Police stop 'yoga guru' protest

Posted: at 12:12 pm

13 August 2012 Last updated at 05:10 ET

Police in the Indian capital Delhi have stopped prominent anti-corruption campaigner Baba Ramdev from marching to parliament to stage a protest.

Baba Ramdev and his supporters have been detained for allegedly "violating prohibitory laws".

Known as the yoga guru, Baba Ramdev says he is campaigning for the recovery of bribe money allegedly held overseas.

He is also demanding stronger anti-corruption laws. He has millions of supporters across India.

His daily TV programme is watched by people across the country.

Last June he held a nine-day anti-corruption hunger strike before the police evicted him from Delhi.

His latest protest - attended by several thousand people - was held at the Ramlila ground in Delhi, the venue of his protest last year.

Baba Ramdev told his supporters on Monday that they should march to parliament and hold a "peaceful" protest there.

"Throw out the Congress [the governing party] and save the country," he said, before beginning his march.

WHITNEY POINT, N.Y. -- It looks like a cross between surfing and yoga.

Its a great way to get on the water, you experience things you would never on a boat or swimming and I think its a great activity for this area, said Tina Fetton, Southern Tier Stand Up Paddle Corp.

People gathered at Dorchester Park on Sunday to try Stand Up Paddling Yoga. Instructors say the while stand up paddling offers an intense core workout on its own, the addition of yoga makes it more challenging and fun.

I thought it was a great idea and I wanted to bring it to the studio because its so exciting and so much fun and something so different, said Linda Sambursky, Yoga Body Shop. Yoga on a board, how awesome is that?

Fetton added, You really have to ground down and focus on what youre doing and taking those positions to the next level. Its a challenge to everyone who is used to yoga in the studio.

For 90 minutes, students are taught how to use the paddle board and then practice in yoga. Everyone uses a board, paddle, life vest and anchor. Some say falling in the water is the best part.

Its beautiful. I was looking forward to falling, that was one of the things I was looking forward too. Waters just gorgeous here, said John Syjas, Pennsylvania Resident.

Raleigh Durham Chiropractor Incorporates Yoga Into Back Pain Relief Program

Posted: at 12:12 pm

DURHAM, N.C., Aug. 12, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Dr. David Leidich, the Raleigh Durham chiropractor who runs the Chiropractic and Wellness Center, has teamed up with a certified yoga instructor to offer yoga classes to his patients. According to Dr. Leidich, the yoga classes have helped many back pain patients and patients struggling with knee pain, shoulder pain and many stress-related health problems. Yoga instructor Ajay Bhatt was trained and grew up in India and is certified to teach Sivananda yoga. The classes are held every Monday evening from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the center and cost $15 for drop-in students.

Dr. Leidich says patients who are in Mr. Bhatt's yoga class are seeing an improvement in their overall health. "Many of my Durham and Raleigh back pain patients are experiencing pain relief, improved core strength and flexibility. Yoga is a wonderful complement to chiropractic care because it helps people focus intently on their posture, breathing and movement. It's a great stress reliever too; Ajay's students report sleeping better, some have lowered their blood pressure, and our headache sufferers have been feeling better too."

Various forms of yoga have been practiced throughout India for thousands of years and it has become widely popular in the west over the last few decades. According to yoga instructor Bhatt, yoga focuses on bringing the mind and body together to improve overall health. He teaches Sivananda yoga, which is a form of hatha yoga. Each pose focuses on strengthening and increasing the flexibility of a particular area of the body, with an overall concentration on spinal and abdominal strength, as well as improved breathing, relaxation and mental focus. Aside from the traditional yoga poses he teaches, he also incorporates elements of tai chi. He also frequently works with individual patients on exercises adapted to their particular conditions.

Dr. Leidich says that modern research on yoga shows its overall health benefits are extensive. "Often, people who practice yoga have better success with pain management, better balance and flexibility that help them avoid injuries, increased energy levels, improved cardiovascular health, and lowered stress levels. As nearly 90% of doctor visits are about stress-related illnesses, stress reduction helps people in many areas of their lives."

The current season of yoga classes will go through the end of August, and then break for about a month, and resume again in the fall. Dr. Leidich adds, "I love what Ajay is doing here. As a chiropractor heavily involved in promoting natural pain relief and recovery as well as the fitness and overall health of my patients, I recommend yoga to practically everyone."

The Chiropractic and Wellness Center has treated patients with back and neck pain, sciatica and other musculoskeletal problems since 1997. They provide spinal adjustments, therapeutic exercises, yoga classes and massage therapy; their website is http://www.cwcofnc.com.

Yoga Studios Targeted by Government Agencies: Report

Posted: at 12:12 pm

Government regulators have been targeting yoga studios in New York, fining them for various infractions, according to a published report.

The New York City Department of Buildings fined studios for not having a proper permit and the states Labor Department audited studios that listed their instructors as independent contractors instead of as employees, The New York Times reports.

Yoga studio owners are complaining that the government agencies are looking for ways to make money from an industry that earns an estimated $6 billion a year in the United States, according to the Times.

"Agencies are suffering," J. Brown, the owner of Abhyasa Yoga in Brooklyn told the Times. "They think they can reinterpret statutes and apply them to yoga."

At least two studio owners say they were fined by the Buildings Department for failing to have a physical culture establishment permit, a requirement of businesses the agency considers health clubs. One of the studio owner's was fined $800, the Times said.

The Labor Department audited at least three studios for not listing instructors as full-time employees, the Times said.

Leo Rosales, a spokesman for the agency, told the Times that the status of employee-employer relationships at yoga studios are assessed on a case-by-case basis. "There are no statutory guidelines specific to yoga studios," he said.

Many yoga instructors teach classes at several studios, which would incur costs if they classified the instructors as employees.

"Equating yoga centers with gyms or weight loss salons is a little like equating a painting by Rothko with a billboard sign," Alison West, the executive director of Yoga for New York told the Times.

Indian Yoga Guru Detained After Anti-Graft Protest

Posted: at 12:12 pm

A popular yoga guru and thousands of his supporters were detained by police Monday as they tried to march to India's Parliament to intensify an anti-corruption protest and press for a change of government.

As he was led away by police, Baba Ramdev shouted slogans urging his supporters to fight to end India's endemic corruption and seek the repatriation of billions of dollars in illegal money he says Indians have stashed in foreign banks.

Waving Indian flags and shouting slogans, the protesters climbed into a row of police buses parked around the sprawling New Delhi fairground that Ramdev and his supporters had occupied for the past four days. Police said the protesters would be taken to a stadium on the outskirts of the city and would likely be released by Monday evening.

Before the march, the bearded, saffron-clad yogi urged his supporters to throw out the ruling Congress Party and bring in a "clean" government.

"Throw out the Congress; save the country," he shouted as his followers applauded and cheered wildly.

Ramdev, who had not eaten for the past four days, had set a Sunday evening deadline for a response from the government to his protest, but received none.

"The government has become completely deaf. We have to make them hear us. Now our protest will move from here to the doorstep of the Parliament," Ramdev said.

AP

Ramdev told his supporters to be prepared to go to jail during their march since police would try to stop them from holding a rally near Parliament. He urged his followers to remain peaceful and not resort to violence as police removed them from Ramlila Ground.

Ramdev has been demanding a robust ombudsman law to keep checks on government, a strong and independent Central Bureau of Investigation and efforts to act against tax evasion and illegal money sent to banks abroad.

After losing post at Arizona State, Dennis Erickson unsure about future

Posted: at 11:15 am

by Doug Haller - Aug. 12, 2012 07:47 PM The Republic | azcentral.com

For most of his adult life, almost for as long as he can remember, Dennis Erickson has been on a football field in August, preparing, teaching, coaching the sport that has given him so much.

On a recent summer day, however, Erickson is driving in Idaho, running errands, wondering what he'll do next.

"It's very strange," Erickson said by phone. "I've been doing it for 40-some years as a coach, 40-some years doing one thing and now all of a sudden it's not there. It's strange. Really strange."

Nine months have passed since Erickson lost his job at Arizona State. Practically a day doesn't go by when the football coach doesn't wonder just what the hell happened. How a promising 6-2 start spiraled out of control, costing him his job, forcing the Sun Devils to go another direction with Todd Graham.

"I really don't have any answers," Erickson said. "We're sitting there 6-2, we have a great recruiting class coming in and then things go backward on us. But the bottom line is, I'm in charge, and when you lose four in a row like that, nothing good is going to happen. That's just how the game is. You got to win games, and we didn't win enough."

Hired to take the Sun Devils to a championship level, Erickson went 31-31 in five seasons. The Sun Devils went to two bowl games, but finished with a winning record just once, Erickson's first season.

This isn't the first time Erickson's been out of work. In 2005, after going 2-14 with the San Francisco 49ers, he was fired and didn't coach the next season. But that was different.

"It wasn't as bad because I knew I was going to get back in it the next year," Erickson said.

This time, his coaching future doesn't look as promising.
