Taking a look at 6 of the best health apps – Feed Leader

Posted: May 15, 2020 at 9:42 am

Forecast to exceed 22.8 billion by the end of 2020, the UKs fitness/wellness industry is booming. Although the market is mostly made up of gym memberships, sports equipment and supplements, health apps are also starting to have a role, with many people using their mobile devices for more than just calls and texting.

With data from 2018 showing that around 29 per cent of Britons committed to losing weight, with over half giving up after a month just what are some of the apps available to help keep us motivated to health improvement?

Although this app wont work for you until after lockdown when gyms open, we thought it should still be included on the list because of how useful it is. Is the gym where you feel motivated, but you dont want to sign up to a contract? Then download Esquared. This app works in the same way as Uber in the sense that it allows you to find gym sessions and one-off classes in your area. The benefit of this app is that its non-committal and there are no subscription fees. Currently, its only available in London and Sydney, but keep an eye out in case it expands into an area near you!

Alongside vitamins like joint supplements, nearly everyone who has wanted to improve their health and fitness has heard of the couch to 5k challenge. Its ideal for those who dont particularly have the fitness levels to take on marathons but want to increase their physical ability. Presented by Public Health England, it builds you up gradually with a mix of running and walking so that within nine weeks you should be able to run 5 kilometres (3.1 miles). Theres also a choice of five virtual trainers to help you on your fitness journey and keep you motivated.

We know what youre thinking Pokmon is a game. But, this game is also useful for getting people active. The popular game works by individuals needing to be active in the community to progress in the game. According to Sport England, one in three kids in England take part in less than 30 minutes of physical activity each day. This was described by Sports Minister Mims Davies as simply unacceptable. With games like Pokmon Master, this is a great way to get kids active and taking part in an activity theyd enjoy. It was even found that the original Pokmon Go was also helping to bring families together as parents and children were competing with one another as to who could catch the rare monsters.

Similarly, the Harry Potter version can also do so. For those who arent particularly a fan of the Pokmon franchise, this take based on JK Rowlings creation could be just the thing. It works by users having to complete a certain number of steps in order to open up treasure chests for more loot. Also, as magical creatures and characters spawn on the map in-game, you need to physically travel to move your character across the map. However, unlike the Pokmon take, this game will be able to track your activity without even running the app. Therefore, youll be able to track your steps without being synced to the game, and those who like to wear a Fitbit will more than likely agree that this can become a game in itself!

GP at Hand, an NHS app, gives you the option to chat with an NHS GP 24/7 via a video appointment. Usually, youll be seen within two hours once you make your request, meaning that you no longer have to wait weeks for an appointment or attend a walk-in surgery. It allows the doctor to discuss your symptoms and, where necessary, you can show them your issues on camera. Ideal for lockdown, too!

Its important to remember that we shouldnt just be focusing on our physical health. Mental health has, rightly so, become a major topic of interest. Campaigns such as Its Okay Not to Be Okay are bringing our mental well-being into the forefront of the attention via the media. However, in the UK, approximately one in four of us will experience a mental health problem each year. Depression and anxiety are two of the most common issues. This American-based app helps anyone who feels isolated discuss their concerns and issues thanks to it connecting you instantaneously to one of its 160,000 trained volunteer listeners and licensed therapists. Its anonymous, free, and confidential. It also allows you to participate in guides chats through group support discussion rooms.

Although in lockdown it might be easy to slip into a routine of scrolling through social media, smartphones can be used for much better things! So download one of these apps and improve your health.

Cities with the highest (and lowest) uninsured rates – Lincoln Journal Star

Posted: at 9:42 am

At the state level, Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the country at 17.7 percent, about twice as high as the national rate. Other states in the South and Southeast, including Oklahoma, Florida, and Georgia, also have high rates of uninsured residents. At the other end of the spectrum, Massachusetts has the lowest uninsured rate in the country, with just 2.8 percent of its residents lacking health insurance.

To determine the cities with the highest and lowest uninsured rates, researchers at Self Financialanalyzed the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureauand the CDC. The researchers ranked cities according to the share of residents without health insurance. Researchers also looked at the uninsured rate for individuals below the poverty line, the number of uninsured people, the number of uninsured children, and the percentage of adults reporting good physical health.

To improve relevance, only cities with at least 100,000 people were included in the analysis. Additionally, cities were grouped into the following cohorts based on population size:

Don Walton: Coronavirus and the mail-in election – Lincoln Journal Star

Posted: at 9:42 am

The governor has aptly noted that highway deaths could be lowered to almost zero if speed limits were set at 5 mph, but that's not a choice that is made in living a normal life.

But it's also true that when we experience blizzards and floods and other danger, we close those highways until it's safe to proceed.

It's the governor's call and he remains in constant contact with UNMC.

My personal call will still be occasional curbside restaurant pickup, and I'm guessing that will be the majority call in Lincoln for a while.

* Following what appears to essentially be an extra-legal pardon of Michael Flynn for admitted crimes, it's obvious we need to rename the U.S. Department of Justice.

* The Ricketts administration has unveiled a series of new mother-friendly policies to assist state employees, including enhanced maternity benefits, designated rooms for nursing mothers, priority parking for expectant mothers and a pilot program to allow parents to bring children to work.

* When asked by Omaha congressional candidate Ann Ashford what advice he would give to a candidate during a conversation on Facebook, Bob Kerrey could not resist: "Learn how to answer a question other than the one that was asked."

Tauranga trainer helping women thrive with fitness – The Bay’s News First – SunLive

Posted: at 9:42 am

A Merivale mum is using an online fitness platform to connect with women and help them turn their lives around. Personal trainer Marisha Wilson, 29, launched Fitness for Females on Monday.

She says her online workout videos are attracting a hard to reach demographic of women from New Zealand and beyond.

Marisha, who is also a qualified social worker, says she integrates Maori health model Te Whare Tapa Wha into her videos to help members create balance in their life.

So far her newly launched group has about 300 members, and the public Facebook page Rish Fit Personal Training has accumulated almost 3000 followers.

Initially, Marisha posted live workout videos to her public Facebook page, but after noticing about 92 per cent of her following was female, she decided to move to a female only private Facebook group.

It came to my attention that I was starting to reach females who have been and are in vulnerable situations in life - who experience anxiety and depression.

She says a large portion of her followers are also Maori.

Maybe they are attracted to me because I am also Maori? Or maybe it could be that I am very real and genuine. I am myself always.

One Tauranga woman took to Facebook praising the work Marisha does, saying since she connected with the group her life has flipped right around.

Charity Thompson spoke of the struggles she faced after ending an 11-year addiction to methamphetamine.

The mum of four found herself gaining weight, feeling depressed and losing confidence after she came off the drug five years ago.

I gained 30kg in the first year of being clean. I went looking for a ladies group - I knew deep down I wanted support and only wanted it from females.

I found a lovely local group, which worked for a while, but it didnt give me enough as it was only a workout group.

Then I stumbled across Rish. And man, I am so grateful I did. Now, if I feel a little down, I know I have got the tools in my kete to pull me right back up.

Fitness for me is more than exercise - its my new way of life, my new drug. It gives me that good feeling, that happy feeling and from the results, I am driven to succeed more now than ever before in my life.

Marisha says its her mission to help her female audience sustain their health and fitness journeys for life.

The main foundation of the group is to create a way for females to connect, and unite together through using exercise as a tool.

Its for women from all walks of life, she says.

We are about supporting female independence, female freedom, and encouraging each other to keep chasing health and fitness goals, whatever they may be.

Everything the Men’s Health Fitness Director Eats in a Typical Day – menshealth.com

Posted: at 9:42 am

For Men's Health Fitness Director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S, creating the perfect eating schedule wasnt always easy.

Ive been strength training since I was in high school, but for a long time, I wasnt in control of my diet and didnt know what I was doing, he says. Once I learned that about five or six years ago, then I was able to make really good gains in terms of strength and the size I wanted.

Samuel keeps to a rigid eating schedule, making sure to fuel every 2 hours from the moment he wakes up. He also tracks how much he eats throughout the day. His preferred daily amounts are around 180 grams of protein, 120 to 180 grams of carbohydrates and 60 to 90 grams of fats.

"As long as Im awake, Im gonna eat. I want to be sure that I have some form of nutrition floating through my system so my muscles can constantly get a re-supply of nutrients." he says.

Samuel's day usually begins at 7:30 a.m., when he reaches for a shake. He likes to mix 1 scoops of whey protein, 1 tablespoon of almond butter, a greens supplement to get some antioxidants, and water to get his first food source of the day.

There is one catch: Its not necessarily the best tasting drink, Samuel says. But it also doesnt taste as bad as you may think. By 10:00 a.m., Samuel is ready for another shake to carry him through morning meetings.

This content is imported from {embed-name}. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

When noon comes around, Samuel switches to natural sources of protein. A typical lunch for him includes six ounces of salmon, three ounces of brown rice, and two to three ounces of broccoli. That way, he gets a good green vegetable, a slow-burning carb to keep him going through the rest of the day, and a great go-to protein source. He repeats this meal at about 2:30 p.m. I dont need a lot of choices in my diet, he says, as long as its giving me the fuel I need.

At 5:00 p.m., it's workout mode. Before training Samuel tries to get in another meal. Because hes looking to bring a variety of natural protein sources into his food routine, he likes to have five to six ounces of a protein (either chicken, beef or pork), four ounces of potatoes, and a side of peppers and onions.

If he feels like he needs to add some fat into his dinner, then hell eat a spoonful of almond butter straight out of the jar. Hell repeat this again around 7:30 p.m. and by 10:00 p.m., he has his last fueling by eating some salmon and broccoli.

As for hydration, Samuel has a target of finishing a gallon of water a day. Although it might seem daunting (especially at work), he makes it easier by carrying around a large bottle of water everywhere, especially at meetings where he doesnt always need to speak.

I dont have to talk for every minute of every single meeting, he says. Meetings are a great chance to sit back when somebody else is talking and guzzle as much water as I possibly can.

Even though Samuels diet looks regimented, he does like to have a cheat day on Saturdays. He does have some caveats though: He respects his water intake, eating intervals ,and protein intake. But dont think he only likes to eat salmon and broccolihe does love some peanut butter cups and a slice or two of cheesecake.

So whats Samuels advice for someone looking to create their own eating structure? Find something that will work with you for the long haul and will give you the nutrients necessary for health and for building muscle. Find a way that works for you. Dont fall into the trap of going onto a restricted system. Build a system that you can maintain.

Introducing When the Sparrow Falls, the Debut Novel From Neil Sharpson – tor.com

Posted: at 9:41 am

Will Hinton, executive editor at Tor Books, has acquired North American rights to two books by debut novelist Neil Sharpson, from his agent Jennie Goloboy at the Donald Maass Literary Agency. The first book, When the Sparrow Falls, is scheduled for publication in spring 2021.

Part thriller, part literary science fiction, When the Sparrow Falls is an exploration of the coming AI revolution, transhumanism, totalitarianism, loss, and the problem of evil.

In the future, AI are everywhere. They are our employers, our employees, our friends, lovers and even our children. Over half the human race now lives online.

But in the Caspian Republic, the last true human beings have made their stand, and their repressive, one-party state is locked in perpetual cold war with the outside world.

The republic is thrown into chaos when the virulently anti-AI journalist Paulo Xirau is found dead in a bar. At his autopsy, the unthinkable is discovered: Xirau was AI.

Security Agent Nikolai South is given a seemingly mundane task; escorting Xiraus widow while she visits the Caspian Republic to identify her husbands remains. He is stunned to discover that the beautiful, reserved, Lily Xirau bears an unearthly resemblance to his wife, who has been dead for thirty years.

As Nikolai and Lily delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding Paulos death, trying desperately to avoid the attentions of the murderous Bureau of Party Security, a tentative friendship between the two begins to blossom. But when they discover Xiraus last secret South must choose between his loyalty to his country and his conscience.

Neil Sharpson said:

Ive been living in the Caspian Republic (whether as a play, screenplay or novel) for around nine years now and its almost impossible to believe that the journey is finally at an end. Its a story about one man trying to survive in a brutal regime who is given one final chance to make amends to the woman he let down. Im incredibly grateful to Will Hinton and the team at Tor for choosing this book, and to Jennie Goloboy, the best agent any writer could ask for. And most of all to my wife Aoife, who never doubted for a second, even when I did. And while its certainly not a place Id recommend moving to, I sincerely hope people enjoy their time in the Caspian Republic.

Will Hinton added:

It is a rare and joyous occasion to discover a debut novel brimming with this much talent, insight, poise and heart. The voice of Nikolai South is indelible and the world he brings us into is unforgettable, part Le Carr, part Philip K. Dick, and many layers besides. Sharpson asks questions, and gives a few answers, about what is gained and what is lost in the way we live in the 21st century that will keep me thinking for a long time. I cant wait for you to read it!

When the Sparrow Falls is scheduled for publication in spring 2021 by Tor in the US and by Rebellion in the UK.

Neil Sharpson lives in Dublin with his wife and their two children. Having written for theatre since his teens, Neil transitioned to writing novels in 2017, adapting his own play The Caspian Sea into When the Sparrow Falls.
