Dr. Ali Ashtari obtained his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Electrical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran, and his Ph.D in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Manitoba. He currently holds a post doctoral fellowship at the University of Manitoba. He describes himself as a "militant atheist", and has recently developed an interest in meditation and the scientific study of spirituality. The Winnipeg Skeptics is a local organisation that focuses on the promotion of scientific skepticism. The group hosts monthly Drinking Skeptically events, in addition to regular group outings, awareness campaigns, and an annual SkeptiCamp.
