Virtual hit leads to real world success

Posted: at 12:21 am

Two ex-Disney staffers aim to grab the top slot in children's online games.

The internet entrepreneur Phil Mason shows galactic ambition when he talks about his online children's game, Little Space Heroes.

''We plan to be the number one market leader in this space, ahead of Disney,'' says the 40-year-old founder of the Sydney start-up, Bubble Gum Interactive.

Judging by the third-party funding and grants that his business has secured, it is clear that Mason, a former online executive with Disney, has convinced investors that his lofty aims are achievable.

Mason is tapping into the lucrative market for internet games for children as young as six, while treading carefully around parents' concerns about their children's online ventures.

Bubble Gum Interactive launched Little Space Heroes, a virtual universe in which children can play online, late last year. Today, the company says children in more than 50 countries log in to the game, with a new player signing up every 10 seconds at weekends. The start-up is staying mum on its total membership, but expects to reach about 20 million users by the end of 2013.

''We've seen the huge potential for virtual worlds for kids because there are 250 million kids worldwide aged six to 12 who have access to the internet, and that number is growing,'' says the company's marketing and community director, and former Disney employee, Paul Gray.

The game revolves around a colourful science fiction story: a villain robot, who is afraid of the dark, has begun pillaging the heroes' galaxy for light. Players are invited to become space cadets to find him and rescue the universe, making friends along the way.

The site works on a ''freemium'' model. Children can create their own heroes and play for free. A $6 monthly membership allows them to personalise their looks, upgrade their spaceships, have little critters and access some member-only zones and online parties.

Zumba Beat Helps Keep Residents Fit

Posted: June 17, 2012 at 11:21 pm

Posted: Jun. 17, 2012 | 2:04 a.m.

Chances are, everyone in the Las Vegas Valley knows someone who is taking Zumba fitness classes. At the Zumba.com website, 554 classes are listed within 25 miles of Las Vegas. Classes are offered at fitness and athletic clubs, gyms, YMCAs, senior centers, Strip hotels, schools, dance studios and even Opportunity Village.

Zumba is the current big thing in fitness. In the mid-1990s, a Colombian named Alberto "Beto" Perez forgot his aerobics music when scheduled to teach an aerobics class. He improvised using his personal collection of Latin music and found his class had new energy. An idea was born.

Zumba came to the United States in 2001. Fitness classes with a party atmosphere and lots of rhythmic Latin music have since spread to 110,000 locations in 125 countries. DVDs are available, as is Zumbawear and even a Zumba-branded video game.

According to Bret Fitzgerald, vice president of corporate communications for Las Vegas Fitness Clubs, Zumba classes are the most popular classes his organization offers. One student noted that some classes are so crowded, participants are urged to arrive a half-hour early to "get a good spot."

Although most Zumba classes in the Las Vegas Valley follow the basic fitness format, an instructor can be licensed in eight different levels of classes, including classes geared specifically to the active older adult, classes for children ages 4 to 12 and even water-based workouts using the Zumba formula.

Local entertainer Elisa Fiorillo, currently on tour as a backup singer with Prince, says Zumba classes are the only workouts she enjoys. Fiorillo was on a seven-day-a-week Zumba schedule before going on tour.

"I'm happy when I'm in class. I get lost in the music," she says. "Also, the more I can develop my lung capacity, the better I can sing and move onstage."

The teacher who first sold Fiorillo on Zumba fitness is 74-year-old Ginny Jones, almost a legend at the Las Vegas Athletic Clubs, having taught for them since 1984. Jones is a former ballet student, skater with the Ice Capades and the "Lido" shows in Paris and Las Vegas, a dancer in Las Vegas shows such as "Viva Les Girls" at the former Dunes and an aerobics teacher.

Jones typically teaches eight classes a day at the Green Valley Las Vegas Athletic Club. Her schedule recently was affected by a tendon issue. "Such a bother," says the tiny blonde, still retaining a hint of her British accent. "I teach a number of different classes, but Zumba fitness is by far the most popular. We typically have classes of 60 to 70 people."

Ex-KU aide Barry Hinson sets out on coaching comeback at SIU

Posted: at 2:16 pm

Endless smiles. Quick one-liners. Southern-fried charm. An encouraging word and a drop of wisdom for everyone who crossed his path. Bill Selfs close friend Barry Hinson showed that face to the public during his four years in Lawrence working for the Kansas University athletic department in the wake of his unjust firing by Missouri State.

Now that hes back in the ranks of head coach, hired March 28 by Southern Illinois University, Hinson reveals that was his poker face Lawrence saw. Behind it, a bruise stretched from head to heart to gut.

There were probably only three people in Lawrence who knew how much it bothered me and how much it hurt me, Hinson said by phone from his new office in Carbondale, Ill. My wife, Angie, coach Self and Cindy Self.

Hinson didnt hide his true feelings when interviewed by the SIU search committee charged with finding a replacement for Chris Lowery. After nearly two hours of answering questions, Hinson was asked if he had any himself. He said he had one question and then a statement.

The question: Im going to ask you guys if you have any concerns with me because I got fired.

Hinson said it was quiet until one member said if they had concerns he would not be standing in front of them.

The statement: Im not damaged goods. We won at Missouri State. We didnt have any violations. We graduated our student-athletes. And we had the third-best record in the Missouri Valley (Conference) in my nine years. Im not damaged goods. If you hire me, youre going to hire a guy who comes into this conference extremely upset.

Hinson said he grew very emotional during that point of the interview.

Later to find out, he said, they liked it.

They also liked that Hinson had the highest academic-progress rate in the conference. SIU athletic director Mario Moccia mentioned a decline in academics first when citing the reasons for Lowerys dismissal. In every public appearance with his new coach Moccia has cited Hinsons academic record as the No. 1 reason for his hiring, Hinson said.

AGOSTINI: UOP'S Thomason did it the right way

Posted: at 2:16 pm

Bob Thomason's coaching career flashes life-lessons that beam far beyond the basketball court.

We like to think we were a part of his growth, given the fact he cut his coaching teeth at Escalon, Turlock, Columbia College and Cal State Stanislaus. But to hear him tell it recently, these stops weren't exactly designed as stepping stones toward a greater goal.

Thomason, 64, enjoyed each of these ports of call. Better still, he understood their importance toward his return to his alma mater, University of the Pacific. And isn't that the way it's supposed to be to savor the journey at least as much as the destination?

To him, it never was about sneaker contracts, TV exposure or a bigger school in a bigger arena. If so, he would have bolted from Pacific years ago. If he coached solely for cash, he wouldn't have stayed in the area for 15 years.

More than 100 former and current players, boosters and students heard the Thomason message last month when he announced his retirement effective after next season.

"It wasn't like I was trying to make money coaching basketball," he told them. "I was coaching the game."

Was he ever.

Thomason took no shortcuts and didn't climb on others' backs. Simply, he worked from the bottom up, coached his players and won games. At each stop, his teams won at least one league championship.

We especially remember the unbeaten Escalon Cougars of 1976, the ground he prepared at Columbia for the Claim Jumpers' glory years under Denny Aye, and his successful rebuilding job at Stanislaus.

A recent chat with Thomason, however, revealed the obvious: Those weren't just passing hello's. He and wife Jerri were raising their two sons, and their family's maturation coincided with his career moves.
