5 Actions to Take Today That Will Move You Toward Success – Beliefnet

The key to being a success tomorrow is being successful with your right now time at hand. You must learn to make the most of your time while you are on the journey to reaching the desired goal or life that you have been dreaming about.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now. Chinese Proverb

Your dream, your vision or your goals wont amount to anything if you dont learn to walk successfully in the time called "now". Having a vision enables you to see what will be and at the same time it should empower you to deal with what is.

Theres an alarming statistic that Sunday afternoons are the most depressing times in America because people have realized that the weekend is coming to a close and that Monday morning they will wake up, get dressed and drive to a job, school, or mundane routine that they have no passion for.

It's an acute condition that is characterized by anxiety about the week ahead and a sense of helplessness and depression. Like a machine on autopilot they will grudgingly perform their duties and tasks anxiously waiting for the day to end, just to go home, go to bed and wake up to do it all over again.

That creates a feeling of hopelessness that will trick you into believing that there is nothing that you can do that will change your situation or make it better. If you buy into that lie, then it will keep you from doing the things that you can begin to do right now that will bring about the change you are looking for.

If thats you, then be encouraged to keep the vision and dream for your life alive and focus on doing those Right Now action steps that will bring about a brighter tomorrow in the days ahead. You can complain and remain the same or do something that can actually bring about a change in your current situation and circumstance.

Here are five right now action steps that can move you closer to the life you are dreaming about.

Its good to have a healthy reality check every now and then so you can see where you are and where you need to go. Its like walking into a mall for the first time and you really dont know where everything is. You may have a particular store that you want to go to, however you have no idea where it is in the mall. Now, you dont just throw your hands up in the air and quit and walk out due to frustration. No, you do what most people would do. You walk up to the giant kiosk and you find the X and the words that say, you are here. Once you find out where you are, it becomes clear to see how to get from where you are to where you need to be.

Snap out of any bad or negative attitude that keeps you from taking advantage of your time wisely. If you are always in a complaining mood, you will never be in a doing mood. People that complain about their current situation, never have time to do anything that can improve it or change it for the better.

You reap what you sow. If you have big dreams that go far beyond your current job, then you should start being the best employee you can be right now and right where you are. Remember, productivity produces promotion. If you are always complaining then you will never gain the lessons that your current job can teach you that will serve as preparation for your future.

A good way to check and see if you are doing this right now action step is to ask yourself a question.

Would I hire me if I were the boss? If your answer is yes, then youre on the right track. If your answer is no, then you still got some work to do. Either way, keep moving forward.

You will never go wrong by helping others achieve their dreams and goals on life. Dont get so tunneled vision on you that you forget those around as well. It pays to help others. One day on your journey to reach your goal, you will need someones help in order to get to the next level. What goes around comes around.

You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.-Zig Ziglar

Oftentimes people are so focused on what they dont have, that they cant clearly see what they do have. Or they compare their lives with the lives of other people who they have deemed to be more successful than them.

Its important that you learn to be thankful for what you already have. If you have a job that you dont like, then imagine your life right now without the paycheck that comes along with it. That should put things into a little bit of perspective for you. The point is, no matter what, you can always find something to be thankful for. You can find a silver lining that will keep you moving forward for time being while you continue to work on the right now action steps that will lead you to the life you really want.

There are many things you can begin to do right now that will forever change your life tomorrow. Quit sitting around complaining about what you dont like and start doing the things that will bring about great change in your life. Think of right now action steps as building blocks that you are using to build the life youve been dreaming about.

It will take time of course, as nothing great happens in one day. Whenever you find yourself getting a little overwhelmed then let that be a signal for you to take a small break and go out and help someone get closer to his or her dream.

Right now is absolutely the right time to start going after your dreams and your goals like never before. Dont waste anymore time complaining about anything, especially when it is in your power and ability to start bringing about a great change.

The tale unleashed in this space this day is difficult to categorize. Some will say it is typical of fake news; others will insist that it best fits somewhere in the dizzy, digital world of social media.

This column reminds me of the line TVs long-running series, Hee Haw, tossed at viewers regularly: I hate to repeat gossip, but dont know what else to do with it.

Im turning a blind eye to names, places and situations, but the story is being shared gleefully by folks who still enjoy jokes. In this piece, I acknowledge that the account is wrapped in the blankets of what might have been. Ive been a member of this what if group since Hector was in puppyhood, half expecting one day to receive a statement asking me to pay past due membership dues if I expect to regain full reinstatement. Okay, so heres the story.

*****

Shes a church-going, self-proclaimed, Bible-believing little old lady who has always attended church services whenever the doors been open. Well call her LOL for short. (She admits that shes several pounds north of little, but unquestionably qualifies for membership in the old category.) LOL frequently jokes that she qualified for senior citizen status when gasoline sold for 75 cents a gallon, and remembers when the Dead Sea was just sick.

She remains a full participant in Sunday school, frequently thrust into organizing socials, including annual Super Bowl get-togethers.

This year, she was still in charge of planning the event, but class members voted to meet in another home, particularly since LOLs husband of some 70 years had passed away several months earlier.

*****

Hubby would have been pleased, she thought, since the class planned to honor his memory as members scarfed down Doritos and other TV foodstuff promoted during THE GAME. Fearing the half-time entertainment might get out of hand, she and other women folk retreated to the kitchen for a scripture memory contest. LOL wanted to make sure that she and other ladies were not subjected to whatever improper halftime programming that likely would include planned wardrobe malfunctions. The men were invited, too, but they failed to join them in retreating to the kitchen. Guys knew their plows would be cleaned in scripture competition, and they didnt want to miss a Super Bowl moment.

The ladies became scripturally engaged, finally returning to the den midway in the fourth quarter.

LOL barely noticed the excitement of the final minutes, intent on savoring her own big win in the scripture scuffle. She successfully recited Acts 2:38, all 34 words from the King James version, described by class members as the real Bible.

*****

On her way home, she pondered Acts 2:38, and its emphasis on the importance of repentance. Little did she know how much the scripture would help her moments later.

Upon entering her den, she was face-to-face with a burglar who already had raided her jewelry box, its contents rattling around in a pillow case. What to do? With a mighty yell, she screamed, ACTS 2:38!

The holy rant seemed to disarm the looter. He fell to his knees, begging forgiveness and insisting to call the police himself.

*****

Soon, the officers arrived. The burglar was handcuffed, ready to go to the hoosecow. (Before you ask, I did have to resort to the dictionary for spelling assistance, and to make sure the term means jail.)

As they departed, an officer asked the culprit why he surrendered so willingly. The heist could have worked if Id arrived earlier and if my hearing had been better, the burglar moaned. When she screamed Acts: 2:38, I thought she said she had an axe and two .38s. I knew I didnt have a chance against such weapons.

Master storyteller Zig Ziglar loved this yarn, including it in many speeches. Its said that he usually started laughing before he could get the punch line out.

How To Pinpoint The Best Time To Make Big Investments In Your Staff – Forbes

Posted: at 2:45 am

without comments

Business professionals having meeting in modern workspace.

Zig Ziglar was once quoted as saying, You dont build a business you build people and then people build the business. Despite the ego that a lot of founders carry into their businesses, thats absolutely true.

When you put your people first by investing in them, youre able to increase employee satisfaction, morale, and productivity. In turn, that will drastically boost your bottom line, reduce turnover, and improve your brands reputation which may just help attract top talent in the future.

Simply put, its a win-win for both you and your people. But how do you know when its the right time to make an investment?

Employee engagement is less than desired.

According to Gallups State of the Global Workforce report, 13% of employees are engaged in their jobs, while 63% are not engaged and 24% are actively disengaged across 142 different countries. That doesnt exactly mean that engagement is an issue among your team. To know for certain, be on the lookout for signs of employee disengagement like absenteeism, a decline in work quality, a change in behavior, withdrawal, or a high turnover rate.

But any issue you notice begs another question: What investment should you make?

The most obvious choice is providing your teammates with professional development opportunities so they can excel in their current positions. Additionally, these new skills and insights can help them stay relevant in their field, as well as take on new projects. In fact, Bonusly's 2019 Engagement and Modern Workplace Report noted that 91% of Highly Engaged employees are satisfied with their professional development opportunities compared to only 28% of Actively Disengaged employees.

Other investments you may want to consider making to improve engagement could be coaching leadership, offering constructive feedback, recognizing employees contributions, and allowing for flexible work arrangements.

Change is on the horizon.

Change, as John Maxwell would say, is inevitable. This is definitely true if you want your business to edge out your competitors, adapt to changing consumer tastes, and thrive financially.

Change is most common when introducing a new product or service that requires your team to learn a new skill, venture into a new market, or meet new compliance requirements. Another instance is when your company has implemented a new strategy, changed an operation or process, or pivoted completely.

Again, what investment should you make?

Providing teammates with the proper training so theyre able to successfully adapt to the change is essential. If the change requires new tools or equipment, make sure your people have these items at their disposal. You should also invest in creating FAQ pages, Wikis, or instructional videos so your team can easily access them if they have questions. This saves you time while giving them the support they need.

But the best investment you can make here is transparency. Dont leave your people in the dark. Let them know whats going on and what they should expect moving forward.

Your team struggles with time management.

From personal experience across multiple companies, this is one of the most common struggles teams face. But its hardly discussed the assumption seems to be that knowledgeable people know how to be efficient. The truth is that we all have competing demands and when your teammates can manage their time more effectively, theyll be more productive, healthier, and happier.

The most common signs that a team member has a time management problem is that hes constantly missing deadlines, arriving late to work or meetings, seeming to never leave the office, and not living up to his full potential.

What investment should you make here?

Ive been a fan of personal time investment for years. That simply means prioritizing time with every one of your team members so you can ensure theyre working on the right goals, prioritizing their lists correctly, and not taking on more assignments than they can handle. Furthermore, you may want to evaluate just how effective your meetings are are you discussing the issues that plague their everyday work, or are you just discussing the big picture?

Most importantly, invest in your teammates health and well-being. After all, if theyre stressed and facing burnout, how can they possibly be focused and energetic at work? Contemplate offering generous PTO, employee wellness programs, and healthy snacks. Each of these things can boost productivity when people have hit a wall.

Employees have become too complacent.

Obviously, you want your people to be comfortable, but you dont want them to grow complacent. Its not only costly, but it also shows that your team no longer wants to learn, grow, or achieve greatness both personally and in the interests of your business.

What are the signs of an employee whos gotten too comfortable? The most glaring is a tendency to only do the bare minimum. He doesnt come in early, stay late, or go the extra mile. More red flags would be when an employee is no longer interested in new opportunities, isnt questioning or contributing to ideas, or has an automatic reply that sounds similar to Sorry, thats not possible.

In a tricky situation like this, what investment should you make?

You could again provide professional development opportunities and offer flexible work arrangements. This would also be a perfect time to schedule a one-on-one sit-down with the person to get to the root of the problem.

Another way to address this issue? Help him get out of his comfort zone. Assign him a new and challenging assignment. Empower him by having him take control of a project or meeting, like attending a conference and sharing the key takeaways with the rest of your people.

Theres a skill gap that needs to be filled.

Sometimes when a business is growing faster than expected, you need your existing team members to wear multiple hats until you have the resources to hire the right people for the job. Other times, your business may have changed direction, meaning your people have to learn a new skill if they want to remain a member of your team.

What investment should you make when skill sets need to pivot?

As always, you cant go wrong with professional development opportunities. This could include in-house training, online courses, mentoring programs, or having your people attend workshops and industry events. The key here is to acknowledge that youre asking them to make a big change and showing them that youll give them the resources they need to succeed.

Investing in your employees is the smartest business decision you can make. Often, it involves an actual financial commitment. But there are plenty of other times when investing in your team requires a time commitment on your end.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that you want to make sure your investment is sustainable. Invest in the people you want to grow your company with, and youll see the dividends in both your relationships and your business.

5 Things to Consider When the Going Gets Tough – Thrive Global

Posted: January 13, 2020 at 1:41 pm

without comments

If you find yourself dumbfounded and sitting in front of your garden, then this article might just be for you. It is undeniable we always get that idle, hopeless feeling whenever we face a problem that seems out of our control. And the worst part is, we often ignore help from others and even the remedies that pop into our minds.

As a set of approaches, here are a few things to consider when going through tough times.

Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will, says Zig Ziglar, an American author, and the harbinger of the Zig Ziglar Servant Leadership Award.

The first step to overcoming any difficulty is to avoid negativity around you. For you to overcome a problem or an issue, you would want to have an environment of positivity as negativity can only serve to compound difficulty.

Thinking too much about stressful events can have unwanted impact on your body. You lose your appetite, you dont get enough sleep, and your focus begins to deteriorate. You then feel like you cant go through the day because you are unable to do things you usually do due to a lack of energy.

If youre stressed about something, start by taking a nap. It lowers your blood pressure and relieves stress right after waking up. Beyond that, youll also get to relax your brain and think lighter after a good rest. Doing yoga can also exercise your mind and become an avenue for peace.

Eating the right kind of food and a daily exercise routine can distract you from thinking of otherwise prevalent problematic thoughts. With the right nutrients and efficient flow of oxygen in your body, you will be able to find better ways to cope with these difficulties.

Many of todays youth use alcohol and drugs for more than recreational purposes. Especially in the event of high levels of stress, they tend to use alcohol, drugs, or even both as a means to escape the reality of their situation.

High levels of stress may influence drinking frequency and quantity. This relationship between stress and drinking is even stronger when alternative coping mechanisms and social supports are lacking, says Dr. Steve Bressert, a clinician and a writer for Psych Central.

This situation isnt peculiar to youths alone. In an effort to relieve themselves of unbearable situations, many people turn to alcohol, and ultimately, drugs for an altered state of mind, commonly referred to as feeling high. While the high that alcohol and drugs give can usually last for a while, the physiological damage to the human body is an investment towards long-suffering, and even untimely death.

To make matters even worse, when you get back down to earth after the effects of the taken substances wear off, youll only discover that the problems you sought to escape are exactly where you left them and nothing has changed. Nothing but the problems your bout of substance abuse may have caused. Says Michael Dadashi, CEO of Infinite Recovery, a San Antonio drug rehab center.

Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit at home and think about it. Go out and get busy, says Dale Carnegie, an American writer focused on corporate training and developing interpersonal skills.

Make plans for a change of environment. If you dont have work to do on the weekends, plan for an exciting trip, its therapeutic. Go to places that you havent been to, preferably exciting locations outside your state or country. Engage with new people, different cultures, food, and everything else in between.

World-renowned scientist Albert Einstein said, A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new. Keep this in mind the next time youre feeling defeated after a series of failures. Youre not a loser, you were simply brave enough to try something new.

Take some time to try other simpler things youve never done before like painting, trekking, or learning a new instrument. These do not just keep you occupied, they also help exercise your brain and give you the mindset to forge ahead.

Don’t Set New Year’s Resolutions, Do This Instead! – Thrive Global

Posted: at 1:41 pm

without comments

Some studies estimate that 90% of all New Years Resolutions fail within the first two weeks of the New Year.

The message?

New Years Resolutions dont work.

You know what does?

Goal-setting. Rewarding yourself for achieving small (and big) goals. Creating a new desired habit to replace a habit youre trying to get rid of.

Ive personally interviewed over 5,000 influencers, including everyone from Jack Canfield to Les Brown to Lisa Nichols to Bob Proctor to JJ Virgin to the late Zig Ziglar. One thing I have discovered is that most influencers dont set resolutions. For a reason.

The takeaway?

So, dont set New Years Resolutions.

Instead, write your goals (including habits you want to create, things you want to resolve to start or stop), and decide on the rewards you will give yourself to carry you through until your new actions become a true habit.

Oh, and dont wait until New Years Day to start. Do it instead on any other day of the year. And dont wait until the first of the month or the first of the week.

Start now, or start 10 minutes from now.

This is why. When you start on the first day of the year, or week or month, you are building up way too much anticipation and pressure around this. You are making it a THING.

Its okay to start on Tuesday at 9:30am, or Saturday at 7pm. Just start. Thats the most important thing.

Also, its okay if you have a set-back. Its okay if you mess up while trying to eat healthy. Its okay if you miss an exercise day.

Its more important that you get back on the horse after falling than that you stay on the horse perfectly forever.

Hopefully youre seeing a trend here?

What Im saying is to do what has enjoyed more success. New Years Resolutions are typically failed from the start.

I mean, trying to eat healthy the day after partying until after midnight? Good luck.

What has a better track record? Well, anything else really.

But lets focus on what Ive shared here as this has a much better track record than New Years Resolutions.

1. Set (written) big and small goals.

2. Decide on the rewards you will give yourself when you achieve each goal. This is super important when you get near the stage where most people quit (before it becomes a true habit)

3. Push yourself past the point where it becomes a habit by delivering on the rewards you have decided upon. Little known fact, it isnt 21 days to create a habit its 66. Source: The One Thing. So make sure you have rewards in place to keep you moving forward for more than a couple of months, not just a few weeks.

4. Dont worry about starting at a certain time or on a certain day.

5. Be okay when you have a set back. The long game is way more important than the short game, but many people use the small mis-step as a reason to give up. Dont be most people.

6. Celebrate

Matney: Hope and faith in the new year – Vail Daily News

Posted: at 1:41 pm

without comments

Happy New Year! I love saying that because it rings with the hope and promise of good things to come. I believe we can expect many blessings in the new year. Yet, many times we ask, Where did last year go?

For many years, I have kept a journal in which I keep a record of phone calls, correspondence, visitation, appointments, hours involved and other information related to work and ministry. I also record many blessings that come my way through family, friends and other sources. My journals are a record of where my year went and a reminder of Gods many blessings. I highly recommend keeping a journal of your journey through life. God required this of Moses and the Israelites.

In Numbers 33:2 it is written, At the Lords command, Moses recorded the stages in their journey. This is their journey by stages

Numbers 33 goes on to record 40-some places the Israelites camped on their journey to the promised land. It would be good if we also slowed down enough to review our journey. If we will, well discover the year has been full of Gods goodness.

Psalm 65:11 states: You crown the year with Your goodness, And Your paths drip with abundance.

This past year has brought abundant blessings into our lives. Regular reviews of Gods goodness will add to the joys of living. Let us frequently reflect on our journey and give God thanks for his many specific blessings.

Write your blessing on a calendar or in a journal and review them daily. Talk about them when you sit at the table and when you tuck the kids in at night. Once again Ill go over what God has done, lay out on the table the ancient wonders; Ill ponder all the things youve accomplished, and give a long, loving look at your acts, it says in Psalm 77:11-12. If we will review our journey daily, weekly and monthly, well see Gods many blessings, and have faith for the new year ahead.

One of the biggest reasons peoples faith is weak, or they lose their faith altogether, is because they fail to remember the good things God had done. The year past has brought blessings we should remember, and the new year will bring blessings also.

So, what does the new year hold? What do you want to accomplish? Have you made any New Years resolutions or set any goals?

I used to be against goal-setting because it seemed to be too self-centered and self-serving. However, I begin to realize godly goal-setting isnt just about what I want to do, but what I believe God wants to accomplish. As Zig Ziglar has said, Goals are fundamentally statements of faith faith in what God wants to achieve through you. And I learned a new acrostic for the word Goals from John Maxwell.

G.O.A.L.S.: Godly Objectives Assure Lasting Success.

So, what godly objectives and lasting success does God want for you? What do you believe God wants to accomplish in you, through you and for you in this New Year? What promise does he want you to possess, what godly character does he want you to develop, and what good things will he help you do for others? The apostle Paul summarized his goals this way in Philippians 3:10-14:

I want to know Christ yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Coming to know the creator better through the example and teachings of Jesus is a supremely worthy goal. It deserves to be at the top of our list. Read the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John throughout 2020 to get to know Jesus better. Dont dwell on past failures. Press ahead toward what God has created you for. It will bring the greatest joy to your life.

At the beginning of 2020, lets pause and review the past year, paying special attention to the blessings, and then let us look forward to the new year with hope and faith. And as we go forward in our journey, let us gratefully record, review and retell the many good things we experience. I need to do a better job of this myself. I hope youll join me.

Happy New Year and blessings to all!

Its important to understand that the amount of time you spend at work versus on the personal side will ebb and flow depending on the stage of lifeyou are in and you must communicate your expectations and changes as they arise. Time is precious, and when you are with your friends and family its important to be fully present. One trick I employ is after my 30-minute commute home: I park in the garage and do one last look at my email and voicemail and respond to any critical items while still in the garage. Whilethis gives us control of our own time and space, it often leads to what I callwork bleed; when our businesses bleed too deeply into our personal lives.
