Setting money aside for retirement is no easy feat, especially when near-term bills monopolize your limited income. Such is the plight for a large number of younger workers -- millennials whose earnings have yet to peak and who are grappling with various forms of debt, from student loans to credit card balances.
But surprisingly, younger workers don't cite debt as the primary reason they're behind on retirement savings. According to TD Ameritrade's 2019 Retirement Pulse Survey, 66% of millennials say they need to catch up on building their nest eggs. But the No. 1 reason they're behind is none other than high housing expenses.
If your housing costs are preventing you from building long-term savings, you should know that that's a dangerous path on which to continue. And the sooner you change course, the greater your chances of giving your nest egg a much-needed boost and salvaging your senior years.

Whether you rent your home or own it, your housing costs shouldn't exceed 30% of your take-home pay. And if you fall into the latter category, that 30% threshold should include your mortgage payments, property taxes, and homeowners insurance. If you're currently spending well above that level, it could easily explain why you're struggling to build retirement savings.
But here's the problem: If you don't build retirement savings, you're apt to suffer when your senior years roll around. That's because most companies today don't offer pensions, which means that without personal savings, your only means of paying the bills in retirement will be Social Security. And while those benefits are certainly helpful, they'll only replace about 40% of the average earner's former income. Most seniors, meanwhile, need a good 70% to 80% of their previous earnings to maintain a decent lifestyle, which means that counting on Social Security alone is a dangerous thing.
Furthermore, if your goal is to travel a lot in retirement or live in a city you've always dreamed of spending time in, then you may need more than 70% to 80% of your former income to make that a reality. And that's why you can't afford to continue putting off your retirement savings. If you do, you'll likely end up falling short in the future.
What's the solution? If you're a renter, it's fairly simple: Move to a cheaper apartment once your lease is up. Switch neighborhoods if that's what it takes, or find a roommate to bunk with to lower your housing costs and free up cash for your nest egg. If you're already a homeowner, things do get a little bit trickier, but as long as you're not underwater on your mortgage, you can sell your home and downsize to a smaller one or buy a similarly sized property in a more affordable neighborhood with lower taxes.
Is moving a major sacrifice? Yes. But if your housing costs are keeping you from building savings, it's a worthwhile one to make.
Imagine that by slashing your housing expenses, you manage to free up $500 a month to sock away for retirement. If you do so over 35 years and invest that money at an average annual 7% return (which is more than doable with a stock-centric portfolio), you'll wind up with $829,000. Free up $600 a month, and you'll be looking at $995,000, all other things being equal.
The younger you are when you start saving for retirement, the more opportunity you'll give your money to grow. If housing expenses are getting in the way of your nest egg, do something about them -- before you lose out on even more valuable time.

Wondering about the best way to save for retirement in your 40s? Mid-life is a crucial point in any savers timeline. While you dont necessarily have time on your side like you did in your 20s, you still have enough time to put together a plan to retire comfortably.
We all know we should save throughout our working lifetimes. But many of us just dont get around to it.
It can be easy to build some level of comfort and security into later life if youll just start saving early, money expert Clark Howard says. But most people dont start thinking about saving until they hit 40. If thats you, its never too late to start saving.
With a little planning, you still have time to squirrel away a sizeable nest egg and were going to show you how!
For most people, you cant even begin to start thinking about saving until you free up some money in your life. Thats where a budget comes in.
Budget doesnt have to be a scary word. Sometimes people are put off by the idea of budgeting because they dont know how to get started.
While there are a lot of approaches to budgeting, there are two in particular we return to again and again here on Clark.com:

Meanwhile, the envelope method is a time-tested traditional approach to budgeting that you may already be aware of. But well make it easy for you to get started with this approach, too!
Chances are youre already participating in the retirement savings plan at work and you may not even know it!
Thats because most employers will automatically default you into some level of contribution. The only way to get out of it is to specifically take steps to opt out of the plan. Which you would never do, right?
Furthermore, some employers even offer a company match when you contribute to your 401(k) or Roth 401(k). Weve got a full explanation of the similarities and difference of both investment choices here.
If your employer is generous like this, you want to be sure youre contributing at least the minimum to pick up the full match. Otherwise, youre leaving free money on the table!
Note: If you have children, you may wonder whether saving for their college education should take a higher priority than saving for your own retirement.
Scholarships, grants, in-state tuition, community college and working during school can help your son or daughter deal with the cost of education. But you dont have any of those options for your later life. The only one who can make retirement happen for you is you!
Thats led Clark to make a pretty bold pronouncement over the years:
Do not save a penny for your childs college education until you fully fund your own retirement, he says. There are no scholarship plans for your golden years!
Finally, when you want to save for retirement in your 40s, you should also invest outside of the workplace. That often involves a tax-free account called a Roth IRA thats available to most people.

We all know that life happens and things can get in the way of your savings plans. Maybe thats been the story of your life up until now.
Thats why its so important to have an emergency savings account. With an emergency fund, you wont have to halt your efforts to save for retirement in your 40s each time you see the dark clouds of a rainy day approaching.
Clark recommends you have between three to six months of living expenses stored in your emergency fund to deal with bumps and bruises of life.
Its not what somebody makes, its what it costs them to live each month, he says. I dont want somebody to be overwhelmed by [the three to six month number]. I want them to gradually build up the money for living expenses.
The key thing with your emergency savings is you want to keep the money liquid for when you need it on a moments notice. And you also want to earn a high rate of interest on the money to achieve compound growth.
Fortunately, there are so many places you can stash cash today. For example, there are a variety of online banks and fintech startups that pay a high rate of interest.
In fact, its not uncommon right now to earn at least 2% APY on your savings with these players versus the 0.09% or whatever paltry number you see with the traditional banks. You just have to look in the right places, which our guide to the best online banks will help you do.
Are you still paying high interest rates on a credit card? Now is a great time to get a lower interest card and do a balance transfer. Generally, youll need a FICO credit score of around 720 to get the best balance transfer offers. Reducing your debt today is one surefire way to get on the path to retirement tomorrow. If youre carrying a lot of debt right now, you have at least one thing to be thankful for: With interest rates so low compared to what they have been in the past, what youre paying each month to service that debt is very favorable. Take advantage of this unique moment in American history and keep reducing your debt.
Particularly if youre around 45 or older, Clark Howard recommends looking at a 15-year mortgage instead of a 30-year one when youre buying or refinancing a home.
I know it might mean you have to buy a little bit smaller home to be able to afford the monthly payment on a 15-year loan if youre in your mid-40s or later, Clark says, but the benefit to your wallet and your financial security will be extraordinary.

Just know this: The short-term sacrifice of a higher monthly payment on a 15-year loan will put you in good shape down the road. Thats because the latest research shows most happy retirees go into retirement either mortgage-free or with a five-year time horizon of wiping out their mortgage debt.
It doesnt matter whether youve been saving all along or youre just getting started saving for retirement in your 40s. Either way, you can still have a nice retirement if you just have a plan and stay focused on it.

Here’s how to keep health-care costs down in retirement – CNBC

Retirees will spend a significant amount of money on health care. Still, many older Americans don't plan properly for it.
A healthy male-female couple retiring at age 65 in 2019 can now expect to shell out $285,000 on health-care expenses in retirement, according to Fidelity Investments' annual analysis.
Fidelity's analysis, which assumes the couple are eligible for Medicare, includes premiums, copays and other cost-sharing expenses, along with prescription-drug costs.
Two-thirds of retirees said dealing with health issues was among their top worries about retirement, according to a new study by Wells Fargo. Most people assume Medicare will cover their costs, but that is not the case.
Expenses that are not covered by Medicare dental coverage, basic vision and over-the-counter medicines would be on top of that $285,000 estimate.
The estimate also excludes long-term care costs.
According to Fidelity, about 15% of the average retiree's annual costs will be used for health-care-related expenses, including Medicare premiums and out-of-pocket expenses.
Of course, Medicare is the primary insurer for the 65-and-older crowd. Provided that you've paid your dues in the workforce for at least 10 years, you'll qualify for Part A at no cost, which covers hospital stays, skilled nursing facilities and hospice care.
You can opt in to Part B, which covers doctor visits and outpatient care, but requires a monthly premium.
You may also choose to enroll in Medicare Part C, or Medicare Advantage. These are plans from private insurers that can add more coverage such as vision, dental or prescription benefits.
Alternatively, if you have Medicare Parts A and B, you can apply for a supplemental insurance policy, called Medigap, to help cover health costs such as copayments, coinsurance and deductibles.
If you only want prescription coverage, you can opt for Medicare Part D instead of C.
To weigh what's best, your State Health Insurance Assistance Program, or SHIP, has free counseling to help find the right plan.

There are also steps you can take to mitigate expenses where Medicare falls short.
For starters, review your plan. There are lots of Medicare plans available, with different levels of coverage. For example, with Medicare Parts A and B, you can see any doctor who accepts Medicare, but with a Medicare Advantage plan, it will be less expensive if you see doctors and go to hospitals that are in the plan's network.
Medicare open enrollment for 2020 runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. During this time, you can change from original Medicare to a private Medicare Advantage plan or switch back to original Medicare.
Compare prices for plans in your area through Medicare.gov or on your state insurance department site.
Fund a health savings account. Get ahead of health-care costs by investing tax-free dollars in an HSA before you enroll in Medicare.
Not only is the money contributed tax-deductible, but both the earnings and withdrawals as long as they're for health-care expenses are also not taxed.
Once medicare coverage begins, you can no longer contribute to the HSA but you can tap those funds to pay for any medical costs that are not covered, including copays and other out-of-pocket expenses.
Manage your retirement income. Generally speaking, the more you make, the higher your premiums will be for Medicare Parts B and D.
Once you've reached retirement, manage distributions from all your taxable, tax-deferred and Roth accounts in a way that will keep you in the lowest tax bracket as possible. Tap the accounts that allow tax-free withdrawals first such as Roth accounts and brokerage accounts, which are only taxable when you sell appreciated assets to distribute cash.
Distributions from HSA accounts, Roth IRA accounts and cash value life insurance policies don't count in the formula that determines your Medicare Part B premiums.
"Figuring out optimal withdrawal strategies is where a good accountant or financial planner can help clients save a lot of money," said physician and certified financial planner Carolyn McClanahan, founder of Life Planning Partners in Jacksonville, Florida.
Consider long-term care insurance. If you want to make sure you have funds to cover assisted living, nursing home or at-home care, look into buying a long-term care insurance policy.
These policies help cover the cost of care for two to five years or longer. Even though insurance premiums have been jumping by double digits, many financial advisors typically recommend maintaining this coverage for now.

Community and accountability are key to longevity in a health and fitness lifestyle.
I had the pleasure to interview Amanda Tress. Amanda is the CEO + Founder, of FASTer Way to Fat Loss. She developed the program after being put on high blood pressure medication and suffering from severe food sensitives along with a metabolic disorder. After years of research and fine- tuning, she was able to eliminate her medication, metabolic disorder and food sensitives with a dairy and gluten free lifestyle. Thank you so much for chatting with us Amanda! What is your backstory?
My journey to revolutionize the health and fitness industry actually started when I was a teenager. I struggled with a metabolic disorder, high blood pressure, and severe food sensitivities. My doctor never asked me to change my lifestyle or diet, and instead simply put me on medication. I was only 17.
When I entered college, I decided to take matters into my own hands and educate myself regarding whole-food nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. After a lot of research and trial and error, I was able to wean myself off of blood pressure medication. I quickly decided to become a personal trainer and nutrition coach to empower other people to get healthy as well.
Whole-food nutrition, consistent exercise, and a paleo food log helped me feel less bloated and also kept my blood pressure stable. However, I was still dealing with food sensitivities and exhaustion after delivering my first two babies.
In 2015, I started hearing about intermittent fasting and carb cycling. The strategies sounded extreme but after diving into the research, I decided to experiment with them on my own. The results were astounding! I was able to shed the final baby weight after delivering my son, increase my energy with carb cycling, AND eliminate my food sensitivities with a dairy-free and gluten-free lifestyle.
Instead of simply implementing IF with a paleo food log, I added an IIFYM approach (which is a flexible dieting system that says you can eat whatever you want If It Fits Your Macros) and diligently tracked my macronutrients (macros). I cycled carbohydrates based on the workouts I planned to do each day of the week.
After years of straddling the fence between feeling healthy and experiencing near-debilitating health problems, I found the answer. And I knew I had to share it. As a result, I created the FASTer Way to Fat Loss.
Can you share your top three lifestyle tweaks that you believe will help support peoples journey towards better wellbeing?
Making simple lifestyle changes can totally transform someones health. This usually shocks people who are used to taking drastic measures in an attempt to lose weight. Here are my top tips:
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?
Last spring, I poured my time and energy into writing my first book, The FASTer Way to Fat Loss. My desire for the book was to take the FASTer Way lifestyle to the masses. Within days of being published, The FASTer Way to Fat Loss became a top-selling book on Amazon! I couldnt wait for thousands of men and women to get their hands on my program secrets.
The excitement took a turn, though, when the Amazon reviews became a breeding ground for trolls and haters. Critics of my program used the Amazon platform to spew hateful things about me and the program I worked tirelessly to create.
I quickly learned that Amazon is the wild, wild west of retail. Anyoneeven those who have never purchased or read the bookcan leave a negative review and say countless untrue things about me, my team, my program, and even our online community. Within just a few days, we also discovered a counterfeit version of my book was being sold on Amazon as a scam. Weve gone back and forth with Amazon to remove the copycat, but the knock-off book becomes available again as soon as its removed. Its an ongoing battle.
That experience was instrumental in developing a thick skin when I was being criticized and attacked publicly. This quote by Theodore Roosevelt continually inspires me to stay focused on my goals regardless of the criticism I receive: It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.
Can you share a story about the biggest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?
When I first started the FASTer Way to Fat Loss over three years ago, I had 13 revenue streams and was going in way too many directions. Im an entrepreneur at heart and my attention was largely divided between getting the FASTer Way off the ground and growing my mentorship and full-service digital marketing agency for women in fitness. Both businesses were successful, and both needed my full attention.
After delivering my third child, I knew I had to make a change and focus all my efforts into the FASTer Way to Fat Loss. Thats when we were finally able to create major traction in the marketplace, and the business took off from there!
When it comes to health and wellness, how is the work you are doing helping to make a bigger impact in the world?
Ive created the most effective fat loss program on the market as an answer to all the problems that other popular programs have created for millions of men and women. The FASTer Way to Fat Loss has transformed the lives of over 100,000 men and women around the world. None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?
Believe it or not, the worst boss I ever worked for before becoming an entrepreneur was the catalyst for my success. He created a toxic work environment for the whole team, and particularly targeted me. Ill never forget how horribly he treated me. Thats when the lightbulb went offI knew I was made for more and I wanted to do whatever it took to become my own boss. And let me tell you, no one has ever made me feel worthless or incapable again. I wake up every day with a smile because I have the opportunity to work for myself and build a business with excellence.
If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of wellness to the most amount of people, what would that be?

While not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur or CEO, I know without a doubt that this is my life purpose. Having that confidence and drive is what helps me overcome the obstacles along the way. Here are three things I wish someone would have told me:

We are passionate about environmental change in the FASTer Way. We believe in eliminating as many toxins from the body as possible, and in doing so, reducing our carbon footprint and the amount of toxins in our environment. In addition to focusing on whole-food nutrition, we also practice detoxes throughout the year to help clients focus on what were putting in and, on our bodies, and how that affects their overall health as well as the environment. I believe everyone is capable of making small changes that can lead to big results.

Mirror offers classes in different disciplines, and with different workout lengths and fitness levels. It comes with the mirror, a Bluetooth heart-rate monitor and six fitness bands. Each workout is a "body weight" exercise so you don't need additional equipment like dumbbells. It's only available in the continental US.

Peloton's $2,245 Bike is a spin bike designed to mimic what it's like to ride on the road. It has an adjustable seat and handle bars and features a 21.5-inch touchscreen display. Use the display to participate in live and on-demand classes from home -- this feature costs an additional $39 per month. (It's 1,895, plus 39 per month, in the UK. It's not yet available in Australia.)

Running is hard, but Peloton's Tread makes it a lot more fun.
The $3,995 Peloton Tread is a smart treadmill. Pay $39 per month to access Peloton's live and on-demand Tread classes. Train for a beginner 5K on the track or participate in an advanced high intensity class alongside other seasoned runners. The Tread features a 32-inch touchscreen display, too, so you can easily follow along with whatever guided classes you select, access your profile settings and view your stats, including calories burned, from each workout. (It's not yet available in the UK or Australia.)

Mirror, the Peloton Bike and the Peloton Tread were installed for me by professional dealers sourced by Mirror and Peloton. Mirror charges an extra $250 for the delivery and installation; Peloton includes it with your purchase, which is good because the Tread, in particular, weighs over 450 lbs. (over 200 kg).
After each installation, it was my turn to download the Mirror app or access the Peloton touchscreen display to create my account, sign up for classes and start exercising.
ClassPass Live was the only service out of the four that had a simple do-it-yourself installation process. It involved connecting the Google Chromecast to my TV and making sure the ClassPass app was functioning properly.
From there, testing was all about trying out a bunch of different classes and seeing how well the app, TV screen or display made it for me to follow along, improve my technique and stay motivated. Value also plays a large part here, since the products I tested ranged from the $79 ClassPass Live service with a $19 monthly fee to the $3,995 Peloton Tread with a $39 monthly fee.
Here are some questions I routinely asked myself:
ClassPass Live offers the best overall value and has my favorite classes (both in terms of variety and how they're filmed). Mirror has the best heart-rate monitor integration via its easy-to-read screen. Both Peloton products are well-designed and keep you motivated by displaying real-time competitive rankings every time you take a class.
There's no overall winner here because each product or service offers something different. There are a lot more smart fitness gadgets out there, too -- from electricity-generating treadmills to home boxing systems -- we've just barely scratched the surface.

Medicare insurers are starting to offer big Apple Watch discounts – The Verge

In a major step in Apples push to market its Apple Watch as a health and fitness device, a private Medicare insurer is now subsidizing the cost of the Watch for its members, as first reported by CNBC.
Devoted Health members can put $150 of Wellness Bucks toward the cost of an Apple Watch. That would shave off just over a third of the price of the $399 Apple Watch Series 5. Wellness Bucks arent specifically allocated for wearables; they can also go toward fitness classes and weight loss programs.
Devoted Health isnt the first insurer to make it easier for people to get an Apple Watch Apple has partnered with insurance companies like Aetna and UnitedHealthcare, for instance but Devoted Health is a Medicare Advantage insurer, which is a private company that covers Medicare benefits for older Americans.
Though Devoted Health is a relatively small insurer CNBC says the company has about 4,000 members and is only available in Florida the movement is still significant: 20 million Americans received care through Medicare Advantage in 2018, according to figures from Kaiser Family Foundation. That suggests momentum in Apples apparent plans to target Medicare insurers, as CNBC says that several of the Medicare Advantage plans they contacted were also considering an Apple Watch fitness benefit.
Some of the Apple Watchs features appear to court this market: heart rate monitoring and fall detection are among the perks of newer Apple Watch models. Working with insurers in this way could swell Apple Watch sales as older Americans use them to monitor their habits. Fitbit is also competing in this space, and some insurers offer Fitbits instead of Apple Watches to achieve essentially the same thing. Some insurers, such as Blue Shield of California, have offered people enrolled in their programs incentives for hitting their wearable goals.

COVINGTON, Ga. -Local fitness boutique Moxie Fitness will team up with Fit4Prevention.org to host an open house and donation class Friday, Oct. 18.
The open house will be held from 5-8 p.m. and will offer snacks, mocktails, studio tours and door prizes. A donation class will start at 6:30 p.m. and will consist of a fusion class which is a combination of all three programs that they offer, Yoga, Pilates and Barre.
Fit 4 Preventionis a national movement to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention through fitness and wellness. Their goal is to inspire people to reduce their risk of cancers by adopting a healthier, more active lifestyle in a way that sparks their inner champion.
All proceeds from Fit 4 Prevention benefit Keep A Breast and its mission to empower young people around the world with breast health education and support. Their goal for the month of October is to raise one million dollars through donation classes with studio partners nation-wide.
