel-in-velvet voice of its singer Blanche, with her visible nerves adding an extra shot of tension to the proceedings.

Eurovisions initial mission involved literally uniting Europe with the power of songit was established in 1956 as a way to bring the continents countries together in the wake of World War II. But as with any high-stakes multinational competition subject to human prejudice, politics of varying degrees of seriousness did popup here and there. Russias entrant, Julia Samoylova, was banned from traveling to Kyiv by Ukranian officials after they learned shed performed in the onetime Ukranian, now-Russian-annexed territory of Crimea. Last years winner Jamalas performance of the storming 1944which was largely viewed as an implicit protest of Russias moves in Crimea, as its lyrics focus on her ancestors being deported by then-Soviet Union ruler Joseph Stalin during World War IIwas interrupted by an Australian flag-wearing invader who briefly showed his rear end to the audience. (He, it turned out, was not Australian, but Ukranian serial disruptor Vitalii Sediuk, who made headlinesin 2014 for scuffling with Brad Pitt.) Sobral, meanwhile, sported a pro-refugee shirt at a press conference following the first semifinal earlier this year, earning a rebuke from the European Broadcasting Union, which puts on Eurovision.

The British paper the Telegraph broke down the political nature of the voting, which is split between jury votes and viewer phone-ins, and which has its own persistent wrinkles despite receiving a serious makeover in 2016. Greece and Cyprus have a mutual back-scratching relationship that continued this year, with each country once again giving the other their highest 21 points; Meanwhile, the Irish Timess recap of who Ireland gave its points to had the subhead the UK wont be happy. (British critic Tom Ewing gave a very convincing presentation on the competitions relationship to the United Kingdoms decision to leave the European Union last month.)

Its tempting to view Sobrals commanding win as a statement in favor of something like niceness, or at least a soothing-sounding song backed by a feel-good story in a time of increasingly apparent global tumult; other Eurovision watchers in my circle blamed its victory on the hokiness espoused by recent authenticity poseslike La La Land. Either way, his victory means that Eurovision heads to Portugal for its 2018 final, which will no doubt combine soaring hooks, winks to local customs, and the occasional moment that reminds the viewers at home and in the arena why music was once deemed a worthy vehicle for repairing international wounds.

Brownsburg Parks highlight Fitness Month – The Hendricks County Flyer

Posted: May 9, 2017 at 6:46 pm

without comments

BROWNSBURG Continuing an annual tradition, President Donald Trump recently declared May as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.

As a way to increase awareness about its fitness programs, Brownsburg Parks is taking advantage of the proclamation and working to promote its programs during the month and beyond.

I think it [fitness month] is a really cool idea, Mark Callaway, recreation coordinator, said. All these health issues that are seemingly getting worse, just having a month dedicated to fitness is important to keep in everyones minds that its not just a fad, its something that should be continued throughout the year.

The parks main classes are for active adults and general group fitness classes. Those 55 and older can often regularly be found in the yoga, cardio classic and morning stretch classes, mainly because they are offered in the mornings.

There is also the Pathfinders Walking Club that meets in the mornings.

One plus the Brownsburg Parks fitness classes have for older adults is the tie to the SilverSneakers program. This is a healthcare based benefit for those who are 60 and older and allows them to come to the classes for free, Callaway said. SilverSneakers includes unlimited access to every participating gym and fitness center in the network, according to the programs website.

That [SilverSneakers] is a great way to get folks who may not have available funds to come to our classes, he said. They have that, they can come and participate in that class regardless of their ability to pay.

There are also water aerobics classes, which are popular among a variety of age groups. There are currently four water classes on the schedule water aerobics, aqua boot camp, gentle aqua and aqua cardio.

Those are growing classes, Callaway said.

A unique class offered by the parks department is ballroom social dancing. The next session will begin May 11.

We have two professional dance instructors, Callaway said. They have a pretty good following.

The classes have ranged anywhere from 10 to 20 couples, however individuals are welcome to come out as well.

Overall, the department is trying to grow its class offerings to better suit the community.

I think, in general, we are trying to increase not only the programs, but the enrollment in the programs, Callaway said.

There are currently three instructors who teach the classes: Dusty Dawn Teter focuses on the water aerobics classes, Regan Mosher-Rudolf teaches evening yoga and Judi Daniels teaches morning yoga and runs the Pathfinders Walking Club.

The instructors help set apart the Brownsburg Parks fitness classes from those offered at other facilities.

Not only are they certified, but they have a commitment to the Brownsburg community specifically," Callaway said. "They want to see our participants come back, grow, change, get healthier and I think thats probably what sets us apart, that personal community touch that maybe some other folks dont have."

The classes are designed for any age range and any ability level with a focus on a reasonable price and a quality program, he said.

To learn more about the Brownsburg Parks fitness classes or to enroll online, visit the website at brownsburgparks.com. Punch cards for three, five or 10 visits can also be purchased on site at any of the classes, except ballrooms social dancing.

By MUTHOKI MUMO

When you were a kid, were you ever asked what kind of superpower you would want?

I nod not because anyone ever asked me any such question but because Andrea Hartleys smile is so wide that I do not want to interrupt this train of thought.

Everyone responds flying. Everyone wants to fly, she says.

This, to Andrea, is the essence of the aerial aerobics class shes been teaching twice a week for the last five weeks. And she is right.

When I try aerial aerobics, I am reminded of those moments when I have come as close as one can to flight without a plane: when I was pushed too high by my sister on a swing or when my father picked me up as a young girl and swang me around until I thought I might vomit.

This feeling, hanging upside down suspended from the rafters by two ribbons of fabric, is terror. Then when I relax, let go of the fabric and my body swings freely, this feeling becomes exhilaration. Just like flying.

Aerial aerobics is an exercise. The burn in my arms, the sheen on my forehead and the sweat leaving an itchy trail down my back attest to that. However, when Andrea performs aerial aerobics, it looks more like art.

Gym-goers use two lengths of fabric, the silks as they are called in the lingo, to support body weight as they carry out gravity-defying moves while suspended mid-air.

Andrea started out with aerial silks four years ago when she was still a university student. When she moved to East Africa she brought her silks with her.

Some of her earliest students were her roommates and her partner, Neel Chandaria, who now helps her run her classes. Today, shes miles away from that university student who let loose an expletive when she faced her first silks.

On a Wednesday afternoon at CrosfitKwetu gym in Gigiri, Nairobi, Andrea spirals, does splits in mid-air, and inverts her body all with the grace of a dancer.

Her moves are reminiscent of a Cirque du Soleil performance. Only the redness of her face reveals the strain it takes to perform these moves. This workout, she says, elegantly brings together gymnastics, yoga, and strength training.

She separates her class into two: the beginners and the advanced students. The other beginners put me to shame. Michelle inverts herself on her first try. Molly claims that this is her first class but the ease with which she navigates the silks leaves me suspicious.

When it is my turn, my first task is lift my body off the ground. Easy, I think. The silks go round my wrists.

Fold your knees to your chest and lift yourself up, Andrea tells me.

Not so easy. I am able to hold myself suspended off the ground for about half a second before I let go, nearly collapsing onto the cushioned floor.

My fellow beginners clap: Good job. Youve got it. Try again. They are not being insincere. This is the ambience in Andreas class. They urge each other along. They clap. They high-five me when I manage to fold my feeble, soft body into even the most basic of tricks.

This cheering is infectious. When Michelle performs a new move, I feel a sudden burst of joy, as though this achievement were my own. My turn again on the silks and Michelle gives me a quick lesson.

Its all about the core, she tells me. Tense those muscles up as you lift yourself up. This is problematic because I have less of a core in my middle and more of a mixture of chocolate and fat.

But the benefits of class begin to make themselves known early on. By the end of my first session, I have found not only my core but my biceps too: I know they exist because they hurt.

Andrea tells me that combining aerial aerobics with other strength-training and flexibility focused exercises can make the going easier.

Despite my misgivings, aerial aerobics seems not-so-hard to pick up. The women in the advanced segment , swinging themselves fearlessly, have had three, four of Andreas sessions. And the classes are growing. Andrea is about to begin classes at Mom3ntum gym in Westlands.

Hanging upside down turns out to be very good for clarity of thought. As I shriek in fear, I know that I will be back.

I want to fly again, and perhaps this time I will be more of a graceful swan than a confused chicken.

Anti-Trump aerobics class organised to mark US President’s first 100 days – The Independent

Posted: May 4, 2017 at 11:42 am

without comments

For Americans opposing the presidency of Donald Trump and unsure how best to channel their anger about his pledges to scrap Obamacare, limit womens reproductive rights or the proposed travel ban from Muslim-majority countries, there is now a solution.

A San Francisco organisationlaunched anti-Trump aerobics to mark 100 Days of the real estate moguls presidency.

The hour-long class included an aerobics routine devised from some of Mr Trumps most common gestures and manners and organises said it would tackle the anxiety of state change through embodied protest.

A video of the class has now been shared by non-profit news outlet Mother Jones who described the scene which involved class members wearing Democrat blue sweatbands and neck ties signature of the President himself.

Moves included participants pairing up and using their red ties against each other while shouting: Dont build a wall. Other movements included lunges to the side complete with red tie.

Commonplace for exercise classes, the instructor also shouted out motivational, encouraging messages for class members to repeat back to her. However, naturally these ones were more along the anti-Trump, political lines and included: Dont buy Ivankas shoes!, Dont read his tweets and F*** Mar-a-Lago!

One participant told Mother Jones: This is a wonderful example of bringing levity and community to the resistance.

The class was organised by 100 Days of Action which organised a hundred day plan to counteract the Presidents first 100 days in office. In addition to the exercise class, volunteers knitted caps for the science marks, held a Black Lives Matter film night to mark Black History Month in February and a dance party to music and DJs from the seven countries affected by Mr Trumps travel ban.

Army Emphasizes Strength, Aerobics in New Physical Assessment Test – Club Industry

Posted: at 11:42 am

without comments

The U.S. Army has implemented a new physical fitness test aimed at better preparing recruits for the challenges of military life.

The Occupational Physical Assessment Test (OPAT) went into effect Jan. 3 and focuses on aerobics and lower- and upper-body strength, Army spokesperson Jennifer Johnson told Club Industry. It will also allow recruiters to more accurately evaluate applicants overall fitness levels prior to initial training.

We anticipate that the OPAT will lower attrition, which can lead to money saved, fewer injuries, fewer lost training seats, and other positive impacts that will contribute to overall Army readiness, Johnson said.

OPAT includes four, gender-neutral tests, according to Military.com:

OPAT standards vary based on a participants designated military occupational specialty (MOS). The Black category is hardest and only administered to those with heavy physical demands, while Gray is for significant demands and Gold is for moderate.

The test will be administered to 80,000 recruits and thousands of cadets this year alone, according to Military.com. Recruits may request to retake the OPAT if they fail. Multiple unsuccessful attempts may result in a MOS renegotiationand subsequent category downgrade, such as Gray to Gold.

The OPAT was created to better match prospective soldiers to careers in the Army where they are most likely to succeed and meet the Army's needs, Johnson said.

Several groups, including PHIT America, have warned about the danger to the country due to the unfit state of 70 percent of youth to serve in the military, according to the Mission: Readiness report put together in 2015 by 600 military leaders.

Indore: Enriching mind, body and soul through fitness routine and good mood sessions, Aerobics club Meghdoots 7-day free summer camp is gaining attention from different age groups.

Following the rigorous fun workouts, trainer Jitesh Manwani addressed the gathering in the good mood programme.

Pressing on three ways to keep a good mood, Manwani said, There are three aspects Physiology, Focus and Language that must be taken care of. He explained that body and mind are totally interdependent, hence correct posture is must.

Alert posture leads to alert mind, hence, maintain correct body posture while standing, walking, sitting, driving and riding, he said.

While discussing focus, Manwani talked about focusing on activity. Focus on efforts not results, on playing not winning, on purpose not success, on relations not duties, he said.

Discussing language, he quoted on use of positive words. Replace words like: Problem with Challenge Angry with Uncomfortable I hate with I prefer, he said.

Further, during the camp zumba trainers Amit Chauhan and Rekha Chauhan trained fitness freaks on Rock music of Hollywood. This was the first experience of our Aerobics Club Members that they learn Zumba with Hollywood music. Exercise on musical theme forces a person to concentrate, hence building focus, Chauhan said.

Exercise Your Freedom of Speech With Anti-Trump Aerobics … – Mother Jones

Alley Cat Books, located in the heart of San Francisco's Mission District, is ordinarily a quiet space for book lovers to peruse multicolored shelves for their next literary adventure. But on Sunday, the small bookstore buzzed with energy as a group of leggings-clad Bay Area residents protested Donald Trump's presidency in the form of a sweaty cardio workout.

"We are here because in this era, in this nation, we need to use our full bodies to resist fascism!" cried Margaret McCarthy, one of two organizers of the event.

"This is a wonderful example of bringing levity and community to the resistance."

The group was assembled for a rigorous hour of Anti-Trump Aerobicsthe final event in an artist- and activist-organized series called 100 Days Action. The calendar of events, which kicked off on January 20 with an Inaugural Ball, responded tit-for-tat to the Trump administration's activities in its first 100 days. Events included Hats for Science, where participants knitted caps for the Science March, and Black Lives Matter at ATA, a film night about racial justice in honor of Black History Month. The night before the aerobics event, the collective also threw a 100 Days No Ban Dance Party, featuring music from the seven countries targeted in Trump's blocked travel ban.

"This is a wonderful example of bringing levity and community to the resistance," said Vanessa Schneider, an aerobics participant, before the session. "I really hope it includes some of Trump's specific movements, so I can expand my repertoire of gestures."

"Who doesn't want to sweat a little bit while you laugh?" another participant, Rachel Fairbanks, added.

McCarthy, a performance artist, and Liat Berdugo, an artist, writer, and assistant professor at the University of San Francisco, led the attendees in an uproarious routine involving Democratic-blue sweatbands, Trumpian red ties, and rhythmic slogans.

"Don't buy Ivanka's shoes!" McCarthy called out, marching to the beat. "Don't buy Ivanka's shoes!" the participants echoed.

"Fuck Mar-a-Lago!" she continued, swinging a tie like a golf club. "Fuck Mar-a-Lago!" they mimicked.

"Don't read his tweets," Berdugo said in hushed voice, using the tie to shield her eyes.

Each new slogan ended with cheers and whoops.

"The session did a great job of highlighting Trump's weird affectations, both physical and verbal," Schneider said at the end of the workout.

As the session wound down, McCarthy and Berdugo asked each participant to knot their red ties together to form a large circle.

"Art can provide oxygen in a situation where it feels like there is no oxygen," said Ingrid Rojas Contreras, a 100 Days Action organizer, as the attendees picked up their bags and headed back, rejuvenated, into their Sunday afternoons.

Anti-Trump aerobics: a new way to protest Golden Gate Xpress – Golden Gate Xpress

Posted: at 3:45 pm

Blue sweatbands, red leg warmers, 80s Madonna workout music and the collective chant of dont build a wall were all part of a free anti-Trump aerobics class hosted at Alley Cat Book store in the Mission District Sunday afternoon.

The 50-minute class, led by SF State theatre and English literature alumna Margaret McCarthy and University of San Francisco art professor and artist Liat Burdugo, is part of 100 Days Action, a call to thinkers, artists, and writers to propose gestures that can be carried out either at home or in the world, according to the website.

Ingrid Rojas-Contreras, one of the organizations co-founders, said the actions are a creative way to express emotion and opposition against Trump during his first 100 days in office.

Burdugo and McCarthy were approached by organizers and asked to participate. Their unique response to the call was an aerobics class, according to Rojas-Contreras.

We wanted to create a platform that responded to Trumps first 100 days and creating artistic actions like this one, Rojas-Contreras said. The air is so tense right now, whenever we have a way that art can respond in a fun way, I really enjoy seeing the after effects of that.

Burdugo, who has experience creating and leading conceptual aerobic classes, decided that a creative outlet that encourages an embodied protest would be a good contribution to 100 Days Action events.

The anti-Trump aerobics session was the finale of 100 Days of Action, and guided participants through a series of dance moves and stretches allowing them to experience physical protest and exercise suppressed negative endorphins built up as a result of Trumps presidency, according to McCarthy and Burdugo.

The space that this aerobics fills is very light-hearted, McCarthy said.

It allows us to still be engaged with the things that are happening in our country right now, but also for allowing endorphins to flow from our body and make our body feel good and to approach these issues with a spirit of joy and laughing at the power, rather than getting to bogged down by it.

Burdugo emphasized that the event was also designed to help participants maintain mental endurance that can be worn

Anti Trump Aerobic class participants making an X with ties symbolizing blocking President Donald Stump at Alley Cat Bookstore in SF on April.30, 2017

down with tiresome and stressful emotions that can come from actively protesting and leading a resistance.

We believe that resistance takes endurance; it is not something that happens in a single moment, that you do one day and stop doing the next day, Burdugo said. One thing that aerobics does historically, is that it builds your physical endurance and for people participating in aerobics, were kind of building this metaphor that resistance takes endurance.

The class was held in the skylighted gallery room of the bookstore and kicked off with the Bee Gees Stayin Alive. Burdugo and McCarthy began the class with hamstring stretches and handed out an aerobic class prop a red Trump-like tie, to all of the participants, which was used throughout the class.

Burdugo and McCarthy both wore coordinated black leotards, leggings and red sweatbands and leg warmers, which McCarthy described workout attire inspired by vintage, Jane Fonda meets Donald Trump.

The instructors led approximately 30 yoga pant-wearing, sweat-dripping participants in unique stretches like holding both ends of the tie tightly, bending down to the toes and making a swinging motion to mimic the stroke of a golf club. Participants chanted fuck Mar-a-Lago during exercises to poke fun at the president and his lavish vacation home and golf course.

Another move had attendees partner up and make an X with their ties, pivoting back and forth chanting dont build a wall.

Rachel Fairbanks, a San Francisco resident, wanted to attend the aerobics class to have some fun and share a space with people who were also trying to cope with current events and the presidency.

After the election I tried to figure out ways that I could make myself not go crazy, so this idea is actually coupling a lot of things that I really enjoy, which is making fun of Donald Trump and exercise, Fairbanks said. I know there is going to be like-minded people here, so what better way to spend a Sunday afternoon?

Fairbanks said she is worried about everything on Trumps agenda, especially womens rights and immigration.

Im worried about health care, Im worried about everything, Fairbanks said. I had to take two days off from work after the election because I was so upset. So I just want to have fun and I feel like marches and protests can get very emotional and (aerobics) is just people coming to have fun and relax.

SF State graduate student Lea Troeh was drawn to the class looking for creative ways to resisting andexercise her brain.

(The aerobics class) is not just a thing for hippies or for liberals, but is just something fun everyone can relate to and is a relatable way to express disagreement, Troeh said.

McCarthy and Burdugo wanted the class to be a refreshing, cathartic and hopeful experience for those who moved along side them, red ties and all.

One of my hopes for this event is that we can have a bit of catharsis and much more like the feeling of getting out of the pool after a really refreshing swim and you go, ah I feel great, refreshed and I am ready for the next thing, McCarthy said.
