Chicago Towns First Vegan Stuffed Crust Pizza Is On The Way – Delish.com

Posted: December 18, 2019 at 2:49 am

Once Christmas is out the way, people tend to feel the need to get healthy. I mean, eating 900 mince pies a day washed down with copious amounts of festive booze will have quite an effect on how full-of-beans you feel. So, its understandable why people might be in the market for a health kick.

A good way of getting your body back into an acceptable state is by partaking in Veganury, which basically means going vegan for January.

With this in mind, companies are announcing all sorts of vegan launches next month, which is great.

The latest is Chicago Town, which has its first vegan pizza hitting the shelves in early January 2020.

The stuffed crust pizza, which you cook in the oven, features BBQ jackfruit, peppers, onions and dairy-free mozzarella. And the crust is stuffed with tangy tomato sauce.

This new pizza will be available in Tesco, Asda, and Iceland from early January 2020, and will set you back 3.50.

Dominos also recently announced that its first vegan pizza will be with us soon too.

After rumours started doing the round earlier this month that Dominos was releasing a pizza for all our vegan pals out there, The Metro asked if there were any more details for us.

A spokesperson told them: The rumours are true. We have been working hard to perfect a vegan recipe with the unmistakable taste of Dominos fresh dough and cheesy goodness.

Were not quite there yet, but vegan pizza lovers shouldnt have to wait much longer.

So, theres no exact date for the Dominos pizza, but at least you know the Chicago Town one will tide you over for now.

Czech Brand to Launch Nutritionally Complete Vegan Burger in the United States – VegNews

Posted: at 2:49 am

Czech Republic food brand Mana recently debuted a nutritionally complete plant-based burger in the United States, Czech Republic, and Germany. The Mana Burger is made from plant proteins such as pea, algae, mung bean, hemp, and brown rice and fortified with a variety of vitamins and minerals to create the ideal balance of protein (20 grams), fat (22 grams), carbohydrates (8.2 grams), and fiber (4.2 grams). It is also rich in omega-3 DHA and EPA fatty acids, and delivers a 22-gram mix of five different plant oils, including algae and flaxseed. Created by entrepreneur Jakub Krejcik out of his garage in 2014, the Mana brand began with Mana Powder, a nutritionally complete meal replacement that was Europes first functional food. We are thrilled to already be sharing our powder with the US and plan to do the same with the burger next summer, Krejciktold media outlet Prague Morning. This is not a food intended for vegans only. On the contrary, it is an alternative for lovers of meat and beef burgers who want to eat healthy food thats nutritionally complete and environmentally friendly. We are convinced that this is the healthiest plant burger in the world. Pre-sales of the Mana Burger are now available with delivery to the US to begin next summer. Mana plans to gradually expand its product to supermarkets soon after.

Vegans Are Sharing the Most Pathetic Desserts They’ve Ever Been Served at Restaurants – Munchies

Posted: at 2:49 am

Right now on Twitter, Oreo is running a promoted tweet with a short video encouraging everyone to leave one specific brand of sandwich cookie for Santa this year. It's just as cringe as it sounds, and the only reason we're not dragging Oreo all the way to the North Pole and back for the line "slide my sleigh into your DMs" is because it's the holidays.

Anyway, while Santa's being demanding AF about his cookie selection, a vegan woman just wished she'd gotten any cookieor any kind of real dessert, periodwhen she celebrated her birthday at a Melting Pot restaurant.

"I went out for my birthday and Im vegan so they gave me a single slice of banana instead of cake," the woman, who calls herself Yazmin on Twitter, posted, attaching a photo of that sad fruit piece, topped with an equally sad candle. (Obviously they couldn't give her the entire banana, not when they're going for $120,000 each.)

Someone surrounded this depressing still life with the words "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate syrup, and the way the last three letters in "Birthday" sat on each other's shoulders just made the entire thing even more disheartening.

Her tweet collected almost 200 responses, and a significant number of them were from other vegans who had been served equally ridiculous attempts at "dessert" at restaurants. "One time i went out for my bday and they gave me a cup of ice with a cherry on top," someone else responded. Another added that she'd just been given an entire cup of whipped creamwhich she couldn't eat, because it was a dairy product.

So many food crimes disguised as desserts were reported: a half-peeled orange with a candle on top. A fruit salad that only included two grapes and a strawberry. Cocoa mixed with sugar water. "I got a single strawberry, and I'm not even vegan," another woman chimed in.

How is it, in 2019, the Year of Our Lizzo and Savior, that restaurants don't have some kind of go-to vegan dessert on hand to pass out to guests who are celebrating something, whether it's a birthday, an anniversary, or just the fact that they officially gave their last fuck earlier in the afternoon. (And if you're thinking of treating vegans the same way you'd treat Santa, Oreo says that although its products are vegetarian-friendly, the cookies might have come into cross-contact with milk, so it doesn't consider them to be officially vegan.)

But a vegan artist named Asher might have the right idea. "Went to Olive Garden on my birthday and they just gave me more breadsticks," he tweeted.

Yeah, that sounds good. Let's go with that.

Megan Fox Sends Her Kids To A Vegan School Since It’s In Line With Her Beliefs – Delish

Posted: at 2:49 am

Steve GranitzGetty Images

Megan Fox has been very candid about how she raises her three kids by encouraging them to be whoever they want to be. This past Monday, Megan and her husband Brian Austin Green spoke with People about parenting and why they send their kids to a vegan school.

Fox told the outlet that sending her three kids to a vegan school is totally in line with her personal beliefs and how she raises them. We send them to an organic, sustainable, vegan school where theyre seed-to-table, they plant their own food. They grow it, they harvest it and they take it to local restaurants to sell it, so they understand how all of that works, Megan said.

According to Yahoo! Megan used to follow a raw, vegan diet of mostly fruits and veggies, but she lost too much weight and readjusted her eating habits. She then said that the decision to send her kids to a vegan school is because of her love for animals.

Im very specific about never harming animals. We dont step on ants; we dont do things like that. We dont rip flowers out of the ground, because we think theyre beautiful," she said. "I teach them that plants are sentient beingsthey have feelings, thoughts and emotionsso thats what were doing.

While this definitely all seems a bit extra, I've never heard of vegan schools before so it's interesting to hear that there are options for children to learn more about plant-based eating through a "seed-to-table" experience in the classroom. And, uh, hey, Megan! Ever tried any of our vegan recipes?

A birthday candle in a banana: why fruit is by far the most offensive vegan dessert – The Guardian

Posted: at 2:49 am

What a way to celebrate! Restaurants are slow to cater for vegans needs. Photograph: wwing/Getty Images/iStockphoto

Theres nothing vegans love more than to share photos of food. We are basically meat porn dudes but with nut-based cheeses and less gout. If it exists, you have definitely seen an artfully wonky photo of it on Instagram accompanied by a graphic caption and a salivating emoji.

Veganism has come on in leaps and bounds in the past few years, particularly outside of businesses catering specifically for vegans. Its rising popularity has brought affordable supermarket own-brand meat substitutes, an oat milk rush to rival the Texas oil boom and, famously, the Greggs sausage roll. But this revolution has yet to hit the mainstream dessert market. Its not that there are no options available there is an entire line of vegan Ben & Jerrys, for example. But when it comes to eating out, we are often catapulted back to the dark days of 2009, when the only vegan option on most menus was, jacket potato with beans, please no butter.

A string of underwhelming vegan desserts has recently gone viral as social media users share stories of paltry pudding substitutes in restaurants including a glass of ice with a cherry on top, Happy Birthday written directly on to a plate in dairy-free ganache and worst of all a single slice of banana with a birthday candle on top.

Fruit is, without a doubt, the most offensive vegan dessert. There is no greater torture than being sat at a table with 15 other people tucking into slabs of chocolate fudge cake while you work on a bowl of semi-defrosted melon chunks or a dollop of sorbet. A friend of mine went to a wedding last year to be served some sort of blackcurrant curd that looked and tasted like the inside of a bouncy ball.

The thing is, it doesnt take much to make vegans happy. My favourite dessert is a slice of Co-op apple pie (an accidentally vegan product) dumped in a bowl of Alpro custard (total price: 2-3). So please, I beg: give us ice-cream, custard, a plate of biscuits at least. But fruit, truly, is worse than no dessert at all.

One Planet Pizza: 2019 Re-Wrote the Rulebook for Vegan Business – vegconomist – the vegan business magazine

Posted: at 2:49 am

OnePlanetPizza

In another end of year in vegan business guest post, the UKs much-loved frozen pizza brand One Planet Pizza drops by to tell us why 2019 was such a huge year for veganism and whats in store for 2020 including some big news OPP will be launching the UKs first 100% vegan home delivery service of frozen pizzas that you can personalise.

Wow. Just when you think veganism couldnt get any more mainstream than it has for the past 3 years, 2019 comes along and rewrites everything all over again!

Even more celebrities are proudly embracing plant-based diets and declaring that theyve ditched meat and dairy for their health or various other reasons. But weve seen an even higher class of famous people make news this year, from Robbie Williams to Jack Black. As a proud vegan and co-founder of a small vegan business, I couldnt be happier these big names are endorsing this new wave of healthy living and cruelty-free culture.

Its no surprise that weve seen an equally impressive abundance of new and exciting vegan food options appear throughout UK supermarkets, major restaurant chains and on our high streets. Even Greggs cashed in on the rise of veganism and nobody is complaining. Their vegan sausage roll has been a game changer without a doubt and has effectively destroyed the longstanding myth that vegan food is expensive and limited to the healthy eating health conscious.

As the UKs leading frozen vegan pizza company, weve also been riding this wave of popularity throughout 2019. Weve seen our sales double and have had some exciting new retailers such as Booths come on board (were now sold in 15 of their stores in the North of England), as well as now exporting to the Middle East.

We also managed to scoop up some national awards this year, including VIVA! 2019s Best Vegan Pizza and Vegan Lifes Best Vegan Pizza. Not to mention, me and Mike (my Dad and business partner) also completed a marathon together back in the summer, raising over 500 for the animal charity VIVA!.

With 2019 in mind, we have some pioneering concepts ready to launch in the new year. As the vegan market continues to grow and evolve, we want to offer our customers something theyve never had before. Cue One Planet Pizza Direct; our new home delivery service. In 2020 were launching the UKs first 100% vegan home delivery service of frozen pizzas that you can personalise. This is launching on our brand-new website in January and well be keeping everyone in the loop on our socials leading up to the big launch date.

On top of this, were also launching our brand-new Gluten Free Thee Cheezly Margherita in January. This ground-breaking new flavour will be the first of its kind and were incredibly excited for everyone to try it for the first time. Weve never seen or tasted a free-from base anything like it and we believe weve raised the bar when it comes to gluten-free frozen pizza.

Were just as excited to see what other food products will reach the shelves next year. Its a wonderful time to be vegan and its surely never been easier. Oatly chocolate ice cream, anyone?

McDonald’s to Introduce a 100% Vegan Society Approved Meal in January – vegconomist – the vegan business magazine

Posted: at 2:49 am

HomeFood & BeverageMcDonalds to Introduce a 100% Vegan Society Approved Meal in January McDonald's

This year has seen vegan versions of classic burgers around the world, with McDonalds being conspicuously absent from the list so far, other than the PLT trial in Canada and the new McVeggie in New Zealand. In January it will finally launch a fully vegan meal, even with vegan cooking methods, meaning it will not share the grill with meat.

After seeing an 80% increase in vegetarian orders over the past year, McDonalds has decided to respond to demand and provide a fully vegan option. Next month, to benefit from Veganuary, it will introduce Veggie Dippers, an alternative to Chicken McNugget, which will later be a full meal available as a wrap or sandwich.

According to The Independent, the dippers, which consist of rice, sundried tomato pesto, and split peas, will be available initially in the UK. The chain plans to serve the meal with vegan-friendly french fries; a McDonalds spokesperson confirmed to The Independent that both the ingredients and cooking method, unlike with other recent vegan options in fast food, have been certified by The Vegan Society.

It goes without saying that fast food is detrimental for both our health and the planet, and it is far more sustainable to prepare meals at home, however many people lack the time and seek convenience. Fast food manufacturers play an integral role in increasing the overall eco-friendliness of our food supply. Hopefully, once a wider range of vegan options continues to appear on menus everywhere, more people will consider switching to a primarily plant-based diet. Only wide scale action by consumers and corporations alike can stem the tide of the pending climate crisis.

McDonalds UKs Head of Marketing Thomas ONeill said: In the last 12 months weve seen an 80% uplift in customers ordering vegetarian options at McDonalds, so it is time for the brand famous for the dippable McNugget to launch a dippable option for our vegetarian, vegan and flexitarian customers. The Veggie Dippers are a delicious addition to our menu and were looking forward to seeing what customers make of our first vegan Extra Value Meal and Happy Meal in the New Year.

Flore Vegan Forced to Close, Developers Tout Gentrification Plan Online – Eater LA

Posted: at 2:49 am

A major strip of Silver Lake is headed for some serious transition, and Flore Vegan restaurant is at the center of the struggle.

Engine Real Estate recently bought the property that houses the 13-year-old plant-based restaurant, and only this week served Flore with a 30-day notice to vacate. The restaurant had been operating on a month-to-month lease for some time, but had been hoping to stay in their current home long term. Meanwhile, Engine is touting itself as a change agent for many of the communities in which it operates, stating on its website that the companys primary goal is gentrifying neighborhoods of Los Angeles, such as Silver Lake, Echo Park, and Highland Park.

Owner Miranda Megill actually leases two spaces on the 3800 block of Sunset: the retail shop Le Pink & Company, and Flore Vegan. Megills longstanding presence on Sunset between Hyperion and Lucille predates most of the new guard of restaurants in central Silver Lake, including Sawyer, 33 Taps, and the already-closed California Sun.

In May, Megill began talks with her previous landlord to negotiate a new lease, and was assured of the renewal at an in-person meeting. She was also informed that her landlord Aviano LLC was in the process of refinancing, and couldnt renew leases at that time.

In the same month, Aviano LLC received an ADA complaint about Flores bathroom, and required Megill to make it ADA compliant. She paid $2,500 out of pocket for the expense. After completing the bathroom work, Megill says her landlord went silent as she continued to ask for a lease renewal, and was told to wait for the buildings refinance, which would likely occur in August.

Megill remained in a holding pattern until late October, when the property manager shared that the building was in escrow. She reached out to Aviano for contact information from the new owners, the Venice-based Engine Real Estate. According to Megill, no one responded, that is until yesterdays receipt of the notice to vacate. Megill requested and received only a slight an extension, which leaves Flore open until January 31.

It appears that Engine Real Estate will rework and re-tenant the entire building, while leaning into its gentrification ethos. According to Megill, the company is even marketing the vacancies before existing tenants have moved out. Neighboring businesses Matrushka and Ragg Mopp will remain for another year under previous lease agreements.

Flores pending closure is only one of the endless gentrification stories throughout Los Angeles, and few areas are immune. Longstanding neighborhood restaurants are at the whim of landlords asking for higher rents, and developers who often push out familiar tenants and in some cases even co-opting their name on the way out the door. The issue is pervasive across Los Angeles not only on the retail but also the residential side, with gentrification fears extending well beyond Silver Lake and into Boyle Heights, South LA, Highland Park, and elsewhere.

Eater reached out to Engine Real Estate for comment, and so far has not not yet heard back.

Megill states that moving Flore and Le Pink is impossible. Its not affordable as a mom and pop. I opened it in 2007. (Engine) didnt even speak with me at all. Most landlords would appreciate keeping my business there, but they have a completely different goal to position (the building) like an Abbot Kinney corridor with Doc Martens.

This is a developing story.

UPDATE 4:36 p.m.: Engine Real Estate removed the gentrification description from its website, along with all photos involving the Silver Lake property.

Poor inventory management weighs down the apparel industry – Supply Chain Dive

Posted: at 2:48 am

Apparel businesses don't look too merry and bright this holiday season. So far this year, 11 of the 16 major retail bankruptcieswere filed by companies that mostly sell apparel, footwear or accessories and the majority of those are dominated by private label products. Though poor inventory management alone is unlikely to drive a retailer to such dire straits, good inventory hygiene is gaining importance in the minds of analysts and investors.

Last week, Moodys cut its fourth-quarter forecast for department stores, heavily reliant on apparel for years, predicting a 20% dip in operating income instead of the earlier prediction of 15%. "Inventory management is critical to success," reads the note, adding most retailers have maxed out operational efficiency gains and winners have managed to better match inventories and consumer demand.

Moodys also lowered its outlook for apparel brands in October from positive to stable. Analysts cited a stronger U.S. dollar, which increased cost of goods sold for apparel importers. Tariff pressure, as well, triggered inventory pull-forward before the expected Dec. 15 implementation of List 4B, though the round was canceled last week.

UBS named inventory growth as a top reason it is bearish on apparel, footwear and accessory sales for the 2019 holiday season. UBS noted in September that inventory growth for apparel, footwear and accessories has outpaced sales growth for four quarters running predicting higher than normal promotions in Q4 and lower gross margins.

"I'm hearing so many companies that brought in inventory a lot sooner than expected, in order to get ahead of what was going to be some tariff increases,"Moodys apparel and footwear analyst Mike Zuccarotold Supply Chain Dive.

But, tariffs, declining consumer spending on apparel and a cooling global economy may only be exacerbating a flaw lurking beneath the modern apparel industry for years.

The problem is the way apparel is sourced and the priorities of operations teams dictating those purchases, which leads to overbuying, argued John Thorbeck, chairman of Chainge Capital, which specializes in lead-time optimization, at the Sourcing Journal Summit earlier this year. The result is markdowns.

Coresight Researchput the value of retail markdowns at $300 billion in 2018 representing 12% of non-grocery retail sales. Apparel retailers had a 60% full-price sell-through rate, which Coresightchalked up to poor inventory management.

"What other industry starts with a 65-70% initial margin and ends up at one or two? Thats the cost of uncertainty. How has this industry dealt with this for fifty years or longer? Its finding what that cushion is in sourcing and cheaper and cheaper countries,"Thorbecksaid.

Demand forecasting, from style to quantity, is growing in importance in modern apparel.Retailers like Kohlsand brands like Nike tout their ability to decrease lead timesleading to a more responsive supply chain and more relevant product. But most brands arent prioritizing short lead times over the king of KPIs: cost.

Most mass-market apparel supply chains were built to optimize cost of above all else, according to Thorbeck. These supply chains seem lower risk, since the cost of goods is so low, but they raise the cost of uncertainty since they tend to require larger orders and more lead time.

"What other industry starts with a 65-70% initial margin and ends up at one or two?"

John Thorbeck

Chairman, Chainge Capital

Change how new suppliers are chosen, said Thorbeck, and the inventory burden could lift, resulting in a perhaps more expensive, but certainly more resilient supply chains.

"When production location is considered part of a sourcing strategy, thats a clear indicator that cost of goods sold is the ruling metric and thats how the industry ended up here,"said Thorbeck. "Speed and flexibility more than compensate for the cost of material and cost of location.I dont see enough attention given to process innovation,"said Thorbeck.

Though Thorbeck put the emphasis on lead times and sourcing, theres not one link of the supply chain that is completely to blame for the problem of chronically-elevated inventory. Best practices in nearly every area can help, said Zuccaro.

True omnichannel operations, which are largely intended to meet the customers where they are and therefore garner the maximum sales, require advanced inventory management skills. In many cases when retailers up their fulfillment speed or omnichannel options, investment, either in technology or more inventory, follows. Even Amazon saw increased expense from staging inventory when it shifted Prime shipping speed from two days to one.

Design, lead times, order sizes, tariffs, omnichannel fulfillment, baseline inventory management ..."There are a lot of different things that can go wrong," said Zaccaro and each company is a little different. Many of these potential areas for error lead to stranded inventory and eventually markdowns. But managing them well can also optimize inventory in an era where most fail to do so offering a competitive edge.

Zuccaro said many apparel sellers still need baseline operational investments to bring their supply chains into the omnichannel age and the ability to change, beyond self-awareness and will, stems from a firms financial health running much deeper than cost of goods sold. No new inventory management tech, no shift to a more expensive yet more flexible and responsive supplier is possible without funds available to invest in these areas. Subpar inventory management and wasteful buying doesnt generally spell doom for an apparel dependent company on its own but combine it with a sick balance sheet not strong enough to invest in best practices and even the best intentions wont turn a business around.

Forever 21s collapse didnt come without the potent combination of high inventory and the financial burden of long-term leases, said Jefferies analyst Janine Stichter at the same summit.
