Innovative fashion shoot puts model face-down on a scanner

Photos from a fashion shoot done with a scanner instead of a traditional camera.

Photographer Henry Hargreaves created a unique look for a recent fashion shoot by choosing not to use a camera at all. Instead, he had the model and jewelry pressed up against a common flat-bed scanner. The result is a faded, ghostly look a bit like putting your face on the copier, but done with artistic flair.
Hargreaves explained that when he was approached to capture images of a jewelry collection, he wanted to try something more interesting. His primary motivator was, ironically, that shooting fashion photos isn't really his line of work: "To be a successful fashion photographer, you have to care about fashion." He wanted to make more of an art project out of it, and thought the scanner idea fit the subject well.

The model was required to sit still for up to half a minute for shots like this one.
The scanner itself is just a standard large-format one "the cheapest of the biggest" and didn't have any special modifications other than taking the lid off and putting it on a stand. Even the images it put out didn't get much in the way of tweaking. The trouble was that, without any image preview or review, he had to experiment with different factors like how to arrange the items and the model, as well as how to keep things steady for the 30 seconds it would take to capture the image.
Hargreaves was also concerned about how much pressure should be put on the glass. Not just because it might break, but because so little of the image is in focus above the scanner surface that a tiny change in pressure might make the model's eyes or skin look totally different. In the end, it was simple trial and error.
It's not the first time a scanner or copier has been used for this type of image, though the look Hargreaves created is certainly different. Tori Amos has some album art done in a similar way, and Belgian artist Lieve Prins actually did copier-based art live on stage. And of course there are the innumerable minor pieces created by bored, mischievous office workers worldwide.

Even more impressive than her nonchalance about the move is that Caparroso is blind.
Caparroso, 51, has traveled around the world, competed in the Paralympics and is raising twins as a single mom.
Not once has her lack of vision prevented her from seeing her dreams become reality.
"Various people along the way made a difference in my life," she said.
She's lived in the Seattle area since 1995 and currently lives in Edmonds with her 5-year-old daughters, Daniella and Isabella, her nanny, and her 10-year-old guide dog, Gemma.
"I'm self-sufficient and independent, but I can't do it alone," she said. "I depend on my network of support."
Weekdays she leaves her home by 5:20 a.m. to catch a bus to her job at the Environmental Protection Agency in Seattle. The job has allowed her to follow her dreams of supporting a family and being a homeowner.
Caparroso was born in Mexico City with infant glaucoma. By the time she turned 7, Caparroso completely lost the little vision she was born with.
Her family dealt with Caparroso's blindness by ignoring it.

An alternative yoga star visits Prague

Duncan Wong, a world-famous yoga celebrity, comes to Prague with his workshop "Love Warrior Flow" June 16 at New Town Hall.
Wong is the creator of the Yogic Arts system, a synthesis of traditional yoga, martial arts and Thai massage therapy with elements of Pilates and modern dance. He believes these practices complement each other and are interconnected, and therefore should be practiced as such.
Both yogis and martial artists meditate in the same position and use the same breathing techniques, Wong says. Referring to yoga as a "solo act," which prepares the body and soul for a further step of interaction with people in dance or martial arts, Wong believes yoga practitioners should go "beyond the mat."
"I would say that eventually going beyond the mat and into a space of both dynamic and sensual contact with other people is a point of maturity and fulfillment," he says.

Wong does not exactly look or behave like a traditional yoga guru. Uniting his experiences of street fighting and kickboxing while growing up in San Francisco with a serious study of formal dojang, a style of Korean martial arts, as well as yoga, he represents a bridge between the practices of the East and the West.
Born to parents of Chinese and Scottish descent, Wong combined his multicultural legacy by sustaining his studios and reputation in the diverse environments of New York City, Shanghai and Kyoto. After he had acquired celebrity status as a teacher in New York City, where he ran two successful studios and had celebrity clients including Madonna, Sting and Bjrk, Wong got fed-up with the life of luxury and moved to Shanghai in search of a simpler and more meaningful life.
Covered in tattoos, a legacy of his teenage years in San Francisco, Wong gained popularity in China and Japan as an unconventional yoga teacher. His practice involves direct connection, and the intimacy of his classes, which include massage, is not easily accepted in the Asian world of traditional values.
But Wong is not discouraged by such cultural differences. He compares the mentality in the States, Europe and Asia by saying they are "three completely different animals with very similar spirits."
"Attention, depth and openness, in that order," he adds.

NBA finals notebook: Coaching comparison

"There are different approaches to being successful. We can all learn from everybody," Fisher replied. "Phil is regarded as one of the greatest coaches in sports history. Scotty is still early in his head-coaching career and possibly could be on his way to being considered one of the best coaches. His approach is different, but I've learned a lot since I've been here in how to manage people and manage players.
" ... (Brooks) has an unbelievable ability to have a sense of where (Thunder players) are. Maybe the advantage for him is that when these players were drafted, he was right there from day one. He's been with these guys for four years."
Fisher's responsibility: During the NBA lockout, players like Kevin Durant and LeBron James killed time by playing flag football and in charity basketball events. The 37-year-old Fisher didn't have time for flag football. As president of the NBA Players Association, he was involved for months in the negotiation of a new labor agreement.
"For obvious reasons, we all had a vested interest in trying to find a way to get basketball back onto the floor and out of the conference room," Fisher said. "I think we all should be proud of our efforts, but most appreciative of the (fans) - sticking with our game and coming back once we did resume play. ... You can't get this anywhere else. You can't find LeBron on another channel. There's not a Kevin Durant on other programming. That's what makes this really special."
Wade credited: Miami's Dwyane Wade was asked repeatedly Wednesday about where his body is at health-wise, and if his age - 30 - is beginning to show.
"I still have something in me, I have some left in me," Wade said. "I wish it was possible to stay at the same athleticism as I was at 24, but that's not possible."
Wade was 7-of-19 from the field Tuesday, scoring 19 points and dishing out eight assists. But on a night when the game's other stars - LeBron James, Durant and Russell Westbrook - were all playing at a higher level, his performance drew criticism.
Thunder players said they viewed no differences in Wade's game. Instead, they credited their defense for forcing him into a subpar effort.
"Everybody's defense is geared to not allow them to be superheroes, so to speak," Fisher said. "I think he is just as capable and always will be of putting up big numbers."
Durant reflects on Rucker game: On Wednesday, Durant was asked what he remembered about the night in August when he put on a streetball show at Rucker Park in New York, scoring 66 points and dazzling onlookers.

Oilers should consider AHL’s Jon Cooper for coaching job
Posted: at 7:17 pm
Jon Cooper used to stand before the bench as a lawyer, now he stands behind one.
And if he used to defend people, nobody has to defend his record as a hockey coach.
Everywhere he coaches, he wins. Midget AAA in Michigan, junior in two different leagues, in the pros with the Norfolk Admirals in the American Hockey League. Hes a rising star.
Would the Edmonton Oilers ever hire Cooper? Who knows?
He grew up in Prince George, went to school in the U.S. on a lacrosse scholarship, worked on Wall Street, then got his law degree and opened his own practice, before hockey took over his life and he decided to do it full-time about nine years ago.
At the least, the Oilers should be interviewing the young bright coach.
The Oilers are keeping their coach search ultra secret, although one of the leading candidates, Brent Sutter, has not had an interview with Oilers since working the bench for Canada at the world championship in May. Oilers team president Kevin Lowe was Canadas general manager.
Oilers associate coach Ralph Krueger, who could very well be the front-runner because he knows the team and the players, is still waiting for a decision, too.
As for Cooper, his team just won the AHL championship in Norfolk, Va., 28 wins in a row in league play from Super Bowl Sunday on, and they finished it off with 10 straight wins in the playoffs, winning 43 of their last 46 games. He hasnt been told that another team wants to talk to him, but, while he loves working for the Tampa Bar Lightning and is grateful for the opportunity to coach their farm club, surely an NHL feeler will come. If not the Oilers, then the Washington Capitals, also looking for a head coach.
My name is hot right now because of what weve done and how we did it, but I havent formally been contacted by anybody, Cooper said.
