Youll want to look for foods such as sweet potato, apricots, legumes, Brussels sprouts, flaxseeds, and grains like oatmeal. However, if you dont already eat a lot of this food, slowly increase your intake to avoid unwanted side-effects such as stomach cramps and bloating. Soluble fiber can also create good bacteria diversity in the gut, which in term can help ditch your belly fat.

Caffeine addicts unite! A cup of joe can help you lose your stubborn love handles. First up, caffeine can increase your metabolic rate, meaning you burn more calories, even at rest. It also gives you more energy and alertness because the caffeine blocks a neurotransmitter inhibitor called adenosine. By doing so, it allows the release of other neurotransmitters and hormones such as dopamine and norepinephrine, which make you feel awake. Then, it also stimulates the nervous system creating epinephrine, or adrenalin, which starts to break down fat. Consuming 100-400 mg of caffeine, or one to four coffees, per day will give you the benefits, without side effects like twitching or anxiety. However, because you still need to be at a calorie deficit for fat loss, try to drink your coffee black, or with only a splash of milk. Otherwise, excess sugar and dairy will negate any benefits.

Eggs are a bit of a superfood, especially when it comes to weight loss. Theyre chock-full of protein, choline, healthy fats, and essential vitamins and minerals. Like other forms of protein, eggs help to increase your metabolic rate and keep you feeling fuller for longer. Plus, large eggs contain only about 80 calories each, which is pretty low. Therefore, eating two or three eggs for breakfast with some veggies can set you up well for the day ahead for around 300 calories. They also make great snacks. You can keep hard-boiled eggs in the fridge with their shells on for up to a week. If you get peckish, its a healthier, more filling choice than a bag of chips or cookies. Finally, theyre also cheap, so if youre budget-conscious, its an excellent choice for an inexpensive protein.

While apple cider vinegar (ACV) is an ancient remedy for many maladies, its just as relevant today. Taking ACV every day can help reduce your appetite and lower blood sugar and insulin levels in diabetes patients. The main active ingredient, acetic acid, has shown increased fat burning and a decrease in belly fat storage in animal studies. While there are no studies in humans, its still promising news. Start by adding a teaspoon to a glass of water each morning, slowly working your way up to one or two tablespoons. Its a bit of an acquired taste, and if you jump in too hard too fast, it can cause stomach upset. ACV also has other handy uses, other than weight loss. Its brilliant in salad dressings, you can use it to get rid of dandruff, and it can help treat acne and foot bacteria.

Oolong tea, like green tea, has incredible health benefits. It contains both caffeine and catechins, which kicks your metabolism up a notch and helps promote weight loss. Some studies have found that oolong increased calorie burning twice as much as green tea, making it a great alternative. This tea is drunk black, which is great because you dont need to worry about added sugar or milk. The flavor can also be deeper and toastier than green tea, but not as intense as black tea.

Invest in some good quality olive oil for its versatile use, incredible taste, and health benefits. Its one of the healthiest fats around. Not only does it raise your good cholesterol, but it also stimulates the production of GLP-1, the fullness hormone. Additionally, it can boost your metabolic rate, so even when youre not doing much, youre still burning more energy. The easiest way to add it to your diet is to use it for cooking or add it to salad dressings. Put some ACV and olive oil in a container with some salt and pepper and give it a vigorous shake for a simple, at-home vinaigrette. Add extra herbs, garlic, or spice for an even better flavor.

Do you not feel motivated enough to work out every day? Do you feel that you lack the energy and stamina it takes to exercise? If yes, then you need a proper pre-workout routine that will help improve your performance and achieve your goals. We talked to Dr. Ashish Jain, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, P.D Hinduja Hospital & MRC, who also happens to be a fitness enthusiast, shared with us some tips to help you with your pre-workout routine.

Dr. Jain said, I believe that one must have a Workout Routine in place for the week to be able to effectively decide on the Pre-workout prep. A good weekly routine involves a mix of Cardio and Strength Training days with one or two days for rest and recovery. It is better to do cardio in a fasted state in the mornings, and strength training in the evenings when your body is well-fed and strong to lift.

1. Pre-workout nutrition

Fueling your body with the right nutrients prior to exercise will give you enough energy and strength you need to perform better. Cardio is best done fasted to ensure maximum fat utilization for energy unless one is into HIIT. However, for a good strength workout, one must eat a good meal at least an hour or more prior to training. Complex carbs like sweet potato or oats along with a protein is ideal to ensure sustained energy for the session, added Dr Jain. He recommends drinking black coffee half an hour before you exercise as it will help improve focus and energy levels.

2. Supplements

The use of supplements is common these days with people getting more enthusiastic about working out. These products are believed to enhance performance, improve strength, increase lean body and reduce fatigue.

These are optional boosters which can be used to enhance workout performance and results. Some of the commonly used are L-Carnitine, caffeine, L-Arginine or Citrulline, Creatine or a combination of the above as a pre-workout drink with or without a whey protein scoop, said Dr Jain. However, you must consult your doctor once before adding any of them in your diet.

3. Warm-up exercises

Dr. Jain explained that it is crucial to get your body and muscles warmed up and mobilized before you work out. It also helps to prevent injuries.

General Body warm-ups: Short burst of running or brisk walking, cycling, cross trainer or rowing. At home this could be knee-ups, jumping jacks or mountain climbers. These exercises raise your heart rate and get your sweat going.

Local body part warm-ups: Pull-ups far back, push-ups for chest, free squats for legs or rotator cuff movements for shoulders. These are essential to mobile the muscle groups to be trained that day and loosen up the involved joints.

If the different styles of yoga are layers, Hatha yoga is the base. The meditative, stress-busting practice hones in on many of the basic yoga postures, making it a perfect introduction for beginners.

But seasoned yogis can also benefit. Depending on the yoga instructor and the studio you visit, Hatha yoga classes can range from a constant flow to a slow, gentle class.

Hatha yoga is an umbrella term for physical practice, so other types of yoga, such as Ashtanga and Vinyasa, are all forms of Hatha yoga.

Hatha in Sanskrit is a combination of ha (sun) and tha (moon), and represents the union of two opposites. Hatha yoga is filled with a series of physical postures, or asanas, that both strengthen the body and improve flexibility.

Hatha yoga also allows practitioners to discover something deeper within themselves by creating balance and uniting opposites not only in their physical practice but also in their hearts and minds.

"The beauty of Hatha is that through the eight limbs of yoga, each individual is receiving their very own unique remedy to something they are needing in their own life at that time," Candy Glover, a yoga instructor based in Oxon Hill, Maryland, tells LIVESTRONG.com.

Those eight limbs of yoga that Glover refers to are yoga's principles for living a purposeful life, which are found in the yoga guidebook, Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali, from sage Sri Swami Satchidananda. They are:

What makes Hatha stand out is that it teaches you how to apply yoga principles in everyday life. For example, using your pranayama to do asanas helps strengthen the body-breath connection and trains you to sit in stillness.

"Balance is so hard to come by in our fast-paced culture," says Brandie Regaldo, a San Antonio-based yoga instructor and co-founder of SAY OM SA.

"From my personal experience of practicing and observing as a teacher, a Hatha class is often the first opportunity some people have to actually slow down and tune into their body and mind while reinvigorating themselves at the same time."

That said, many of the poses you'll encounter in Hatha yoga involve balancing and slow transitions between poses to really emphasize the breath. Expect seated and standing poses with twists and bends, so each side of your body is strengthened.

Practicing yoga regularly can increase flexibility and energy, improve muscle strength and tone and promote better respiration and weight loss, according to the American Osteopathic Association. And because many of the yoga poses in Hatha involve gradually moving from a seated to a standing position, you'll also work on your range of motion and joint mobility.

In fact, a May 2012 randomized controlled trial in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, which included 250 participants with osteoarthritis in the knee joints, found that those who did Hatha yoga in addition to pain treatment saw more improvement in walking and range of motion in the knee than those who did therapeutic exercises after pain treatment.

In Hatha yoga, you'll also do poses that incorporate both the upper- and lower-body muscles and limbs, so you'll develop greater body awareness and learn how to move more mindfully, which can promote good posture and flexibility. This is particularly helpful for people with stiff joints, as well as athletes who want to improve their performance.

"Through my Hatha yoga practice, I have developed increased flexibility, better air flow and breathing practices, a better meditative practice, as well as a deepened appreciation for my spirituality," Glover says.

A June 2015 study in Evidence-Based Complementary Medicine, which included 154 middle-aged Chinese adults, found that after 12 weeks of Hatha yoga, participants improved their flexibility and muscular strength and endurance.

One of the things you'll learn quickly in Hatha yoga is that your breath helps you not only transition between the poses, but mindful breathing also helps you perform new and difficult poses. This can easily be translated to life off the mat. When you're going through stressful moments, focusing on your breathing can help put your mind at ease.

"No matter where I am, how I'm feeling or what's going on, if I really take the time to check in with myself, there's always a way to bring more comfort, joy and acceptance into the moment," Regaldo says.

Regaldo also credits her Hatha yoga practice with helping her lose weight. "There are so many benefits to practicing Hatha yoga regularly, but the most dramatic benefit I've experienced was an 85-pound weight loss over the course of four years, which I have been able to keep off for 12 years," Regaldo says.

According to Harvard Health Publishing, just 30 minutes of Hatha yoga can burn anywhere between 120 to 178 calories, depending on your weight.

Still, Hatha yoga doesn't have the same calorie-burning power as cardio workouts. To lose weight, the Mayo Clinic recommends supplementing your Hatha yoga practice with regular activity like walking, running, cycling or swimming and a healthy, calorie-controlled diet.

Whether a Hatha yoga class is slower-paced or more vigorous is up to the instructor, but the most important thing is to breathe through the transitions of the poses and to move at your own pace.

Some poses you can expect to do in a Hatha yoga class are Child's pose, Mountain pose, Downward Facing Dog and a nice back warm-up that includes Tabletop and Cat-Cow. These are great basic poses for beginners to learn, but they also serve as reminders for more advanced yogis to return to simplicity when the body needs it.

While the instructor will give you a general time frame for staying in a pose, you can expect to hold poses for five to 10 breaths. If you're not able to do certain poses, don't be shy to ask for a modification.

Regaldo also emphasizes letting go of all expectations and encourages students to not be concerned with setting strict goals, such as vigorously working through the hour-long classes or trying to nail down all the poses.

"I invite you to use your time on the mat for self-exploration and inquiry in place of judgements and rules," Regaldo says. "Even five minutes of mindful movements and breathing can do wonders."

Since Hatha yoga is arguably the most popular form of the practice, many fitness studios and gyms offer classes.

Honeywell Wants To Show What Quantum Computing Can Do For The World – Forbes

The race for quantum supremacy heated up in June, when Honeywell brought to market the worlds highest performing quantum computer. Honeywell claims it is more accurate (i.e., performs with less errors) than competing systems and that its performance will increase by an order of magnitude each year for the next five years.

The beauty of quantum computing, says Tony Uttley, President of Honeywell Quantum Solutions, is that once you reach a certain level of accuracy, every time you add a qbit [the basic unit of quantum information] you double the computational capacity. So as the quantum computer scales exponentially, you can scale your problem set exponentially.

Uttley sees three distinct eras in the evolution of quantum computing. Today, we are in the emergent erayou can start to prove what kind of things work, what kind of algorithms show the most promise. For example, the Future Lab for Applied Research and Engineering (FLARE) group of JPMorgan Chase published a paper in June summarizing the results of running on the Honeywell quantum computer complex mathematical calculations used in financial trading applications.

The next era Uttley calls classically impractical, running computations on a quantum computer that typically are not run on todays (classical) computers because they take too long, consume too much power, and cost too much. Crossing the threshold from emergent to classically impractical is not very far away, he asserts, probably sometime in the next 18 to 24 months. This is when you build the trust with the organizations you work with that the answer that is coming from your quantum computer is the correct one, says Uttley.

The companies that understand the potential impact of quantum computing on their industries, are already looking at what it would take to introduce this new computing capability into their existing processes and what they need to adjust or develop from scratch, according to Uttley. These companies will be ready for the shift from emergent to classically impractical which is going to be a binary moment, and they will be able to take advantage of it immediately.

The last stage of the quantum evolution will be classically impossible"you couldnt in the timeframe of the universe do this computation on a classical best-performing supercomputer that you can on a quantum computer, says Uttley. He mentions quantum chemistry, machine learning, optimization challenges (warehouse routing, aircraft maintenance) as applications that will benefit from quantum computing. But what shows the most promise right now are hybrid [resources]you do just one thing, very efficiently, on a quantum computer, and run the other parts of the algorithm or calculation on a classical computer. Uttley predicts that for the foreseeable future we will see co-processing, combining the power of todays computers with the power of emerging quantum computing solutions.

You want to use a quantum computer for the more probabilistic parts [of the algorithm] and a classical computer for the more mundane calculationsthat might reduce the number of qbits needed, explains Gavin Towler, vice president and chief technology officer of Honeywell Performance Materials Technologies. Towler leads R&D activities for three of Honeywell's businesses: Advanced Materials (e.g., refrigerants), UOP (equipment and services for the oil and gas sector), and Process Automation (automation, control systems, software, for all the process industries). As such, he is the poster boy for a quantum computing lead-user.

In the space of materials discovery, quantum computing is going to be critical. Thats not a might or could be. It is going to be the way people do molecular discovery, says Towler. Molecular simulation is used in the design of new molecules, requiring the designer to understand quantum effects. These are intrinsically probabilistic as are quantum computers, Towler explains.

An example he provides is a refrigerant Honeywell produces that is used in automotive air conditioning, supermarkets refrigeration, and homes. As the chlorinated molecules in the refrigerants were causing the hole in the Ozone layer, they were replaced by HFCs which later tuned out to be very potent greenhouse gasses. Honeywell already found a suitable replacement for the refrigerant used in automotive air conditioning, but is searching for similar solutions for other refrigeration applications. Synthesizing in the lab molecules that will prove to have no effect on the Ozone layer or global warming and will not be toxic or flammable is costly. Computer simulation replaces lab work but ideally, you want to have computer models that will screen things out to identify leads much faster, says Towler.

This is where the speed of a quantum computer will make a difference, starting with simple molecules like the ones found in refrigerants or in solvents that are used to remove CO2 from processes prevalent in the oil and gas industry. These are relatively simple molecules, with 10-20 atoms, amenable to be modeled with [todays] quantum computers, says Towler. In the future, he expects more powerful quantum computers to assist in developing vaccines and finding new drugs, polymers, biodegradable plastics, things that contain hundred and thousands of atoms.

There are three ways by which Towlers counterparts in other companies, the lead-users who are interested in experimenting with quantum computing, can currently access Honeywells solution: Run their program directly on Honeywells quantum computer; through Microsoft Azure Quantum services; and working with two startups that Honeywell has invested in, Cambridge Quantum Computing (CQC) and Zapata Computing, both assisting in turning business challenges into quantum computing and hybrid computing algorithms.

Honeywell brings to the quantum computing emerging market a variety of skills in multiple disciplines, with its decades-long experience with precision control systems possibly the most important one. Any at-scale quantum computer becomes a controls problem, says Uttley, and we have experience in some of the most complex systems integration problems in the world. These past experiences have prepared Honeywell to show what quantum computing can do for the world and to rapidly scale-up its solution. Weve built a big auditorium but we are filling out just a few seats right now and we have lots more seats to fill, Uttley sums up this point in time in Honeywells journey to quantum supremacy.

A Q&A with Travis Humble

Travis Humble is a distinguished scientist and director of the Quantum Computing Institute at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The institute is a lab-wide organization that brings together all of ORNL's capabilities to address the development of quantum computers. Humble is also an academic, holding a joint faculty appointment at the University of Tennessee, where he is an assistant professor with the Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education. In the following Q&A, Humble gives CT his unique perspectives on the advancement of quantum computing and its entry into higher education curricula and research.

Mary Grush: Working at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a scientist and at the University of Tennessee as an academic, you are in a remarkable position to watch both the development of the field of quantum computing and its growing importance in higher education curricula and research. First, let me ask about your role at the Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education. The Bredesen Center draws on resources from both ORNL and UT. Does the center help move quantum computing into the realm of higher education?

Travis Humble: Yes. The point of the Bredesen Center is to do interdisciplinary research, to educate graduate students, and to address the interfaces and frontiers of science that don't fall within the conventional departments.

For me, those objectives are strongly related to my role at the laboratory, where I am a scientist working in quantum information. And the joint work ORNL and UT do in quantum computing is training the next generation of the workforce that's going to be able to take advantage of the tools and research that we're developing at the laboratory.

Grush: Are ORNL and UT connected to bring students to the national lab to experience quantum computing?

Humble: They are so tightly connected that it works very well for us to have graduate students onsite performing research in these topics, while at the same time advancing their education through the university.

Grush: How does ORNL's Quantum Computing Institute, where you are director, promote quantum computing?

Humble: As part of my work with the Quantum Computing Institute, I manage research portfolios and direct resources towards our most critical needs at the moment. But I also use that responsibility as a gateway to get people involved with quantum computing: It's an exciting area that's largely understaffed. There are far more opportunities than there are people currently qualified to approach quantum computing.

The institute is a kind of storefront through which people from many different areas of science and engineering can become involved in quantum computing. It is there to help them get involved.

Grush: Let's get a bit of perspective on quantum computing why is it important?

Humble: Quantum computing is a new approach to the ways we could build computers and solve problems. This approach uses quantum mechanics that support the most fundamental theories of physics. We've had a lot of success in understanding quantum mechanics it's the technology that lasers, transistors, and a lot of things that we rely on today were built on.

But it turns out there's a lot of untapped potential there: We could take further advantage of some of the features of quantum physics, by building new types of technologies.

That could help with the design of quantum computers

IN RAY BRADBURYs science-fiction story A Sound of Thunder, a character time-travels far into the past and inadvertently crushes a butterfly underfoot. The consequences of that minuscule change ripple through reality such that, upon the time-travellers return, the present has been dramatically changed.

The butterfly effect describes the high sensitivity of many systems to tiny changes in their starting conditions. But while it is a feature of classical physics, it has been unclear whether it also applies to quantum mechanics, which governs the interactions of tiny objects like atoms and fundamental particles. Bin Yan and Nikolai Sinitsyn, a pair of physicists at Los Alamos National Laboratory, decided to find out. As they report in Physical Review Letters, quantum-mechanical systems seem to be more resilient than classical ones. Strangely, they seem to have the capacity to repair damage done in the past as time unfolds.

To perform their experiment, Drs Yan and Sinitsyn ran simulations on a small quantum computer made by IBM. They constructed a simple quantum system consisting of qubitsthe quantum analogue of the familiar one-or-zero bits used by classical computers. Like an ordinary bit, a qubit can be either one or zero. But it can also exist in superposition, a chimerical mix of both states at once.

Having established the system, the authors prepared a particular qubit by setting its state to zero. That qubit was then allowed to interact with the others in a process called quantum scrambling which, in this case, mimics the effect of evolving a quantum system backwards in time. Once this virtual foray into the past was completed, the authors disturbed the chosen qubit, destroying its local information and its correlations with the other qubits. Finally, the authors performed a reversed scrambling process on the now-damaged system. This was analogous to running the quantum system all the way forwards in time to where it all began.

They then checked to see how similar the final state of the chosen qubit was to the zero-state it had been assigned at the beginning of the experiment. The classical butterfly effect suggests that the researchers meddling should have changed it quite drastically. In the event, the qubits original state had been almost entirely recovered. Its state was not quite zero, but it was, in quantum-mechanical terms, 98.3% of the way there, a difference that was deemed insignificant. The final output state after the forward evolution is essentially the same as the input state before backward evolution, says Dr Sinitsyn. It can be viewed as the same input state plus some small background noise. Oddest of all was the fact that the further back in simulated time the damage was done, the greater the rate of recoveryas if the quantum system was repairing itself with time.

The mechanism behind all this is known as entanglement. As quantum objects interact, their states become highly correlatedentangledin a way that serves to diffuse localised information about the state of one quantum object across the system as a whole. Damage to one part of the system does not destroy information in the same way as it would with a classical system. Instead of losing your work when your laptop crashes, having a highly entangled system is a bit like having back-ups stashed in every room of the house. Even though the information held in the disturbed qubit is lost, its links with the other qubits in the system can act to restore it.

The upshot is that the butterfly effect seems not to apply to quantum systems. Besides making life safe for tiny time-travellers, that may have implications for quantum computing, too, a field into which companies and countries are investing billions of dollars. We think of quantum systems, especially in quantum computing, as very fragile, says Natalia Ares, a physicist at the University of Oxford. That this result demonstrates that quantum systems can in fact be unexpectedly robust is an encouraging finding, and bodes well for potential future advances in the field.

MIP* = RE is not a typo. It is a groundbreaking discovery and the catchy title of a recent paper in the field of quantum complexity theory. Complexity theory is a zoo of complexity classes collections of computational problems of which MIP* and RE are but two.

The 165-page paper shows that these two classes are the same. That may seem like an insignificant detail in an abstract theory without any real-world application. But physicists and mathematicians are flocking to visit the zoo, even though they probably dont understand it all. Because it turns out the discovery has astonishing consequences for their own disciplines.

In 1936, Alan Turing showed that the Halting Problem algorithmically deciding whether a computer program halts or loops forever cannot be solved. Modern computer science was born. Its success made the impression that soon all practical problems would yield to the tremendous power of the computer.

But it soon became apparent that, while some problems can be solved algorithmically, the actual computation will last long after our Sun will have engulfed the computer performing the computation. Figuring out how to solve a problem algorithmically was not enough. It was vital to classify solutions by efficiency. Complexity theory classifies problems according to how hard it is to solve them. The hardness of a problem is measured in terms of how long the computation lasts.

RE stands for problems that can be solved by a computer. It is the zoo. Lets have a look at some subclasses.

The class P consists of problems which a known algorithm can solve quickly (technically, in polynomial time). For instance, multiplying two numbers belongs to P since long multiplication is an efficient algorithm to solve the problem. The problem of finding the prime factors of a number is not known to be in P; the problem can certainly be solved by a computer but no known algorithm can do so efficiently. A related problem, deciding if a given number is a prime, was in similar limbo until 2004 when an efficient algorithm showed that this problem is in P.

Another complexity class is NP. Imagine a maze. Is there a way out of this maze? is a yes/no question. If the answer is yes, then there is a simple way to convince us: simply give us the directions, well follow them, and well find the exit. If the answer is no, however, wed have to traverse the entire maze without ever finding a way out to be convinced.

Such yes/no problems for which, if the answer is yes, we can efficiently demonstrate that, belong to NP. Any solution to a problem serves to convince us of the answer, and so P is contained in NP. Surprisingly, a million dollar question is whether P=NP. Nobody knows.

The classes described so far represent problems faced by a normal computer. But computers are fundamentally changing quantum computers are being developed. But if a new type of computer comes along and claims to solve one of our problems, how can we trust it is correct?

Imagine an interaction between two entities, an interrogator and a prover. In a police interrogation, the prover may be a suspect attempting to prove their innocence. The interrogator must decide whether the prover is sufficiently convincing. There is an imbalance; knowledge-wise the interrogator is in an inferior position.

In complexity theory, the interrogator is the person, with limited computational power, trying to solve the problem. The prover is the new computer, which is assumed to have immense computational power. An interactive proof system is a protocol that the interrogator can use in order to determine, at least with high probability, whether the prover should be believed. By analogy, these are crimes that the police may not be able to solve, but at least innocents can convince the police of their innocence. This is the class IP.

If multiple provers can be interrogated, and the provers are not allowed to coordinate their answers (as is typically the case when the police interrogates multiple suspects), then we get to the class MIP. Such interrogations, via cross examining the provers responses, provide the interrogator with greater power, so MIP contains IP.

Quantum communication is a new form of communication carried out with qubits. Entanglement a quantum feature in which qubits are spookishly entangled, even if separated makes quantum communication fundamentally different to ordinary communication. Allowing the provers of MIP to share an entangled qubit leads to the class MIP*.

It seems obvious that communication between the provers can only serve to help the provers coordinate lies rather than assist the interrogator in discovering truth. For that reason, nobody expected that allowing more communication would make computational problems more reliable and solvable. Surprisingly, we now know that MIP* = RE. This means that quantum communication behaves wildly differently to normal communication.

In the 1970s, Alain Connes formulated what became known as the Connes Embedding Problem. Grossly simplified, this asked whether infinite matrices can be approximated by finite matrices. This new paper has now proved this isnt possible an important finding for pure mathematicians.

In 1993, meanwhile, Boris Tsirelson pinpointed a problem in physics now known as Tsirelsons Problem. This was about two different mathematical formalisms of a single situation in quantum mechanics to date an incredibly successful theory that explains the subatomic world. Being two different descriptions of the same phenomenon it was to be expected that the two formalisms were mathematically equivalent.

But the new paper now shows that they arent. Exactly how they can both still yield the same results and both describe the same physical reality is unknown, but it is why physicists are also suddenly taking an interest.

Time will tell what other unanswered scientific questions will yield to the study of complexity. Undoubtedly, MIP* = RE is a great leap forward.

The Indiana University Board of Trustees has approved six new degrees, four of which are graduate level.

All of the new graduate degrees are on the Bloomington campus:

Also approved were a Bachelor of Arts in theater, film and television at IUPUI and a Bachelor of Science in accounting at IU East.

The master's and doctoral degrees in biostatistics are offered by the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the School of Public Health-Bloomington. They will focus on rural public health issues and specialized areas in public health research, such as the opioid epidemic.

Biostatistics is considered a high-demand job field. Both degrees are intended to meet the labor market and educational and research needs of the state, which is trying to reduce negative health outcomes. Biostatisticians typically are hired by state and local health departments, federal government agencies, medical centers, medical device companies and pharmaceutical companies, among others.

The Master of Science in quantum information science will involve an intensive, one-year, multidisciplinary program with tracks that tie into physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, engineering and business. It's offered through the Office of Multidisciplinary Graduate Programs in the University Graduate School. The degree was proposed by the College of Arts and Sciences, the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering, and the Kelley School of Business.

Most of the faculty who will teach the classes are members of the newly established IU Quantum Science and Engineering Center.

Students who earn the Master of Science in quantum information science can pursue careers with computer and software companies that are active with quantum computation, and national labs involved in quantum information science, among other opportunities.

The Master of International Affairs is a joint degree by the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the Hamilton-Lugar School of Global and International Studies. The degree is the first of its kind offered by any IU campus and meets student demand for professional master's programs having an international focus.

Featured components of the degree include the study of international relations and public administration. Graduates can expect to find employment in the federal government, such as the Department of State, the Department of Treasury or the U.S. intelligence community, or with private-sector firms in fields such as high-tech, global trade and finance.

The Bachelor of Arts in theater, film and television combines existing programs and provides them a more visible home in the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. The degree features three distinct concentrations:

Applied theater is a growing field that emphasizes and works with organizations around issues of social justice, social change, diversity and inclusion.

IU East's Bachelor of Science in accounting degree, offered through the School of Business and Economics, helps meet projected high demand in the accounting industry. It also will prepare students to take the certified public accountant or certified managerial accountant exams, or enter graduate programs in accounting or business.
