Sahaja Yoga confers good health, busts stress: Australian study

Calcutta News.Net Tuesday 12th June, 2012 (IANS)

Sahaja Yoga founded by Mata Nirmala Devi, that is gaining greater acceptance worldwide for calming the mind and busting stress, contributes to promoting mental and physical health, according to a new study conducted in Australia.

The essence of Sahaja Yoga, described as mental silence, is much more than mere tranquillity, having several dimensions, including medically beneficial ones, Ramesh Manocha, senior lecturer of psychiatry at the University of Sydney Medical School, told IANS from Australia.

"We found that the health and well-being profile of people who had meditated for at least two years was significantly higher in the majority of health and well-being categories when compared to the (general) population," says Manocha.

Manocha was referring to his latest study on Sahaja Yoga, which focussed on meditation as mental silence, involving more than 348 people, conducted with colleagues Deborah Black and Leigh Wilson at the Sydney Medical School.

Fifty-two percent of the volunteers experienced mental silence "several times per day or more" while 32 percent were experiencing it "once or twice per day", according to Manocha, who is at the forefront of research into meditative disciplines.

"Our survey also demonstrated that practitioners had not only better mental and physical health but also a consistent relationship between health, especially mental health, and self-reported experience of mental silence," says Manocha.

Elaborating on mental silence, Manocha says: "As one learns to slow down the thoughts, the practitioner will start to perceive a small gap between each thought. With practice and by applying specific techniques, the meditator can widen the gap so that he experiences a thought or two and then a space of silence and then another thought or two."

"In this way, the gap between thoughts can be widened until there are long moments of no thoughts. Ultimately, the thoughts stop completely and the meditator remains fully alert and aware, but experiencing no thinking activity. This is 'mind emptiness' or mental silence of Sahaja Yoga," he said.

Bubba eyes second Major at US Open

Posted: at 10:17 am

Mon, 11 Jun 22:31:00 2012

Bubba Watson knew his private life would never be the same again after he won the Masters in April. Now he will discover whether his golf game is any different when he tees off at the US Open on Thursday.

The American has never been one for convention, a trait that has endeared him to the huge galleries that hoot and holler every time he swings the club.

Self-taught, Watson relies on his instinct and imagination rather than any coaching manual to get around a golf course.

"I just play golf because I love it. I love the surprise of the different shots," he said before the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio, two weeks ago, his final warm-up for the July 14-17 US Open.

"I hit in the trees a lot, so I try to make it through those gaps. I'm just having fun with the game of golf and if people love it, that's great."

Watson's unorthodox style paid off big at Augusta National in April when the left-hander pulled off a miraculous approach shot from the rough to beat South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen in a playoff to win his first major championship.

Already a cult figure on the greens, his stunning Masters victory catapulted him into a whole new world and he has spent the past two months juggling his golf game with everything from appearances on TV talk shows, being presented with the keys to the city of his hometown and changing diapers.

"There is a lot of stuff still going on in my life," said Watson, who along with his wife Angie adopted a one-month-old boy named Caleb in March. "Dealing with a major championship is a totally different level.

"You dream of winning a major championship, but then actually pulling it off, you don't know how to deal with it."

Fitness day launched by Weston

Posted: at 10:16 am

MP John Weston launched National Health and Fitness Day in Whistler on Saturday, June 2, following his running of the North Face Half Marathon, and held aloft a torch which is emblematic of the day's legacy.

June 12, 2012

On Saturday June 2, local MP John Weston inaugurated National Health and Fitness Day with events in Whistler, Squamish, Lions Bay and West Vancouver.

Weston, MP for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country, took the opportunity to announce that he will bring a private members' bill in the fall to legislate the establishment of this national day.

The bill has already received broad support from both sides of the House.

Weston intends for the day to celebrate the many indoor and outdoor opportunities available for Canadians to maintain good health, to encourage all those who make health and well-being a part of their lives, and to motivate all Canadians to take steps to improve their general level of fitness.

What a thrill it was to stand in Olympic Plaza in Whistler and announce the first official observance of National Health and Fitness Day, said Weston in a news release. We live in the riding that I refer to as the most beautiful place on earth, in the best nation on earth, with countless options for physical activity and enjoyment. With the private member's bill this fall, I hope this day becomes a healthy habit as Canada becomes the fittest nation on earth.

Weston began the day by running the North Face Half Marathon in Whistler before travelling to the Farmers' Market in Squamish to sample some healthy, organic fare. He then played doubles with the Tennis Group in Lions Bay before hiking the new Centennial Trail. The day concluded in West Vancouver, where Weston held high a torch and spoke of the legacy of this day.

The health day has developed from the MP's Parliamentary Fitness Initiative for parliamentarians and senators on the Hill, which offers professional instruction each week for running and swimming. From there, the initiative grew to include every one of the 12 local governments in the riding.

Retirement Age Must Rise, Says OECD

Posted: at 10:16 am

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) As life expectancy continues to rise, a new report suggests that governments need to raise the age of retirement in order to keep up.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development said that by 2050, the average woman and man can expect to live roughly 24 and 20 years beyond retirement age respectively, up from 20 and 17 years in 2010. At the same time, retirement ages across many countries have stayed the same.

Without a change, the OECD said governments wont be able to pay for more people needing retirement funds for longer periods of time.

Extending working lives in a situation of slowly growing or declining workforces should provide an important boost to economic growth in aging economies, according to the report, which was released Monday.

The United States could use a boost. Social Security has already begun paying out more in benefits than it takes in from workers payroll taxes. The trustees of the Social Security program reported in April that the program projects a $165 billion deficit in 2012. Social Security could pay promised benefits in full through 2033, the report said.

Raising the full retirement age gradually to 70 years-old could help plug this deficit by reducing Social Security outlays by 13 percent, the Congressional Budget Office reported in January.

With the fact that people are living longer, they should be partly responsible for meeting the cost of longer life expectancy, said Juan Yermo, head of the private pensions unit at OECD.

Today, the full retirement age in the United States is 66, up from 65 a decade ago. It is scheduled to increase by two months a year starting in 2017 until it reaches 67 in 2022. Meanwhile, 62 remains the age at which those who retire early can collect a percentage of their full benefits.

The OECD suggested, however, that 67 or higher is becoming the new 65.

Extending the period over which youre contributing to the pension system would be less of a burden for everyone, Yermo said.
