Stratford town officials are asking residents to excercise cation when using portable generators. We are asking all residents to use extreme caution while using portable generators. As of 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, there were still 10,447 outages reported in town.

Due to the threat of carbon monoxide poisoning, as well as other potential hazards, do not run generators inside your home. They should be outside and at least 15 feet away from buildings and structures.

Generators should also be kept away from openings such as windows and doors.

Do not back feed any electrical outlets or panels and turn make sure the generator is not running before attempting to refuel it. Do not store or keep fuel containers next to a running generator.

Make sure you have working carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. This Sunday, the clocks will roll back to standard time. A common safety tip is to change smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries twice a year, conveniently at the start of standard and daylight savings time.

To avoid problems when power is restored, be sure to turn off major electric appliances that may have been on when the power went out. This includes electric ovens, ranges and other major appliances.

Last but not least, the town reminds residents to avoid any and all downed electrical wires as there is a chance they are still energized.
