National Online University Candidacy For 42nd Congressional District
John Quincy Adams proposed a national university in 1825. He knew that the United States should lead the world in higher education. With the same goal, I propose a national online university. All at once --and at relatively low cost -- we can make higher education in this country, affordable and available to all. Just think of it: we would have the best of the best: the best faculty, the best instruction, and the best programs in the world. All courses would be free for anyone to audit. Fully accredited 4 year degrees and advanced degrees would also be available with enrollment, open to all. Tuition would be very low, but should at least cover the marginal costs of the "for credit" courses taken. For example, papers will need to be graded, student questions will need to be answered, advisors will need to advise, physical satellite facilities will be needed for proctoring tests and science labs. Students taking classes for credit should cover these costs. A revolution in innovation is currently underway in higher online education. Several universities offer free high quality courses, but those programs do not offer credit, provide very limited feedback to students, and have very low completion rates. Other programs offer credit and feedback to students, but they are expensive and enrollment is not open to all. We have a long history of publicly funding higher education in this nation, a national online university can do it right: the highest quality courses, for credit ...
