Venus Williams Eats Mostly Plant-Based or Vegan, and You Can Too – The Beet

Tennis star, businesswoman and all-around American icon Venus Williams says she eats a mostly vegan diet. It's something that she started back in 2011 when she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease calledSjogren's Syndrome; she realized that drastically changing her diet could help alleviate her symptoms.
Now 39, Williams says that being mostly plant-based or vegan helps herdial back the symptoms of debilitating joint pain and fatigue."I started eating raw and vegan for health reasons," Venus told Women's Health in a recent interview. "I needed to fuel my body in the best way possible."
Venus champion sister Serena Williams, and her husband Alexis Ohanian, both embrace a plant-based lifestyle as well. Ohanian said he does it to be a better father to their daughter Olympia, and he even joined an all-star lineup as executive producer of The Game Changers documentary about athletes who perform better on a plant-based diet.
Serena told Bon Appetit that she cleaned up her diet and started eating vegan when her sister Venus was diagnosed with Sjogren. She said that together, they learned to eat lots of raw foods and smoothies. While they do eat mostly plant-based foods, they both say they do cheat one in a while, calling themselves chegans recognizing they are not perfect and its ok to allow some room to be imperfect. "I try to make the majority of my meals raw and vegan, but Im only human and am known to cheat a little bit, says Serena.
So what does a day in the life of Venus vegan eating look like? Weve pulled out some of her go-to meals and snacks and created a short meal guide that will help you eat just like Venus.
Breakfast
Venus says she is not a morning person but keeps it light with a protein shake or smoothie. Especially since she trains in the morning, she doesn't want to eat a big meal. Serena also puts this into practice. Her husband Ohanian told GQ that his wife taught him the benefits of working out on an empty stomach to burn more fat and get more afterburn; he now follows his wife's lead and waits to refuel after.

Venus says she is often busy between training and business meetings and often needs something quick or that she can eat quickly. "Depending on how much time I have for lunch and what my schedule looks like, lunch can vary from sweet potatoes and rice to a green smoothie," she says.

"Im often running from multiple practices to meetings for EleVen or calls with my design company, V Starr, so I am always looking for little things that are easy to bring on-the-go," she explained to Womens Health. She says she grabs a bar from CLIF when super busy for a small-but-mighty quick fill-up. Venus also opts for snacks loaded with greens and veggies like kale chips, green juices and smoothies.

At night, Venus goes for a salad or something that is easy to whip up. Her go-to is a homemade vegan caesar salad. She also tries to keep it light on the sweets, especially when training but keeps it real admitting that sometimes a girl just needs a donut!" We second that Venus!

Venus Williams’ Diet Is Primarily Raw And Vegan, But She Calls Herself A ‘Chegan’ – Women’s Health

It's not an exaggeration to say Venus Williams, who went pro at 14-years-old, changed the face of tennisand she's not slowing down anytime soon.
Now 39, the tennis champion and entrepreneur (who has seven Grand Slam titles and two companies under her belt) continues to perform at an elite level on all fronts. These days, she puts most of her energy into her activewear line, EleVen, which is all about empowering women to kill it on and off the court.
How does Venus keep her endless hot streak going, though? She says her diet deserves a lot of the credit.
"I started eating raw and vegan for health reasons," Venus tells Women's Health. "I needed to fuel my body in the best way possible." (She's previously opened up about having Sjogren's syndrome, a rare autoimmune disease that comes with fatigue, muscles aches, and joint pain.) "Knowing how important a role my diet plays keeps me on track," she says.
Venus leaves room for a little flexibility, though. "I try to make the majority of my meals raw and vegan, but Im only human and am known to cheat a little bit. I joke that Im a 'chegan' because sometimes Ive been known to stray."
Here's exactly what the tennis legend eats to fuel her training and entrepreneurial ventures.
For Venus, mornings are focused on training. "Im not a morning person or a big breakfast eater," Venus tells Women's Health. "I do need some fuel to get me going, but find it hard to scarf down a big meal first thing when I wake up, so Ill usually have something light like fruit or a protein shake."

Since Venus' calendar is often jam-packed during the day, she switches up her lunch as needed, often opting for mobile meals like smoothies when time is tight. "Depending on how much time I have for lunch and what my schedule looks like, lunch can vary from sweet potatoes and rice to a green smoothie," she says.

"Eating is part of the job when Im competing, so I make sure to get some protein and carbs," she says. "After a match, Ill usually have a protein shake with a plant-based milk and protein powder and then eat a real meal shortly after."
Snacks (and lots of them!) also help Venus get through hectic days. "Im often running from multiple practices to meetings for EleVen or calls with my design company, V Starr, so I am always looking for little things that are easy to bring on-the-go," she says. "Clif Bars are great when Im super busy; they are small-but-mighty and fill me up quickly." (Venus is a Clif Bar athlete, but she's been a fan since long before the deal.)
Otherwise, Venus loads her snacks with greens and veggies. "You'll often find me snacking on kale chips in meetings," she says. "Green juice and smoothiesand protein shakes, if I'm coming straight from practiceare also my go-tos. I need foods that are tasty and convenient, but still pack a punch and keep me going, whether Im on the court or in a meeting."
In the evening, Venus usually goes for a salad. "For dinner, I love vegan Caesar salads because they are super easy," Venus told Women's Health. "I can whip it up quickly whether Im at home or in a hotel room at a tournament."
Venus isn't the only one on the vegan train. These other icons swear by eating only plants, too:
Venus' sweet tooth might rival her powerful swing, but she's found healthy swaps to satisfy it with. "When Im training I really try to practice self-control, but sometimes a girl just needs a donut!" she says. "I have found its easier to curb those cravings by finding foods that are still sweet but also healthy, like a juice or a smoothie." Okay, Venus may really be the smoothie queen.
One of her favorite smoothies: a "Green-Colada," which she makes with pineapple, canned coconut milk, coconut oil, a little vanilla flavoring, and kale. "Sometimes Ill have some fun and put a rum or prosecco floater on top," she says. "Work hard, play hard!"
Venus' ultimate eating MO: "It's all about moderation. Life is too short to not love what youre eating." Right on, Venus. Right on.

Black Radish Grocer, a small boutique and curated all-plant-based vegan grocery store, is now open in Tampas V.M. Ybor neighborhood.
The shop, located at 2923 N. 12th St., was using sanitized order lockers in March, but has since opened its doors for on-site shopping and added offering delivery for its customers.
Some of its most popular items include Beyond and Impossible meats, fancy cheeses (Wendys,Jules), seitan filets, Oopsy Daisy Vinkies and Stonewalls Jerquee snacks. Oh, and Follow Your Heart American cheese, too.
Black Radish says contactless pickup will be available indefinitely and is asking anyone who comes to shop in-person to be considerate. That means making distance between yourselves and others, wearing PPE as you see fit and doing your best to avoid touching products unless you plan on purchasing the item.
Well also only be accepting debit/credit transactions at this time to avoid handling cash, Black Radish wrote on social media.
The shop is closed for Memorial Day, but regular hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. More information is at blackradishgrocer.com or by phone (813-467-6496).

Fifteen plant-based burgers had their identities hidden and were served to a panel of testers at Good Housekeeping in the UK, with each burger being judged on its appearance, aroma, taste, and texture. The tested burgers came from several UK supermarkets as well as respected brands such as Vivera and Biona.
Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, in addition to winning Bronze at the Free From Awards 2020, Lidls W/O Meat Vegan Burger came number one in the Best Veggie Burger category. The burgers retail for just 1.99 and were regarded as superior to brands renowned for quality such as Waitrose and Marks and Spencer.
The Lidl burger scored 84/100 and came with these comments: An authentic meat substitute with a thick and juicy bite, we loved the earthy beetroot and mushroom flavour and the subtle kick from the light spices. A substantial size, it had a lovely smoky aroma akin to being char-grilled on a BBQ.

Boxinglegend Mike Tyson says hes in the best shape ever and credits hisvegan diet and rigorous exercise routine for making it happen. Over the last decade, Tyson has been plant-based andexplains how his vegan diet has completely changed his life for the better.
UPDATE: The New York Post just reported that Tyson might have a new chance to fight again. The former Champ is expected to be offered $20 million to spar in the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship. So that would certainly make staying in shape worth it.
After retiring in 2005, Tyson was eating meat and drinking alcohol on a regular basis, he tells an interviewer. He was diagnosedas clinically obese in 2009 and toldTotally Vegan Buzz, I was so congested from all the drugs and bad cocaine, I could hardly breathe."Tyson also revealed in the interview, I had high blood pressure, was almost dying, and had arthritis."
In 2010, Tysontransformed his diet and ditched the meat in favor of a plant-based lifestyle, which he has continued ever since. Her also is completely clean and sober now, something he is proud to tell fans. The former heavyweight champ says everything he is doing to change his life and turn his health around is for his kids and his wife.
The 53-year old warrior explains,"Turning vegan helped me eliminate all those problems in my life, and adds, "I'm in the best shape ever." This kind of statement from such an iconic sports figurethat he is in better shape now than when he was competing and fighting and collecting belts and endorsementsissure to get attention the world over andspur more plant-curious athletes to try it out.
Last week, Tysonposted an Instagram videoboxing with hisnew coach,MMA trainer Rafael Cordeiro, and showed off hismuscular bodywith fast-speedform that is helping him stay in shape during the lockdown.
Corderio also agrees that Tyson is in his best shape and complimentshis punches: "He has the same power as a guy who is 21, 22-years old."
The trainer said he wasn'tsure what to "expect from a guy who hasnt hit mitts for I think almost ten years," Corderio told TalkSport. During the boxing session, Tyson clips together powerful punches so we can see his greatest moments. His trainer notes, "I held his right hook and thought he is going to kill somebody. During an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2013, Tysoncredits his plant-based diet for saving his life. He shared, "Well, my life is different today because I have stability in my life. Im not on drugs. Im not out on the streets or in clubs and everything in my life that I do now is structured around the development of my life and my family. I lost weight. I dropped over 100lbs and I just felt like changing my life, doing something different and I became a vegan."
Becoming a vegan gave me another opportunity to live a healthy life. High blood pressure, almost dying, arthritis, and once I became a vegan all that stuff diminished.
Before getting too ahead of ourselves and predicting Tyson'sreturn to thering, hehopped on T.I's Instagramlive and hinted the idea.Ive been working out, Ive been trying to get in the ring, I think Im going to box some exhibitions and get in shape.
Tyson also said, I want to go to the gym and get in shape to be able to box three or four-round exhibitions for some charities and stuff." It's clear that othersshould be nervous about the idea of Tyson's return, like professional boxer Ryan Garciawho commented on one of Tyson's posts, saying, "I got scared when you said Im back ."
