YMCA and Baptist Health offers water aerobics classes – Hopkinsville Kentucky New Era

Posted: May 31, 2017 at 11:41 am

without comments

For those who are still looking to get in shape for the summer, but may not be able to do the harder workouts, theres water aerobics.

It is offered in two places in town, one is at the YMCA on the Eagle Way and the other is in Baptist Health Occupational Medicine on Clinic Drive.

For Baptist Health, they offer classes at noon on Monday, Wednesday and Friday all year round. Its in a heated pool, which is at around 90 degrees. Britteny Richardson, exercise physiologist and instructor of the class, said anyone can join at any time.

She added they are looking for another instructor so they can add evening classes to the schedule.

To join, they can either get a class pass, which is like a punch card that allows up to 12 classes. Anyone interested can also because a member, which costs $20 a month after a $50 entry fee. That gives the user full access to the pool when its open along with any classes in the pool and the walking track. Or someone can pay $8 a class.

The sessions last about 45 minutes long, she explained, and they try to target all of the muscle groups.

We dont do a whole lot of cardio, because its so hot, she explained.

She uses dumbbells for the core muscles and have Silversneaker Splash class on Fridays, which is when they use a kick board. That will work a lot on the arms and legs.

Most of the class will be held in the water thats only three to five feet deep. There will also be some work at the end of the session in the deeper water, which goes to 8 feet, but those who cant swim can either skip on that part or use floatation devices. She added many of her students cant swim.

Richardson recommended this kind of exercise for those who have arthritis, joint problems or recently was released from treatment.

She explained this kind of workout gives this who cant work out on land an opportunity to still do it just in the water.

This also helps with balance, because Richardson does do some exercises to help with that. The heated water also helps relax the muscles as they work. It will still be a hard workout because Richardson likes to challenge her students. She said the sore muscles may not be felt during the class, but the students will feel it afterward or the next day.

She would stay up on the side of the pool and out of the water while instructing. That is so she can monitor her students easily in case they are doing something wrong.

For more information, call the center at 270 707-3390.

As for the YMCA, classes began Tuesday. Water aerobics instructor Carolyn Altman explained her morning classes use resistance, dumbbells and noodles. Her class also has no music playing, which is helpful for those who dont like music playing while they workout.

Classes are 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. t 5:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday. Jenny Rush is the afternoon instructor, who will play music.

Altman said everyone would benefit from water aerobics and is available for all ages.

The classes are held in the outside pool and will be canceled for bad weather, such as thunder and lightening.

To join, a YMCA membership is needed. Pricing can be viewed on the YMCAs website.

‘Overwatch’ Anniversary Event Skins: Easter Eggs Include Dances, Classic Anime, Aerobics and More – International Business Times

Posted: May 24, 2017 at 7:47 am

without comments

Overwatchs Anniversary Event might be a little underwhelming, but it still has a ton of cool emotes, sprays, icons and Legendary skins. The concept artists and developers worked to release 11 new Legendary skins, each one more exciting than the last. Zarya and Hanzo mains, who have been neglected in previous events, got the skins of their dreams. Bastion players who like NASCAR now have a cosmetic that shows off their interests. Thats just on the surface, when you dig deeper you find even cooler secrets and Easter eggs hidden in these skins.

Here are just a few of the Easter eggs Ive found while checking out the skins and emotes released in the Overwatch Anniversary Event.

Jazzy Lucio

Drop the beat and play some epic sax! Photo: Blizzard

In the developer Update for this event, Game Director Jeff Kaplan said he wanted to give Lucio mains new songs to play around with. If you pick Jazzy Lucio in a game, both of his EDM bopping beats have been replaced by jazz covers. The songs are pretty enjoyable to listen to on their own, and if youre an old geezer like me who just didnt vibe with his DJ persona, this is a must-buy skin.

Whoever worked on this skin went the extra mile, theres even a musical scale replacing the meter on the back of Lucios gun.

Beekeeper Mei

I pulled Beekeeper Mei in my first Loot Box, then proceeded to get nothing for the rest of the batch Photo: Blizzard

Meis suit looks bulky like a beekeepers, so maybe it just made sense to make a skin with her in the actual suit. Im not sure its that simple, though; Im convinced that this Legendary cosmetic is actually a reference to a very old Overwatch design. In one of the original concept arts released for Overwatch, theres a tiny guy in a yellow hazmat suit. The coloring and style is reminiscent of Beekeeper Mei, though it could just be a coincidence. Still, Im going to keep my tinfoil hat on and believe that this isnt just an accident -- even if shes wearing all white.

Sentai Genji

Sentai Genji, the Green Ranger Photo: Blizzard

Did you know that the Power Rangers show you loved as a kid was actually just recut footage of a Japanese television show called Super Sentai? Heres a virtual homage to the show filled with spandex, rubber monsters and has been running on television longer than Ive been alive.

Dances Galore

To celebrate the birthday of Overwatch, concept artists went into the minds of the games heroes and asked what would they dance like if you saw them at a party? Turns out, its a lot of memes and references to really old videos.

Zarya is flexing her muscles to the 1988 National Aerobic Championship number. Theres a lot of spandex in that gif, so be warned.

Meis Anniversary Event dance is a reference to the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya that my girlfriend couldnt wait to tell me about.

Everyone else just seems to be busting a move, or whatever youd call Reapers foot tap. Junkrats rocking the MC Hammer Hammertime dance, Roadhog is dancing the cabbage patch, Mercy is reminding me of all the Bar Mitzvahs I went to with that hustle and so many more.

What have you uncovered in the Overwatch Anniversary Event that I might have missed? Tell us in the comments.

‘Fat and frail’ seniors benefit from right exercise combo – ABC News

Posted: May 17, 2017 at 9:41 pm

without comments

Heavy seniors who want to lose pounds safely shouldn't skip the weight machines or the treadmill, new research suggests.

Experts have worried about recommending weight loss to older, obese people because it speeds up bone and muscle loss, increasing the danger of falls and broken bones. Losing weight plus aerobic activity and strength training improved their health more than dieting plus either type of exercise alone.

The results suggest a combination of exercises is the safest approach, and may have big implications for helping people continue to live independently as they age. Medicare, the U.S. health insurance program for people 65 and older, now covers behavioral therapy for weight loss and some plans offer gym memberships.

"It is the worst of both worlds, being fat and frail," said Dr. Dennis T. Villareal of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, who led the study under a grant from the National Institute on Aging.

More than a third of Americans ages 65 and older are obese. Obesity can make the elderly vulnerable to medical problems, but losing weight can worsen frailty by hastening muscle and bone loss.

The study, published Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine, involved 141 older obese people who were randomly assigned to a diet-and-exercise program. They scored in the frail range on a standard test used with seniors.

One group did aerobics such as treadmill walking. Another did strength training with weight machines. A third group did aerobics and strength training. All exercised three times a week.

A control group didn't diet or exercise and only attended monthly nutrition classes.

After six months, all the groups except the do-nothing group had lost weight, about 19 pounds on average.

The combination and aerobics-only groups built their ability to use oxygen most efficiently, which can increase endurance. The combination and strength-only groups preserved the most lean mass and bone.

The health differences showed up in follow-up testing where participants did a series of nine tasks including picking up a penny, standing up from a chair and climbing stairs.

Most improved was the combination group with a 21 percent average increase in scores compared to 14 percent improvement in the aerobics-only and strength-only groups.

"It's never too late to change lifelong unhealthy habits," Villareal said.

Minor injuries such as knee pain and shoulder pain among the exercisers were not enough to outweigh the benefits, he said.

The study excluded people with severe heart disease and other serious health problems, so the results apply only to people well enough to start an exercise program.

"You get more bang for your buck with doing both types of training, especially when it comes to improving frailty scores," said Dr. Lawrence Appel of Johns Hopkins University, who was not involved in the study.
