How to build up your personal brand

Posted: at 5:27 pm

Sure, everyone knows what a brand is. Coke, Pepsi, McDonald’s. But that buzzword is getting thrown around a whole lot in career and job search conversations these days, too. And you might be thinking to yourself, “Why do I really have to care about this?”

Here’s why: Whether you’re on the job hunt, a student, or gainfully employed, you must think, act, and plan like a business leader. With the surge of social media, you have not only the ability, but you now have the need to manage your own reputation, both online and in real life.

More from Forbes.com

Employers will Google you before they even invite you to an interview. (Your current employer probably has an eye on what you’re doing, too.) And when you interact with people, both online and offline, they’ll build up an image of who you are over time.

And here’s where you come in: You want to be in control of all of those impressions. Why leave your professional reputation to chance, when you can be your own PR guru and manage your image?

Your personal brand is all about who you are and what you want to be known for. And while that’s a pretty broad concept, I’m going to break down the process for building your brand into a few easy steps.

Your first task is to develop your “brand mantra.” Basically, this is the “heart and soul” of your brand, according to branding expert Kevin Keller. It’s the foundation of all of your branding efforts.

It’s not a mission statement – rather, it’s a quick, simple, and memorable statement describing who you are and what you have to offer. Ivanka Trump is “an American wife, mother, and entrepreneur.” FedEx is “peace of mind.” Disney is “fun family entertainment.”

And yes, those are all famous options, but the same basic principles apply for your own brand. Ready for your turn? Here are four simple steps to creating your mantra:

Determine your emotional appeal

For starters, think broadly about your personality and how it affects the experience someone will have with you. Are you insanely organized? Do people love working with you for your killer sense of humour?

Make a list of words that best describe these features of your personality. These words are known as emotional modifiers. Hint: They can be as simple as Disney’s “fun.”

Determine your description

Your next step is coming up with a descriptive modifier that brings clarity to the emotional modifier, identifying what or who your brand is for. In Disney’s case, it’s “family.” In Nike’s mantra, “authentic athletic performance,” “authentic” is the emotional appeal, while “athletic” tells you what the brand is for. As an individual, yours might be an industry (“health care” or “education”), or it might be a tangible skill (“creative” or “strategic”).

Determine your function

Lastly, write down what, exactly, you do (or will do). It might be something that directly relates to your career: writing, graphic design, or financial planning, for example. Or, it might be something more broad, like Disney’s “entertainment.” Are you a manager, a creator, an organizer? A connector of people?

Put it all together

Finally, look at your three lists of words, and see how you can combine them into a short sentence or phrase – no more than five words. Your brand mantra should communicate clearly who you are, it should be simple and memorable, and it should feel inspiring to you. You might be a “dependable, strategic planner” or “a creative professional connector.” Or, your mantra might be something like, “motivating others to do their best.”

Now – what do you do with this statement? Check back soon for tips on how to use your mantra and build your online brand, as well as how to live your brand, every day.

Zeo and Athletes' Performance Team Up to Bring the Restorative Power of Sleep to Elite and Professional Athletes

Posted: at 5:27 pm

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire -02/16/12)- Zeo, the leading sleep management company, and Athletes' Performance, the world-renowned leader in integrated performance training, nutrition and physical therapy, today announced a partnership that incorporates Zeo's technology into the Athletes' Performance training program. Athletes' Performance works closely with elite and professional athletes as well as military personnel and is proud to be supporting a record 74 athletes who have been invited to the NFL Combine, taking place in Indianapolis from February 22 to 28.

A grossly underutilized tool for performance, sleep is critical to physical recovery and mental coordination and can provide a significant competitive edge for athletes. As evidenced in Zeo's recent Sleep Like an All Star publication, research conducted by sleep and sports expert Cheri Mah of Stanford University has demonstrated that more sleep helped collegiate football players take 0.15 seconds off their 40-yard dash, basketball players increase their free throw shooting by 11 percent, and swimmers improve their reaction time off the starting block by 17 percent.

Athletes' Performance plans to introduce Zeo products, including Zeo Sleep Manager Mobile and Zeo Sleep Manager Bedside, to their users and extensive network of trainers. Their Core Performance program, used by leading corporations such as Intel, will also be incorporated. Core Performance is focused on bringing the proven fundamentals of mindset, nutrition, movement, and recovery developed at Athletes' Performance to consumers, and sleep is a critical component of better health for non-athletes and athletes alike.

"We're excited to team up with Athletes' Performance to further our goal of making sleep a top priority for athletes as well as the general public," said Dave Dickinson, CEO of Zeo. "This partnership speaks volumes to the importance of sleep to overall health, fitness and performance. By measuring and tracking their sleep with Zeo, Athletes' Performance clients will see a positive impact on their sleep quality and physical recovery and, as a result, their performance on the field and in the game of life."

"We're big fans of Zeo Sleep Manager and are thrilled to introduce the technology to our client base, including leading athletes, teams and executives," said Mark Verstegen of Athletes' Performance. "Sleep is as important to overall health and wellness as diet and exercise, and incorporating Zeo into our programs will add another positive level to our existing methodology."

Athletes' Performance operates four training facilities nationwide and has supported top athletes across a variety of sports, including 14 number-one NFL draft picks in 2011 and dozens of MLB All-Stars and MVPs.

MMRGlobal Announces Meaningful Use Certified Solution to Deploy Personal Health Records From Any EMR

Posted: at 5:27 pm

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire -02/16/12)- MMRGlobal, Inc. (OTC.BB: MMRF.OB - News) ("MMR"), a leading provider of Personal Health Records (PHRs) and electronic document management and imaging systems for healthcare professionals, today announced it is offering new software that will allow hospitals and other clinical facilities to use a Meaningful Use certified solution to instantly make health information available to patients securely over the Internet using the MMRPatientView portal from any EMR system without first having to scan, fax or print any documents. The system was created with MMR by Interbit Data. Interbit Data will demonstrate the capability to use its NetDelivery application to integrate HCIS offerings with the MMR suite for MEDITECH EMR clients at the HIMSS 2012 convention in Las Vegas taking place February 20-24. The Interbit Data-MMR module is already being installed in hospitals and is certified for Meaningful Use with MEDITECH systems. MEDITECH is being used by more than 650 hospitals nationwide. Although the solution is only deployed for MEDITECH at this time, MMR believes that it can work with virtually any EMR platform, which opens up a significant new market opportunity for MMRGlobal.

This joint solution utilizes Interbit Data's NetDelivery with Document Manager application to assemble patient reports from a hospital's healthcare information system (HCIS), and then delivers them securely to MMRPatientView. The one-of-a-kind solution also presents a potential revenue opportunity for hospitals and other healthcare facilities when patients upgrade from MMRPatientView to the full-featured MyMedicalRecords PHR service, which enables patients to maintain copies of their medical records from all their providers in one secure central location and safely access them anytime from anywhere over the Internet. The patient can also designate third parties, such as a caregiver, to have access to their records. In addition, each MyMedicalRecords PHR account can cover up to nine additional family members at no additional cost to the subscriber.

According to Arthur Young, President of Interbit Data, "Through its relationship with Interbit Data, MMR gives providers the ability to seamlessly deploy a patented MyMedicalRecords Personal Health Record from (virtually) any Electronic Medical Record system using a software module and without any additional hardware. So for example, patient discharge records can be shared with the patient without having to physically print, fax or scan them first."

The solution comes with the MMR Stimulus Program, which enables hospitals using the selected EMR systems to integrate the MMRPatientView patient portal as a standalone module and still participate in the MMR Stimulus Program, which can generate hundreds of thousands of dollars each year as patients upgrade to a full-featured MyMedicalRecords PHR.

About MMRGlobal, Inc.

MMRGlobal, Inc., through its wholly-owned operating subsidiary, MyMedicalRecords, Inc. ("MMR"), provides secure and easy-to-use online Personal Health Records ("PHRs") and electronic safe deposit box storage solutions, serving consumers, healthcare professionals, employers, insurance companies, financial institutions, and professional organizations and affinity groups. The MyMedicalRecords PHR enables individuals and families to access their medical records and other important documents, such as birth certificates, passports, insurance policies and wills, anytime from anywhere using the Internet. MyMedicalRecords is built on proprietary, patented technologies to allow documents, images and voicemail messages to be transmitted and stored in the system using a variety of methods, including fax, phone, or file upload without relying on any specific electronic medical record platform to populate a user's account. The Company's professional offering, MMRPro, is designed to give physicians' offices an easy and cost-effective solution to digitizing paper-based medical records and sharing them with patients in real time through an integrated patient portal. MMR is an Independent Software Vendor Partner with Kodak to deliver an integrated turnkey EMR solution for healthcare professionals. Through its merger with Favrille, Inc. in January 2009, the Company acquired intellectual property biotech assets that include anti-CD20 antibodies and data and samples from its FavId®/Specifid™ vaccine clinical trials for the treatment of B-Cell Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Wellness assessment directs path to get-fit success

Posted: at 5:26 pm

Are you feeling stuck in a workout rut? Or not seeing the pounds shed as fast as you would like? A full fitness and wellness assessment may be your answer for pinpointing ways to reach your goals. If you have plans for self improvement, it is helpful to know what you are starting with.

A series of tests, lifestyle questions, measurements and movements are part of an advanced technique to help individuals get in shape the healthy way. Foxnews.com literally ran the gamut to show how to achieve optimal fitness safely, intelligently and effectively with comprehensive knowledge of how the body functions.

NYC’s Equinox’s Tier 4 personal training program is a preventive care program that first analyzes your current state of being compared to goals you would like to achieve, and from there creates a manageable plan for self improvement.

Metabolic Rate

First step, a metabolic testing assessment.  “The resting metabolic rate is going to give us an indication of how many calories your body uses at rest for all the functions in your body, to work right,” Rick Garrigan, T4 Coach and EFTI Master Instructor told Foxnews.com.

Garrigan points out that you want your metabolic rate as high as possible while in a fasting state. This indicates a fast metabolism.  Some things that will slow your metabolism down are “skipping meals, going too long, causing your blood glucose to fluctuate.” Garrigan said.

Other numbers crunched included blood pressure and resting heart rate.

Personal Profile Questions

The next step in creating a personal profile involved a series of questions about my family’s health history, stress levels, any orthopedic injuries, exercise history, daily nutrition, lifestyle and fitness goals.

Questions included:

“How many cups of coffee do you drink a day?”
“Does your family have a history of cancer?”
“Have you had an reoccurring injuries?”
“Are you currently taking any medications?”
“Any late night snacks?”

These questions are important because “this gives me an in depth look at where you are now, any possible medical conditions that could come up in the future as we approach you from a preventative care standpoint” Garrigan said.

Garrigan points out that as a personal trainer they aim to develop an open relationship to help with the entire management process of your health,  “keeping open lines of communication with your doctors as well.”

Body Composition

Next up, it was time to get measured and pinched. Body composition refers to the proportions of body weight in terms of lean body mass and body fat. Garrigan says it is essential to have some body fat, but excess levels pose serious risks.

Height, weight, and head to toe measurements were taken, “to give us a baseline to see where you are before you start the program  and say if you put on any muscle, how the body changes.”

Functional Movements

A functional movement screen includes 7 full body motions like a deep squat, in-line lunge, and a hurdle step. Observing how these moves are performed can help indicate any injuries, and “gives an idea of any asymmetries, any differences in your body.”

Cardiovascular Fitness Test

The same breathing mask used to gather resting metabolic rates went back on for the cardiovascular test.  A  heart rate monitor was also put on and it was time to run.

The aerobic fitness test gages the ability of the heart, lungs, and circulatory system to supply oxygen and nutrients to working muscles effectively. Garrigan points out that this is generally considered to be the most important fitness component.

The results award your Maximum oxygen consumption (Max VO2) level—which is a measurement of the maximum rate your body can consume and process oxygen during exercise. The higher, the better your cardio fitness.

The results of a comprehensive wellness exam indicate any potential health risk factors, yields a non-scientific “body age,” and creates a personalized plan with tips for meeting your goals. Often, these assessments are continued at various times throughout training to make sure you are on track to meet your objectives.

The end goal of this preventative care program is “to establish healthier patterns to give you a better quality of life,” Garrigan said.

Veon misused non-profit funded by tax dollars, prosecutor says

Posted: at 5:25 pm

HARRISBURG — Former Rep. Mike Veon used state grant money intended for economic development to further his own personal and political agenda, a state prosecutor told a jury today.

Veon, a longtime Democratic power broker formerly of Beaver Falls, is charged with theft-related offenses and conflict of interest for allegedly misusing funds from a non-profit he created and supplied with $10 million in state grant money. Opening arguments began today in Dauphin County Court.

In 2010, a jury convicted Veon of 14 charges for awarding under-the-table salary to legislative staffers who worked on campaigns. He is serving a 6- to 14-year prison term.

In this case, Veon, 55, "used the authority of his office to directly benefit his family," Deputy Attorney General Laurel Brandstetter said. He did so by arranging a $100,000-plus job with a development contractor that was paid $900,000 by the Beaver Initiative for Growth and had substantial contracts with House Democrats, Brandstetter said.

That is one of several instances of misuse, she said.

Veon made about $95,000 as a legislative leader and from BIG "he made zero," said Dan Raynak, Veon's lawyer.

The initial charge against Veon alleged he tried to get a higher salary for his brother, Mark, not a job, Raynak said.

The alleged go-between for Veon, his former chief of staff Jeffrey Foreman, is a "multi-convicted felon," Raynak said.

Raynak said the jury would hear from Veon's brother and the head of the development company and it would be their word against Foreman's.

Another charge against Veon is that BIG, which Veon founded, paid $19,000 in rent for an additional office on Pittsburgh's South Side above a cigar store. BIG never staffed the office, Brandstetter said. A legislative intern was housed there temporarily.

Raynak said BIG had an incredible number of projects in Allegheny County.

A former state legislator, Rep. Terry Van Horne, received a $5,000 check from BIG but never did any work for the non-profit, prosecutors say. Van Horne died recently.

BIG funds were also used for an additional legislative office in Midland.

Raynak said it was all taxpayer money and Veon could have, as a legislative leader, obtained whatever he needed in state money for the Midland office.

"If Mr. Veon wanted 30 district offices he literally could have gotten the money," Raynak said.

"Are the taxpayers actually losing a penny?" Raynak asked.

Michael Palermo, attorney for Veon's co-defendant Annamarie Perretta-Rosepink, said the government would have to prove she had criminal intent as a person who wrote BIG checks and also headed Veon's district office in Beaver Falls. Rosepink, he said, had no criminal intent.
