Health First has announced it is closing two of its three Pro Health and Fitness locations to make room for the future.
Locations on Merritt Island near State Road 520 and on Melbournes Holmes Regional Medical Center campus will close to make way for Health First's plannedwellness and health villages.
The site on Merritt Island also is where Health First plans to relocateCape Canaveral Hospital.
Health First is pleased to announce that we are ready to begin the construction process for our new Melbourne and Merritt Island Wellness Villages, Brian Connor, chief operations officer of Outpatient Wellness Services, said in a statement. To do so, we are discontinuing operations of the Pro Health & Fitness Centers and other services at these two locations. Our commitment to wellness remains steadfast, and we will continue operations at Viera Pro Health.

The Viera Pro Health location, which opened in 2008, is the last of what was once four fitness centers. Health First closed a Palm Bay location in 2017.
At the time, executives said it was because there were 11 fitness centers in a 5-mile radius to thePalm Bay location, and that since opening the fitness centers some 20 years ago, the number of options had skyrocketed.
It is unclear how many jobs will be impacted.
Health First said they would work with affected employees.
We are working with associates impacted by this change and providing them options or helping them seek other opportunities within Health First if they choose, a statement said.
As far as members are concerned, Health First said if Pro Health members wish to cancel their gym memberships, they can email FitnessExperts@HF.org. All prepaid items will be refunded at the members request.

The Merritt Island fitness center, where the new Cape Canaveral Hospital will be located, is on a spot that once contained a business named Phar-Mor. That building was demolished in the mid-1990s to make way for Health First, which opened the 90,000-square-foot Healthplex in 1996. On the adjacent land just to the south, which is vacant, there once was a building that housed a Kmart. That building was demolished in the 90s but nothing was ever built on that location.
No timetable was given on when the Wellness Villages or new hospital would be completed.
All of Pro Healths fitness centers have been closed for nearly two months because of the COVID-19 pandemic.Gyms were not listed as businesses permitted to open as part of Gov. Ron DeSantis' first phase to reopen Florida's economy, sothere is no word yet as to when the Viera location might reopen.
We understand the inconvenience this decision might cause. However, as we expand the Wellness Villages, we will increase easy and convenient access to high-quality wellness and healthcare for all Brevard, Connor said in the statement.

Weight Watchers pops on bullish analyst call, but traders prefer another fitness stock – CNBC
Posted: at 9:43 am
Call it a win for the wellness trade.
Shares of WW International, formerly Weight Watchers, rallied nearly 5% on Wednesday after Jefferies initiated coverage of the stock with a buy rating and a $32 price target. The firm said the coronavirus pandemic had ushered in a "durable trend" that could sustain "superior growth" for Weight Watchers: consumers prioritizing wellness.
The stock popped as much as 10% in intraday trading before cooling off slightly to close at $24.60, a 4.75% gain for the day. It is down more than 36% year to date.
The recent enthusiasm around Weight Watchers' prospects has been encouraging, JC O'Hara, chief market technician at MKM Partners, told CNBC's "Trading Nation" on Wednesday.
"The stock made a recent low around $10. It's trading now about $25. So, that's pretty impressive over the short term, but ... in 2018, this was a $100 stock," O'Hara said.
"So, rather than bottom-fishing in names that are close to 52-week lows, I want momentum," he said. "If this health and wellness and fitness craze is here to stay, I want to buy stocks that have already started to participate."
For that, O'Hara turned to Peloton, which he called a "much better option" now.
"You could see over the last few months it's traced out an inverse head-and-shoulders pattern," he said, referencing a chart of the stock since its 2019 IPO. "What that really means is it's a positive pattern that's getting the buyers ready, and typically, this pattern is a buy as soon as it breaks above resistance."
The $36 appeared to be the stock's ceiling of resistance until last week, when it broke through that level and "ran another 22%," O'Hara said.
"The worst thing you could say about Peloton is maybe it's overextended or maybe overbought," he said. "Yes, it is up 150% from the March lows. So, to us, I think the best play here is look at Peloton. Look to add or buy on a pullback to 40, and I think that's the way to play this new theme taking place in the economy."
Peloton closed down more than 2% on Wednesday at $45.17.
Mark Tepper, president and CEO of Strategic Wealth Partners, is also a fan of Peloton's prospects, though he expressed concern that "a lot of the easy money's already been made" in the health and wellness space.
"There's no doubt there is a structural shift happening here. Work out from home, not just work from home, [is] here to stay," Tepper said in the same "Trading Nation" interview. "If you've spent a lot of money outfitting your home gym, it seems less like that you'd do a quick 180 as the economy reopens and go back to the gym."
Tepper cited theshortage of exercise weights such as dumbbells, kettlebells and barbells as evidence for consumers investing in their home fitness setups.
"This is where Peloton has an advantage. I understand it's not strength training, it's cardio, but they actually still have bikes," he said. "For about 100 bucks a month, you can get the bike, you can get the subscription, it's a great value prop for the consumer, but it is a little bit expensive."
Tepper was referring to Peloton's payment plan for its$2,245 exercise bike. Consumers can pay in full or enroll in a 39-month payment plan at $58 a month, which with the $39-a-month all-access class membership totals $97 a month.
"This reminds me a lot of what Apple did a few years ago," Tepper said. "Less and less people were willing to shell out 1,000 bucks for an iPhone, so they started offering ways to lease the phone or finance the phone. I think that's what Peloton's doing here."
Disclosure: CNBC parent Comcast-NBCUniversal is an investor in Peloton.

Coronavirus response | Champaign County judge orders St. Joseph gym that reopened to be shut down – Champaign/Urbana News-Gazette
Posted: at 9:42 am
URBANA A Champaign County judge has ordered that a gym in St. Joseph that reopened Thursday in violation of the governors stay-at-home order be shut down.
Champaign County Judge Tom Difanis issued a temporary restraining order Thursday against D&K Fitness, doing business as The Zone at 109 N. Main St.
States Attorney Julia Rietz, who sought the order on behalf of the Champaign County Public Health Department, said when a Champaign County sheriffs deputy served the order at the business at 3:45 p.m., there were about a dozen people working out there who were not staying 6 feet apart.
Difanis set a hearing for May 21.
Gyms and fitness centers are among the non-essential businesses that the governor has ordered closed to quell the spread of the coronavirus.
The countys order says by operating, The Zone is significantly endangering the public health and welfare.
Plaintiff will suffer irreparable injury unless this court issues an injunction because an outbreak would overwhelm the department of health and local hospitals ability to treat patients of COVID-19, and would be detrimental to the public health of Champaign County, it said.
The order said the harm to the gym is solely financial.
Therefore the balance of harm weighs in favor of granting an injunction to protect the residents of Champaign County, the order said.
Along with the restraining order, a sheriffs deputy served the manager with an order of closure from the health department, which spells out the fitness centers rights.
Signed by Champaign-Urbana Public Health District Administrator Julie Pryde, the order is effective through 5 p.m. May 29.
The temporary restraining order and the order of closure came after the health district asked the gym Wednesday to voluntarily comply with closure by hand-delivering to staff a cease-and-desist order.
Rietz said in the petition for the order that the gym owners attorney had sent a letter dated May 6 to county authorities, received Monday, explicitly providing notice that the respondent intended to open, effectively giving local authorities time to get a court order.
In a letter to Pryde dated Wednesday, one of the gym owners Greenville-based attorneys, Erik Hyam, wrote that a cease-and-desist letter does not remotely arise to the requirements of statute and that the gym did not intend to close absent a court order.

Staying healthy is more important than ever. Here’s how to bring exercise back to your life. – Bangor Daily News

Katie Norwood, a trainer at Wilcox Wellness & Fitness in Bangor, instructs a virtual training session via Zoom on April 8, 2020. Norwood instructed the class from the empty gym, where only she and one other trainer, who was giving a private virtual training session, were present. After demonstrating an exercise, Norwood watches her clients for proper form and gives encouragement as they go through the workout.

Maintaining your health is about more than just not contracting a deadly disease even during the pandemic. But as the stay-at-home orders have dragged on, many of us have let our daily physical activity slide, which compromises our physical health in other ways. Its time to change that.
Almost all chronic diseases are related to inactivity, said Jay Polsgrove, associate professor and coordinator of the Exercise Science Program at Husson University. When you do exercise [and] elevate things for a specified period of time for a short duration, thats when you get the health benefits.
But while that might have meant turning to the gym in the past, thats not possible right now in many cases. On May 11, some gyms and fitness centers in Maine could reopen for one-on-one personal training and outdoor fitness classes with fewer than 10 participants. But gyms in general wont reopen until June 1, during Phase Two of Maines reopening plan.
Polsgrove and James Graves, professor of exercise, health and sport sciences at University of Southern Maine, agreed that the best thing anyone can do when it comes to exercise is keep exercising regularly, even if you have fallen off of your usual fitness routine. After all, it is harder to get back on the fitness bandwagon the longer you wait between workouts.
Heres how to start incorporating exercise back into your life.
Seriously especially if you are working from home, the beginning to being healthier could be as simple as standing up and walking around the house or down the block every hour.
Try to find ways to be more active in your day, Polsgrove said. If you can build time into your day that you can get the body moving and blood circulating, that does have a big benefit.
Whether its running, rollerblading, jumping rope or doing yoga, find some sort of physical activity that makes you smile while you do it.
If you dont enjoy doing it youre not going to stick with it, Graves said.
Similarly, if the work out doesnt make you feel good because it is too intense, ease up and adjust to make sure you are still enjoying your daily workouts.
If you exercise at an intensity that is uncomfortable, youre less likely to do it again, Graves said. Make sure youre having fun, [though] its ok to push your limits a little bit.
Troy R. Bennett | BDN
A woman jogs down Free Street in Portland on Monday. The temperature touched 60 degrees in the city.
A variety of workouts will help you maintain good physical fitness. Graves referred to the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for the recommended quantity and quality of physical activity in healthy adults, including 30 minutes of aerobic kinds of activity 5 days a week, some strength training to build and maintain muscles mass and exercises for flexibility.
We know that physical activity is important for everyone, Graves said. Youve got to mix it up. Do something for muscles and bones, and a little bit of flexibility and balance. Its important to participate in a well-rounded exercise program.
Polsgrove said he plays a game with his week of workouts, where he sets a rough outline of his workout goals for the week and lets the weather decide what the workout will be for the day. For example, if it is nice outside, he will jog; if it is cloudy, he will lift weights.
Think you dont have time to exercise? Graves said that inserting short bursts of exercise throughout the day is not only effective to maintain your physical health, but it can also help break up the long days in quarantine.
You dont have to do it all at once, Graves explained. We know that three bouts of exercise that last 10 minutes each is equally as beneficial as one bout of 30 minutes. You can break up your routine [with] things you enjoy doing.
If you dont know where to start, try your stairs.
Theres nothing wrong with walking some stairs, Graves said. Do that for 10 minutes, three times a day, and thats 30 minutes of aerobic physical activity. Im not going to walk up and down my stairs for an hour, but I can do that for 10 minutes.
Gabor Degre | BDN
Barbara Rowe, 89, of Brewer lifts weights over her head during the Bone Builders class exercise at the The Heritage apartments in Brewer Wednesday. Rowe has been participating in the class for 11 years and she credits the exercises to help her able to walk. The program is intended for area seniors to have a regular exercise routine.
Likewise, there are other ways to use what you have to stay fit even if you are in a small space or dont have stairs.
Just about anything that provides resistance or weight can be used in place in dumbbells or barbells, Graves said. You can fill milk [jugs] with water those weigh about 12 pounds each. There are a lot of instructional videos about that. There are [also] exercises that you can do using furniture in your house.
If your living quarters are especially cramped, try exercising outside (safely, of course Graves said to always bring a mask with you).
Science shows that rituals help with motivation. Polsgrove said that he has a ritual for setting up his in-home exercise environment, where he moves chairs out of the way, puts his mats down, sets weights up and puts on upbeat music.
It feels like youre transitioning to an exercise environment, he said. Make it a formal time of the day. If its informal, its easy to drift on to doing something else.
Setting a specific time and recording the activity you have done that day can also help set up the habit in your mind.
Sometimes people like journaling or keeping track of what they did, Polsgrove said.
Polsgrove and Graves both recognized that the lack of a social element is making working out extra challenging.
That social component is an important motivator, and thats especially challenging now because were being asked to avoid each other, Graves said. Given the requirement for social distancing its even harder now to get motivated to participate.
Finding a buddy to workout with you, even if it is virtually over video chat, will motivate you to stick to your plan to workout. Polsgrove said that he uses a similar tactic for his personal training clients.
When Im doing personal training with people I get them in a contract agreement [about] when are the days that you can exercise [and the] times of day, Polsgrove said. Create obligations that you and a friend are going to meet at a certain time.
Linda Coan O'Kresik | BDN
Katie Norwood, a trainer at Wilcox Wellness & Fitness in Bangor, counts down the time of an exercise for her clients during a virtual training session in April 2020.
When it comes to workout videos, Graves said that there are seemingly limitless possibilities online. He said that some yoga, pilates and other fitness instructors have moved classes online for a small subscription fee, but there are also a number of free resources.
Figuring out how to make exercise work for a sheltering-in-place is not only a good way to stay healthy now and for potential future lockdowns, but also to incorporate fitness back into your daily life in general.
It gives us strength and resolve for the future, trying to become more organized and have a better understanding of what exercise means to us, Polsgrove said. Creating a home routine that you can have when you arent able to go to the gym is meaningful [to have] for the future.

How the Big Ten is making mental health a growing priority – ESPN
Posted: at 9:42 am
Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren is taking the lead on mental health and making mindfulness for student-athletes a priority.
Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren speaks of mental fitness with the intent and enthusiasm of a motivational speaker. The message is powerful -- the message inherent in his decision to deliver it even more so. The first major public initiative of Warren's tenure as only the sixth Big Ten Conference commissioner is directed toward neither money nor academics, the poles that hold up the intercollegiate athletic tent.
It is the Mental Health and Wellness Cabinet, a group of 31 experts gathered from the league's 14 institutions, plus affiliate members Johns Hopkins and Notre Dame.
"This was one of my key pillars, even when I interviewed for the job," Warren said. "We just want to empower our student-athletes. This is all about the student-athletes, to tell how much we love, admire, respect, appreciate them, to give them the resources, that we're here, they can talk about it."
The conference that gave us the Ten-Year War, that produced Bob Knight and Herb Brooks, is now promoting mindfulness. And not without reason. The scourge of mental illness on American campuses has not spared student-athletes. Take the maelstrom of growing up in the social media age, blend in self-images that equate competitive failure with personal worth, and add relentless demands on time and energy.

The issues are not unique to the Big Ten. It may not be the death knell for the win-at-all-cost ethic that has defined American sports since Red Grange was in knee pants. But the campaign to champion mental fitness is a more tangible, less cynical reminder of the difference between intercollegiate athletics and the pros. The student-athletes whom we celebrate are not yet grown men and women.
In loco parentis, a phrase meaning "in the role of a parent," once was applied universally to colleges. The actions that universities took in loco parentis had a more disciplinary cant, such as single-sex dorms or curfews. The Big Ten mental fitness campaign hearkens to those simpler times, but with a motivation more compassionate than disciplinary.
Warren recalls what it is like to be young and adrift. He saw it among his fellow student-athletes when he played basketball at Penn and Grand Canyon. Actually, he experienced it long before he went to college. An automobile struck 11-year-old Kevin Warren when he was riding his bicycle.
He spent six weeks in the hospital. He spent seven months in a body cast.
"Not one time did anyone talk to me about my mental health, how did I feel," Warren said. "My sister stayed at the hospital many nights with me... She was telling me recently that I was having these night terrors throughout the night. I was just in the hospital, would scream at a level, they were so concerned. Even then, I never met with a mental health professional."
A generation later, there hasn't been enough change. Warren's son Powers plays football at Mississippi State.
I've heard too many stories of my son's friends, of college athletes around the country who've had issues," Warren said, "who've raised their hand, who sought out help on campus, and they were told, 'We can get you in six weeks from now.' We can't have 'six weeks.' You might as well tell someone, 'Call me in a year.' That can't happen."
The ubiquity of the Calm app, waiting when needed on a phone, will solve that issue, or at least provide a bandage until the psychic wound is tended. The conference purchased the use of the app for all 9,600 of its student-athletes, as well as league coaches and administrative personnel.
That isn't the cabinet's only strategy, just the first. There are plans afoot for a newsletter. Warren is smitten by the Bandana Project on the Wisconsin campus. Students with green bandanas tied to their backpacks are trained in the knowledge of mental health resources available on campus. The green bandana signifies not only a resource, but unspoken support. Warren learned about it in a cabinet session.
"We're all doing great work," Warren said of his league's institutions. "But we were doing them in silos. Now we're able to collaborate with each other, come up with best practices."
In the intercollegiate athletic world where so much is measured by money or metric, Warren said there are no such milestones for mental fitness. No one will be monitoring how many gymnasts or swimmers or tight ends use their Calm app. "It would be worth it if one person said, 'You stopped and made me think. You stopped and made me recognize that maybe I do need to go get some help,'" Warren said.
As intercollegiate athletics gropes its way blindly through the coronavirus pandemic, the Big Ten is seeing how its student-athletes and coaches really live. The conference once known for "three yards and a cloud of dust" has modernized its approach. The Big Ten hopes to learn how to be present.
