We will meet up online to help heal ourselves and others. We will be working on practices of self healing, group healing, and meditation. Then a question and answer period following this workshop. We will start with an active meditation. Then move onto the first wave of energy: This is for helping release the past. Help separating it out so we can look at it more objectively to move on in our life.

The second wave: Is for balancing. Balancing the relationship between organs, balancing Chakras, the internal and external experiences and more.

The third wave: Is for easing the unknown. To discover our power to move forward and have peace with not knowing.

Sometimes cute, sometimes irritating it might be a familiar occurrence at this point: A dog barks in the background of a video conference.

In this case, though, it's definitely cute, because the dog is River, a fluffy Bernedoodle who's certified in canine therapy. And her owner is Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School's librarian.

"I'm going live, River. Please behave!" Diana Haneski yells lovingly to the pup one morning earlier this spring, the teacher quieting her special pet as she logs on to a Microsoft Teams meeting with her colleagues.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic closed schools, Haneski was leading morning meditation and mindfulness exercises in her media center. After, she felt the need to maintain that aspect of her routine for herself and her colleagues.

"Teachers are used to seeing each other every day in the hallway and during their lunch and during their planning," Haneski said. "And to not have that contact is difficult."

Tuesday marked the end of a school year like no other in Broward County. And while this March's abrupt shift online disrupted all educators' routines, for survivors of the nation's deadliest high school shooting, the pandemic was also a triggering reminder of those traumatic disruptions of more than two years ago.

Meditating together virtually has helped relieve some of that stress.

"Eight o'clock. You can always count on her being there," said Melody Herzfeld, the school's drama teacher whose work helping her students cope with the aftermath of the shooting earned her special recognition from the Tony Awards in 2018.

Herzfeld said she wasn't open to virtual meditation when Haneski first offered. She was overwhelmed with the challenges of translating her classes online.

"I was like, 'Oh, I don't want to do meditation. I just want to figure this out. I need to know how to get on Zoom. I need to know how to do my grades,'" Herzfeld said.

"And all I really needed was someone to say, 'Okay, let's just take a minute for ourselves and just center ourselves,'" she said.

"She's been that for us," she said, referring to Haneski.

Survivors of the massacre also find solace at Eagles' Haven Wellness Center, which opened last year in hopes of meeting the long-term mental health needs of the Parkland and Coral Springs communities.

"Right from the beginning when everything broke, we got working on putting things virtually," said Rebecca Jarquin, the center's program director.

Now that means a daylong schedule of virtual activities, including meditation, art therapy and exercise classes.

"Through the online format where you can come in virtually, we're still connected," Jarquin said.

3 Empowering Mantras & How To Use Them In Your Meditation Practice – mindbodygreen.com

I like to start my meditations by taking a few deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth before letting that breath flow effortlessly through the nose. If it feels comfortable, take a few moments to scan through the body to relax any areas where you sense tension or tightness. I like to pay special attention and relax the muscles in my face and my shoulders.

And then, start to silently repeat the mantra "So-Hum." Spoiler alert: Your attention will drift away. You'll find yourself all of a sudden thinking the most random thoughts, engaging with some sound you pick up on or maybe with a physical sensation you start to notice.

When you drift away from the mantra, simply notice without judgment where your attention has gone, and then gently return to the mantra. Imagine that you're out to dinner, and your mantra is your dinner partner, and the conversation that you're in. Of course you can hear words from other people's conversations, but you likely wouldn't get up from your table and sit down to join their conversation. This is all you're going to do in your meditation. When you notice that you've left the conversation with your mantra, notice it and then find your way back to silently repeating it.

That entire dance between the mantra and the other activity is your meditation. And know that it's in the drifting and coming back that you build that muscle of awareness to be able to notice where the attention of your mind has gone and to be able to bring it back to where you want to be.

You power is in the space between. The space between your breath, your thoughts, your moments. If you can cultivate present moment awareness, you harness the ability to direct your energy and attention to the things that will support you and not sabotage you. Mantras have been used to unlock that potential in us for thousands of years, so I'd be willing to bet on your success with it any day of the week.

Indian spiritual leader and founder of Art Of Living Foundation, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar appeared on India TV's Sarvadharm Sammelan and talked about the ways in which people can deal with the escalating coronavirus pandemic. He stressed the use of Indian traditional knowledge and Ayurveda to fight the deadly virus and urges to make it recognized in the country. He said that the next two months are very crucial and urged followers to maintain social distancing and pay heed to the rules and regulations laid out by the government. He compared the COVID-19 pandemic to that of World War and said that one needs to be equipped with good immunity and a relaxed mind to fight this battle.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said that yoga, pranayamas, and meditation are the way to fight the novel coronavirus. He stressed that yoga helps to keep unwanted diseases at bay and build a healthy body. By using jaggery and honey rather than white sugar is the first step to strengthen immunity. He said that white sugar decreased the power of the body to fight diseases. With the escalating coronavirus scare, one needs to take care of their food habits as well, in order to stay protected. He shared that consuming turmeric with black pepper, giloy, ashwagandha, tulsi (basil), neem and other ayurvedic medicines is very important at this time.

Ayurveda, according to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, should be brought to the limelight as it consists of the effective components that help fight many diseases. He said that the nationneeds to understand the power of Ayurveda and give it the same place as that of allopathy. He said that there are many ayurvedic doctors and in the country and they should be given a fair chance to treat the COVID-19 patients.

Due to coronavirus, people have been restricted to their homes for the last two months. For them, Sri Sri Ravishankar suggested that everyone should use their time creatively and increase their knowledge of their own country during this time. He shared that there are uncountable dishes made in different regions of the country. Also, people speak different dialects at different places in India. So, people should get aware of their own country and learn about every caste and religion.

I never thought Id spend $70 on a meditation app but here we are – KnowTechie

If you had told me a week ago that I would not only spend money on a sleep and meditation app, but that I would spend SEVENTY dollars on one, I would have laughed. Like, a lot. But here we are a week later and $70 shorter.

Ive been in the market for a calming app for months now, ever since Ste dropped this little piece on us, as part of my efforts to improve my digital and personal wellbeing. Ive already knocked off a bunch of subscriptions (step one), with step two aimed at improving my sleepless nights and anxiety.

While doing my own research, I kept seeing suggestions for Calm. And because the internet knows all, I then started getting ads for it. I ignored them for a while, but then one ad had Eva Green reading a bedtime story. Ive been obsessed with her voice ever since rewatching Penny Dreadful and this was the tipping point for me.

Its hard to explain the disappointment I felt when I realized that most of the Sleep Stories from celebrities like Eva Green, Matthew McConaughey, Nick Offerman, and more are not only behind a paywall, but a $70 a year paywall at that. Begrudgingly, I signed up for the trial and set a reminder to cancel it before the seven-day trial ran out.

Ive never been good at falling asleep and white noise and other calming sounds have never done it for me, but MY GOD, these stories have both help calm me and improve my actual sleep. Im also not a fan of ASMR, but after listening to people read me stories in the most calming voices ever, maybe I need to give it a second chance.

There are plenty of other things in the app from what I can tell, including Disney piano tracks, daily meditation lessons, and more. Im excited to try these out in the future, but right now Ive only been using it at night for sleep purposes.

Now, do I recommend that everyone go out and drop big money on this app? Absolutely not, but with a seven-day trial, its absolutely worth trying it for yourself. If you are interested in trying it out for yourself, Calm is available on both Android and iOS.

If you find yourself having persistent negative thoughts, chances are that you may develop dementia in the future. According to a new study, people showing pessimistic thinking patterns may have a higher risk of Alzheimer's disease -- a condition that affects memory and other mental functions. In this study, repetitive negative thoughts were linked with two Alzheimer's features: a decline in mental abilities and an increase in harmful brain proteins that causes the degenerative disease. More than five million Americans are living with the condition. By 2050, this number is projected to reach nearly 14 million, according to the Alzheimer's Association, a non-profit organization.

"We expect that chronic negative thinking patterns over a long period of time could increase the risk of dementia. We do not think the evidence suggests that short-term setbacks would increase one's risk of dementia," lead author Dr Natalie Marchant from University College London Psychiatry, said. "We hope that our findings could be used to develop strategies to lower people's risk of dementia by helping them to reduce their negative thinking patterns," she added. Earlier studies have suggested that depression is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. In this study, scientists set out to understand the connection between mental health disorders and dementia. The team studied 350 people over the age of 55 to understand if thinking patterns associated with depression and anxiety could put people at higher risk for dementia.

The volunteers responded to questions about negative experiences. They asked whether they mulled over the past and worried about the future. Along with measuring signs of depression and anxiety, the researchers also tested mental functions such as memory, attention, spatial cognition, and language. Additionally, they also looked at scans to check for harmful brain proteins linked to Alzheimer's disease: amyloid and tau deposits.

Brain scans showed that pessimistic people are more likely to have the two dangerous proteins deposits in the brain. These people also experienced more declines in memory -- among the earlier signs of Alzheimer's disease. Further analysis showed that people suffering from depression and anxiety were more likely to experience the impairment, thereby supporting previous studies on the topic.

"We propose that repetitive negative thinking maybe a new risk factor for dementia as it could uniquely contribute to dementia", Dr Marchant said. The study underlines the need for mental health care. Fiona Carragher from Alzheimer's Society, said: "Understanding the factors that can increase the risk of dementia is vital in helping us improve our knowledge of this devastating condition and, where possible, developing prevention strategies." She added that the link between repeated negative thinking patterns and both cognitive decline and harmful deposits was interesting. "Mental health could be a vital cog in the prevention and treatment of dementia; more research will tell us to what extent," she noted.

Next, the researchers will explore solutions to repeating negative thinking. According to the study co-author, Dr Gael Chtelat from the Universit de Caen-Normandie, mental training practices such as meditation might help promote positive thinking. The researchers will now study if mindfulness training or targeted talk therapy, could reduce pessimistic thoughts, and thereby reduce the risk of dementia.

The study is published in Alzheimer's & Dementia.
