Students programme set to welcome second batch

Staff Reporter / 12 October 2012

The Hamdan bin Mohammed Students Personal Development Programme, launched in September 2011 under the patronage and directives of Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, has begun arrangements for receiving the second batch of students.

The programme held a familiarisation meeting attended by delegations from the government and private schools in Dubai and parents of the students who took admission in the programme. The meeting provided a general idea about the programme, and discussed its objectives and stages of execution.

It also reviewed the achievements made by the first batch by eliciting the views and opinions of the students, schools and parents.

A large section of the attendees pointed out that the programme has helped the students in determining their professional career, and has had a positive impact on their academic performance.

The team tasked with the programme, which comprises the Secretariat General of the Dubai Executive Council, Department of Human Resources, Dubai Government, Knowledge and Human Resources Development Authority and Dubai Educational Zone, are currently working on completing all the arrangements for receiving the second batch of students.

The preparations include naming the schools and students, and conducting awareness seminars for schools and for the voluntary graduates of the Mohammed bin Rashid Programme for Leadership Development to encourage them to voluntarily participate in training the students on future professional planning. The programme will also follow up with the schools whose students were part of the first batch, and who will comply with the requirements of the programme for the next two years.

We are keen on creating a supportive environment to assist students so that they can benefit from the programme, said Abdulla Al Shaibani, Secretary-General of the Dubai Executive Council.

He said: We cooperate with all our partners in government and public sectors as well as schools to achieve the cherished objectives which serve to develop the education sector in Dubai, and are working to welcome the second batch of students. The programme reflects the interest and keenness of Shaikh Hamdan in supporting the students of our country.

Continuing Education Provider Professional Development Resources Partners with The National Psychologist on New Online …

Posted: at 7:23 am

Professional Development Resources has announced a new partnership venture with The National Psychologist the Independent Newspaper for Practitioners to publish a series of new online continuing education courses that will offer a variety of brief clinical psychotherapy tips.

Jacksonville, Florida (PRWEB) October 12, 2012

The National Psychologist is an independent newspaper that circulates bimonthly to almost 30,000 practicing psychologists and graduate psychology students.

The first two online courses in the series, which were published this week on the Professional Development Resources website, are titled Psychotherapy Practice Tips, Part 1 and Psychotherapy Practice Tips, Part 2.

These new courses are designed to appeal to busy clinicians across mental health disciplines, who find it convenient to keep up their clinical skills by reading brief articles between sessions or during down time. The time-saving advantage of being able to read a large number of clinical articles in a very short time is important to most psychologists and other mental health professionals, who are required by their licensing laws to complete a designated number of continuing education credits each year.

The courses are very dense, says Leo Christie, PhD, president of Professional Development Resources. They each include 14 or 15 different clinical topics in the form of archived articles from recent issues of The National Psychologist. What is new and different about these courses is that they deliver a great deal of timely information in an easy-to-read format. The topic selection runs the gamut, including tips for treating complex post-traumatic stress disorder, coping with violent patients, the psychological impact of hearing loss, Internet pornography addiction, and more. Busy clinicians should be able to complete these courses online in two hours or less.

The two companies which are coincidentally celebrating their 20th birthdays in 2012 have had a working relationship since 2001, when The National Psychologist (TNP) first contracted with Professional Development Resources to cosponsor the TNP Quiz, which is featured in every issue and awards one hour of CE to those who read the issue and successfully complete the quiz. The relationship has worked and has led from continuing to cosponsor the quiz to the cooperative publication of other CE courses on ethics and risk management in psychotherapy practice.

At the start, all we did was work together on the quiz, says Christie. After a couple of years, Martin Saeman, managing editor of TNP, came up with the idea of creating CE courses based on some of the articles that appeared in the publication. We started out with selected ethics articles, later added risk management topics, and the rest is history. It has been a natural and comfortable alliance.

"The relationship between The National Psychologist and Professional Development Resources has been a good one from the beginning. These latest two new courses simply add a new 'clinical' component to our online CE offerings. Our goal has always been to provide our readers with news and information in an unbiased fashion much of which is not found in similar publications. This alliance is just an extension of this goal," says Saeman.

The two companies plan further cooperative courses including more ethics and risk management courses as well as possibly branching out into other topic groups, including technology and practice building.

EHS associate dean candidate Elizabeth Kirby: Online education, international involvement key in success

Posted: at 7:23 am

College of Education and Human Services associate dean candidate Elizabeth Kirby said Thursday online education and international collaboration are key in strengthening Central Michigan Universitys teacher education program.

Kirby, chairwoman of education leadership,is one of two candidates for the position and spoke to more than 30 people at an open forum in the EHS building. The associate dean will be responsible for supporting the dean with anything regarding the college, including curriculum, budgeting and the development of faculty.

Through my career and my life, my focus has been education, she said. This opportunity to utilize my skills and strengths is extremely appealing.

The future of the programs online classes were quickly addressed.

Weve talked about this, weve looked at this and weve felt a serious intention to creating the biggest capacity we could to deliver education anytime, anywhere and also being able to be portable and flexible, Kirby said.

She said the losses in teachers and students in Michigan would force the department to look at what could be offered online.

Weve lost 1,100 teachers in Michigan the past few years and weve lost 50,000 students. That all plays its way upward in terms of who is going to come to CMU, Kirby said. The competition is immense. In essence, we want to be competitive and we want to attract audiences inside Michigan and outside.

In terms of international involvement, Kirby is working on bringing Chinese teachers to campus in hopes of bringing them back for a summer program.

I think globally that outreach is important and the relationships will only strengthen the college, Kirby said.

Kirby also spoke about her scholarly works and how it is important for leaders to continue to learn.

UK to Get Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga Next Month

Posted: at 12:21 am

Both of Lenovo's IdeaPad Yoga models to arrive in the UK in November.

With Windows 8 launching at the end of October, we're finally going to start seeing some of the computers we've been talking about for months in the flesh. Both CES and Computex were full to the brim with Windows 8 laptops and computers that (obviously) couldn't launch until Windows 8 hit the market. Among them was the IdeaPad Yoga from Lenovo. The Yoga actually got quite a bit of attention at CES for its unique design. This week brings news that the Yoga will launch in the UK in November.

Tuesday night Lenovo revealed four Windows 8 devices: the IdeaPad Yoga 13 (flip), the IdeaTab Lynx (split), the ThinkPad Twist (twist), and the IdeaPad Yoga 11 (flip). All four offer touch-based screens for Windows 8's touchy-feely UI, and the Yoga 13 is set for availability on October 26. However, it seems consumers in the UK will have to wait a bit longer and pay a bit of a premium. While the Yoga 13 starts at $1,099 in the U.S., TechRadar reports that the notebook will start at 999 when it launches in the UK next month. By today's rates, that works out at just shy of $1600. Yikes.

It's not all bad, though. While the U.S. won't get the Yoga 11 until December, it's slated for UK availability in November. Pricing is still a bit unfair, with folks in the U.S. looking at a starting price of $799 and UK prices starting at 699 (nearly $1120), but it does arrive that bit earlier.

The IdeaPad Yoga 13 packs 13.3-inch HD+ (1600 x 900) display, 3rd generation Core i series CPU, Integrated Intel HD 4000 Graphics, up to 8GB of RAM, as much as 256 GB of SSD storage, and a 1MP 720p HD Camera with face tracking capability. The Yoga 11 is powered by Nvidia's Tegra 3 chip, boasts an 11.6-inch HD, packs 2GB of RAM, and runs on Windows RT.

Notebook: Michigan coaching staff supports Chuck Pagano, tight ends get Wellmanized

Posted: October 11, 2012 at 5:15 pm

While Chuck Pagano lies in a hospital bed at the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis in a battle for his life, the Michigan football coaching staff will offer every bit of support it can.

Pagano, the first-year head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia and has been hospitalized since Sept. 26.

Michigan coach Brady Hoke and his staff purchased 40 #chuckstrong T-shirts and will wear them to Michigan Stadium for the Wolverines matchup against Illinois on Saturday.

Several members of the staff have ties with Pagano and his family. Pagano worked for defensive coordinator Greg Mattison when Mattison was with the Baltimore Ravens.

Hoke and the members of the staff that came from San Diego State knew Paganos brother, John, a defensive coordinator with the San Diego Chargers, rather well.

Theres a strong relationship, Hoke said Wednesday. Hes one of ours. Hes our kind of guy. So we want to pay a little tribute to him and also for the cause.

Hoke said he made the decision to do the #chuckstrong tribute on Sunday night, which was the same evening Paganos Colts upset the Green Bay Packers, 30-27, in Indianapolis.

CHASE THE RABBIT: Nathan Scheelhaase is the kind of guy you have to keep an eye on.

The third-year Illinois starting quarterback is a dual threat in the backfield, with major speed to boot. As a result, Hoke has done something a little different to prepare the defense for Scheelhaase.

Ive always done it with defensive linemen we do a little at the end of practice, some chase the rabbit, we call it, Hoke said. Drills where you instill a mindset, a mentality, I think.
