Panel of Judges Blind Taste-Tested 15 Vegan Products to Reveal Best Plant-Based Burger in the UK
Fifteen plant-based burgers had their identities hidden and were served to a panel of testers at Good Housekeeping in the UK, with each burger being judged on its appearance, aroma, taste, and texture. The tested burgers came from several UK supermarkets as well as respected brands such as Vivera and Biona.
Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, in addition to winning Bronze at the Free From Awards 2020, Lidls W/O Meat Vegan Burger came number one in the Best Veggie Burger category. The burgers retail for just 1.99 and were regarded as superior to brands renowned for quality such as Waitrose and Marks and Spencer.
The Lidl burger scored 84/100 and came with these comments: An authentic meat substitute with a thick and juicy bite, we loved the earthy beetroot and mushroom flavour and the subtle kick from the light spices. A substantial size, it had a lovely smoky aroma akin to being char-grilled on a BBQ.
Runners up were:
In 2nd place the M&S Plant Kitchen The No Beef Burger which retails in-store only, 3.50 for 320g.
In 3rd: Biona Sweet Potato Buckwheat Burger via Planet Organic, 4.40 for 160g.
4th Aldi with its Plant Menu BBQ Jackfruit Burgers available in-store only, 1.79 for 240g
5th Waitrose & Partners Vegan Jackfruit Burger available in stores and online from Waitrose & Partners, 2.99 for 200g.

This Vegan CBD Chocolate Is the Stress Buster You Need Right Now – LIVEKINDLY
Posted: at 8:45 pm
Chocolate is more than just an indulgent treat. It can help take the edge off of stress. Really. Studies show that regularly eating at least 70 percent dark chocolate may improve mood. And thats more important than you might think. Experts say high levels of stress (ie, bad moods) can cause headaches, irritability, and insomnia. But stress may be a precursor to other, more serious health conditions such as hypertension, according to the American Psychological Association.
Chocolate isnt the only stress buster of the botanical world. CBD, short for cannabidiol, is believed to alleviate stress and insomnia, though further research is needed. CBD is the second-most prevalent component of the cannabis plant after THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). Unlike THC, CBD doesnt give you a body or mind high.
Vegan chocolate brand Momos CBD founder and CEO Mo George-Payette set out to combine the health attributes of CBD and cacao (chocolate) for the perfectly delicious treat with benefits. With more than 33 years of experience in the natural products industry, she founded her company with simple guidelines: use only high-quality, ethically-sourced, non-GMO, and sustainable ingredients, and make them organic when possible.
Momos CBD hits all of those points. The vegan bars are made with 70 percent non-GMO Fair Trade cacao sourced from a co-op in the San Martin region of Peru. The collective is made up of small farms.
Knowing that our cacao is verified Fair Trade is crucial to ensure that the farmers producing the cacao are paid fairly and also treated ethically/respectfully for the hands-on manual labor that it takes to produce it, George-Payette tells LIVEKINDLY. This lends itself to helping to better their lives and create an amazing partnership.
George-Payette takes pride in the fact that the company is supporting farmers livelihoods by purchasing from a co-op.
The beauty of this sourcing, says George-Payette, is that we have a direct positive impact on their lives and sustainability of their communities for future generations.
She is also committed to using the best ingredients available. Every shipment of cacao is tested for purity to ensure that only the highest-quality beans are made into chocolate.
Momos bars are infused with non-GMO full-spectrum hemp CBD oil grown on a Colorado farm.
Each Momos CBD chocolate bar features 40mg of CBD and each batch is lab-tested for potency.
One bar comes with four squares of 10mg vegan CBD chocolate. According to George-Payette, you can enjoy it one square at a time or you can eat the entire bar in one sitting.
Momos CBD makes four flavors of chocolate bars, which are hand-crafted in small batches.
Almond features organic roasted Mediterranean almonds and a sprinkle of sea salt. Himalayan Pink Salt mixes smooth dark chocolate with a light sprinkle of pink salt crystals. Mint Cacao Crunch contrasts peppermint with crunchy cacao nibs. Vanilla Raspberry features tangy berries with creamy vanilla.
The brand also recently introduced vegan lip balm made from ethically traded coconut oil, plus cacao butter and hemp-derived CBD. Like the chocolates, its handmade in small batches.
Cacao is an amazing superfood known as Food of the Gods, says George-Payette. She adds that combined with the benefits of CBD, Momos CBD chocolate bars deliver a powerful synergistic dance for your taste buds that you feel at first bite. Its like a portable cacao ceremony, she says.

Is Paris Hilton Vegan? She Invests in Plant-Based Company. – The Beet
Posted: at 8:45 pm
Paris Hilton is one of the many celebrities to invest in a vegan start-up company, and we think "that's hot." as Paris Hilton would say.Hilton joined a group of other notable names on the roster of newinvestors in the parent company of Good Catch, a plant-based seafood brand, best known for itsvegan tuna, which The Beet had a chance to taste at last summer's Plant-Based Expo. We can tell you: It is delicious.
Joining the famous hotel heiress and one-time reality TV starin betting onGood Catch include investors Woody Harrelson, Shailene Woodley, and Lance Bass. "The company previously raised $36.8 million in a Series B financing round, and with the additional influx of funds is looking to expand its international distribution and product line," according to Totally Vegan Buzz.
So with this new venture, it begs the question: Is Paris Hilton Vegan?
The answer is no, not yet anyway. She recently launched aYouTube series calledCooking with Parisand the icons arelittle dancing fruits and vegetables. But don't be fooled by several sources that sayshe's vegetarian or plant-based:Hilton was spotted making lasagna with meat and an entire bowl of cheese.
However, weapplaudthe House of Wax star for having any association with veganism and investing in a plant-based startup. And just maybetasting Good Catch's crab cakes will spur her tobecome vegan. Or it could bethat she makes the leapafter eating Good Catch's plant-based tuna made with chickpeas, lentils, and algae oil, which gives a seafood flavor and is high in Omega-3. (For tuna lovers, this stuff isincredible.) Good Catch also has plans tointroduce a line offrozen meals and other delicious seafood products that includeplant-based crab cakes, plant-based Thai fish cakes, and plant-based fish burgers.
"Im excited to work with a food brand like Good Catch that leads with taste and aligns with my personal beliefs of making a difference for the animals and our planet," saysWoody Harrelson, devout vegan of 30 years.
Shailene Woodley adds, As an advocate for conservation, our planet, and its oceans, I work with organizations around the world to help combat climate change and protect our oceans from pollution. Thats why aligning with Good Catch feels like a natural extension of my continued work. They are a like-minded brand that is doing their part to have a positive impact on our oceans and our planet, all while creating delicious plant-based seafood alternatives. Im excited to see what innovative products they come up with next.
Recently Good Catch announced a distribution deal with Bumble Bee and a round of financing that topped $32 million, and the company stands t change the seascape for vegan fish alternatives. Meanwhile the public is moving away from tuna since it carries a heavy mercury load, and consumer awareness has made consumers avoid tuna since the fishing methods are threatening other species like dolphins and whales that get caught in the nets.
Good Catch only sells vegan Fish-Free Tuna as of right now, available in different flavors, the Mediterranean, Naked in Water, and Oil & Herbs. The tuna is only 90 calories per pouch and has 14 grams of plant-based protein. They sell products in over 4,500 retail outlets in the US and UK. Find them on Amazon, Target, and Thrive Market and make delicious vegan recipes like a tuna sandwich, salad nicoise, or tuna fish patties. Click here to make your purchase.

Mike Tyson, Vegan for 10 Years, Says "I’m In the Best Shape Ever" – The Beet
Posted: at 8:45 pm
Boxinglegend Mike Tyson says hes in the best shape ever and credits hisvegan diet and rigorous exercise routine for making it happen. Over the last decade, Tyson has been plant-based andexplains how his vegan diet has completely changed his life for the better.
UPDATE: The New York Post just reported that Tyson might have a new chance to fight again. The former Champ is expected to be offered $20 million to spar in the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship. So that would certainly make staying in shape worth it.
After retiring in 2005, Tyson was eating meat and drinking alcohol on a regular basis, he tells an interviewer. He was diagnosedas clinically obese in 2009 and toldTotally Vegan Buzz, I was so congested from all the drugs and bad cocaine, I could hardly breathe."Tyson also revealed in the interview, I had high blood pressure, was almost dying, and had arthritis."
In 2010, Tysontransformed his diet and ditched the meat in favor of a plant-based lifestyle, which he has continued ever since. Her also is completely clean and sober now, something he is proud to tell fans. The former heavyweight champ says everything he is doing to change his life and turn his health around is for his kids and his wife.
The 53-year old warrior explains,"Turning vegan helped me eliminate all those problems in my life, and adds, "I'm in the best shape ever." This kind of statement from such an iconic sports figurethat he is in better shape now than when he was competing and fighting and collecting belts and endorsementsissure to get attention the world over andspur more plant-curious athletes to try it out.
Last week, Tysonposted an Instagram videoboxing with hisnew coach,MMA trainer Rafael Cordeiro, and showed off hismuscular bodywith fast-speedform that is helping him stay in shape during the lockdown.
Corderio also agrees that Tyson is in his best shape and complimentshis punches: "He has the same power as a guy who is 21, 22-years old."
The trainer said he wasn'tsure what to "expect from a guy who hasnt hit mitts for I think almost ten years," Corderio told TalkSport. During the boxing session, Tyson clips together powerful punches so we can see his greatest moments. His trainer notes, "I held his right hook and thought he is going to kill somebody. Watch the video to see for yourself, we wouldn't want to get behind any of those, even in full body armor gear.
During an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2013, Tysoncredits his plant-based diet for saving his life. He shared, "Well, my life is different today because I have stability in my life. Im not on drugs. Im not out on the streets or in clubs and everything in my life that I do now is structured around the development of my life and my family. I lost weight. I dropped over 100lbs and I just felt like changing my life, doing something different and I became a vegan."
Becoming a vegan gave me another opportunity to live a healthy life. High blood pressure, almost dying, arthritis, and once I became a vegan all that stuff diminished.
Before getting too ahead of ourselves and predicting Tyson'sreturn to thering, hehopped on T.I's Instagramlive and hinted the idea.Ive been working out, Ive been trying to get in the ring, I think Im going to box some exhibitions and get in shape.
Tyson also said, I want to go to the gym and get in shape to be able to box three or four-round exhibitions for some charities and stuff." It's clear that othersshould be nervous about the idea of Tyson's return, like professional boxer Ryan Garciawho commented on one of Tyson's posts, saying, "I got scared when you said Im back ."

HomeFood & BeverageNew Chef-Led Startup Launches to Bring Frozen Vegan Dishes Around the UK with Free Delivery DTC Pep Kitchen
Plant-based, frozen, and shelf-stable are leading the way through the troubles caused to the foodservice sector during this global pandemic. Riding on this wave, vegan ready meal brand Pep Kitchen in the UK is set to launch with a range of seven frozen meals with free delivery DTC.
Pep Kitchen is a startup founded by chefs Joe Coulter and Ben MacAndrews. The duo met whilst working together in a French Restaurant in Covent Garden and also worked together running busy food trucks in Londons street food scene. Their menu is heavily influenced by their experiences.
The menu comprises Jerk Sweet Potato Curry, Mexican Chipotle Bean Stew, Spicy Szechuan Mapo Tofu, North African Harissa Hotpot, Gunpowder Roots & Dhal, Mung Bean Moussaka and Jackfruit Massaman. Meals need to be ordered in batches of six, cost 5.75 each, are one serving each and can be heated up in under ten minutes.
In keeping with the company ethos on sustainability, the deliveries are carbon neutral and all of the packaging is either compostable, recyclable or returnable for reuse.
The website for Pep Kitchen states that the company is pro freezing as this allows them to cook food and maintain its goodness without the use of artificial additives for preservation.
It goes on to say: We love our food and we werent satisfied with what was on offer in the market, especially for people who arent strictly vegan but want to cut down on their meat intake. So, we said; lets give this a go ourselves and make plant-based food people will genuinely enjoy!

Study Shows Meat Consumption in Germany is Declining – vegconomist – the vegan business magazine
Posted: at 8:45 pm
HomeMarket & TrendsStudy Shows Meat Consumption in Germany is Declining Tobias Arhelger-adobe.stock.com
A recent representative study by Forsa on the eating habits of Germans, commissioned by Federal Minister of Food Julia Klckner, shows that meat consumption in the country continues to decline and this decline is increasingly taking place amongst males. Only 26% of those surveyed eat meat every day, whereas this was the case for 34% surveyed in 2015.
One reason for this decline is that more and more men in particular are forgoing their daily portion of meat. Just under half of those surveyed (49%) have already bought vegetarian or vegan alternatives to animal products at least once.
Predictably, young people are more open-minded: 61% of 14 to 29-year-olds and 64% of 30 to 44-year-olds have already opted for these products once or more often when shopping. The reasons given were:
Julia Klckner commented: Consumers in Germany are eating an increasingly varied diet. They like to try out new things, and according to our survey, there is a colourful variety on their plates. What consumers do not need are government regulations for private shopping lists. A balanced diet does not include meat and sausage every day. The number of those who deliberately avoid them has increased. People used to talk about Sunday roasts and not without reason! A clear result of the eating habits in Germany is that more than half of them are flexitarians, not completely without and not only with meat, but both.
