Steven Sofia Leaps From Broadway to Pilates

Dance/Movement Steven Sofia Leaps From Broadway to Pilates

By Lauren Kay

June 29, 2012

Steven Sofia

A New York City native, Sofia has danced on the Broadway stage, on tour, and with the renowned American Dance Machine. Equally impressive, in the span of just a decade he garnered a steadfast following as a teacher at NYU's former CAP21 program and at professional studios, including Steps on Broadway. In his classes Sofia strives to "turn on the light bulb that starts an inner dialogue," he says. "That allows students to find individual voices that, as dancers, we don't always realize we have." But now, at 42, he is transitioning to a career teaching Pilates and moving to San Francisco.

While filled with bittersweet emotions, Sofia is ready to move forward. "Dancers go through a hard mental transition. We defy gravity and have the science to go past our prime, but eventually it's not healthy," he says. "At some point we do have to transition. I wanted to know, 'How can I still contribute as a dancer but in a different way?' Pilates made sense to me. It's my new dance!"

As a teen, Sofia studied with jazz greats including Phil Black before working with the American Dance Machine. There he met mentors Tony Stevens and Chris Chadman, placing him firmly in an essential musical theater lineage. Soon he had a slew of Broadway gigs under his belt, including "Guys and Dolls," "Beauty and the Beast," and "Chicago."

Around 37, noticing "the upsetting corporatization of the industry," he considered transitioning. Businesses such as a tanning salon or a clothing store were possibilities. But "I realized I had to do something I was passionate about," he says. "Nothing I loved manifested."

A "Chicago" tour and a scheduled audition for Kathleen Marshall's production of "Anything Goes" encouraged him to stall the shift. But on his way to the tryout, his life changed. "A car hit me. I was 40. Instead of worrying about getting older, I had to deal with wondering, Was I going to walk again?" Sofia says. Both his ACL and MCL were torn, his hand was broken, and he had dislocated fingers.

Sofia chose not to have surgery, opting for intense work with a physical therapist. Enter Pilates. "Pilates -- specifically the 'high chair' -- eventually gave me the strength in my knee to walk and dance again," he says. "Now I want to help other people understand their bodies through Pilates, whether to get stronger or rehabilitate."

Poway Pilates uses individual approach with clients

Posted: at 9:11 pm

By Peijean Tsai

While Pilates has surged in popularity in recent years, it certainly isnt a fitness fad, according to Jennifer Richards, Poway Pilates owner and instructor.

Thats because of Pilates extraordinary benefits, with individuals gaining improved flexibility, muscle and core strength, better balance and posture, and reduced stress and pain.

I dont see it as being a trend. I see it growing and flourishing as a method, said Richards, who said her studio closely follows the teachings of Joseph Pilates, whose philosophy emphasizes the core and encompasses the idea that our bodies work as a whole, not as separate units. Bodies are changing because of it, and its a method that fits a lot of different needs.

Poway Pilates is a full-service training studio that incorporates all the equipment and exercises of the Pilates method. Recognizing that each person has different physical needs and issues, the studio uses an individual approach with clients. That includes an initial assessment session to determine the appropriate Pilates classes, training, and modifications to best serve each person.

Classes are offered Mondays though Saturdays and include reformer Pilates, Pilates/barre workout, kettlebell, and Pilates boot camp classes. Private and semi-private instruction is available.

Even in small group classes, instructors are able to modify workouts for each person as needed.

Its a personal training environment. Even though we have classes, you are still getting that individual attention, said Richards, who is one of seven instructors at Poway Pilates.

The studio is for all ages and skill levels, including teens, athletes, post-rehabilitation clients and seniors.

LA’s Gonzalez feeling strong, could make return in late July

Posted: at 9:11 pm

CARSON, Calif. The LA Galaxy's Monday session barely qualified as a game.

The Galaxy fielded what was essentially their reserve side in a scrimmage against a squad full of their own academy players. No stats were kept and the excercise was over after 45 minutes.

It was, however, quite significant for one player on the field, as Omar Gonzalez played for the Galaxy in his first competitive setting since tearing ligaments in his left knee this past winter. The 2011 MLS Defender of the Year played the entire session running, sprinting, making runs and sliding into position when necessary.

The match was one of many tests hes had during his rehabilitation process, and Gonzalez gave himself a passing mark after the most recent sign of progress.

Today was just to see how I am and how my fitness was coming along, he told reporters. I got a little bit tired towards the end, and were playing against our Academy, so I didnt have to get up for a lot of headers or do a lot of defending. For the most part, I think I did well, but I wasnt really tested.

Gonzalez returned to full training more than two weeks ago, and while he has made significant progress during that time, a potential return date is not set in stone just yet. He didn't shy away from sharing his own goal, though.

It is a moving target. We still dont know yet, Gonzalez said. At the end of this month or early next month is my goal. But you never know, maybe Ill surprise you guys.

Instead of 2012 being a memorable step into the upper echelon of American center backs, Gonzalezs year got off to a gloomy beginning. After moving to FC Nrnberg on a short-term loan with hopes of making an impression on the German club, Gonzalez tore a ligament in his left knee during his first training session with the club in January.

His original prognosis had him set to miss seven to nine months. Should Gonzalez return by the end of July, hell have been out just shy of seven months. Already, the signs are encouraging.

'Life goes on,' Larry Robinson says after Canadiens fill last coaching vacancy

Posted: at 4:29 am

MONTREAL Its probable, even likely, that Larry Robinsons coaching career is not over.

It just wont continue with the team on which he became a Hall of Famer, winning six Stanley Cups as one of the greatest defencemen of all time.

Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin rounded out his clubs coaching staff last week, naming former Habs defenceman Jean-Jacques Daigneault as the second bench assistant for head coach Michel Therrien. Daigneault joins Gerard Gallant, with Clment Jodoin contributing perspective from the press gallery and Pierre Groulx continuing his work as goaltending coach.

There had been considerable talk in the Canadiens universe since Bergevins May 2 hiring that Robinson, at that time an assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils, would be an ideal choice to nurture a young Montreal defence corps.

Ultimately, the composition of the coaching staff was left up to Therrien, and on Friday he decided on Daigneault as the final member of his staff.

There is no bitterness in Robinson, who a few times in the past half-dozen years has been in a contractual position to return to the Canadiens in a coaching capacity.

On several occasions, longtime Robinson friend and business agent/adviser Donny Cape has attempted to broker a deal to bring Robinson back to Montreal as a coach, team ambassador, or both. For a variety of reasons, from awkward timing to telephone calls that were not returned by the club to team brass saying it was satisfied with its incumbent staff, a Robinson-Canadiens reunion has not taken place.

It is not happening again; Robinsons NHL career now is unlikely to end in the city where it began.

On Sunday, from his Florida home, Robinson spoke to The Gazette for nearly an hour.

I understand the Canadiens had to get going, they couldnt wait, he said, settling into the off-season with his wife, Jeannette.
