The 5 Myths of Positive Mental Attitude

Posted: at 6:45 pm

Photo by Children At Risk Foundation A positive mental attitude is the starting point of all riches, whether they be riches of a material nature or intangible riches. ~Napoleon Hill

Okay, so theres no myth that I am a positive person, or at least striving to be one. However, I am aware that Im not positive all the time. I am continuously working to become conscientious of my choices, thoughts and reactions. I frequently get asked about positive thinking, and I wanted to first clear up some points of confusion.

Positive people are not living like Pollyanna in some dream world with no hold on reality. Positive people may have an attitude like Pollyanna, but they are not necessarily unrealistic. Positive person are very capable of understanding the reality of a cynic. They just change their mindset to see the reality from a different perspective.

With so many myths about positive mental attitude (PMA), its important to separate the truth from the fiction. Lets explore some of these myths and dive into the truths behind them.

Have you ever heard a negative person say that they arent negative; theyre just being realistic? This myth keeps people locked in a negative reality of their own creation.

A persons thoughts, whether positive or negative, do have an effect on their environment. If you think negatively, your mind will automatically seek out confirmation that the world is a terrible place. Seeing is believing, and your mind reinforces your belief that reality is negative. See how its a downward spiral of negativity? If you expect negative results, you are less likely to take risks and try new things. Negative thinking masks your impressions in fear.

Positive thinking works the same way. With a positive mental attitude, youll seek out positive choices and expect positive results. This helps you move past fear and try things that others may believe cant be done. This typically end in positive results.

A persons thinking helps determine their reality. Negative thinking is realistic for the negative thinker, but only because their thoughts make it true. Ironically, the positive thinking also sees reality, just in a different light. Both types of people see their own reality, and both consider it the reality.

Those who dont believe in positive thinking imagine that positive thinkers expect that their desire will manifest itself if they simply think positively about it. This couldnt be further from the truth.

Everyone who accomplishes anything whether its earning a million dollars or becoming an award-winning actor accomplish it the same way: by taking action. Positive people have an edge because they believe the object of their desire is attainable. They come from a can-do mindset. Their actions are not based on fear or scarcity, but based on possibilities. Thus, a positive attitude helps a person manifest their desires, not simply by dreaming about it, but by inspiring the person to take action.

Its the action behind the attraction that makes the dream come true.

People who believe this myth see a problem and believe that positive thinking will only ignore the ugliness of their reality. The truth is positive thinking doesnt ignore the problem; it helps you see the problem in a new light. In fact, you dont even see problems as problems. Think about it; regardless of how you react to an external situation, the situation will still be the same. If being upset doesnt change the outcome of a past situation, wouldnt it serve you, and your health, to see the positives?

A positive mental attitude creates a mindset of abundance, enthusiasm, and solutions. Instead of thinking about what cant be done, a positive thinker will not be constrained by can and cannot. A positive thinker is free to think of new ways to solve problems because they are not limited by fear of failure. When we are in a state of abundance, we provide a fertile ground for possibilities and making dreams a reality. We are in a state of allowance, openly accepting the gifts of life to flow to us. When I realized this principle and shifted my thinking habits, miracles started popping up in my life.

A positive mental attitude can and indeed does change reality by allowing a person to act in an entirely different way, thus harvesting entirely different results.

Successful men become successful only because they acquire the habit of thinking in terms of success. Napoleon Hill

Its easy to believe that people with a positive mental attitude have perfect lives and never dealt with real world hardships. Maybe people wouldnt be so positive if theyd endured a few difficult times in their lives. But the truth is that this is really just a justification for negative thinking.

I dont know a positive person who hasnt had real and serious trials in their lives. Theyve faced disappointment, death of loved ones, physical handicap, and pretty much the range of human experiences we all deal with. The difference is that these people didnt let those experiences change their outlook. A positive mental attitude means that you are in control of your own thoughts and feelings.

Responsibilities = our abilities to control our responses. paraphrasing Steven Covey

Every person has sorrows and trials that test them to the core, but only some people have the courage to act positively and with grace. A positive mental attitude doesnt mean a person has sidestepped a hard life. It simply means they choose to see and take part in the good things life has to offer, as opposed to only the negative.

In Mans Search for Meaning, Viktor Frankl an extraordinary Holocaust survivor talks about finding happiness and purpose while in a Nazi concentration camp. In his book, he argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space lies our freedom and power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom. Viktor E. Frankl, Mans Search for Meaning

Okay, lets admit it, some types of positive people are a little cheesy. Were talking about the kind who spout platitudes and expect everything to be perfect no matter what. But truly positive people arent Tony Robbins infomercials. Positive people have real thoughts and have setbacks and discouragement just like everyone else, but they are also resilient and look for ways to stay positive. And thats not cheesy, its just healthy thinking! And smart living!

Truly positive people do not expect perfection, but rather, they expect that every event is the best thing that could have happened in that moment. It is the only event that happened in that moment. Now that youre considering the event, that moment has past. You cannot go back and change the moment, so you have to accept what happened was the best, and move on to the next moment.

Even in external circumstances that seem out of our control, we can always control is our internal response. In fact, its the only thing we have absolute control over.

I genuinely believe that every moment is a gift, thus regardless of what is happening, it is perfect. There is always a gift, or lesson, to be taken away from that moment. I suspect that some of you are instantly thinking about death scenarios. What is there to gain from death?, you ask. Life is full of birth and deaths, this is reality. When death and change happens, we have to embrace reality, pick up and handle it to the best of our abilities. When this happens, we will gain different lessons due to our own stories, but perhaps the lesson could be:

Please note that when I speak about death, Im not just referring to death of a person or animal, but rather death of time, of change. Most of us instinctively resist change and hang on to the past with dear life. If you think about it, we are experiencing birth and death constantly, every moment consists of them; with each new moment, it is the death of the last moment and a birth for the current moment. Thats it. Embrace it with grace.

Next time you perceive that something crappy is happening to you, instead of reacting with anger and frustration, ask yourself the following questions:

Your mind has a secret invisible talisman. On one side is emblazoned the letters PMA (positive mental attitude) and on the other the letters NMA (negative mental attitude). A positive attitude will naturally attract the good and the beautiful. The negative attitude will rob you of all that makes life worth living.

Your success, health, happiness, and wealth depend on how you make up your mind!

A Spiritual Awakening Journey From The Wisdom Of Horses

Posted: at 6:44 pm

If you are comfortable with the words spiritual awakening journey then you are going to easily resonate with the information offered here. But if the words spiritual awakening journey make you feel a little weird, dont worry, I once thought meditating was only for monks or highly religious believers too!

I always like to offer another definition of a phrase or words that we use. It helps to clarify and understand the perspective of the information that we try to pass on. Plus I really am a very down to earth kind of gal anyway!

A spiritual awakening journey is as simple has having a moment when you realized that some new (or old) information suddenly made sense to you in a different way. It coincided with your inner belief system. As Oprah likes to say an, Ah, Ha! moment! So I use spiritual referring to the inner feeling part of you.

Mindfulness meditation is being highly conscious of your surrounding in a very focused manner. When you are being aware of your breathing you are bringing about mindfulness meditation. So when we bring the inner feeling part of ourselves and apply focused thought, we would achieve meditations from a spiritual journey side of things. (Really, dont think its a bigger more complicated deal that that! Keep it simple.)

So one day I sat quietly focusing on the horses in my care and asked them all to share in the answer to the question, If you could share some information with people that we do not know or understand about horses, what would that be?"

Here was the answer I received and the spiritual awakening journey I took:

You can either watch the video and listen to the Horse's Wisdom (by clicking on the 'Play' button) or you can read the words below.

We are a collective consciousness, connected yet individual by nature while on this earth plane, just as you are. Our state of well being is attached to source energy and we wish to teach you the same. You come to us and are drawn to us because you can feel our connection to source is strong and you long to share in the same.

We do not struggle with the same issues as humans regarding the sense of lack of. We do not see any lack of anything. We only see wholeness, evolution, creativity and wellness. As we strive to experience, we have chosen to experience with man kind hoping to bring a sense of balance and strength.

We would like you to understand nature to its fullness, to see how balance and going with the flow is what propels you forward without the unneeded pushing against you have done for so long. We ask that you become more patient with yourselves and in the doing of this you will find the connection to all living things. We test your honesty by challenging your knowingness. If it comes from the place of source we can hear you. If it does not, we rebel.

We are not the only creatures supplying this venue for you. Others, many others, in fact everything you call animal is at this stage of the evolutionary process with you. We have all manifested this event together and a collective agreement from different perspectives none the less.

There are no victims of circumstance only circumstance that create awareness and change. Struggle no more with each others way to find what is right and what is wrong, the best way is through the heart, always. There is no place for judgement in our world, we do not look at each other and condemn the horse who walks differently, who neighs differently or who eats differently. Our concern is for growth of spirit and strength in union that ignites our evolution of life.

Discipline is a matter of perspective, always. Upon this earth we are more like children than adults. We look upon things inquisitively and through choice of what pleases us. We can say No but may not understand the consequences of that choice like an adult would, therefore clarity is what is needed in dangerous situations or when our perspective clashes with what is required at the given moment. We are much stronger than humans physically and can endure much more, however we share many common emotions and can feel your energy when unfocused or when your intent is not of the purest form. We will die for you if that will bring a learning and as such you have done the same. Do not confuse abuse with discipline, these are separate issues. We teach respect, you teach respect. We teach love, you teach love. We have come by choice and so have you. We both agreed to co-create where growth, freedom and understanding is the goal of both species.

Poet Seers Sri Aurobindo

Posted: October 10, 2015 at 6:46 pm

Sri Aurobindo falls into the exclusive category of Poet-Seers who have achieved the highest realisations and have endeavoured to share that experience with the rest of humankind. The teachings and very utterances that spiritual masters of this calibre offer to the world come from the most sublime realms of consciousness that human beings can attain to. Their poetry transcends the page to become mantra, an invocation to the transcendental consciousness.

Sri Aurobindo, Indian nationalist, poet, philosopher and Spiritual Guru was born in Calcutta on 15th August 1872.

Sri Aurobindo spent his formative years in England studying at St Pauls and Trinity College where he excelled in the study of Literature and the Classics. In 1892 he returned to India where he became heavily involved in the Indian independence movement, he was a natural leader and one of the most radical nationalist politicians. Because of his radicalism, in 1908 Sri Aurobindo was arrested on suspicion of being involved in a bomb plot and was remanded in Alipore jail. It was here in jail that Sri Aurobindo had significant spiritual experiences, he became aware of a divine inner guidance and also realised the omnipresence of God even in a darkened prison cell.

Due to the commitment of Sri Aurobindos lawyer C.R.Das, Sri Aurobindo was released without charge. However this experience had changed Sri Aurobindos outlook. Henceforth he retired from politics and focused his energies on spirituality.

Sri Aurobindo travelled to Pondicherry, South India where he could practise yoga undisturbed. In 1914 he was later joined by a French women, Mira Richards who would later became known as the Mother of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Together they founded the Sri Aurobindo ashram, which began to attract disciples attracted to their dynamic reinterpretation of yoga.

As well as being a spiritual Guru to many disciples Sri Aurobindo was a noted poet, philosopher and writer. His main works were The Life Divine, The Synthesis of Yoga, Essays on the Gita and Savitri. Savitri was an epic work of poetry that he worked on for over 20 years.

Sri Aurobindo did notnegate the world like Indian yogis of the past. Instead Sri Aurobindo affirmed that all life is Yoga; through a conscious aspiration it is possible for man to evolve into a higher consciousness a consciousness of truth and inner harmony. Sri Aurobindo called this new consciousness the Supramental.

For over 40 years, Sri Aurobindo worked tirelessly for his vision of a divine life on earth. Through his writings and poetry he left a legacy which reflected his hopes of a golden future for humanity. Sri Aurobindo entered mahasamadhi on Dec 5th, 1950.

Personal Empowerment – Empowerment Institute

A Methodology for Creating Your Life As You Want It

Three decades ago, the idea of empowerment was fresh and daring. As young as the word itself, we, (David and Gail) both felt that empowerment would be at the heart of our lifes work. In our earliest days together, sitting with yellow legal pads at our kitchen table overlooking the Ashokan Reservoir and the Catskill Mountains, we planned our wedding ceremony and then seamlessly turned to designing our fledgling Empowerment Workshop. So intertwined was our love with our passion for this work, that ten days after we were married, we launched our first workshop. As we celebrate our third decade of marriage, our bond of love is stronger than ever and our passion for empowerment more compelling than ever.

All those years ago, neither we, nor the world, knew what empowerment really meant. We knew it was about helping people to grow and realize their full potential. We also knew that it was about more than just healing and fixing problems. But what exactly was its purpose? Why was this idea entering the lexicon of change strategies with such force? Over these three decades, an extraordinarily diverse, visionary, and committed community of people was attracted to our training programs to help us discover the answers to these questions.

Minds Of Power: What Is Personal Empowerment?

Posted: at 6:43 pm

Personal empowerment, what does it mean to you? Achieving it is simply developing your abilities to influence events and people around you.

Taking control of your life or a particular part of your life where you want to make an impact...

Some individuals may have a sense of it more in a community or global arena. This would be organized empowerment, where they take up arms so to speak to influence a community, a local or national government; maybe address a global issue.

Personal empowerment is more intimate; not necessarily organized in the previous examples. It could be something in our lives we want to address, perhaps we think of it more as personal growth.

It might be career driven or even something of a spiritual nature. In the work force you might want to create a new you to feel better about yourself, to reach a new goal. Typically you might embellish your persona and try to play the part.

Personal empowerment is in knowing you are the person you want to be beyond the faade youve created. An example of this might be having a desire to move up into management. Sometimes it is the difference between thinking and knowing something about you.

Individuals seek empowerment resources for any number of reasons. It could be to seek career advancement; work on a failing relationship; become a better parent; or get out of debt. In medical and psychological cases you might be trying to correct a bad habit; or overcome a learning or medical disability.

Whatever your need, the result will transition you to the place you need to be to address these issues...

Personal Empowerment Is A Real Solution Unfortunately it might come off as either egocentric or maybe New Age; however it is actually a crucial element to our being. It enables us to stand up for ourselves and others. Through it we can achieve a sense of responsibility and hold ourselves accountable. It is meant to make us better individuals.

The health profession uses personal empowerment in a number of instances. There is a disability or recovery model used to implement personal empowerment. These models are used for individuals with mental illness or individuals recovering from rape or other traumatic stress.

We might not think of empowerment as being an essential part of our being but if we consider our actions and the actions of others it would be obvious to us that it is a part of all beings. We empower our children and family members; we empower our employees. It is a natural nurturing thing to do.

Ten Guideposts to Self-Empowerment – Possibility Coaches

Posted: at 6:43 pm

Self empowerment is recognizing that within each of us is the capacity and ability to live from our natural state of being. The main characteristic of this state is peace. Simply put, your power is in your peace.

After many years of assisting hundreds of individuals as Life Coaches and Relationship Coaches, we have been able to identify what we feel are the ten essential guideposts or pillars to successfully achieving self empowerment.

Understand, that these guideposts are not steps to self empowerment. They are more like a checklist of requirements that you want to fulfill and complete to become empowered. There is no specific order for which to apply them. In fact, they can be processes you use together, simultaneously or separately, one at a time.

We call these ten aspects or attributes of self empowerment guideposts because self empowerment is a process. Each guidepost allows you to know if you are living from a position of empowerment. In other words, whether or not you are at peace.

So here they are. They are in no specific order. Apply each of them as tools and applications to create a greater sense of empowerment in your life. By mastering these guideposts, through your willingness to change, we guarantee that you will witness both subtle and extreme shifts in your life situations and conditions, as well as in your internal state of consciousness.

Guidepost #1: Recognition Recognition is about seeing to who, what, when and where you give your power away to. You may give it to other people, to situations and experiences or all of the above. It means you are giving external factors permission to control your emotional well-being. Once you recognize your participation in this disempowering process you can begin to break the cycle.

Recognition is also about seeing the talents and gifts you possess. If you are waiting for the world to recognize you, you may be waiting a very long time. You possess within you unique qualities and attributes that can guide you to feel empowered. Recognize them now!

Guidepost #2: Awareness Awareness is similar to recognition, yet it goes a little deeper. Awareness is the acknowledgment that you do disengage and disconnect from the power within you. It is also about defining why you disempower yourself in the first place.

Most important, the guidepost of awareness is about knowing that it is quite possible to take your power back at any time you decide to do so.

Guidepost #3: Responsibility To become empowered, it is imperative that you know exactly who and what you are responsible for in your life. When you do not know this parameter you are likely to live life as a guilt-ridden victim of circumstances. First and foremost, take responsibility for you own life and begin to feel more empowered. For a more detailed explanation on responsibility see our blog on this subject.

Guidepost #4: Releasing the Past Self empowerment, which is inner peace, can only happen in the present moment or now. When you hold grudges, criticize, judge and have a long list of regrets laced with guilt, you can never be at peace. Depression is the number one symptom of someone living in the past. Be open to letting go and forgiving. If you are challenged doing this on your own, team up with a professional who has been through the process and can assist you.

Guidepost #5: Releasing Worry About the Future Where the future and self empowerment meet is a fine line in the sand. As Life Coaches and Spiritual Teachers, here is how Chris and I see the future: you can plan for it; however, you must be open to giving up attempting to control it. Life, and what tomorrow brings you, is and always will be a mystery. Accept this truth; otherwise, you will continue to be stressed, anxious and fearful of tomorrow. Surrender to what is now and what is yet to be. Life requires risk-taking. Be open to flying with the eagle and not walking with the turkeys.

Guidepost #6: Trust Trust is a guidepost that moves you into the role of being a decision-maker for you and your life. Be willing to make choices and stand by them. If you do not like the results, make different choices. Trust is about having faith in the process. The process of life is always about creativity, expansion and who you are becoming. When you trust, you become more of who you authentically are. With trust you become grounded and empowered.

Guidepost #7: Cultivate a New Mindset Cultivating a new mindset is about your willingness to grow and expand as a human being. Observe your current, dominant thoughts, beliefs and habits. Do they serve you in a positive manner or do they keep you stuck? Cultivating a new mindset is also about acknowledging that you can control your mind and that it does not have to be the other way around. In our seminars and coaching sessions, we share a variety of mindset changing techniques that can move anyone toward a state of well-being and self-empowerment.

Guidepost #8: Share Your Greatness We have concluded that the process of Life goes beyond giving and receiving. It is all about sharing. If you are withholding your gifts and talents from the world and yourself, then you are preventing you from experiencing inner peace. Greatness is an active state that requires expression. Share your greatness! See greatness in others! Allow them to share with you.

Guidepost #9: Live in Alignment with Truth Most people live their life aligned to the myth that putting myself first is selfish and self-centered. As Life Coaches, we say, as long as you dont put you first you will never live in alignment with your truth and subsequently never be self-empowered. If you treat yourself like a second class citizen, how could you ever expect anyone else to treat you differently! Putting yourself first does not include doing so at the expense or harm of another person. It is about leading by example and doing what makes your heart sing.

Guidepost #10: Forgiveness All the guideposts we have listed are essential measuring sticks for inner peace and self-empowerment. If one guidepost was to standout above and beyond all the others in significance it would have to be forgiveness. Without real forgiveness, real peace remains elusive.

Real forgiveness is about forgiving others. More so, it is about forgiving yourself. Each of the first nine guideposts must contain a component of real forgiveness within them to activate the state of self empowerment. That is why Chris and I call them guideposts and that is why we say they can be practiced simultaneously or in any order you choose.

The purpose of these guideposts is to assist you to live an empowered life. Remember, self-empowerment is about knowing you never lost or could lose your power. You may have simply convinced yourself that you are powerless and that your happiness and peace resides elsewhere in some future universe or dimension.

In our practice, we have witnessed radical shifts in individuals when they have followed the Ten Guideposts to Self-Empowerment. We challenge you to print this blog and commit to following at least one guidepost today.
