Yogi Blair: Blair Bavin gets yoga instruction from Trudy Hennessy at the Spring Creek Class
A Springlands woman is answering the call of wives and girlfriends in Marlborough by encouraging their men to get off the couch and on to a yoga mat.
Trudy Hennessy, of The Yoga Room, is starting a men-only yoga class after receiving phone calls from women complaining about their partners' bad backs and general inflexibility.
The five-week course, at Spring Creek Community Centre in Ferry Rd, starts on Wednesday, June 27.
Ms Hennessy said each session was a full-body, cardiovascular workout.
There were lots of ways to practise yoga, she said.
"Each personal teacher brings a different style to yoga and I bring an energetic style. People are blown away. It's pretty challenging and people are overwhelmed by the results. Especially when they take it into the functional world and apply it to their sporting activities like running or cycling."
People had faster rates of recovery and increased endurance levels, she said.

Peninsula coaching icon retires

For the past few years, whenever the season ended for the Peninsula High School baseball program, Marco Malich seemingly had a decision to make.
In May, after he guided Peninsula back to the Class 3A state playoffs, Malich realized it was time to let someone else do the job hes done for 33 years. He officially announced his retirement last week.
I wasnt going to retire until I got the program back into contention, Malich said. At the end of the season, I realized where we were. Ive got a great team coming back, so I thought the next guy that takes over, it wont be easy, but they still should be in contention and hopefully get to state again.
Malich leaves Peninsula as one of the winningest coaches in Washington high school baseball history. According to the Washington Baseball Poll a website run by former coach Lem Elway his 19 victories in 2012 give him 439 for his career.
Malichs teams won 13 league championships and reached state 12 times, including a second-place finish in 2006.
But its not only the wins that people surrounding the program will remember.
First of all, hes a great guy who loves kids, said Pete Weymiller, who has assisted Malich since 2002. He treats them like men and helps them develop into men. Hes just a real gentle soul and a real nurturing guy.
Weymiller, whose son Alex plays for Peninsula, said it was a shock to hear Malich was retiring, even though it was something hed mulled for a few years.
I just really admire him for stepping aside; a lot of guys wouldnt, for whatever reason, Weymiller said. He felt like there could be somebody who could take the team to the next level.
Peninsula Principal Tim Winter said he was interested in finding Malichs replacement as quickly as possible so they could work with players during the summer.

Wiedmer: Farewell fete fitting for Fanning

As she had for as many Mays as she could remember, Sharon Fanning-Otis headed to Marco Island, Fla., last month for a week's vacation.
However, there was one very important difference for the Scenic City native who's spent the better part of the last four decades of her life coaching women's basketball at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Kentucky and Mississippi State.
"For the first time in 37 years I didn't bring along a day planner," said Fanning-Otis, who retired as the MSU coach earlier this spring after 17 seasons, then swiftly joined the school's Bulldog Club as a fundraiser.
Not that she thinks her life now needs no advance planning.
"I won't be getting up at 4:30 in the morning in October anymore for early practices, but I've worked hard all my life and this is going to be another tough challenge, especially the first year," she said. "But I'll be 60 next year, and this seemed like a good time for a change."
Longtime friends Wanda Albritton and Roz Crownover figure it's a good time to honor Fanning-Otis, who grew up as Sharon Cable, starring in every sport she played at City High School.
So this Sunday afternoon -- Father's Day -- they're hosting a reception in her honor at 1 p.m. at the Chickamauga Fly Bait and Casting Club in Soddy-Daisy.
"I know it's Father's Day," the guest of honor said. "But there were always a lot of dads at our games to watch their daughters, so maybe they'll come to this, too."
Anyone coming to the reception will have a chance to salute the woman who just might be the best female athlete in our city's history -- a marvelous basketball, volleyball and softball player who unfortunately came along too early to benefit from Title IX until she began to coach.
"I loved every sport. I loved competing," Fanning-Otis said Monday from her Starkville office. "In fact, if there had been more opportunities in softball back then, I'm not sure I wouldn't have thought about coaching softball. I played it for 20 years and I loved it."

National fitness day
MP John Weston has announced he will be introducing a private members bill in the House of Commons that would see the first Saturday in June declared National Health and Fitness Day.
Weston, MP for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country, made the announcement after running the 21.1-kilometre Whistler Half Marathon on Saturday, June 2.
Weston intends for the day to celebrate the many indoor and outdoor opportunities available for Canadians to maintain good health, to encourage all those who make health and well-being a part of their lives and to motivate all Canadians to take steps to improve their general level of fitness.
The idea for a national health and fitness day developed from Westons parliamentary fitness initiative for parliamentarians and senators in Ottawa, which offers professional instruction each week for running and swimming. That led to the drafting of a private members bill, which, Weston said, he plans to introduce in the fall.
The proposal encourages local governments to become involved. All 12 of the local governments in the riding have passed resolutions to recognize National Health and Fitness Day, as well as offering their sports and recreation facilities for free or at a reduced cost on the day.
Powers expand
Backcountry users may notice a new uniform in the woods.
Ministry of forests, lands and natural resource operations compliance and enforcement officers are now known as natural resource officers. Along with a new name, they can enforce a broader range of natural resource legislation.
Previously, compliance and enforcement officers could only enforce acts that they were specifically designated to uphold. As natural resource officers, they will be able to enforce a broader range of statutes, shorten response time and improve their effectiveness in the field.

Nine Questions on Investing for Retirement in a Roth 401(k)

By Carla Fried - 2012-06-13T21:21:02Z
A recent Bloomberg.com personal finance story,"The Retirement Savings Move Tax Pros Love," got an enthusiastic response from readers who are considering investing for retirement in a Roth 401(k). The story also generated many questions. We took some of those questions to retirement expert Barry Picker, a CPA and author of "Barry Picker's Guide to Retirement Distribution Planning." His answers below are guidelines and may not apply to everyone and every situation.
Q: Is there an income limit to be eligible to contribute to a Roth 401(k)?
A: There is no income limit.
Q: If my employer offers a Roth 401(k) and a traditional 401(k), will I have to choose between contributing to one or the other?
A: You can contribute to the traditional, the Roth, or both, as long as your total salary deferral does not exceed the maximum permitted.
Q: What is the maximum amount I can invest in a Roth 401(k) in 2012?
A: The maximum that can be contributed to 401(k)s in 2012 is $17,000, plus an extra $5,500 for individuals past age 50 as of the end of the year. The maximum ($17,000/$22,500) can be divided between the traditional 401(k) and Roth 401(k).
Q: Will my employer make a matching contribution to a Roth 401(k)?
A: If you contribute to a Roth 401(k), your employer can still match your contribution. However, the employers match will be paid into a traditional 401(k), not the Roth 401(k).

4 Ways to Avoid Your Own Retirement Crisis

Some Americans may be better prepared for retirement than they realize.
About 56% of baby boomers and Generation X (people between about age 38 and 65 now) are saving enough to cover their basic retirement costs, including uninsured medical expenses, according to a recent projection by the Employee Benefit Research Institute, a Washington-based nonprofit think tank.
The bad news is that 44% arent saving enough, and some of those people are on the lowest rungs of the income ladder, so they may have little opportunity to ramp up savings as they age.
Still, while some people face a troubling retirement outlook, others in that 44% group can take steps to get their savings on track.
Some Americans face a retirement crisis, but it isnt the majority, said Stephen Utkus, director of Vanguard Groups Center for Retirement Research.
For the longest time, studies have always pointed out that about 50% of Americans seem clearly ready for retirement, he says. But its a mistake to assume the other half is in deep trouble.
Instead, Utkus said, people fall along a spectrum of retirement readiness, with 20% to 30% of Americans partially ready for retirement.
A significant number of people can take some steps between now and retirement to move the dial and get to prepared, he said.
Here are four ideas to improve your retirement readiness.
1. Increase your savings rate 1% or 2% each year
