Business Leaders Are Learning That Success Does Not Always Equal Fulfillment

DENVER, Oct. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Things are running like clockwork. Profits are high, salary is excellent, perks are plentiful. The media is calling, coverage is positive. Then poof - it's gone. Like many entrepreneurs, Brian Gast lived in a bubble filled with delusions of grandeur and a sense of import. In his new book, "The Business of Wanting More: Why Some Executives Move From Success To Fulfillment And Others Don't," Gast shares not only his personal story, but presents the transformational Q7 Process which will help executives, struggling between success and happiness, achieve both.
Somewhere along his journey, Gast says, "I became fascinated by the workings of the psyche and committed myself to dissolving the illusions that kept me from seeing what was true about myself and the world. Something deep inside told me that my life was no accident; that I, in fact, was uniquely equipped to help busy executives discern what truly fulfills them. Taking what I learned about transforming human behavior, I created the Q7 Process to help executives move from success to fulfillment."
The Q refers to the quadrant, one quarter of the four-dimensional grid comprised of Feeling, Acting, Thinking, and Being; the 7 refers to the seven steps of the process. These steps span three stages: Preparation (steps 1, 2, and 3); Transformation (steps 4 and 5); and Integration (steps 6 and 7):
Step One: Take a Fearless Inventory of Your Life
Step Two: Create A Vision For Your Life
Step Three: Remove The Barriers To Fulfillment
Step Four: Burst Your Bubble
Step Five: Build Your Court Of Support
Step Six: Create a Personal-Practices Regimen
Step Seven: Draw A Road Map To Your Future

Young Israeli Arabs and Jews, Japanese to visit Pittsburgh non-profit and bolster efforts to export adult career …

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --On October 20, 2012, Manchester Bidwell Corporation (MBC) will host a group of international delegates attending the One Young World Summit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Four of the young leaders attending the "Art for Work's Sake" breakout session are from countries currently working to replicate the success of MBC in their own cities.
UPMC, with the help of of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, is generously sponsoring the attendance of university student/activist Narumi Ishihara and university student/journalist Ryohei Moji of Japan and Helwe Najami and Katab Uzan Inbal, education advocates from Israel.
MBC CEO and Founder William E. Strickland Jr. is no stranger to the citizens of Israel and Japan. In 2010, Strickland was awarded the Goi Peace Award by the Goi Peace Foundation of Japan. Many recipients of this honor have subsequently been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Additionally, in summer 2012, Strickland received the Pursuer of Peace award from Pittsburgh's Rodef Shalom congregation for his work to establish a center for Arabs and Jews in northern Israel.
Strickland and MBC's success working with disadvantaged people is long-standing. In 1968, Strickland founded Manchester Craftsmen's Guild to provide local at-risk youth with the same student-mentor relationship he had experienced with his teacher, Frank Ross. This program has expanded to include four art studios and serves approximately 400 Pittsburgh-area students a year. Additionally, Strickland oversees the operations of Bidwell Training Center, which provides accredited and state licensed career training to 200 adults in transition each year. Together under the parent company MBC and along with social entrepreneurial initiatives like jazz concerts, orchid sales and commercial real estate, the programs create the empowering educational environment Strickland espouses as "the cure for spiritual cancer."
Realizing the educational model could be scaled, Strickland founded the National Center for Arts & Technology to expand to other cities in the United States and abroad. Currently, five cities across the country have affiliated centers. The NCAT team is working with community leaders in Israel and Japan to establish facilities overseas.
"Hope is universal but it needs a place to blossom. I believe we have a way to do that with MBC's educational model," says Strickland. "I am excited to host these vibrant young world leaders. Also, I am grateful to UPMC and the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh for bringing together representatives from the countries we are trying to help by establishing centers. With friends of this caliber, we will succeed in expanding across the globe."
"UPMC has a longstanding relationship with Manchester Bidwell Corporation. We proudly support the educational work MBC does in Pittsburgh and across the U.S. with both youth and adults. We are excited to help the organization take its next evolutionary, international step and create relationships with these One Young World delegates relationships we hope will help successfully establish centers in both Israel and Japan," says Scott Lammie,Chief Financial Officer,UPMC Health Plan,Senior Vice President,UPMC Insurance Services Division.
In addition to the One Young World delegates attending breakout session and meeting Strickland, MBC is also hosting a dinner for a second group of delegates the evening of October 20, 2012. This group, including representatives from Egypt to South Africa, will tour the facility and attend a 9:30 p.m. performance by GRAMMY Award winning musician Bela Fleck as well as The Marcus Roberts Trio. Fleck and the Trio will be playing at MBC's facility that evening as part of affiliated program MCG Jazz's concert season.

Workout of the week: Silent Hot Yoga
Posted: at 7:21 am
Colorado Athletic Club. 1821 30th St., Boulder, 303-501-1700, wellbridge.com/colorado-athletic-club/boulder
Instructor: Ani Jackson, of Boulder, began her yoga practice in 1995 and began teaching yoga in 2005. She's been teaching hot yoga for about a year and a half and started teaching the Silent Hot Yoga class at the Colorado Athletic Club seven months ago.
"For people who practice regularly, the silent class allows them to go deeper into their postures. It's more meditative," Jackson says.
The fact that Jackson practices along with the class allows her to use her own movements and breath to help set the mood for the class, something she says she finds particularly enjoyable about teaching this class.
What is the workout? The workout is basically the Bikram model of hot yoga in which the same 26 postures are done in the same sequence every time in a hot room. The 26 postures have been chosen and sequenced provide benefit to the whole body, inside and out, while working together synergistically.
What's different? What's different about this class is that it's conducted almost entirely in silence. I say almost, because Jackson does cue each posture by stating its name and the duration the posture will be held. But she doesn't give other verbal clues about the posture such as how to move into it, to check your alignment, to check your breath and so on.
I've taken many yoga classes over the years and this was the first time there wasn't almost constant chatter from the instructor and definitely the first time that the instructor practiced along with us instead of moving around and correcting postures.
Cost: The class is free to members of the Colorado Athletic Club. Non-members can pay a $15 fee to use the club in it's entirety for the day, which is pretty great considering they have some nice amenities.
Level: I would put this class at a six on a 10 point scale. I've done other yoga classes that were harder physically, but not as challenging mentally.
During class, I realized how much of a distraction the talking is in normal yoga classes. In the silence, I found my mind wandering quite and bit, and it was a challenge to stay mentally focused and in the present moment. That proved to be harder for me than the physical challenge of the postures. However, yoga is about challenging yourself in every capacity and I have no doubt that, over time, I would find this class extremely meditative.

Dade City yoga studio honored for work with domestic violence victims

DADE CITY
In her nine years of teaching the art of yoga, Nancy Hamory has heard plenty of positive affirmations from students who tell her they are now breathing, walking and living better.
Some of her highest praise, however, comes from the survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
"Some of them tell me that they haven't left the house in five or more years," said Hamory, 50, owner of Sun & Moon Yoga. "They haven't always felt safe at home. They feel safe here."
Through a special partnership with Sunrise of Pasco domestic and sexual violence center, Hamory has been offering free yoga classes to the agency's clients and staff members for the past few years. She'll be among the nine honorees recognized at a luncheon today for their efforts to help the victims of domestic violence.
"Our slogan is Know Your Peace," said Terri O'Brien, director of community education and Delta project coordinator at Sunrise. "We are honoring people who do their part to bring peace to the community."
Those free yoga classes help the victims through the healing process, said O'Brien.
"Sometimes, the victims of domestic violence and sexual assault feel like they're going crazy," said O'Brien. "We assure them that their mind is like a filing cabinet that has been turned over the information is still there, it just needs to be organized. Yoga helps them organize by enabling them to breathe and think more clearly, to release their stress. Yoga can help to pull them back together."
She said some clients even said the yoga reduced their need for pain medications and therapies. O'Brien has experienced those benefits first-hand.

Top Five Soundtracks to Perform Yoga to on Halloween
Posted: at 7:21 am
Yoga is great to perform all year round, but why not make it an exciting Halloween event by listening to spooky music and lighting festive candles? If you have children, make it a family event. Another great idea is to have a candlelight yoga party to celebrate this holiday. Try one or more of the following five soundtracks while you practice yoga this and every Halloween.
#1 "Tim Burton Corpse Bride Soundtrack"
Be sure to perform the corpse pose while listening to the "Tim Burton Corpse Bride Soundtrack." "Moon Dance" is one of many great songs on this soundtrack and would be an excellent time to move into half moon pose. Continue through the song by starting on one side, returning to a standing position and repeating on the other side. Continue this half moon yoga sequence throughout the song.
#2 "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial: The 20th Anniversary Edition"
"E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial Soundtrack" is perfect for performing yoga on Halloween since it has the song "The Magic Of Halloween." In addition, it has the song "Frogs" which makes it perfect for performing the frog pose or the half frog pose. The full frog brings both legs up, but there are other variations of this posture as well. Some look more like a traditional frog such as the laying down version or the frog pose for kids. Choose your jumping amphibian of choice or perform all of them while listening to this enchanting song.
#3 "Alice In Wonderland Soundtrack"
The "Alice In Wonderland Soundtrack" features music from the Disney and Tim Burton version of this movie. "The Cheshire Cat" song is a great one to perform the cat pose to. Get ready to fight off evil spirits by performing the Warrior I, II and III poses while listening to "Going To Battle."
#4 "Mirror Mirror Soundtrack"
The "Mirror Mirror" soundtrack has a great combination of magical music ("The Dwarves" and "Magic Potion") and haunting harmonies ("Mannequin Attack" and "Beast") to perform yoga to on Halloween.
#5 "Bram Stoker's Dracula: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack"

Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream Program Provides Funding and Coaching for Small Businesses in Los Angeles
Posted: at 7:18 am
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --The Boston Beer Company today announced that its Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream program is offering loans to small businesses in the Los Angeles area and will also offer its first speed coaching event for the region's small business community. With a focus on helping small food, beverage, craft brewing and hospitality business owners, Brewing the American Dream provides loans, coaching, mentoring, and educational resources to business owners who find it difficult to access the funds and guidance needed to start, sustain or grow their businesses.
While in the past only a handful of regions had access to the program, the 2012 national expansion of Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream, which was developed in partnership with non-profit micro-lender Accion, recently made available for the first time at least $1 million in new loans to recipients across the country. Additionally, in select cities such as Los Angeles it will also provide access to the initiative's high-impact one-on-one coaching activities, the first of which will be held on October 16 at the Grace E. Simons Lodge.
Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream has already provided close to $1.5 million of micro-financing to more than 150 businesses nationwide, and created or saved nearly 1,000 jobs. Food, beverage, craft brewing and hospitality small business owners can apply for loans ranging from $500 to $25,000 to be used for a variety of business purposes including expansion, equipment, and marketing, with all loan payments recycled back into the fund.
LA Supports Small Business Growth
"Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy," said Mayor Villaraigosa."Our office is proud to support Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream, in partnership with Accion and the VEDC, in their efforts to provide key assistance and networking to ensure the continued growth and success of small businesses."
According to Jim Koch, brewer and founder of Samuel Adams, the goal of the program is to work with the true small businesses in Los Angeles that are often viewed as too risky by traditional banks but who are at the forefront of job creation and growth within their local communities and where relatively modest loans and one-one-one coaching can have a meaningful impact.
"A large part of what differentiates our effort is our focus on offering in-depth expertise and advice in combination with small loans. We understand the challenges because we've been there; I've been there. From being turned down by banks 28 years ago when I was just starting out and desperately needed funding, to figuring out how to distribute my product, I know firsthand what these small business owners are going through, and sincerely believe that Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream can help them overcome many of their obstacles so they can be successful and grow."
Los Angeles' First BTAD Loan Recipients & Speed Coaching Event
As part of the Los Angeles expansion, Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream also announced the region's first loan recipients through VEDC, all of whom are small businesses that were unable to secure financing through traditional lenders. Initial LA recipients include:
The owners of each business will also have the opportunity to participate in the upcoming speed coaching seminar sponsored by Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream. The event is comprised of various Samuel Adams employees (i.e., from sales, graphic design, packaging-commerce , etc.) as well as local area experts who spend 20 minutes in a series of one-on-one sessions addressing specific problems and issues facing the participating small business owners. For example, an entrepreneur who has a question about pricing might meet with a finance expert who'll provide specific ideas and tools to help competitively position the product with potential customers.
Carroll's new NFL coaching legacy in Seattle
Posted: at 7:18 am
The most remarkable thing about Pete Carroll is not that he got a third chance to become an NFL head coach without winning a Super Bowl. The most remarkable thing is hes the third-oldest head coach in the league.
Take one look at Carroll and you dont think 61. Take a second look and you think theres a misprint in his bio.
If one watches the way he bounds around the field like a gazelle on uppers, unflaggingly joyous, he seems like a wild-eyed college coach rather than the stoic, joyless statues normally patrolling NFL sidelines. Although easily lampooned, it is refreshing to watch.
Carrolls approach has always been different. Hes as competitive as anyone in the game but realizes its still a game, not a war. He believes a team belongs to its players. They need direction and correction, but in the end, they have to be responsible for themselves and to each other.
That approach didnt seem to work with either the Jets or the Patriots. He was fired after one season in New York because the Jets did what no Jet can survive: starting fast (6-5) and ending badly (0-5).
He was fired after three mostly successful seasons in New England (27-21, two playoff appearances) because he made the mistake of following a legend, Bill Parcells. As Carroll would learn, it is better to be the man who follows the man who followed The Man than to be next in line behind a folk hero.
Parcells was all about East Coast edges. Carroll had rock music blaring from his office. The contrast was simply too much once the winning stopped.
Certainly the team declined on Carrolls watch. Things trended in the wrong direction not only year by year but season by season, as those teams started off fast (4-0, 4-1, 4-0) but finished slow (6-6, 5-6 and 4-8). Carroll had inherited a Super Bowl team, it was said, and coached it to mediocrity, but that is not totally accurate. Through no fault of his own, he lost Hall of Fame RB Curtis Martin to stubbornness on upper managements part after Carrolls first season. After that, the Patriots were not a Super Bowl team any more. They were a team in decline.
By the final game of his final season, he was starting only three of 27 players drafted by general manager Bobby Grier, a result not only of poor drafting but also selecting players who did not fit Carrolls approach.
One thing a coach must have is talent that fits him, both stylistically and strategically. If he likes tall corners, dont draft Chris Canty (a miniature cornerback the Patriots took No. 1 in 1997 who started only 12 games in four years before moving on to his lifes work).
