Black Lives Matter: motivations for protest were never questioned, says Wilms – The Brussels Times

Posted: June 10, 2020 at 2:51 pm

The cause of the Black Lives Matter protest organised in Brussels on Sunday was never questioned, only its execution, according to Belgian Prime Minister Sophie Wilms and mayor of the City of Brussels Philippe Close.

On Tuesday, Wilms met with Close following the gathering of about 10,000 people at the Place Poelert in Brussels, in a static protest against racism and police violence sparked by the death of George Floyd in the United States.

Even though the causes defended by the organisers namely the fight against racism and all forms of violence have never been called into question, the execution of the event in its form and in its unfolding contravenes the directives determined by the National Security Council extended to the Minister-Presidents and in consultation with the experts of the GEES, Wilms and Close said in a joint statement.

During the meeting, it was recalled that Belgium remains in a health crisis situation. Safeguarding the health of the citizens must above all remain the priority, they added.

The meeting, at which Minister of the Interior Pieter De Crem and the Chief of the Brussels-Capital-Ixelles police zone, Michel Goovaerts, were also present, also drew attention to the efforts made by the population to follow the measures, making it possible to improve the situation and lift the lockdown.

These efforts must continue. Everyones health is at stake, Wilms and Close said.

Sabah minister expects to be charged tomorrow over RM155m Risda land deal, says case politically motivated – Malay Mail

Posted: at 2:51 pm

Peter Anthony was interrogated by the MACC yesterday for seven hours, from 10.30am in connection to the issuance of a RM1.5 billion direct contract to three road maintenance companies. Bernama pic

KOTA KINABALU, June 10 Sabah Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Peter Anthony has received a warrant from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to present himself in the Sessions Court here tomorrow to face money laundering charges.

The Parti Warisan Sabah vice-president said he understands the case is linked to a Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda) land deal in Tongod from 2014 and that the charges are to be framed under the Anti-Money Laundering, AntiTerrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLA), but maintained his innocence.

Its not a problem. I will attend court and face the charges, I will prove my innocence as I believe this is a politically motivated case, he told reporters at the Sabah MACC office here after being summoned today.

Anthony said he had previously clarified his role in the Risda case.

Anthony was interrogated by the MACC yesterday for seven hours, from 10.30am in connection to the issuance of a RM1.5 billion direct contract to three road maintenance companies.

In 2017, he was arrested and quizzed for his involvement in the RM155 million Risda deal when he was still a businessman.

A lawyer, Michael Ubu who was connected to the case, went missing from Sabah following investigations into the Risda case, but is believed to have returned to the state recently.

Anthony is seen as the right hand man to Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal. Their Warisan party is friendly to the federal Pakatan Harapan bloc and fellow Sabah party Upko.

Anthony called the interrogation and expected charges a clear case of political intimidation and vowed to fight back.

They can do whatever they want but I will fight back. As a Sabahan and as Kadazandusun, I will not cower, and will not be taken for a fool, he said.

‘This was racially motivated,’ says grandmother of Tofino woman shot and killed by N.B. police – CTV News

Posted: at 2:51 pm

VICTORIA -- A young woman who was shot and killed by police in New Brunswick on Thursday has been identified by family members as 26-year-old Chantel Moore of the Tlaoquiaht First Nation near Tofino, B.C.

Police in Edmundston, N.B., say they were asked to perform a wellness check on a woman at an apartment building around 2:30 a.m. Thursday.

The department said in a statement that the responding officer was confronted by a woman, who was allegedly holding a knife and making threats.

The officer shot the woman. Despite resuscitation efforts, she died at the scene, according to police.

Chantel Moores grandmother, Nora Martin, said the family is in mourning and disbelief over what happened.

Chantel was very friendly, she was very outgoing, said Martin. She was well-loved by the family and had numerous friends.

She said as soon as she heard news of Moores death, she felt that race was a factor.

When I first heard about it, that was my first thought: 'This was racially motivated,' said Martin.

Weve been dealing with police brutality for a number of years, she added. I know in my own family its been going on for a long time.

Martin said Moore moved to New Brunswick roughly two months ago to be closer to her five-year-old daughter who was living with a relative in Edmundston.

According to family members, Moores boyfriend first contacted police in Edmundston to check on Moore because she claimed she was being harassed.

She just moved into her own place two days ago and I guess somebody in the neighbourhood or in the town had been following her or hanging around her place, said Martin.

Martin said the police then visited Moores mother, who referred police to Moores new apartment.

That was the last time that Moores mother heard from police before they called to tell her that her daughter had died.

According to Martin, police told family members that Moore had been shot five times after threatening a lone police officer with a knife.

My granddaughter, Chantel, is small, shes slim, shes small in stature and she couldnt do that, said Martin. I dont think she would do that and we dont believe that she would attack anybody.

Martin also questioned why police fired five shots, and why a Taser or other non-lethal method of subduing someone was not used. She said that she hopes police will change how they approach confrontations to focus more on deescalating situations.

Like I said, she was small in stature, its very appalling to us.

Police say that an autopsy has been scheduled.

Investigators have not released any additional information about the incident, including what sort of threats the woman allegedly made.

The Edmundston Police Force has requested the services of an independent agency to conduct a review of the incident to ensure police actions were appropriate and conform to policing standards, said police in a statement.

As a matter of accountability and transparency for the independent review, the New Brunswick RCMP is providing investigative and forensic support.

Martin said that a fundraiser has now been launched to help Moores family in B.C. travel to New Brunswick for a funeral.

Normally in our tradition and our culture we would bring her back to our homeland here in Tlaoquiaht, but we wont be able to do that (due to COVID-19), she said.

There are a number of people fundraising to help us get to New Brunswick by tomorrow. Well probably be there for a few days, she said.

June 28 marks the 51st anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, when members of the LGBTQ community fought back when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York's Greenwich Village. Each June, Pride Month is celebrated to commemorate the watershed moment that kicked off the modern LGBTQ rights movement. These memorable quotes from LGBTQ leaderson everything from intersectionality to being an allywill ring true all year round.

"There will not be a magic day when we wake up and it's now OK to express ourselves publicly. We make that day by doing things publicly until its simply the way things are."

From her "Never Doubt" speech at the Millennium March for Equality, 2000

"We will not go away with our issues of sexuality. We are coming home. It is not enough to tell us that one was a brilliant poet, scientist, educator, or rebel. Whom did he love? It makes a difference. I can't become a whole man simply on what is fed to me: watered-down versions of Black life in America. I need the ass-splitting truth to be told, so I will have something pure to emulate, a reason to remain loyal."

From Ceremonies: Prose and Poetry, 1992

"Part of what my discomfort was, in the beginning, is that I wanted something that didn't exist. I wanted something that was so singular, a label that was so singular for me. I was so specialI was so different from everybody else I was meeting. And I wanted a different label. And I had to say, 'Charles, snap out of that. What are you talking about?' All identity labels are umbrella terms to some degree, but this term bisexual is not only serviceable but it is sufficient. And yes, it brings together a bunch of people who are maybe shades different from one another. And maybe thats the beauty of labels: that they force you to be with other people and see the difference."

From an interview with Michelangelo Signorile about coming out as bisexual in his memoir Fire Shut Up In My Bones, 2014

"Like racism and all forms of prejudice, bigotry against transgender people is a deadly carcinogen. We are pitted against each other in order to keep us from seeing each other as allies. Genuine bonds of solidarity can be forged between people who respect each other's differences and are willing to fight their enemy together. We are the class that does the work of the world, and can revolutionize it. We can win true liberation."

From Transgender Liberation: A Movement Whose Time Has Come, 1992

"Openness may not completely disarm prejudice, but it's a good place to start."

From the essay "The Gay Athlete," published in Sports Illustrated, 2013

"If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door."

From a tape recording to be played in the event of his assassination, quoted in Randy Shilts's The Mayor of Castro Street: The Life and Times of Harvey Milk, 1977

"In light of Jamey's death, it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality. Our society needs to recognize the unstoppable momentum toward unequivocal civil equality for every gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender citizen of this country.

From a blog post in response to the death by suicide of Jamey Rodemeyer, a bisexual teen and YouTuber, 2011

"Sometimes we drug ourselves with dreams of new ideas. The head will save us. The brain alone will set us free. But there are no new ideas waiting in the wings to save us as women, as human. There are only old and forgotten ones, new combinations, extrapolations and recognitions from within ourselvesalong with the renewed courage to try them out."

From Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches, 1984

"Please remember, especially in these times of group-think and the right-on chorus, that no person is your friend (or kin) who demands your silence, or denies your right to grow and be perceived as fully blossomed as you were intended."

From In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens: Womanist Prose, 1983

"I'd like to see the gay revolution get started, but there hasn't been any demonstration or anything recently. You know how the straight people are. When they don't see any action they think, 'Well, gays are all forgotten now, they're worn out, they're tired.' ... If a transvestite doesn't say I'm gay and I'm proud and I'm a transvestite, then nobody else is going to hop up there and say I'm gay and I'm proud and I'm a transvestite for them."

From an interview in Out of the Closets: Voices of Gay Liberation, 1972

"Our strategy is how we copehow we measure and weigh what is to be said and when, what is to be done and how, and to whom, daily deciding/risking who it is we can call an ally, call a friend (whatever that person's skin, sex, or sexuality). We are women without a line. We are women who contradict each other."

From This Bridge Called My Back, Fourth Edition: Writings by Radical Women of Color, 1981

Everybody's journey is individual. You don't know with whom you're going to fall in love. If you fall in love with a boy, you fall in love with a boy. The fact that many Americans consider it a disease says more about them than it does about homosexuality."

From an interview with Eve Auchincloss and Nancy Lynch, 1969

"I don't want you to love me. I don't want you to like me. But I don't want you to beat me up and kill me. You don't have to like me, I don't care. But please don't kill me."

From a CNN interview with Anderson Cooper, 2013

"Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."

From his memoir Straight from the Heart, 1995

"We should indeed keep calm in the face of difference, and live our lives in a state of inclusion and wonder at the diversity of humanity."

From Lions and Tigers and Bears: The Internet Strikes Back, 2013
