This 81-year-old self-help book is still the best – New York Post

At first, Dale Carnegie was not interested in writing a book about leadership.

According to Peter Schwed in the publishing history Turning the Pages, the erstwhile Missouri farm boy saw no reason to give away in a $2 book what he was successfully selling to thousands of people as a $75 lecture course, his 14-week series at the Dale Carnegie Institute of Effective Speaking and Human Relations. Simon & Schuster executive Leon Shimkin had attended the series and had been so impressed, he broached the idea of a book with Carnegie. Eventually, Shimkin prevailed, convincing him to write it.

How to Win Friends and Influence People was first published in October 1936 and would go on to become one of the first best-selling self-help books ever, selling more than 30 million copies. Its quoted on Twitter and shows up constantly in interviews with business titans (a 15-year-old Warren Buffet discovered the book on his grandfathers shelf and found that all of the books advice helped his social life in high school, according to biographer Alice Schroeder, who writes about it in The Snowball). The book was even included in a 2016 Library of Congress exhibit called America Reads, which celebrated 65 books by American authors that had a profound effect on American life.

So why does its popularity endure more than 80 years after its publication?

Nothing in the book is particularly shocking or unconventional; theres no gimmick to it, just really sound advice and a pretty keen understanding of human nature A persons name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language, writes Carnegie, who changed his name from its original spelling, Carnagey, to encourage association with the (unrelated) Gilded Age Carnegie family.

Other tidbits include avoiding criticizing others Criticisms are like homing pigeons. They always return home and on taking a gentle approach even in times of trial, Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain, he writes, And most fools do. But it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving ... Success in dealing with people depends on a sympathetic grasp of the other persons viewpoint.

Eighties self-help guru Louise Hay dies aged 90 – Starts at 60

Posted: at 1:43 pm

You could easily say Louise Hay was the founder of the self-help movement.

An American motivational author and professional speaker, Hay died of natural causes on Wednesday, aged 90.

Her publishing company Hay House released this statement:

Our beloved friend and founder Louise Hay transitioned this morning, August 30, 2017, of natural causes at age 90. She passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Louise was an incredible visionary and advocate. Everyone who had the privilege to meet her, either in person, or through her words, felt her passion for serving others.

Meeting Louise changed the direction of my life, said Reid Tracy, President and CEO of Hay House, Inc. Her passion for serving others translated into everything she did. Simply by working alongside her, an analytical accountant like me transformed into someone who became aware of the power of affirmations and self-love. Being able to learn from her has been one of my lifes greatest blessings. The beauty of Louise was that you didnt have to work alongside her to learn from her, you felt like you were there with her, with every word you read or heard.

Even if you dont remember her, youll remember some of her words of inspiration. Her name is attached to many inspirational quotes like Love is never outside ourselves; love is within us, and As I say YES to life, life says YES to me.

Her first publicationHeal Your Body became part of her first book You Can Heal Your Life, published in 1984. She claimed that mind power healed her body of cancer. Around that time she began support groups for people living with HIV and AIDS.

Other titles include 101 Ways To Health and Healing and I think, I am. She appeared on TheOprah Winfrey Show and Donahue in 1988 and her booksthen became best sellers.

Pig + Fig Caf Hosts Fundraiser For Self Help, Inc. – Los Alamos Daily Post

Los Alamos

The Pig + Fig Caf will present a fundraising dinner to benefit Self Help, Inc. at 6 p.m. Sept. 10. Each of the six courses will feature farm to table dishes paired with an array of Rhone varietal wines from Pig + Fig Caf owner Laura Crucets private collection.

Tickets are $95 per person and can be purchased on their Eventbrite Page by clicking here.

Crucet will donate 100 percent of the profits from the dinner to Self Help. The local non-profit offers assistance to meet peoples basic needs. They will help a family pay for groceries, pay a utility bill, prevent an eviction for a family with young children, and provide emergency lodging for homeless people.

I first heard about Self Help when I was working at another restaurant, Crucet said. They helped one of my co-workers get into an apartment.

At the time, Crucets co-worker made $12 an hour as a line cook. He was earning too much to get any help from the state, and yet there was no way he would be able to afford the deposit to get into an apartment. Self Help, Inc. paid the deposit so he could have a place to live.

Now that Crucet owns her own restaurant, she is giving back to the organization that helps so many people. Crucet said she strongly believes that these services are especially important in Los Alamos.

If youre not an employee at the lab its hard to make ends meet here, she said. If you make $40,000 a year, you wont be able to make rent. There is a struggling middle class here.

What does that struggling middle class look like?

Self Help, Inc. is honored to collaborate on fund raising events with Chef Laura at Pig and Fig, Morris-Bond said. Our last event with Chef Laura sold out quickly and received wonderful kudos for the menu and service. We are grateful to have strong community partnerships with a successful small business - Pig and Fig!

The fundraising dinner is at The Pig + Fig restaurant at 35 Rover Blvd. Suite G in White Rock. Order tickets here.

Self Help, Inc. has been providing emergency financial assistance for basic needs such as utility payments, housing costs, groceries and car repairs since 1969. The agency, a United Way Community Partner, also provides seed money to start small businesses/cottage industries in the endeavor to become self-reliant. The website ishttp://www.selfhelpla.org/.

Al Snow releasing new book "Self-Help: Life Lessons from the … – ProWrestling.net

Posted: at 1:43 pm

without comments

The following press release was issued to Prowrestling.net on Tuesday regarding Al Snows forthcoming book.

At the peak of wrestlings popularity, millions worldwide watched Al Snow stride into the ring each Monday night with the words HELP ME scrawled backwards across his forehead. Now, after a 30+ year career working for WWE, ECW, and TNA, hes no longer asking for help hes offering it . . . with his tongue planted firmly in his cheek.

Self-Help: Life Lessons from the Bizarre Wrestling Career of Al Snow will be published by ECW Press in April 2019 and will see Snow, in collaboration with Ross Owen Williams, telling the story of his life, combining the highlights of his career with stories from the road that have given Al pause. Planned chapter titles include How (Not) to Train Dogs, How to Get into Films. . . with the Mob, and How to Transport Naked Little People in a Big People Mover.

Its an honor to be able to share my journey and see it all there on the page, says Snow. What Im particularly excited about is the fact that ECW Press, Ross, and I have all agreed to take a slightly different slant than other wrestling autobiographies. Naturally, we will revisit all the notable moments in my career, but we want the book to cover more than what I did in front of the cameras. There are so many stories from the roadthings that only seem to happen to methat have made me who I am today. Ive always considered every new situation as a potential learning experience and this book will give me the opportunity to share that, for better or for worse.

Als life and career has been fascinating, says Michael Holmes, Executive Editor for ECW Press. His stories will have readers laughing out loud one moment and shaking their head in disbelief the next. Self-Help is going to be a special and important addition to our growing catalogue of wrestling titles.

Co-author Ross Owen Williams agrees. Wrestling fans are going to love this book. Non-wrestling fans are going to love it, too. We want to make sure that its accessible to everybody rather than just those who have followed his career. Even if youve followed Mick Foleys questionable advice and have never watched a single Al Snow match, youll be able to thoroughly enjoy this book.

Williams previously co-wrote Bob Hollys autobiography, The Hardcore Truth, released to universal acclaim in 2013 by ECW press. That book went on to be named best wrestling book of the year by multiple websites and was voted runner-up in the Wrestling Observer annual awards.

Powells POV: This could be a lot of fun. Between Snows time in WWE and ECW, and his work behind the scenes in TNA, and his independent history, Snow has covered a lot of ground. Hes also not afraid to express his opinions. It will be interesting to see if Snow returns fire after being the butt of so many Mick Foley friendly jokes over the years.

Supes look to fill potholes with ‘self-help’ sales tax – Daily Democrat

Posted: at 11:43 pm

without comments

Yolo County has about $120 million in back-logged road maintenance needs, and the proof is in the pavement.

During aboard meeting earlier this month, supervisors made a move toward becoming a self-help county, which could help the county especially rural areas patch up rough roads or build new ones.

But financing the infrastructure work would mean a quarter-cent hike to the existing sales tax.

After a presentation from county legislative affairs specialist, Alex Tengolics, Supervisors opted in that direction, effectively placing the tax measure on either the June or November ballot of 2018.

With a cannabis tax and a preschool entry tax already slated for the June ballot, supervisors Jim Provenza and Don Saylor leaned toward the later date. To pass, the tax measure would require a two-thirds vote from the public; pushing the date back could be the difference between passing and failing, as residents could be hesitant to assume so many tax measures after only one trip to the poll.

Such a hike would fix Woodland and West Sacramento sales tax at 8.25 percent; Davis, 8.5 percent; Winters and unincorporated areas, 7.5 percent.

That increase would raise $8.5 million in funds for the specific purpose of road maintenance, filling the gaps that the states SB-1 transportation funding about $66 million over ten years cannot cover.

Tengolics also highlighted the backlogged needs for incorporated cities, a total projected expense of $387 million. The county has an existing road maintenance budget, but federal and state regulations only allow portions of that money to fund discretionary road projects. Should the self-help tax measure pass, Yolo would be one of 25 counties in line for additional SB-1 road repair funding.

During the meeting Saylor said that point would need to be accentuated, as many would look at the fund and not see the red tape that prevents it from mending roads.

Its an ambitions process, he said. Its going to take a lot of cooperation with folks and that includes all the jurisdictions.

Rural areas have by far the worst roads. Tengolicss report includes a map of the county and the average pavement condition index for areas of the county. Incorporated cities have good or low risk road statuses, but surrounding areas sport a bright red poor rating. Such ratings have taken a downward dive since 2008, when most areas of the county had good or low risk ratings.

As the PCI decreases, the cost of repair increases as well, Tengolics said. This issue is particularly vexing for the unincorporated areas.

The county isnt the only entity thats noticed bumpy roadways. Every tire, suspension system and rear end in the area has felt the effects.

In fact, an Instagram account titled Potholes of Yolo County regularly posts photos of the more egregious road hazards. The account is hosted by local cyclists, who truly feel the wrath of damaged roads. The bio reads: Celebrating the road hazards that keep cyclists vigilant, changing flats, and turning wheels.
