Commentary: Keeping a streak alive can be strong motivation to stick with a chosen activity – CNA

HOW STREAKS MOTIVATE BEHAVIOUR

By tapping into various psychological drivers of behaviour, streaks can motivate people in several ways.

In general, a streak adds a higher-level goal (keeping the streak alive) to a lower-level goal (completing an individual activity). Streaks also add structure to an activity, and structure can simplify thinking and decision making. The extent to which goal achievement or structure is important to you would influence your commitment to a streak.

I also found the way a streak is structured can affect the streak-holders commitment to it. For example, a streak of meditating at least 20 minutes each day may be more appealing, and lead to more commitment, than a streak of meditating at least 140 minutes each week.

While the amount of meditating is the same in both cases, a daily streak adds structure, thus simplifying decision making, and encourages the person to regularly engage in a beneficial behaviour.

Streaks can serve to gamify the underlying activity by creating rules and quantifying the outcome, and many people enjoy the challenge of a game.

Finally, I found that activities that are more relevant to ones identity are more likely to generate commitment to a streak. If someone identifies as religious, a daily streak of praying may be more appealing than a daily streak of playing Wordle because a praying streak can provide a way of demonstrating ones desired identity to others.

While streaks can compel behaviour, they do not motivate all people for all situations. They can even have the opposite effect. Some people are turned off by the prospect of a streak because theyre concerned about being obligated to it, as reflected in the comments of a former streak runner: I realised that, if I let it, the streak could become a thing that controlled my life, my travel and those around me.

As the calendar turns to a new year, many people resolve to engage in self-improving behaviours that facilitate better mental or physical health. People often begin streaks on Jan 1 or other important dates, such as holidays, birthdays or anniversaries of noteworthy events. Such temporal landmarks add meaning and structure to the streak and create a fresh start effect.

While many people make New Years resolutions, only a small percentage of people complete them. My research suggests that structuring a resolution as a streak may be the nudge that some people need to stick with it further into the new year - and maybe far beyond.

In our culture, we tend to fixate on the idea of adding to our lives. We desire more money, more education, more love. While all of this comes from a place of positive intention, we are missing an essential step of the process subtraction.

Imagine a mug that is full of piping hot coffee. If I look at that mug and think, I really want more coffee, it would be silly to top it off without first making room for more. The same concept applies to our lives. If the Google calendar is already full, adding more to it (even with the worthiest of pursuits) is likely to lead to burnout, overwhelm/shutdown, and ultimately a sense of failure.

Many of us havent practiced the art of releasing as much as weve practiced accumulating. Thus, when we reach a certain point in our lives, we find ourselves weighed down by responsibilities, our energy shooting out in all directions like an old-school sprinkler in the yard.

The first assignment my clients usually get is to declutter one thing. It could be physical like a junk drawer, emotional like a draining relationship, or digital like their email inbox. A small act of clearing out and making space sets the tone and the intention to draw in something new. It also brings a feeling of relief to let go of something thats ready to be released.

Curious about how to practice subtraction? Here are three ideas to try.

We often think about what we want to do, to get, or to create. Instead, try asking yourself, what do I want to release or let go of? It may invite a new perspective on how to evolve or improve our lives. When I think about desires, my default thoughts are about gaining the next level of financial freedom, having more travel experiences and time outdoors, and investing more into my close relationships. When I shift into what I want to release or let go of, I notice wanting to let go of thought patterns that tend to keep my anxiety present. I want to let go of screens as one of my primary ways of decompressing. I want to release myself from following the urge to push through when things are hard and busy, if its possible to rest and return to the task at hand instead. And truth be told, the latter is likely going to be a lot of the how of achieving the former.

In a related vein, consider what you might need to let go of or clear out in order to have space and resources for your desired direction. If someone wants to be healthier and have more energy, they may need to subtract working as much overtime, screen time before bed, or being overcommitted socially in order to have the time they need to get solid sleep and engage in more energizing activities.

Finally, try subtracting by addition. What I mean by this is to add a step into planning the upcoming week or month: schedule your white space first. White space is when there is nothing scheduled; its blocked to be your recharge time. Some folks use it to rest or read, others like to craft or exercise, while some like to leave it up to whatever calls to them in the moment. The point is that you are creating you time in your schedule first, then scheduling everything else after that. Despite the thought many of us have that theres not enough time, when you schedule your white space first, the most important things will still get done.

So, yes, keep asking yourself what you want more of. And, with perhaps equal reverence and attention, consider what you want to subtract.

Id appreciate any ideas on how to develop a daily practice of embracing gratitude.

Congratulations on choosing such a worthy intention as you embark on your 2024 adventure.

Since you asked, lets start with the science. In the past twenty years, scientists and psychologists have continued to examine the measurable benefits of gratitude.The Journal of Health Psychologypublished a study where participants who expressed gratitude reported less inflammation, fatigue, and anxiety. Also, studies have found that practicing more appreciation reduces the psychological stress on the body which is a significant cause of chronic pain.

If you want to get into the weeds of the science, consider this. According to researchers, when a person feels the positive emotions of gratefulness, their brain structure actually changes. First, the medial prefrontal cortex of the brain lights up, which is responsible for feelings of reward, morality, social connections, and the ability to recognize positive things and experiences.

Gratitude creates new neural pathways in these zones. A repeated practice of gratitude, as youre proposing, strengthens the ability to revisit positive experiences and their emotional benefits over time.

Perhaps AJ Jacobs, author ofThanks a Thousand,can give you additional inspiration. Jacobs book recounts his mission to thank every single person who played a part in making his morning coffeeover 1,000 people. His journey took him from a coffee shop barista to the Colombian coffee farmer to the lid designer. He also thanked the lady from pest control who kept the bugs out of the coffee warehouse.

Jacobs writes, When trying to go to sleep, instead of counting sheep, try counting things youre grateful for - in alphabetical order.

Keeping a daily gratitude journal is a more practical way of helping you stay in a mindset of gratitude. At the end of each day, simply record all that youre grateful for. Perhaps its something specific that happened that day or something for which youre continually grateful like good health or clean sheets. I often express gratitude for the simple things like a bed to sleep in, healthy food to eat, and people who love me.

Saying grace at mealtime is another good gratitude practice. Not only can you express thanks for the food before you and the hands that grew and prepared it, but also for whatever else is on your mind that day.

Offering a prayer of gratitude every morning when you wake up is another opportunity. I often say a prayer of thanks for being alive and pain free. This is where gratitude for a bed and clean sheets comes in.

Here are a few coaching questions and a request to get you started: Who have you thanked today? What difference does it make when someone thanks you? Think of someone who rarely receives appreciation and thank them.

Francis Ngannou has been sharing his newfound wealth.

At the beginning of 2023, the former UFC heavyweight champion made the bold decision to leave MMAs premier promotion in search of bigger paydays.

Ngannou signed a lucrative deal with the Professional Fighters League [PFL] before booking a mega-money clash with boxing superstar Tyson Fury in October.

The 37-year-old shocked the world as he dropped Fury in his boxing debut and came away as an unlucky loser after the judges controversially gave the WBC heavyweight champion a split decision victory.

Regardless of the result, Ngannou was the events big winner as he earned tons of credits, a new career in boxing, and a purse worth more than all 14 of his UFC fights combined.

The trickle-down effect of that purse was felt by those around him, including Eric Nicksick, who claims to have received a life-altering payday.

It was the most money Ive ever been paid by a fighter it was unbelievable, the revered MMA coach told MMA Junkie Radio.

It was more than I expected. Obviously, Francis has always taken great care of me, but it floored me. When I saw my Wells Fargo account that morning, it literally brought me to tears.

"Thats a true story. Literally brought me to tears because he changed my life not only from a professional standpoint but a monetary standpoint.

It allowed me a lot of financial freedom to allow me to be able to enjoy my coaching, enjoy being a dad and a husband and I get to take my kids to Park City this weekend, my daughters 16th birthday. Helped us buy a new car.

Nicksick, who operated as Ngannous chief cornerman in the UFC, noted that he played a secondary role in Ngannous fight with Fury as Dewey Cooper led the coaching team in Saudi Arabia.

He added: Remember, as his head coach, the two title fights with Stipe (Miocic) and (Ciryl) Gane, he paid me more for the Tyson Fury fight as basically his assistant behind Dewey.

I was behind Dewey, and I got paid way more than I did in the Gane and Stipe fights and he was taking care of me on that, as well, percentage-wise.

If he wants to box, man, Im all for it. All day long, brother.

FRANCIS NGANNOU shared the wealth after his lucrative fight with Tyson Fury.

The UFC legend shocked the boxing world after he pushed Fury all the way when the pair came to blows in October.

Ngannou was reportedly very well paid for his professional boxing debut with the 37-year-old said to have earned around 8.7MILLION.

And the incredible sum didn't just change his life, but also the life of his coach for the fight, Eric Nicksick.

The Cameroon-born fighter has been coached by Nicksick since 2018 and certainly thanked the American for his help after the fight.

Nicksick revealed that Ngannou's generosity following his split-decision loss to Fury has flipped his life upside down.

Speaking to MMA Junkie, he said: "It was the most money Ive ever been paid by a fighter it was unbelievable,

"It was more than I expected. Obviously, Francis has always taken great care of me, but it floored me.

Boxers are generally understood to pay coaches anywhere between five and 20 per cent of their earnings following a fight.

And whatever figure it was that Ngannou gave Nicksick it certainly left him grateful for the changes it allowed him to make.

Francis Ngannou arguably made the biggest impact in combat sports in 2023.

To kick off his yearly campaign, the 37-year-old Ngannou made the bold decision to bet on himself and leave behind the UFC, where he made his name and ultimately became the heavyweight champion. Unable to negotiate a new deal that allowed him the freedom to pursue other ventures like boxing The Predator parted ways with the promotion and signed with the PFL as not only a fighter but an owner and chairman, overseeing PFLs new Africa league.

Ngannou has yet to make his return to MMA since his January 2022 unanimous decision win over Ciryl Gane at UFC 270. He has, however, made his dream of competing as a professional boxer a reality when he took on the worldwide best Tyson Fury in October. Despite coming up short via split decision, Ngannou was the clear winner in the grand scheme as he performed much better than anyone expected him to. Additionally, the amount of money he made is more than his entire UFC career combined, according to Ngannou. The Cameroon native didnt get to this point by himself though, and his longtime head coach at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas Eric Nicksick is also enjoying the fruits of their collaborative labor.

Nicksicks 2023 outside of Ngannou was a big success overall as he continued building champions. The most notable of the bunch undeniably being the surprise UFC titleholder of the year Sean Strickland, who won middleweight gold with a clean unanimous decision over Israel Adesanya at UFC 293 in September.

Ngannous rise to the UFC title saw Nicksick by his side throughout his biggest title efforts, which came with the title win in his rematch against Stipe Miocic in March 2021 before the aforementioned Gane defense. What caught Nicksick the most off-guard about his training for the Fury match was that he wasnt nearly as involved as the previous two MMA tilts.

Remember, as his head coach, the two title fights with Stipe and Gane, he paid me more for the Tyson Fury fight as basically his assistant behind Dewey, Nicksick said. I was behind Dewey and I got paid way more than I did in the Gane and Stipe fights and he was taking care of me on that, as well, percentage-wise. If he wants to box, man, Im all for it. All day long, brother.

I think it does show that youre able to go outside the UFC and still be successful. Its hard to put an evaluation when you talk about Francis and his star power and what hes capable of doing. Can Jeremy Kennedy do that same thing? I dont know. Theres just guys I dont know if thats going to work out in their favor the same way it did for Francis. But it also gives guys more options, and I think more options are important to have.

Life throws you a curve ball from time to time and, as a result of that, 12 years ago my family moved to France. And then ten years ago, weirdly my brother, who was going through his own curve ball, suddenly had a message from somebody who he had met literally in another time and another world, offering him a job if he was interested in Soller. He had no idea where it was but decided to give it a go about ten years and came out to Mallorca. So he came out, said it was lovely and amazing and decided to stay. Then he got me to come out with the kids for a holiday and I agreed. It is gorgeous and thought why not be here with my brother.

Moving to Mallorca In the meanwhile my parents were living in Oman and they had had enough after some ten years and suddenly announced they were going to come and live with us in France to be with the kids. I said that was cool but that the following year I might be moving to Mallorca.

So, my mother decided one morning to come and join us for the summer and then asked - why dont we just move now? But I had two kids, two dogs, a full apartment. Nevertheless, three weeks later we all moved to Soller - the whole family, and we all moved here nine years ago.

I guess that was the beginning of my new personal journey. Mallorca has been amazing for my children, its enabled them to put down some strong roots and I too realised there was a lot going on. It healed me too and then I came into the coaching world around five years ago now.

Human behaviour What sparked that? Well Ive always been working since I finished university aged 20. But I never really enjoyed it, it was something that paid the bills and thats what you had to do; you never really questioned it. I got very frustrated, there was something definitely missing. The business was ticking over, Ive got an amazing business partner who didnt really need me on the ground and I was bored, looking for something. So I started studying for the sake of studying. Ive always loved human behaviour, psychology, how humans think and how people are and I kind of fell upon these coaching courses and that was where my new journey started.

When you start to train as a coach you go through that process yourself. You go though the whole thing and so I did several courses and ended up taking and completing some of the most prestigious and highly valued courses in the world and eventually set up my own business. I had finally found something that fulfilled me and spoke to my soul. I get up every morning and I have something to look forward to do, something I like, being able to spend the day working with people and helping them on their journey. For me there really isnt anything better and that frustrated feeling I had before has definitely gone, Tiffany explained. What is interesting is that everybody talks about your coaching niche - business coaches, leadership coaches etc., but it comes down to the same things.

Self awareness Ive coached people who have come to me for things from looking for a promotion or a career change to having problems with their wife or partner and what you end up coaching them on is themselves, because anything we want to change or achieve in our life has to come from us. Its not going to fall into our laps. It always comes down to self awareness, personal development and communication, she said.

If you want to know what my specialty is it would be that. It would be personal development and communication. Now when you look at the different places that you can find on the internet, it can be personal development, leadership development or business communication development, but it really is just semantics. Its talking to the people who would be needing particular things, but it really does come down to getting clarity, understanding that you have choice and affecting the change. For me, those are the three Cs as the main factors in coaching.

Expat coaching For example, here in Mallorca, what are peoples pain points? I look about and see that a lot of people come to Mallorca. The summer is fabulous, its amazing, they buy a holiday home, perhaps eventually move the family out, but the winter is a different story. Being an expat anywhere has its problems and challenges and so I could speak to them as a sort of expat coach. But the coaching I would do would be exactly the same as if I was coaching you how to handle all your pain, whatever; those three Cs apply to everything and everyone whatever the situation. It is about getting clarity, understanding what the problem is because a lot of people know there is something wrong, but they dont know what. And that problem is always with you.

People like to think that somebody made me feel like this but nobody makes you feel like anything. Were always blaming the outside, especially in the world we live in today. The problem is that people know whats wrong with them but they expect other people to navigate around them.

There is a lot of I want to win the lottery but Im not going to buy a ticket kind of thing, So people come in and theyre like I want to get this promotion, but its never going to happen for somebody like me because I dont have the right qualifications. I dont have this or that. Thats not true, she stressed.

It doesnt matter if you have not been to university or have no A levels, it does not matter and I have experience with this. Lets look at what youve got. You may, will have amazing attributes and you would have gone past the stage where they are going to be looking at qualifications. People get to a certain age when businesses dont care any more about those documents.

Once you get rid of the blocks of what you think are the things that are going to stop you, it sets you free to take a chance. What are you going to lose? she explained. Ive helped people get rid of those blocks, get to know what they want, obtain that clarity. Thats when you can actually start moving forward, taking the steps, putting the plan into action. Strip away the social stigmas so many of us are worried or obsessed about.

There are four things which stop us from achieving anything or what we really want. One is interpretation - were sure we know what everyone is thinking, theres no point me even trying because its not going to happen. Stereotypes Then youve got limiting beliefs which is that societal stereotype system we grow up with which dont bear any truth; theres no reason behind them. We just believe them because weve been told them without questioning. And the last one is the real kicker, that gremlin, that little voice which tells you youre not good enough; thats your internal voice. Its something that everybody has and it takes some work to quieten down. We need to retrain the brain to actually believe that we are good enough.

It sounds very woo woo, if you put your mind to it, you can do it. But you really can. If you want to do something, you want to achieve something and you visualise it, you know what you are doing and youre going to take the steps to get there, you will do it, Tiffany underlined. Its all down to you at the end of the day.

"Don’t Take It For Granted": Suniel Shetty’s New Year Post On Good Health And Fitness – NDTV

Actor and businessman Suniel Shetty is an avid social media user. He consistently imparts valuable insights to his LinkedIn followers, drawing from his extensive experience in the film industry and various businesses. Now, in a recent LinkedIn post, Mr Shetty emphasised the importance of good health and fitness. "Only remember, while you're giving it your all at work, what you owe to your family and yourself, is good health. Don't take it for granted," the actor wrote in the post.

Taking to LinkedIn, Mr Shetty wished his followers the best for 2024. "2024 is going to be a great year for our country, and I genuinely expect that many of you here on Linkedin will play a huge role in taking our country and our economy forward," he wrote.

"I have no doubt that there are many of us here who've made plans and resolutions to be healthier this year. For those that have, I'll say you've done the most important thing you needed to - acknowledge the need for change," the actor added.

However, Mr Shetty acknowledged that the "problem" lies in the execution, which is the reason why most people give up on their fitness goal once the initial excitement has worn off.

"There are 2 major issues as I see them. 1, we don't plan the process well enough, and 2, we expect results overnight. Like wealth creation, health and fitness work best through compounding. I've said this before - there's no magic diet or extraordinary routine. You just need to keep at it, and turn up everyday," the actor wrote.

"Look for progress, not perfection. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2024!" he concluded.

Mr Shetty shared the post just a few hours back and since then it has accumulated more than 230 comments and over 3,500 likes.

Over the years, I have made my health goals less stringent and more adaptable as people miss the trick by being too stringent and not thinking on alternatives. If you don't get an hour, use 30 mins for a Yoga or Meditation or some light cardio/weight at home... but do something and don't try hard to find an excuse.. For this year, I am aiming for 2 days of Yoga/weight and 3 days of a sports or running and I am sorted," commented one user.

About eight years ago, Roberts lost his father to pancreatic cancer at age 69. His grandfather died at 47 from a heart attack, his uncle at 40, also from a heart complaint. In the family theres that thing in the background, so theres always an awareness of that, he says. You have to be on top of all you possibly canto try to see the red flags, deal with them and make sure were not going to have them become big problems.

Encouragingly, it is never too late to start. Whether youre 50, 60 or 70, you can do something to make a positive change. We shouldnt think of ourselves as being old at any phase, he says. I know we have an ageing process, but we can do anythingWe can change anybody and add years to healthy lifespan, as well as probably longevity.

He is as committed to his own health and fitness as you might expect, undertaking some four hours of low-intensity cardio weekly, usually on his exercise bike. Some days he does this at 5.30am (his typical rising time), some days at 9pm. Then theres his two weekly sessions of quite high intensity cardio, one session of very high intensity cardio, heavy lifting two to three times a week, lighter lifting once a week and tennis once or twice a week. Alongside all this, he tries to fit in a weekly infrared sauna, to boost recovery and circulation, and cold showers for five minutes most days.

He averages six and a quarter hours sleep a night but his wearable WHOOP device tells him his ratio of deep sleep is high, so the shut-eye he gets is great quality.

On the dietary front, he is not obsessive: It needs to be [that] you enjoy food. His is roughly 70 per cent vegan, the rest mostly fish. He eats red meat once a week (it gets the iron levels up) and treats himself to a glass or two of good red wine about three nights a week. There really isnt one food thats a bad food, he says.

He takes only a limited amount of supplements vitamin D, occasionally potassium and believes that while monitoring your data through wearable tech is helpful, it should not dominate your life.

He may be responsible for many a famous physique, but hes adamant that we shouldnt get bogged down in the body beautiful. It has to be fit for purpose.

Roberts lives in Battersea, south west London, and has his children, 21 and 19, at home with him often when theyre back from university. When not working, or working out, he likes travelling, and describes himself as a big history nerd.

After an hour in his company, its impossible not to come away wanting to do more, and do it better. Its about making the most of the years we have, he says. Life is precious and therefore [we should] make the most of each moment.
