User-Managed Access for Higher Education: UMA Enables Secure, Private College Transcript Sharing

Posted: October 11, 2012 at 5:11 pm

PISCATAWAY, NJ--(Marketwire - Oct 11, 2012) - Valuable personal data about us resides in dozens of different web locations, and we frequently contend with the challenges of sharing it securely and privately among limited circles of associates. One example is college transcripts, which contain sensitive information to which prospective employers and job search sites need access but which students struggle to share in a timely, trustworthy, and secure way. Kantara Initiative's User-Managed Access (UMA) Work Group published revision 5 of its data access protocol on October 1 to solve such challenges.

UMA lets web application creators easily craft systems that give control of data to their users. Any web-based data ecosystem can leverage UMA, including eHealth and eGov portals, social networking sites, and personal data stores. It offers individuals centralized security, privacy, and control over sharing data with friends and family, business associates, and organizations. And it allows apps to offer sophisticated privacy and sharing options without extensive software development. One UMA implementation, the SMART system developed at Newcastle University, is working to help students control the sharing of Transcripts of Records and other personal data hosted on University systems with future employers. Recently, the system was integrated with the UK Federation to provide these benefits to other British universities.

Maciej Machulak, SMART team leader and CEO of Cloud Identity Ltd, comments, "Over the years, universities have significantly reduced the paperwork students have to deal with, now providing services online for academic data management. We believe User-Managed Access is a key technology to securely open up access to this data and give students full control. With UMA, students can share their online data selectively when forming collaboration groups for research projects or when applying for post-graduate jobs."

"UMA is doing some of the most important work in the online world today," declares Doc Searls, director of Project VRM and author of The Intention Economy: When Customers Take Charge. "Nothing matters more than empowering users to manage everything that's theirs, and UMA is at the forefront of that. Lots of great work has already been done, and much more remains."

"The Attribute Exchange Network (AXN) relies on User-Managed Access to help simplify, and deploy a business model for, online identity verification for participants in the 'identity ecosystem' envisioned by The National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC)," said David Coxe, CEO of ID Dataweb."UMA enables AXN users to manage their identity attributes in simple, transparent, and secure ways, thereby strengthening online trust."

On Wednesday, October 17, at 8am Pacific time, the UMA Work Group will conduct a free public webinar to discuss and provide live demonstrations of UMA's benefits for the higher education community and other communities where data sharing presents security and privacy challenges. All are welcome to attend. Find webinar information at http://tinyurl.com/umawg. Follow the group on Twitter at @UMAWG.

Architects urged to be city changers

Posted: at 5:11 pm

MANILA, Philippines - City dwellers will make up 70 percent of the world population by 2050, and cities must enact drastic changes now in order to accommodate the city dwellers of the 21st century; and offer them living conditions that are conducive to personal development and well-being.

Architects can play a crucial role in the city evolution by their capacity to meet the challenges of urban sustainability, and develop the tools needed to create resilient, sustainable and livable cities.

Renowned architect Philip H. Recto, the keynote speaker during the Philippine observance of World Day of Architecture celebration conducted by the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) recently, urged architects to be city changers by playing an active role in the city evolution, especially in areas such as: mitigating climate change, reducing carbon emissions, and improving management of resources and energy; structuring cities to be more socially-inclusive, accessible and equitable; developing cities that can resist crises and cataclysms; developing economic, educational and creative opportunities for all; and ensuring the security and sanitation conditions essential to all inhabitants.

Architects alone, and on their own, cannot bring about the ideal change that society needs in the face of climate change. however, we are in a position to initiate and lead the desired change to mitigate the challenge and get our communities more prepared in dealing with the adversities that climate change may bring, Recto said.

The task is not really as awesome as it seems. The first step is to work towards getting everyone engaged in the change process, and inculcate the notion that the change has to begin with oneself, he continued.

At this point, he also mentioned that his own architectural office was furnished with 97 percent recycled materials in support of sustainable development.

Recto stressed that in the context of the UN Human Settlements campaign I am a City Changer, it begins with an awareness of the urban issues that confront us today; and it is this awareness that should transform our attitude -- from one of resignation that things happen by chance, to a victorious attitude that we can make a difference because things happen by choice.

The World Day of Architecture celebration was initiated by the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) or International Union of Architects which is an international federation of national associations of architects with headquarters in Paris. Since its founding in 1948, it has grown to encompass the key professional organizations of architects in 124 countries and territories, and counts on some 1.3 million members worldwide today.

In 1996, the UIA arrived at a decision to celebrate the World Day of Architecture on the first Monday of October of each year. This is the same day that the United Nations observes World Habitat Day in order to reflect on the state of human settlements and the basic right to adequate shelter for all. - (Philstar News Service, http://www.philstar.com)

Online Ed Offers Cost Savings to Adult Students

Posted: at 5:10 pm

For adults who want to complete a college degree, online education programs offer various cost-saving options, a group of online program leaders said recently.

Through Prior Learning Assessments, or PLAs, students can earn college credits in areas they've already mastered without taking courses, panelists noted during "Debt and Disillusionment: Extending the Economic Advantages of Online Learning," a conference held in early October in Washington, D.C.

"We say come to us and show us what you know ... and we'll give you the credit, regardless of how you achieved it," said Ed Klonoski, president of Charter Oak State College, a virtual institution.

[Find out how to take online courses for free.]

Adult students with extensive professional training can particularly benefit through certain types of PLAs, the panelists said, including examinations, which offer the opportunity to earn credits through tests, and portfolios, which allow students to amass a lump sum of college credits at once.

Any student can attempt to test out of subjects at online schools including Excelsior College, which offers 50 exams that can count toward degrees. The tests cost between $95 and $395, and a passing score can earn between three and eight credits at Excelsior, college Provost and Chief Academic Officer Mary Beth Hanner said after the conference.

Students who fare best with these exams are typically independent learners, Hanner noted, and having discrete knowledge in the area being tested helps. (Examinations range from English Composition to Pathophysiology.) Test preparation is up to students, and, while test scores can be canceled after completion, no refunds are given for failed exams, she said.

"We tend to recommend exams for folks who really are self-starters," Hanner said.

Adults with significant professional training could also consider earning credits in bulk by creating a portfolio that showcases their experiences. LearningCounts.org, a project offered in part by the College Board, helps students create online portfolios for credit, said panelist Chari Leader Kelley, who serves as the vice president of LearningCounts.org at the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL).

Though costs and credits can vary by institution, CAEL's online portfolios are accepted at schools including Excelsior, Walden University, and Bellevue University (as well as at a variety of traditional universities).

Yoga lovers bring new twists to ancient art

Posted: at 10:12 am

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

From sun salutations in the sand, to planks on paddle boards, you'll find reincarnations of yoga practices far beyond the traditional studios. There are lots of modern twists on an ancient practice, right here in the Tampa Bay area.

Yoga in Tampa is opening its doors and stretching its reach.

"I see a very significant evolutionary process happening with the yoga community here," said yogi Tricia Schuster, who has been practicing for 13 years.

While maintaining its traditional values, yoga is taking a new turn, thanks in part to a whole new demographic of yogis.

"They're open to the fact that meditation and yoga is really a lifestyle. It's a way of living, not just a workout," explained Roni Sloman, the owner of Bella Prana studio in South Tampa.

Steven Klein is one of them. He enjoyed yoga so much he wanted to share the energy far beyond the classes.

"What if you could have the yoga community out and centered around you, outside of the yoga studio and have fun and be surrounded by that kind of entertainment. I just enjoy being around those types of people much more than going out like the same old thing like I was 20 years old or something because, I'm not anymore," he said.

It's yoga gone social -- combining the practice with popular hobbies like paddleboarding.

"Being outside is unique everytime, it's different everyday, the light, the wind, the heat, whatever it is, and so it gives it a really interesting vibration for the group," said Roni.

Yoga helps infants as young as few days old to improve bodily systems

Posted: at 10:12 am

Dubai, October 11 (ANI): A new form of yoga for babies is becoming popular in Dubai.

Some 34 infants as young as a few days old to 12 months were initiated into the "hugely beneficial" exercise along with their moms at a unique workshop organised by the Pampers Mommy and Baby Sleep Academy in Dubai, Gulf News rwported.

As part of the workshop, certified baby yoga guru Odona Farska of the Flow Yoga Dubai Studio took the infants and their mothers through a series of gentle movements that are proven to benefit them physically, physiologically and psychologically.

"Baby yoga helps stimulate bodily systems like the digestive and nervous systems, besides ensure sufficient physical activity for a baby. It helps the child sleep well and heal birth traumas. It is also a bonding time for the mother and child and ensures they are happier," Gulf News quoted Farska, who mastered the art of baby yoga in London, as saying.

She said a typical baby yoga session spans 10-15 minutes for 3-6 month-olds and 20-30 minutes for 6-12-month-olds.

It covers all features of classic yoga, right from the warm-up to the stretching, postures and movements so that the vital organs are stimulated, the muscles toned and the mind and body relaxed.

By extension, baby yoga is said to influence interaction with the child in every aspect, be it the manner in which he or she is lifted, carried, sat down or walked around. (ANI)
