Kentucky Derby has 21 horses entered, 1 above max

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A total of 21 horses have been entered for Saturday's Kentucky Derby, one more than the maximum allowed field of 20.
The entry box closed Wednesday morning, with the draw to determine post positions set for later in the afternoon. The field is limited to the top 20 horses based on earnings in graded stakes races.
Leading the way is Bodemeister, the dominant winner of the Arkansas Derby and one of two horses in the field trained by Bob Baffert. He also has Liaison.
Todd Pletcher also will saddle two - Wood Memorial winner Gemologist and Risen Star winner El Padrino.
Michael Matz, who won the 2006 Derby with Barbaro, trains Fountain of Youth winner Union Rags.
Optimizer will be the record 45th Derby starter for trainer D. Wayne Lukas, a four-time winner of the race. The colt got into the field when Mark Valeski was withdrawn from consideration Tuesday.
The 21st horse on the earnings list is My Adonis, an also eligible who would need a defection to get into the 1 1/4-mile race.
Other entries for the 138th Derby are Withers winner Alpha, San Felipe winner Creative Cause, UAE Derby winner Daddy Long Legs, Sunland Derby winner Daddy Nose Best, Illinois Derby winner Done Talking, Blue Grass winner Dullahan, Gotham winner Hansen, and Santa Anita Derby winner I'll Have Another.
The rest of the entries are Tampa Bay Derby winner Prospective, Rousing Sermon, Sabercat, Florida Derby winner Take Charge Indy, Bay Shore winner Trinniberg, and Spiral Stakes winner Went the Day Well.

I had the pleasure of visiting William Broad at the Times today. He kindly gave me the tour, and showed me the Pulitzer wall, which he was on for a group prize in 1986. We even had some hang time in the cafeteria to chat about neuroscience, yoga injuries, the wacky yoga scene, human nature, and other top secret undercover stories.
I was most impressed by his actual desk, which was buried under piles of wacky science books and stacks of papers. Couldn't have been staged better. The office has walls of books, giving off the vibe that only paper books can: peaceful space for clarity, endless information luring original thought and creativity. The whole place is super-expansive by design and feeling, idyllic for focused streams of consciousness. My one complaint: no non-dairy milk options in the cafeteria! Let's get almond milk over to the Times people!
There are fish bowl gardens set up for external viewing but not to be entered. I've always wondered about these outdoor/indoor spaces with restrictions. My old apartment building also had a nice glassed-in nature area permitting no visitors for viewing or reflection; only the gardener was allowed in, on occasion, to pull weeds.
I have a big soft spot for the Times and massive respect for its tornado power. Lizette Alvarez gave me a huge and powerful gift. She sent me a general email through my website last year asking if she could interview me for an article on yoga. Now I read the paper, I had seen the small articles they publish weekly on yoga in the Stretch column hidden on a lower part of a page, and was grateful they had decided it was my turn. After she had hung around for a few days, I asked her if she had everything she needed. She said she spoke with her editor and decided to turn my story into a cover story. I was beyond nervous and excited, but more nervous.
Rebel Yoga was the most emailed and viewed article in the whole paper for a while, and burst open a small flood of other pieces on yoga. Yoga was officially here to stay, and now it didn't need its guru anymore.
Most of you, if you keep up with my ongoings, know that I invited William to have a public chat at the SOHO Apple store for the launch of Yoga Cures. (Have a listen to the podcast!) I thought a conversation would be more interesting than just me up there blabbing about my book and how awesome yoga is to a crowd of people who probably, hopefully, already practice yoga.
William has some serious yoga-people-haters, steaming about the topics covered in his book, The Science of Yoga, The Risks and the Rewards, where he actually concludes -- if you take the time to read the book and not headlines -- that the rewards outweigh the risks. I have had my fair share of yoga-people-haters over time too, so I have a soft spot for William there. I've learned that if you don't have anyone opposing your work, if you don't have anyone thinking "man that should be me, I could do that, I should have thought of that, or they must have teams of people doing it for them," your work simply isn't reaching enough people to be relevant.
To twist Mr. Broad's yoga-people-haters in a bind, S.O.Y carries no actual opinions about yoga. Getting to know Mr. Broad, his actual opinion is that yoga is wonderful, powerful stuff that everyone should practice with ease. He is so passionate when he speaks about his home practice and his physical limitations and the incredible benefits of stress relief, clarity, creativity and focus.
S.O.Y. reads comparatively to Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food, telling the windy tale of the history of yoga, the scandals through the times, and a lot of the not-so-talked-about topics that have gone down through past and modern history of yoga. You know, the stuff that no one likes to talk about. Insert yoga-community backlash, a movement of people actually coming out and speaking out about their negative experiences with yoga, pushy teachers, power-hungry gurus, and the scandals go on and on. He even has a bunch of stuff on me in there! And not so much to my surprise, he criticizes some of the marketing claims of my first book, Slim Calm Sexy Yoga, which were out of my hands and against my wishes at the time. That's another can of worms and a piece of my own history. On the metabolism issue however, if you have a listen to the podcast, a Strala regular inquired about her boost in metabolism and newly-acquired muscle mass that she has put on since her regularity at the studio. Confirmed by an actual doctor at the talk, another Strala regular: Added muscle mass does increase metabolic rate. So it all depends on how you practice. Yoga has massive benefits when you practice with ease.

In this second part of a series, Irene Leong offers four yoga steps for the upper body, as demonstrated by mYoga instructor Angel Ng.
Cat Cow 1 Start with the easy pose. Sit comfortably in your seat, close your eyes, take a deep breath and relax. Place your hands by your side on the seat, with palms facing down. Straighten your arms and engage the muscles. Bend your body forward until the head touches the knees. Inhale slowly as you arch your spine upwards and lift your chin and head back. Then slowly exhale as you round your back, bring your chin to the chest, and the head to the knees. Repeat three times.
Cat Cow 2 Still sitting comfortably in your seat, cross your arms and use your hands to palm the shoulders. Then follow the breathing process in Cat Cow 1. Repeat three times. This step aims to improve the flexibility of the spine.
Marichyasana C variation 1 Slide out of the seat a little, leaving some space between your back and the seat. Place your feet firmly on the ground, aligned to the hips. Keep your spine straight. Lift your arms up as you inhale to lengthen the front part of your body, and fold your body halfway forward as you exhale.
Marichyasana C variation 2 Still in the same variation, after putting your hands down, continue by placing your right leg over your left thigh. Place your right hand behind your back while the left hand pulls the left knee. Lift and lengthen your lower spine as you inhale, and twist your body to the right as you exhale. Look over the right shoulder and do a gentle twist of the spine. Repeat for the other leg.

Yoga: Avoid Beginners Mistakes
While Attaining a Well of Happiness
Yoga has become a popular option for alternative health management. Research has shown the practice can significantly reduce mental and physical stress, improve mood, and slow the aging process.
But some yogis believe many of the estimated 20 million U.S. students are missing the best part of the discipline the inner happiness attainable through a healthy mind-body connection. They also worry about injuries that result when beginners tackle poses and exercises without proper guidance.
There are several disciplines of yoga, and with its rich history, the beginner can easily get lost or worse injured, says Mary Jo Ricketson, an experienced yoga practitioner and healthcare specialist, and author of Moving Meditation (www.thegoodwithin.com). A registered nurse, she also holds a masters degree in education from Northwestern University.
What I detail in my book is a comprehensive approach for both mind and body. This reciprocal relationship maximizes health benefits, and has exponentially positive consequences beyond the individual.
People have been practicing yoga for thousands of years, she says. In the West, the practice has integrated with our culture leading to variations including extreme yoga. Ricketson warns this sort of exercise can alienate beginners, who may not be ready to jump in the deep end first. Without the proper training and guidance, she adds, beginners risk injuring their neck, lower back, knees and shoulders.
The most important step is getting started, Ricketson says. Here are seven things beginners and anyone practicing yoga should know to maximize their benefits:
1.Cardiovascular (aerobic) training: As with meditation, focused breathing is a cornerstone of mind-body training. Aerobic means with oxygen and aerobic movement increases the flow of oxygen-rich blood throughout the body, including the brain. Cardiovascular training is the single most important aspect of the physical training because it keeps the heart open and strong.
2.Core and strength training: This includes the students abdomen and buttocks, and the lower back region, which extends to the base of the skull. Here is where strength, stability and balance originate.

Chris Brinckerhoff used to think nothing of sleeping in the same hotel room as teen girls while helping coach the Diamond Dolls travel softball team. Parents preferred the cost-friendly arrangement knowing their children were in good hands.
A decade later, Brinckerhoff wouldn't consider such a scenario.
She suspects the 24-hour news cycle created by the Internet and social networks have spotlighted the existence of sexual predators. That focus has made coaches, concerned over being perceived as a pedophile by parents, other adults or children, careful in their dealings with kids.
Coaches talk about sticking to fist bumps and high-fives. Most coaches wouldn't even consider the once-acceptable congratulatory smack on the butt. The climate makes coaches leery of how an innocent hug could be perceived by witnesses. Their means of affection essentially have been reduced to hand-to-hand contact the handshake, the fist bump, the high-five.
Brinckerhoff, the assistant superintendent of the Middletown Recreation and Parks Department, helps oversee more than 1,000 kids involved in sports camps and various other activities throughout the year. She holds up a multiple-sheet directive from the state outlining procedures the department must follow to help prevent and deal with issues involving children.
Brinckerhoff and fellow employees in the department must attend an orientation that encompasses dealing with kids victimized physically, emotionally or sexually what to look for, and what to do when problems arise. She said she fields about one child-related issue per year, but has never had a coach/child complaint sexual in nature.
Background checks commonly are used as a deterrent. But they generally only weed out folks convicted of crimes. They can't fix a whole other set of issues between children and even the best-intended counselors, many of whom are teens and young adults. Alluding to the pre-teen crowd, generally 10- to 12-year-old girls, Brinckerhoff said, "Kids make up stuff.'' It can be the interpretation of actual contact between the counselor and child say an accidental bump during a game or something fabricated by the child. Brinckerhoff said her office occasionally deals with cases of kids letting their imaginations run wild. She discusses such accusations with the counselor and child, as well as the child's parents.

John Wright has opted to announce his resignation as New Zealand coach after failing to see eye-to-eye with director of coaching John Buchanan.
Wright's current contract is due to expire after the tour to the West Indies - with New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White having offered the former opener a new deal.
However Wright claims differences of opinion with Buchanan were a key factor in his decision to turn down the extension.
"I think he's probably in a better position to do that," Wright said. "We're probably not that different, we just see things a little differently.
"As I explained earlier, the planning systems that John wants to implement are probably suited to another head coach. I think it's just a difference of style. We see things very differently. I wish him and everyone else success.
"I never really envisaged going through to the 2015 Cricket World Cup, so the change has to be made at some stage.
"During the review process with the current cricket director, we both agreed the planning systems that he (Buchanan) wants to implement don't complement the style and the way I coach, so that was another factor.
"It's part of sport. I've enjoyed the opportunity to coach the New Zealand cricket team."
During his tenure, Wright led New Zealand to the semi-finals of the ICC World Cup as well as a first Test success in Australia for 26 years.
And White hailed the impact Wright has had on the side.

Another assistant coaching change

A Louisville Courier-Journal report says Kareem Richardson will be named a Louisville assistant today. Richardson will replace Richard Pitino, whos now at Florida International.
Richardson leaves Xavier after one year with the program. He missed 10 games because of a collapsed left lung that required four surgeries.
His departures creates a second staff opening following Rasheen Davis move to Manhattan College. Its been quite a state of flux in the last week with these two announcements, plus the Mark Lyons news, but all three originated for different reasons/opportunities.
Louisvilles news conference is at 3 p.m. today.In the meantime, heres a look back at the story I wrote on Richardson when he returned from the lung crisis.
As Xavier mens basketball assistant coach Kareem Richardson readied himself for the Nov. 15 game against IPFW, he couldnt shake the odd feeling in his upper body.
He chalked it up to heartburn but found the malaise worsening during the Musketeers win.
It was my scout and I was trying to stand up and give instructions and match-ups for guys, and I was getting really short of breath and light-headed, Richardson said.
Team doctors urged him to visit the hospital afterward. Richardson did only to learn he had a collapsed left lung, setting in motion a chain of events that included four surgeries and 12 days in the hospital.
Richardson emerged from the health crisis sore, tired and 20 pounds lighter, but the 37-year-old Evansville graduate said he gained a new perspective during the 10 games he missed. He returned to Cintas Center following the Muskies Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii with a greater appreciation of work-life balance.

Wayne Smith turns down offer of coaching role with Stuart Lancaster and England

The third one is having put the last eight years of my life into coaching the All Blacks and trying to win the World Cup, I'm going to have to search inside myself to see whether I could coach a team against them, Smith said.
Its not just going to any team, it's going to a team that over time will potentially challenge the All Blacks, so I've got to be clear in my mind that I could be a part of that.
Smiths decision to turn down England leaves Lancaster still searching for a permanent backs coach ahead of next months tour of South Africa.
The Rugby Football Union today confirmed that Mike Catt will join England's coaching staff for next month's tour as interim backs coach, having signed a two-month deal. Jon Callard and Simon Hardy will also join the coaching team for the three-Test tour.
Catt will join Stuart Lancaster's backroom team next week after completing his duties with London Irish after their final Aviva Premiership match against Gloucester on Saturday.
Lancaster said: Mike has played at the top level and is highly respected. He has done a great job at whilst coaching at London Irish and we are looking forward to working with him on this South Africa tour. He is experienced in playing in South Africa and this will be invaluable as we prepare for this challenging and exciting tour.
While Mike, Graham Rowntree and myself will lead on the coaching for the tour we will also have Jon Callard and Simon Hardy as part of the coaching team. Jon and Simon know the players well from their roles with the Saxons.
They will assist in the preparation and support to the midweek teams and they will provide excellent specialist support in their individual areas with Jon supporting our kickers and Simon our hookers throughout the whole squad.
Catt said he was hugely excited about the prospect of joining Lancasters coaching team.
I was very impressed with England during the Six Nations, not just the way they played but the culture that is developing, and hopefully I can complement what Stuart and Graham are doing. There are some talented young players coming through and the chance to work with them for the Barbarians game and the tour is really exciting.
