KHN’s ‘What The Health?’: Change Is in the Air – Martinsville Bulletin

Posted: at 12:59 am

Assuming former Vice President Joe Biden becomes President-elect Joe Biden and Republicans retain control of the Senate, the health agenda could be very different from what Democrats campaigned on. A GOP Senate is unlikely to want to pursue many of Bidens agenda items, including expanding eligibility for Medicare, boosting financial assistance for people who buy insurance under the Affordable Care Act, and creating a federal public option insurance plan.

Meanwhile, no matter who is elected, the ACA is on the line next week as the more conservative Supreme Court hears oral arguments in a case that could potentially result in its total overturn. A decision in that case is not expected until sometime next year.

This weeks panelists are Julie Rovner of Kaiser Health News, Joanne Kenen of Politico, Kimberly Leonard of Business Insider and Mary Ellen McIntire of CQ Roll Call.

Among the takeaways from this weeks podcast:

Ally Love on the Special Bond She Shares With the Other Peloton Instructors – POPSUGAR

Ally Love on Peloton Instructor Friendships and Stretching

Ally Love, a senior Peloton instructor, was one of 11 teachers when she joined the company four years ago. Now, that count has reached 34 teachers and Love said her incredible colleagues and the community she's helped cultivate solidifies her sense of purpose.

"As an early instructor, it's been incredible to see this sensational community grow to over three million members, and also to have seen Peloton innovate at the rate we have."

Love has a bird's eye view of how everyone interacts, from teachers to users. Members, however, hardly get to see the camaraderie between instructors.

"I think members are always curious about what the relationship between instructors is like, and I think it's fun for them to see how we're all friends and have so much fun together."

"We're friends, and we have a bond because of our unique position to experience, perform, and produce content that has never been produced before in the manner we're doing it at Peloton, which intersects media, tech, and fitness."

Another mystery to members is which classes teachers favor the most. But to be fair, Love struggled to provide a clear-cut answer.

"I do love Peloton Barre, especially intermediate classes, because it's new and a novelty. [Barre] requires no hardware, and I get to move my body differently."

She's a big fan of Sunday's With Love, Feel Good rides, and Tabata and Pop rides, too: "I know it seems like a lot, but we have such a variety of classes at Peloton, so it's hard to pick just one."

Love even gave Peloton's stretching sessions a shoutout when I asked her opinion on the app's most underrated class.

"I don't think there's an underrated class necessarily," she said, "but one thing we all encourage members to do is to take stretching classes. We have warmups, cooldowns, and stretches that are great no matter what discipline you're taking."

Investing in warmups and cooldowns are important parts of preparing your body for workouts, Love said which is why Peloton makes prioritizing stretching easy.

Nutritionist and fitness expert share exclusive tips on how to have a guilt free Diwali – PINKVILLA

Posted: at 12:59 am

without comments

Diwali 2020 is on November 14 and this festival reserves a special part for delicious foods. So, eat mindfully to have a guilt-free Diwali this year with the exclusive health tips from nutritionist Honey Thaker and fitness expert Namita Piparaiya.

Diwali is on its way which will be celebrated on November 14. Its the most important and grandest festival of India that is associated with lights, crackers and delicious foods. But crackers should not be included as they create noise pollution and are harmful. So, light up some sky lanterns and indulge in lots of desserts and lip-smacking dishes this Diwali.

But what about your diet and health? Though youre binging on those sweets, chocolates, desserts and snacks, there is guilt working inside you and warning about your health. So, instead of just over-consuming, have a guilt-free Diwali this year where you can enjoy delicious foods in an organised manner without ruining your health and diet program. Hence, Head Nutritionist Honey Thaker of Pure Nutrition and Namita Piparaiya, yoga and Ayurveda lifestyle specialist and founder of Yoganama shared some exclusive tips for a guilt-free Diwali. Take a look!

How to have a guilt-free Diwali this year?

Tips from Head Nutritionist Honey Thaker of Pure Nutrition for a guilt-free Diwali:

Opt for Homemade Sweets

Sweets are an essential part of Diwali and theres no celebration without mithai. Cutting them down will crush the festival vibe and thats the last thing we want. Opt for homemade sweets instead, as purchased sweets may contain hidden amounts of sugar and calories. You can have homemade sweets without having to worry about weight gain or feeling guilty as youll be aware of the exact amount of everything that goes into making it.

Drink Sufficient Water

Dont let the excitement of the festive season be the cause of dehydration. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Do Not Miss Workout

Do not make holidays an excuse to skip exercise and break your routine. Only a 15-minute workout is good enough to keep you in shape. As an added benefit, you may not even feel guilty after consuming those extra festive-calories if you work out and burn them later.

Get Sufficient Rest

Festivals can be hectic and can take a toll on your sleeping schedule. If youre unable to get sufficient rest, not only will you be unable to enjoy the festival and the parties, but you may also have a way for unwelcomed health concerns. Therefore, if you ought to attend a late-night party, ideally take an afternoon nap or make sure that you get sufficient sleep the next day.

Tips from Namita Piparaiya, yoga and Ayurveda lifestyle specialist and founder of Yoganama for a guilt-free Diwali:

Practice moderation

Dont go on a diet, but dont let go either. The best strategy is practising moderation. Enjoy a laddoo or two, but dont binge eat.

Eat mindfully

You dont have to resist a delicious dish or suppress the desire to eat it, but you can enhance the experience by eating slowly. When you eat slowly and mindfully, you will also eat less.

Use spices

Using spices like ginger or black pepper in your daily meals is a good way to keep the metabolism high.

Start your day right

Have a glass of warm lemon water in the morning or have diluted Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) before meals. They also help prevent bloating. More often than not, it is not weight gain but the bloating that makes us uncomfortable during festive seasons.

Stay active

One of the easiest ways to stay active during the day is to make sure youre not sitting around often. Get up, pace around, do chores, help others, get the door when the bell rings and so on. The non-exercise related activities that we do throughout the day are really good for our overall health, metabolism and also contribute significantly to weight loss.

Dont stress

This is not the time to stress about your weight or count every calorie you take in. You should focus on enjoying time with friends and family - prioritise them.

Practice Yoga

If you feel you find it hard to eat slowly or in moderation or that you cant help but stress about your weight let yoga come to your rescue. Allocate 15-20 mins for pranayama and meditation every morning and youll feel de-stressed, calm, less impulsive and you may notice that youre more in control of your cravings. Thats because yoga makes us more mindful.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday Sales Will Have the Best Fitness Deals Weve Seen This Year – menshealth.com

Posted: at 12:59 am

without comments

Lets face it, its been a challenge to get and stay in shape in 2020. Remember when gyms shuttered, and fitness equipment suddenly sold out in April? Luckily, over the past few months, brands have worked hard to restock fitness favorites that weve missed more than we ever thought possible. Since many gym memberships remain in limbo, among the highly-anticipated Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals are at-home fitness gear and equipment. Retailers arent holding back for 2020expect Black Friday and Cyber Monday fitness deals on everything from gym equipment and activewear to fitness trackers, smartwatches, and other gear.

Its time to say goodbye to excuses and usher in a healthier version of yourself.

Lets start with the basics. Black Fridaywhich is observed on the fourth Friday of Novemberis regarded as the largest shopping event of the year. This year, Black Friday will take place on Friday, November 27. Whether youre on the market for fitness gear or home gym equipment, the key to a successful Black Friday is to get most, if not all of your shopping done digitally.

While online shopping continues to grow exponentially, expect Black Friday to function differently this year. In addition to newly-implemented in-store crowd restrictions, dont expect to line up and camp outside retailers as the clock strikes midnight on Black Friday.

Cyber Monday is traditionally the biggest one-day online shopping event of the year with digital carts overflowing after (the last!) guilty long weekend of eat, sleep, and repeat. But Cyber Monday is also changing with the times. Were expecting retailers to reveal steep fitness web-exclusive deals earlier than ever before. Due to the increased emphasis on digital shopping, from both retailers and consumers, this year, we expect many deals to last well-beyond Cyber Monday.

Fitness brands and retailers are continuing to extend deals beyond Monday and into the week of November 30, best known as Cyber Week. Last year, brand and retailer favorites generously extended deals and discounts to the Tuesday after Cyber Monday, according to Salesforce.

There are plenty of great fitness deals to expect for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, whether youre building out your home gym and on the market for fitness equipment, or youre looking for activewear, sneakers, fitness trackers, or smartwatches.

On the equipment front, Rogue Fitness typically holds their Matte Black Friday sale throughout the month of November. We expect that some sales this year will be limited due to higher-than-usual demand. Referencing previous years, we also expect deals from equipment brands like Precor, TRX, Titan Fitness, FringeSport and XD Fitness, among others. Like many of you, were also keeping our eye out for offers from interactive home gym favorites including Mirror and Peloton.

In addition to equipment, we expect retailers and brands to offer deals on activewear and footwear. What good is a workout without the proper fitness gear? Were watching for deals on gear from brands including Nike, Reebok, Adidas, Puma, New Balance, Champion and more. And how do you plan to track your fitness progress? Cant forget the top fitness trackers and smartwatches of 2020. Last year, we saw unbeatable deals from brands like Suunto, Garmin, Fitbit, Samsung, Apple, Fossil, Mobvoi, and more.

The best fitness deals will come from brands and retail stores. In addition to monitoring deals from brands like Nike, Reebok, Adidas, Puma, New Balance, Champion, were keeping our eye on top retailers that carry fitness equipment. These include Dicks Sporting Goods, Walmart, Amazon, Academy, Target and Home Depot, among other favorites.

These deals will come and go fast. Keep your eye out for digital Black Friday ads, typically released by retailers and brands in early November. In addition to ads, we recommend signing up for newsletters from brands and retailers. Like with most things this year, Black Friday and Cyber Monday may require more advance planning.

With diligent research and a little organization, youll be well on your way to securing the tools to become the fittest version of yourself (note: motivation not included).

"First, reach for that resilience toolbox," said Dr. Tania Maria Caballero, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

"Recharge, re-center, take a break from social media and take care of yourself. New ideas and positive energy do not stem from a weary mind," she said.

If your "tribe" on social media is supportive, that's one thing. But all too often tensions flare when we can hide behind a keyboard, experts say.

"When I think about others' expressions of anger, especially on a virtual platform, I remind myself that in order to have a flame from a spark, you need to add more sparks. If you do not fuel the angry spark, you cannot start a fire," Caballero said.

Instead, Caballero suggested taking a walk; picking up the phone and talking with a good friend; and reading a favorite poem, prayer or song.

"Think of the choices you make as adding to your energy or subtracting -- how can you tip the scales to more energy?" Ackrill said. "Every little bit adds up, just as stress energy drains add up. (Make) tiny shifts, tiny choices toward nourishing your best self."

States with the highest cancer rates | Health and Fitness – Martinsville Bulletin

Posted: at 12:59 am

States with the highest cancer rates

An estimated 38% of adults will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes, according to the National Cancer Institute, making cancer a top medical priority: National Center for Health Statistics reports cancer is the most-researched disease in the U.S.

The National Institutes of Health dedicated more than $6 billion to cancer research in 2020. While this research has led to new treatments contributing to a consistent decrease in cancer mortality rates throughout the 21st century, about one-third of patients will not survive five years after their diagnoses. This threat is still a long way from being eradicated.

It's difficult to generalize trends of how cancer spreads across different populations. The term cancer in fact refers to a collection of more than 100 related diseases, each of which involves a breakdown in normal body processes due to cells dividing uncontrollably and spreading into surrounding areas. Every one of these individual diseases has different potential causes, and scientists are still hard at work identifying links between possiblecarcinogens and actual disease rates. Still, we can see a clear variation between groups of people on a geographic levelparticularly when comparing cancer rates across all 50 U.S. states. What factors might cause some states to have more people diagnosed with cancer each year, while other states have less? These questions are still being investigated, but hospitals and other research centers in every state are working to find answers.

To examine this geographic distribution, Stacker used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which carefully track the rates at which cancer affects the American population. We ranked all 50 states and the District of Columbia by their incidence rates of cancer in 2017 (the most recent data available). The incidence rate refers to the number of people out of 100,000 who are diagnosed with cancer in a givenyear and is age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population. We've also included incidence rates for the three most prevalent types of cancer in the U.S.: lung and bronchus cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer. Incidence rates for breast cancer and prostate cancer are only available for women and men respectively, even though both of these conditions may impact all genders. And, for 39 of 51 slides, the story includes local charities that support cancer patients and medical research in these states, collected via Charity Navigator.
