Does yoga reduce the risk of falls in older people? – The BMJ

Exercise programmes that involve balance and functional exercises are effective at preventing falls in older people living in the community

Yoga provides small to moderate improvement in balance and mobility in this population, but there is lack of evidence on effect of yoga on falls

Health professionals can recommend yoga to older people to promote physical function and mental wellbeing if there are no clinical contraindications, but there is currently insufficient evidence to recommend yoga specifically for preventing falls

Nearly a third of people aged over 65 years and over half of people older than 80 have a fall at least once a year.123 Falls and fall related injuries can be life changing and may result in chronic disability, admission to assisted living, or death. A fall can also precipitate a fear of falling, which may lead to restriction of activity and hence physical deconditioning. This in turn increases the risk of future falls.45

Clinical guidelines from several countries recommend multifactorial interventions for preventing falls in older people, with exercise as a key component.367 A recent Cochrane review (108 randomised controlled trials, 23407 participants) concluded there is strong evidence that well designed exercise programmes reduce the number of falls by about a quarter among older people living in the community.8 Such programmes also reduce the number of people experiencing one or more falls. Exercise that mainly involved balance and functional training reduced falls.

Yoga is a mind-body practice that typically involves a combination of physical postures, breathing exercises, and concentration/meditation. Yoga has become a popular means of promoting physical and mental wellbeing9 and is shown to improve health related quality of life in older people.10 Evidence from observational studies suggests it is an acceptable and attractive form of exercise

How yoga helps to ease the symptoms of depression? – PINKVILLA

Posted: at 7:56 pm

without comments

Yoga has several mental and health benefits and one of the most important ones is its impact on the symptoms of depression. Yoga relaxes our mind and improves mood. So, heres how it reduces the effects of depression.

We are well-versed with the health benefits of yoga. Now, several studies have shown that its highly beneficial for depression also. Yoga therapy is often used to reduce stress and anxiety and improve mood to relax our mind. Practising different yoga poses helps to soothe our mind like meditation.

Depression is a prolonged state of sadness and low mood that consists of lack of concentration, appetite problems and sleep issues. People dealing with depression have feelings of dejection, hopelessness and suicidal thoughts sometimes.

Heres how yoga can help to deal with depression:

Yoga therapy and depression

According to doctors, yoga therapy is highly beneficial for depression. But if you cant do yoga, then meditation with physical movement will also provide the same effects. So, these are the benefits of yoga on the treatment of depression:

Improving mood and providing relaxation

Yoga helps to release serotonin, a happy hormone. Serotonin plays a major role in the treatment of depression and makes us feel happy. It has been seen that people dealing with depression have a very lower level of serotonin. So, yoga is good to rise up the level.

On the other hand, yoga has a calming effect and a positive vibe on our mind. So, it is good for relaxation and for reducing stress and anxiety.

Yoga also increases heart rate variability (HRV) by providing relaxation. A high HRV means our body is self-monitoring to stress. Yoga postures can also:

1. Lower blood pressure.

2. Ease breathing.

3. Increase pain tolerance.

Important yoga poses to reduce depression

These are some of the yoga poses that have positive impact to alleviate mood and combat depression:

1.Urdhva Hastasana in Tadasana.

2.Adho Mukha Svanasana.

3.Viparita Dandasana.

4.Sarvangasana.

5.Setu bandhaSarvangasana.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon vs ThinkPad X1 Yoga: Which business laptop is best? – Laptop Mag

Posted: at 7:56 pm

without comments

If you want the best portable business laptop, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon and ThinkPad X1 Yoga should top your list. But which of these Lenovo laptops is right for you? The two slim notebooks are similar in many ways but a few important differences separate the clamshell laptop from its convertible relative.

Before we get into that, let's talk about why you should go with one of these ThinkPads. For one, they're both very portable, coming in at or under 3 pounds and 0.6 inches thick. They have great 1080p and 4K display options, and their 10th Gen Intel U-series CPUs deliver reliable performance. There are plenty of security features to protect your sensitive files and the laptops' military-tested chassis can withstand a beating.

There really isn't much we don't like about these laptops. But no siblings are exactly the same the X1 Yoga and X1 Carbon each have their own pros and cons. We'll run through the differences between these notebooks to help you determine which one is best for you.

These are some expensive business notebooks and get even pricier when you opt for a vPro CPU.

The X1 Carbon has a pricing edge on the Yoga with the base model selling for $1,331. It comes with a 1080p display, an Intel Core i5-10210U CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. An X1 Yoga with the same specs goes for $1,439.

Today's best Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 8) deals

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon...

From there, you can customize each laptop to your needs. I reviewed two configs of both laptops. The cheaper X1 Carbon I reviewed costs $1,745 and has a 14-inch, 1080p display, an Intel Core i5-10310U ( with vPro) CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and a few optional upgrades (IR camera, Windows 10 Pro).

Our 4K model with a Core i7-10610U ( with vPro) CPU, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD costs $2,322. It's one of the most expensive options, only cheaper than the 1TB config, which costs an extra $268.

Today's best Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga (Gen 5) deals

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga (Gen...

Our less expensive ThinkPad X1 Yoga unit goes for $1,670 and comes with an Intel Core i5-10310U CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and a 1080p display. The pricier version we tested costs a wallet-busting $2,106 and is equipped with a Core i7-10610U CPU (with vPro), 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and a 4K panel.

Winner: ThinkPad X1 Carbon

Take a picture: it's a ThinkPad face-off with two distinct-looking laptops! Lenovo mixed things up last year when the X1 Yoga ditched the carbon fiber for aluminum.

The Slate Gray metal chassis looks great, but I prefer the soft-touch carbon fiber on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon; the smooth matte-black surface adds a touch of luxury and feels nice on your wrists when you're typing.

One objective advantage for the Yoga is its flexible 2-in-1 form factor; you can flip the X1 Yoga's display back and turn the laptop into a tablet or position it in tent mode.

Apart from the materials and form factors, the ThinkPad X1 Yoga and ThinkPad X1 Carbon have similar designs. They flaunt everything you'd expect from a ThinkPad: discrete touchpad buttons with red trim, a red pointing stick, and the red-illuminated "i" on the lid.

Both laptops are tested to military-grade durability and offer plenty of security features, including a webcam cover, a fingerprint sensor and facial recognition via Windows Hello.

Lenovo had to use heavier components to get the X1 Yoga to flip around. As a result, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon is the more portable laptop at 2.4 pounds compared to the 3-pound ThinkPad X1 Yoga

Winner: ThinkPad X1 Carbon

The X1 Yoga and X1 Carbon have the same ports and the selection is pretty good. My only gripe is the lack of an SD card, which Lenovo removed in the previous models.

On the left side of these laptops are two Thunderbolt 3 ports, a USB 3.2 Type-A input, an HDMI 1.4, a network extension for Ethernet and docking, and a headphone/mic jack. On the right side are a second USB 3.2 Type-A port and a Kensington lock.

Winner: Draw

Among the many similarities between those two laptops are the display options. We tested two of the three available displays, a 1080p screen and a 4K panel (the third option is a 1440p panel).

The two laptops seem to use the same displays based on my side-by-side comparison and our benchmark tests. Whichever one you choose, expect a sharp picture with vivid colors and a screen that's bright enough to use outdoors.

According to our colorimeter, the 1080p panels on the ThinkPad X1 Yoga and ThinkPad X1 Carbon cover nearly the same range on the sRGB color gamut, at 102% and 101%, respectively. The 4K screens are more vivid at 133% for the X1 Yoga and 135% for the X1 Carbon. The small differences in these scores are insignificant.

When it comes to brightness, the 1080p panel on the ThinkPad X1 Yoga gets up to 404 nits whereas the X1 Carbon's FHD screen reached 368 nits. At 488 nits, the Yoga's 4K option beams with about the same intensity as the 4K panel on the X1 Carbon (498 nits).

Winner: Draw

"Um, these are the same keyboards," my wife said when I asked her to confirm my suspicions. That's great news because we both really like the ways these keys feel. There is a strong tactile click that you won't get on other ultrathin laptops and the keys do all the work, bouncing your fingers from one letter to the next.

The key layouts are also the same, which is good and bad. My fruitless campaign to get Lenovo to swap the Fn and Ctrl keys to their normal position continues. I've gotten used to this layout from reviewing ThinkPads over the years, but I prefer Ctrl as the bottom-left-most key so I can instinctively execute shortcuts (like ctrl + c for copy).

I have no other qualms about the placement of the keys the arrow keys are easy to find and there are useful mute and accept/deny call shortcuts for video conferencing.

These two systems use the same 4 x 2.3-inch touchpad. It's responsive but too small for those with mozzarella stick fingers like myself. Some people buy ThinkPads for the little rubber nub sandwiched in the keyboard; this pointing stick, found on both models, is useful if you want to keep your fingers on the home row while controlling the cursor and discrete left/right-click buttons.

The biggest advantage the X1 Yoga has over the X1 Carbon is its flexible design. As a 2-in-1, the X1 Yoga can convert into a tablet when you need to present content or use touch navigation. And instead of making you tap your oily fingers on the screen, the X1 Yoga comes with a stylus housed within a slot on the right edge of the laptop. It's a super convenient feature although the stylus itself is thin and uncomfortable to hold if you have large hands.

Winner: ThinkPad X1 Yoga

You won't notice much of a performance gap between these laptops as they employ similar components, including 10th Gen Intel Comet Lake CPUs and up to 16GB of RAM. It's no wonder they traded punches in our benchmarking tests.

Before we get into those, let's look at the specs. Again, we reviewed two versions of the X1 Yoga and X1 Carbon: one with a Core i5-10310U CPU with vPro and another with a Core i7-10610U CPU with vPro. Keep in mind, both X1 Yoga models came with 16GB of RAM, but the Core i5 X1 Carbon had only 8GB, so it's not a perfect apples-to-apples comparison.

On the Geekbench 5 overall performance test, the Core i7 ThinkPad X1 Carbon scored a 3,939, just edging out the equivalent ThinkPad X1 Yoga (3,878). Similarly, when looking at the Core i5 models, the X1 Carbon (3,597) beat the X1 Yoga (3,567) by a hair despite having less memory.

These two stealthy business notebooks were neck-and-neck in our real-world video transcoding test, which asks them to convert a 4K clip to 1080p using the Handbrake app. Starting with the Core i7 models, the ThinkPad X1 Yoga needed 19 minutes and 22 seconds whereas the ThinkPad X1 Carbon needed 18:29.

The X1 Carbon had the edge when we compared the Core i5 models, completing the task in 19 minutes and 51 seconds, whereas the ThinkPad X1 Yoga finished after 20:28.

A quick look in the Device Manager shows the same Samsung SSD in the ThinkPad X1 Carbon and ThinkPad X1 Yoga, which explains why our file transfer test ended in a virtual tie. It took 53 seconds for the 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD in the ThinkPad X1 Yoga to duplicate a 25GB multimedia file, equating to a transfer rate of 503.7 megabytes per second. The X1 Carbon with a 256GB SSD took 5 seconds longer for a rate of 462.9 MBps. The 512GB PCIe NVMe drives in both our pricier systems took 26 seconds at a blistering rate of 1,044.7 MBps.

With Intel UHD graphics, the X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga struggle to run any graphics-intensive tasks, whether that be gaming or heavy video editing. All four systems the Core i5 and Core i7 versions of the X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga ran Dirt 3 at around 30 frames per second, toeing the line of our minimum playability threshold.

Winner: Draw

This is another close round but the ThinkPad X1 Yoga finally gets its first win. With a runtime of 11 hours and 30 minutes on our battery test (continuous web browsing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits), the 1080p X1 Yoga narrowly outlasted the X1 Carbon (10:45). Those, I should mention, are both excellent results.

Even the 4K models put up some respectable runtimes, although they stopped short of our preferred 8-hour mark. The X1 Yoga endured for 7 hours and 28 minutes while the X1 Carbon fell a song short, at 7:23.

Winner: ThinkPad X1 Yoga

The X1 Carbon outscored its flexible twin by the narrowest of margins. It's incredible how similar these two laptops are, but the X1 Carbon got the win for having a lighter chassis and a lower starting price than the X1 Yoga.

But just because the ThinkPad X1 Carbon scored a point higher in this face-off doesn't mean it's the best option for you. If you want to use your laptop in tablet mode or with a stylus, the X1 Yoga is the best 2-in-1 business laptop and the obvious choice between these two.

Which would I buy? I'm fine with a traditional clamshell laptop so I'd go with the ThinkPad X1 Carbon. It is considerably lighter than the X1 Yoga and I prefer the matte finish over the aluminum on the Yoga. That said, I'd be happy with either as they are both top business laptops with very few shortcomings.

Starting off Friday on a positive and healthy note, Kangana Ranaut shared a picture of herself practising yoga in the outdoors amidst lush greenery.

Ever since Kangana Ranaut made her debut and joined Twitter officially, the actress has been sharing fun photos of herself almost every other morning. Just a few days ago, Kangana posed for the camera in a stunning outfit and shared photos. Today, Kangana took to Twitter to reveal which is her 'most favourite time of the day'. Starting off Friday on a positive and healthy note, Kangana struck a yoga pose.

Taking to Twitter, she shared a picture of herself practising yoga in the outdoors amidst some lush greenery. She captioned it in Hindi saying, "Yoga, the most favorite time of my day, I always say that happiness of the whole world is on one side and the happiness of a healthy body is one side. I wish God blessings on all of us as well as blessings of a healthy body and mind."

Take a look at Kangana Ranaut's post below:

Speaking about Kangana's Twitter presence, the actress took on a battle with many on Thursday as she blocked Farah Khan Ali and Kubbra Sait. Kangana also slammed Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut for his remarks as well as shot back at Renuka Shahane's tweet.

It all started when Sena's Sanjay Raut said that if Kangana is sacred of Mumbai Police she shouldn't come back to Mumbai. Hitting back to Raut, Kangana said, "Sanjay Raut Shiv Sena leader has given me an open threat and asked me not to come back to Mumbai, after Aazadi graffitis in Mumbai streets and now open threats, why Mumbai is feeling like Pakistan occupied Kashmir?"

Renuka then criticised Kangana for calling Mumbai as PoK. "Dear @KanganaTeam Mumbai is the city where your dream of becoming a Bollywood star has been fulfilled, one would expect you to have some respect for this wonderful city. It's appalling how you compared Mumbai with POK!"

Yoga on the riverfront returns – Wilkes Barre Times-Leader

July 05, 2020

EDWARDSVILLE It was good to be together again.

A group of friends gathered in one backyard Sunday and had a cookout

Social distancing was practiced. People wore masks.

But we all knew each other.

We had great food and great conversation. We laughed, we joked, we caught up with each other.

This is a group not unlike many that held similar gatherings over the July 4th weekend. These are gatherings born of lifelong friendships and family.

These sort of events have been a part of the fabric of America for generations. I fondly recall my parents taking me to these type events where people brought food, had a few adult beverages, played cards, laughed and enjoyed celebrating Americas birthday.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live. We all crave for that return to normalcy that we cherished for all our lives.

And its been a difficult pandemic to say the least. The contagion level of the coronavirus is higher than any before. People can be exposed, not realize they are carrying it and transmit it to others, many who are extremely susceptible to the effects of COVID-19.

So we must be cognizant of this when we venture out in public. We may feel we are invincible, but we are not. And I have witnessed the effort being put forth by most.

So when we gather, we protect ourselves from the virus and we protect our friends and family.

And thats really what friendship and family are all about.

Even with our masks on and social distancing, we still got to see each other, talk to each other and enjoy each other.

And on this July 4th weekend, there were more fireworks emanating from backyards that I have ever seen before. With apologies to all the pets out there, the fireworks were an expression of celebration of gatherings that people not only wanted, but really needed.

I truly believe that this pandemic will pass and a vaccine/cure will be found. Its just that we dont know when that day will come. So until it does arrive, we must remain diligent in practicing those mitigation tools we have been taught.

This group of ours is a vibrant group. We enjoy doing things together. One of our favorites is the annual dance at Irem Temple pavilion with Joe Nardone & the All Stars and Eddie Day and the Starfires. Sadly, this event that annually attract 700-plus, may not be held.

I will also miss the annual Plymouth Alive Kielbasa Festival that provides so much fun and renewal each year. And Plymouth Alive raises money that is put back into the community.

Same with other events like the Edwardsville Pierogi Festival, not to forget all those bazaars of churches and fire companies.

It will all return, we just dont know when.

And we will again celebrate together have fun again together.

But one thing Sundays gathering at our friend Deidre and Franks home proved one thing remains crystal clear.

No pandemic can ever change the love we all have for each other.

Good food, good friends, good conversation, great fireworks, great time.

That will always be with us all.

Jason Carr bought a small corner lot on Catlin Avenue in Wilkes-Barre in 2016 because it was only $500 and adjacent to a single-family residential structure he already owned.

The 0.17-acre lot, which Carr said is too small to house a building, was available cheap because it had been abandoned by the prior owner and wasnt sold in popular Luzerne County back-tax auctions. The county typically has about 1,000 of these repository properties up for grabs, and taxing bodies are eager to unload them.

Assuming he was stuck with the countys $10,000 real estate tax assessment on the lot, Carr said he almost fell off the chair at a county government meeting earlier this year when officials discussed a state law covering repository property assessments.

This statute says the purchase price of repository properties shall be deemed to be the fair market value of the property for tax assessment purposes.

Carr argued this means the county should have automatically reduced the assessed value to the price paid in his case $500.

Instead, the county has required property owners to file assessment appeals to receive a reduction. The county also set the minimum repository assessment at $1,000 as part of the countywide reassessment that took effect in 2009.

County lawyers continue to vehemently maintain the county is in compliance with the law because the statute refers to fair market value instead of expressly stating the purchase price must become the assessed value.

Fair market value does not necessarily equal the appropriate tax assessment, which is why an appeal is required, the county administration says.

Nevertheless, the county administration has decided assessors office procedures would be simplified if the assessment change is automatic. Starting Sept. 1, the repository purchase price will be the assessed value, county Manager C. David Pedri recently announced.

Carr questioned if this new directive will be applied retroactively.

The administration said it will not, which leaves a legal challenge as the only recourse for purchases before that date.

Convinced the Sept. 1 change is what the county should have been doing all along, Carr said he is exploring legal options and has contacted government investigatory agencies attempting to force officials to lower his assessment to $500 dating back to the 2016 purchase.

A Saylorsburg resident who owns multiple rental properties in the county, Carr said its a bigger issue than his own purchase because he has identified many other vacant lots purchased from the repository that still contain the original assessments.

Carr also believes the county should have informed property owners of its requirement to file assessment appeals to qualify for the reduction, particularly because hes found at least 18 other counties that have been making the assessment change automatically.

Repository buyers are helping taxing bodies by taking ownership of properties that had been deserted and maintaining them, Carr said.

The repository assessment issue has come up before.

In 2017, New York resident Alex Zbinovsky said he cant proceed with plans to fix up a former Wilkes-Barre factory he bought for $500 from the repository in 2013 until the assessment issue is addressed.

The assessment on the 43,000-square-foot brick property at 447 New Grove St. is $225,000.

His attorney, William Vinsko, said last week that litigation is still pending on the matter. Vinsko has long argued the county should have automatically lowered the assessment to the repository purchase price and said he still holds that position.

The county assessment appeals board had issued a ruling in April 2013 keeping the New Grove property assessment at $673,100. The board reduced the value to $225,000 in September 2014 but declined a further reduction, records show.

Most properties that land in the repository are rundown structures, land slivers or large undeveloped parcels with access problems or other hurdles, officials have said. The properties can be purchased at any time, and a list of those available is updated regularly and posted at http://www.luzernecountytaxclaim.com.

In a separate issue related to these properties, councils real estate committee also is recommending repository purchases be increased from $500 to $1,000 if a parcel contains a structure, with land-only properties remaining at $500. Council is set to vote on the proposed purchase price change this month.

Luzerne Countys administration recently started collective bargaining negotiations with the detective union, which is operating under a contract that expires the end of this year, said county Administrative Services Division Head David Parsnik.

Only one expired county union contract is still outstanding with the assistant district attorneys/public defenders, Parsnik said.

Binding arbitration became necessary with those workers because both sides reached an impasse negotiating a new contract to replace one that expired the end of 2018, officials have said.

Parsnik said he has no idea when the arbitrators decision will be completed and released to the county.

Courthouse eatery

The Center City Cafs recent opening in the county courthouse basement cafeteria has been a phenomenal success, said county Manager C. David Pedri.

Workers and visitors at the courthouse on River Street in Wilkes-Barre can dine in, with social distancing enforced, or pick up their orders, Pedri said.

He recently enjoyed a salad there and said the prices are reasonable.

The food is delicious. The people love it, Pedri said.

Council approved the lease to business owner YonKondy Enterprises LLC in March. The business will pay monthly rent of $500 for the first half of the five-year contract and $525 for the second half.

Wedding rental

After cancellations due to the coronavirus pandemic, the county has booked its first courthouse wedding in months a small ceremony on July 11, Pedri said.

Information on holding weddings at the facility is posted on the building/grounds department section at http://www.luzernecounty.org.

Tax sale

Luzerne Countys popular main Aug. 13 free-and-clear delinquent tax auction has been postponed to Nov. 5, according to Sean Shamany, a representative of county tax-claim operator Elite Revenue Solutions LLC.

This final-stage sale typically draws crowds because liens and back taxes are no longer attached.

Shamany said the rescheduling does not stem from coronavirus-related limitations on large gatherings because Elite could space people apart and limit attendees to registered bidders with no spectators. County tax sales are held at the Kings College auxiliary gym on North Main Street in Wilkes-Barre.

Instead, Shamany said the concern is fitting in all required court hearings tied to the auction while judges work to catch up on cases backlogged because of the pandemic.

There are no plans at this time to delay the Sept. 24 upset sale, which is a first stage auction, Shamany said.

Write-in votes

Luzerne County primary election voters can get a glimpse of why it took the county Election Board days to count write-in votes.

The final June 2 election results, posted on the main page at luzernecounty.org, now include the extensive list of nominees voters wrote down instead of selecting contenders on the ballot.

On both the Republican and Democratic sides in the presidential race, for example, numerous other names were entered. Among the unsuccessful nominees were docuseries tiger owner Joe Exotic, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Elon Musk and Bishop Joseph Bambera.

In all seriousness, names entered in jest slow up the processing of votes, particularly with the increase in mail-in ballots requiring the Election Board to decipher handwriting instead of reading letters typed on an electronic voting machine.

Each new write-in name also had to be manually entered into the voting results system during the review process.

Luzerne and Lackawanna counties are working with a consultant to develop a regional blueprint for transportation, land preservation and development and other issues facing their communities for years to come.

Recommended every decade, the last comprehensive bi-county plan was released in 2012.

JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) -- Yoga Body Shop in Johnson City reopened its doors Saturday.

Owner Linda Sambursky said the studio was approved to open through the Department of Labor, as yoga instruction falls under phase three.

Like many local businesses, Yoga Body Shop has been closed since mid-March.

"It was scary," said Sambursky. "Not knowing if you could pay your bills, not knowing if your members were going to stick with you, not knowing if they were going to come back. It was just really scary."

Sambursky says they found out they could reopen for in-person classes, just one day before the reopening.

"We had everything ready. We were ready to go," says Sambursky.

A number of changes have been made to keep clients and staff safe. Clients receive a temperature check upon entering, and must be below 98.6. Everyone must wear a mask, until settled on their mat.

There is no physical interaction between instructors and clients, and classes have been significantly reduced. The main room has a maximum capacity of 75 people, but is now cut down to 24.

Yoga Body Shop offered virtual classes throughout the pandemic, and the virtual option is still available for clients who don't feel comfortable coming to the studio just yet.

While being closed was challenging, Sambursky says she's thankful for the ability to teach classes in-person, once again.

"Everything has a purpose and things are starting to slowly open and we're very grateful to open, and continue supporting the community."
